  1. Not a whole lot that I've ditched and never repurchased.

But my short list I believe includes the N64, always hated the controller for it & too few games I liked.

And a lot of handhelds. GameGear, GBA, Nomad. I just like a big screen; wound up with the GBA and the Nomad mostly playing them on a TV, and then what's the point? :) Replaced both with a Genesis / Snes.

Oh, and this doesn't really count, but the Flashback 1. Bought it NIB for $10 and overpaid. :) Gave it to Goodwill recently. NES on a chip nonsense, terrible controllers, stupid system.

  2. I would definitely try to fix your Xbox.

That said, I have both an Original Xbox and a 360, and I like that for some games the 360 upscales them to 720p; down the road it may be something to consider. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and Star Wars Battlefront II are ones I love to play on my 360 all beautified like.

On the other hand, stuff like Mech Assault (fun and dirt cheap) and Blood Wake (same) aren't playable on the 360 so the original is your only option there.

Good luck! That sounds like such awful luck that you had this system all this time and it turns out to be nonworking.

  3. My would be something like:

    1. Halo Wars

    2. Castle Crasher (XBLA)

    3. Plants Vs Zombies (XBLA)

    4. Mortal Kombat 9

    5. Bioshock

    6. Crackdown

    7. Torchlight (XBLA)

    8. Borderlands

    9. Rez (XBLA)

    10. Street Fighter 3 Third Strike (XBLA)

    11. Bioshock Infinite

    12. Defense Grid (XBLA)

With honorary mentions to Marvel Vs Capcom 3, Diablo III, Halo: Reach, Halo 3, Halo: ODST, Double Dragon Neon (XBLA), Run Away (Indie), Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown (XBLA), Hydro Thunder Hurricane (XBLA), Penny Arcade Rain Slick Precipice 1 and 2 (XBLA), Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved (XBLA), Risk: Factions (XBLA), Guardian Heroes (XBLA), Little Racers Street (Indie), Streets of Fury (Indie), and a katrillion others that I've loved. What a great system. :)

Most interesting how different each of the posted lists have been so far, not that many repeat offenders on the top of everyone's list (esp mine since I'm a weirdo).

  4. Really hoping you can get this all working...

And a part of me really really wants there to be a copy of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance on there (I'd heard it was originally a DC game before it went PS2 then Xbox and GC).

Or a sidescrolling Golden Axe port of TRODA, that's always been my dream. Course that could've been a Saturn game too maybe. :) I hadn't heard about this ToeJam and Earl 3 version, have to look into that! I liked the Xbox game but that sounds even sweeter being old school.

As for a 90's PC, around here we have Goodwill Reboot stores, they probably get in old stuff like a 90's PC.

  5. I know the N64 and Playstation outsold the other consoles by huge amounts, but I love the Saturn to this day. Dragon Force, Guardian Heroes, Virtua Cop & Virtua Cop 2 with the awesome Light Gun, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Nightwarriors, that awesome gamepad, Die Hard Arcade, no need for a memory card, Daytona, aaaand...that funky feature that lets you increase or decrease the pitch of vocals while playing a CD. Goofy fun.

Same for that screen saver of the spaceship. :)

Always hated the N64 controller, always thought the Playstation was without personality. And no, not in the "Volkswagens have personality because they break down all the time and you feel closer to them after having to fix them up a lot!" way, but in some other way. And that said, I loved Parappa, Einhander, Crash Bandicoot, and Tekken 3. :) But not as much as the Saturn games.

  6. People always seem to say Shadow Squadron was better, and I just found a loose copy ($2.50) and I finally got to experience it for the 1st time. I like the Feather 2 ship (who wouldn't? you can shoot incoming shots unlike with Feather 1). It's missing the "Star Wars" vibe that the SW soundtrack emotes, but yeah, it is a lot better gameplay. Still seems a little repetitive to me but I plan on playing some more. I love the early 3D flat-shaded polygon look so I'm glad I found another game.

I have to completely agree, and that's a big part of why I like Virtua Racing Deluxe. And why one of my favorite hidden gems is the Virtua Fighter Anniversary edition on VF4:EVO for PS2 (it has the flat polygon characters, but all with their VF4 moves :) ). I theorize that Metal Head wouldn't look nearly as craptastic if it was flat instead of textured as horrifically ugly as it is.

  7. I have only ever had 2 Xbox 360 controllers, my first one never had that problem but after many years the triggers started to fail.

So I bought a brand new Microsoft controller, have had it a few months, and it just started to ghost. It's really, really annoying. I'm glad I read this thread to know it's not an isolated problem... but otoh I don't want to spend $200 on the Horipad. :S

    Grrrrr.

