More GameCube Hidden Gems (Part 3)
Curious Sofa replied to Metal Jesus's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I hate nearly every single Nintendo made controller except for the GC one, and I am bonkers in love with it. I love the one big button, I love how the triggers fit my hands, I love the analog sensitivity. I find myself constantly trying to find more good GC games to use it with, and using it a lot on the Wii if a game is compatible with it. It's possibly in my top five of all time (and I have played with hundreds of controllers for various systems in my time). Right up there with the Sega Genesis 6-button controller. Just love it. -

Very curious also, completely stoked for the PRGE! -
Sega Genesis/Megadrive model 1,2,3. Your favorite?
Curious Sofa replied to OldSchoolRetroGamer's topic in Sega Genesis
And I will say that though it's not my favorite... For someone who doesn't want to get into the 32X and CD, the Model 3 is handy and likely perfect. Just play Virtua Racing Deluxe on a good emulator. -
I go back and forth on GameStop, don't hate too much. We've got a localish chain around here that's better in nearly every way, but I still am ok with what GS does most of the time. However, I semi recently made the grand mistake of buying the GS exclusive Battle Edition of Injustice: Gods Among Us for the 360, brand new for $150, $10 to ship, $160 total. And lo and behold, I never got into the game, was terrible at it & just didn't like it. The fight stick was excellent but I got sick of the art. I tried hocking it on Craigslist with no takers for as low as $75 recently. So I thought, unlikely, but I'll see what Gamestop gives in store credit for this thing. Answer: nothing. That's right, nothing. The manager didn't even look inside the box (so it isn't an issue of condition; honestly I'd only put a few hours into the game total anyways, it was in great shape). She tick-tacked around on her computer and politely said something about how they are taking in less and less gear, specifically Rock Band stuff, due to such a high defective rate. So no, they couldn't give anything in store credit for it. At all. They have the item new in the store still, for $130 currently. And I noted they've got new copies of Bioshock: Infinite for $60. Used for $55. Game is brand new free ship from Amazon for $40. I went to my preferred game shop, got $70 in store credit for it, got a used copy of Bioshock: Infinite for $35 and still have the rest of the credit to use. So...many a thumbs down for GS.

Sega Genesis/Megadrive model 1,2,3. Your favorite?
Curious Sofa replied to OldSchoolRetroGamer's topic in Sega Genesis
I have always loved and had the Model 2, and prefer it for style. I have two of them, both with non-functioning reset buttons (a common thing with Model 2?). I've read that Model 1 had notably better sound output than the Model 2 but am too lazy to find a source. I was never a huge fan of that style, but liked the look in its own way. I think that the Model 3 is cute, but yeah, too limited. Most specifically I didn't like that it can't play Virtua Racing or get a 32x hooked up to it. My favorite of all is the CDX, though. Which isn't really the question, just sayin'. -
I am by no means a great player, but I enjoy it. I also don't care about achievements, esp ones that are too hard to get. I just enjoy playing it through, seeing the great animations in high def, feeling the nostalgia. I still give it a big thumbs up. If for no other thing than for the Iron Horse stage. It completely rules.

That must be it. And it must apply to Amazon as well... (apologies if I'm sidetracking the entertaining discussion about the ebay auction for the overpriced PS1 that started the thread!) Games' worth about $10. So the Book Grove says "Satisfaction Guaranteed".... what could they do for you to make you "satisfied" for spending $2k on a $10 game??

This isn't nearly as crazy, but I am throwing this one out there too: http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&pub=5574883395&toolid=10001&campid=5336500554&customid=&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fitm%2F370867456094%3FssPageName%3DSTRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT%26_trksid%3Dp3984.m1438.l2649 Battalion Wars for GC, Buy It Now of $112.00. I feel like kind of an a-hole for doing it, but I couldn't resist sending the seller a "question" asking why it's nearly $100 over what the average brand new / sealed copy of the game with free shipping sells for. I added a "does it come with a special controller or something?". I just don't understand why some listings go up with such outrageous pricing. Esp without a Make Offer option. Not that it would've made this one all that much less insane...

I thought his jokes were funny, esp when he's ripping on the system. I didn't take it too seriously for the most part. That said, I thought he did himself a disservice by literally not even spending thirty seconds learning how you are supposed to play Pitfall! or any other games, just plugged them in and if it didn't do what he wanted he got frustrated. It's partially a testament to the level of intrigue and complexity that actually exists in some 2600 titles, but more it's just silly of him given that I'm sure he spends a fair bit of time learning the conventions of Xbox 360 games instead of just playing them, getting frustrated, and declaring them garbage with no intro period at all. I can only imagine that he would have melted into goo if someone had made him play (gasp!) Pressure Cooker, Starmaster, or Riddle of the Sphinx. And given his attention span, they shoulda had him play Demon Attack, Jawbreaker, Frogger, Seaquest, Empire Strikes Back, and Berzerk. He'd be in love.

"No Refunds." No shiznit.

It's a $6 download for WiiWare (for the regular Wii not the Wii U), not a physical release. It's entertaining if a bit rough on the production edges. The graphics are nice and it seems to be something I _could_ really get into if only I could figure out my trouble with those previously mentioned exploding tower killing bots.

What Genesis game are you playing right now?
Curious Sofa replied to MagitekAngel's topic in Sega Genesis
Back to some Golden Axe II for me. -
I know it's old, but I just finally got around go playing Robocalypse for the Wii and I very much enjoy it. Except I am sucking at it, horribly. I am usually pretty good with tower defense games, but this one is stymying me. The waves of those bots that turn into exploding eggs, I've just no idea what to do about them. They always show up after I've just spent tons of dough on upgrading a maze of towers, and they just wipe the mofos out. Any and all help appreciated!

SHOW THE SEGA SATURN LOVE, PEOPLE!
Curious Sofa replied to Tales from the Game Room's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I missed out