  8. Hopefully this won't be the case for you, but in _my_ experience...

I've got a Trinitron 27" Flat CRT that I love. I got a modded composite video Vader 2600 (not sure which mod, bought it from a place that I don't think still does them), and no matter what I do or adjust, the screen flips with my Trinitron (constantly, it's unplayable). I'd spent hours fidgeting with settings and whatnot, and it just won't work. So I've got my modded Vader hooked up to a little GXTV now, and it looks and sounds wonderful on that. But still bugs me that it never successfully cohabited with my Trinitron. I've got a comp modded 7800 that works beautifully on the Trinitron, go figure.

  9. And now Goodwill won't take perfectly functional CRTs, I just discovered when trying to give a 19" Sanyo away today.

I definitely hate on the size and bulk; I've got a 27" Trinitron that I love; moving it up and down stairs is something that, even if I have 2 people, I would only want to do every five years or less. It's a nightmare.

And definitely with the power consumption. Related, the way the lights temporarily blink in a room when you turn a big CRT TV on, yikes.

All that said, I love Virtua Cop and Virtua Cop 2 on Saturn, and the Wii never got a Virtua Cop collection. So I gots to keep my CRT forever. :)

  10. If you like fighters, DC has them in spades. From the well known fun ones, Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter 3, Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Capcom Vs SNK...

To the less well known ones, like Plasma Sword, Power Stone, good stuff there.

Some other favorites of mine: Demolition Racer: No Exit, Toy Commander, Space Channel 5, Typing of the Dead (with Keyboard), Dynamite Cop, Ready 2 Rumble, Confidential Mission (with Lightgun). Have fun!

  11. I have to agree with GenesisGuy, SOR2 was huge. I've no stats on its sales, but it is not only a beloved classic but sold very well too, it's no niche favorite.

Personally, I loved SOR 3 as well (and even think I slightly prefer it to SOR 2, though this is a less popular opinion, I just love Dr. Zan's range and animations).

  12. As ever, a great vid!

I particularly second the motion on Sega Swirl and Red Dog - and agree that Red Dog in particular looks amazing with the VGA Adapter. It seriously looks like a game of a full decade or more past when it came out. It's made by Argonaut Software, the dudes who did Star Fox for the SNES, and is similar in ways.

Had never heard of the Ascii FT pad, have to check out those.

Also, MJ...big thumbs up on the Katamari Sagan shirt! :-> Sweet.

  13. I've a feeling my understanding of this is incorrect, but is there not some way Ebay can kind of force him to send the goods since he's not claiming he doesn't have them, etc?

They get so high and mighty about "your bid is a CONTRACT" and whatnot, I would think it works the other way around too. But I suppose not. I would seriously almost think you _could_ get legal on him with this, small claims or something. I mean, we're talking about several hundred dollars of screwjob here.

I'm super pissed at this bs seller, that's just a crock of shit.

  14. I used to dislike Golden Axe II, because they replaced the little puntable elves with those Wizard guys. But more and more I've come to recognize that Golden Axe II is a really, really fantastic game all things considered. Though technically that isn't what this thread is about... I will briefly mention that Golden Axe: The Return of Death Adder for the arcade is just wonderful and I love it to pieces. But back to Golden Axe...

Of my bazillion favorite games of all time for any system or arcade machine, etc, Golden Axe always finds its way in the top ten if not the top 5, no matter my mood. It's got a flavor, a character, and a simple level of joy that just remains fun no matter how many years down the road it gets to be after it initially came out. Plus, I just love the combo in which you use the butt of your axe / sword hilt to konk the baddies on the back of their heads after you make them keel over with a gut shot.

  15. I think it'll be a hot topic for ages because it was the last Sega console, and was completely awesome to boot. It's an easy thing for people to get others' emotions all worked up about. Myself included for brief moments. But no, it'll never ever happen.

I would love for the game world to change so radically that Sega and Nintendo would go head to head again, and have really fun games and true game consoles. I would absolutely kill for that to happen and for motion control to die (apart from for light-gun games), same for machines that are supposed to not only play games but let you skype with your pals in east India while making you toast, reprogramming your damned garage door, filing your taxes, live-streaming your latest bowel movement, selling you music that no one anywhere wants to hear and movies that are available for $1 via redbox for $9 via your console...while charging you $50 or more per year for ... well nothing; free games that are worth $0 that you would never, ever pay for on your own (or if you would they're only yours for a week or two then gone)... just so you can say you have a Gold Plus Ultra Buttcrack Supa Special membership.

I really, really hate modern gaming. And fantasize about a Dreamcast 2 steamrolling through the market and really creative games that aren't Call of Duty 8 and Madden 400 coming out every couple of weeks. But we're a niche segment. Those of us who bought Cannon Spike on release day. Those of us who thought Dynamite Cop was good fun. Those of us who still play Typing of the Dead and Power Stone regularly. We didn't have the numbers to make the DC a success, and we don't have the numbers to turn back the tide of these new idiotic camera dvr blu-ray oh and they play games too machines. So dream of Dreamcast 2, but don't ever hope for it.

  16. Not to alter the command, but the only ones that come to mind aren't the absolute _worst_ but the most disappointing.

And that honor goes to Lord of the Rings: Conquest for 360. I was so excited to have the (supposed) developer of Star Wars Battlefront II doing a LOTR version...

But it was garbage (apparently EA gutted the team as they tend to do before development got anywhere). I waited and waited, and paid full price on release day. And it was a buggy, poorly conceived, completely unfun pos.

Second mention would go to Comic Jumper for XBLA. The demo was one of the funniest, engaging demos I'd ever played. And the game was just a complete mess. I kept re-trying it because I couldn't believe that after playing the demo that the full game was such a crapbag.

  17. Excellent list, a lot of games I would put on my personal favorites.

Loved the section on Bleem! I am still angered that Sony sued Bleem! and basically kept losing, but had enough $ to keep appealing and opening new frivolous cases such that Bleem! had to shut down. They did release Bleem! for PC at one point, it let you run PSX game son PCs with fancy graphics cards so you could get anti-aliasing and whatnot. I've still got my Bleem! Tekken 3, and the difference between that on a Dreamcast and running it on PS2 is night and day! I guess Sony felt (?) that it made the PSX hardware look bad or something, though they failed repeatedly to successfully make their case in court.

Particularly loved the mentions in Parts 1 and 2 of these videos: Armada, Cannon Spike, Zombie Revenge, and most definitely Demolition Racer. I got more play out of DR than possibly any other game back in the day, just fun time and time again. Also really loved seeing the prototypes. I've seen Prop Arena at shows before, and have played the arcade version (completed with pedals in the full rig!).

    But again, excellent video!

And my edit...a few hidden gems I highly recommend that didn't get mentioned:

I have to say if you've not tried it, please try...Ooga Booga. It's so weird, and yet so fun if you can get into it. Remotely like a Super Smash Bros of sorts, but with Witch Doctors. And eventually you can open secret characters including...Abraham Lincoln. Who runs around the island shouting things about giving you four score and seven years' worth of a beatdown. Bizarre, fun, insane little game.

I also have a strange love for Plasma Sword: Nightmare of Bilstein. It's kind of a standard 3d fighter, but for my taste it's just really good and addictive. It's a sequel to Star Gladiator for PSX. Basically a way way way better and slightly weirder version of Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi. :)

And a really fun James Bond themed light gun shooter, Confidential Mission. The DC Light Guns aren't as great as the Saturn's, but it's still an excellent, fun, strange game (that really really should have seen a Wii release along with the Virtua Cop series, since they did HOTD with such success).

And though it might not be considered a hidden gem (?), you HAVE to play Typing of the Dead sometime. Just have to. And same for Power Stone (what really constitutes Hidden? :) )

Viva Dreamcast, my favorite console of all time. :)

  18. I've heard Garry Kitchen speak about doing DK for the 2600, I don't think he purposely was making it poorly. It is....kind of fun, if not nearly as good as the CV version.

I love a good conspiracy theory but I don't think it holds in this case.

  19. Back on the light-gun shooters... If you like House of the Dead, don't overlook Ghost Squad or Link's Crossbow Training. Or the Gunblade NY / LA Guns compilation.

Just wish they'd have done a Virtua Cop compilation, grr.

My other Wii games that I own and keep on playing: Mario Kart, Rayman Raving Rabbids, Geometry Wars: Galaxies, Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort. Love them all.

And am probably going to get the two Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles / light gun shooting games too.

  20. I fell mostly in love after playing the demo. I'd probably still prefer Torchlight and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, but this was fun and good, and obviously had a lot to offer.

So I traded in a buncha stuff at the local used game store and pre-ordered the first used copy to come in (since I don't want Activision to get my money directly if possible, it's a personal / political thing against companies that give millions of $ every year to right-wing causes).

I'll wait to give it full judgement, but off the bat I don't think it's notably better than Torchlight, which was $20 brand new for XBLA. But perhaps it's fuller, longer. Definitely has more character classes, so there's that. Eager to have some crazy dude trade his in when he gets bored or needs the cash.
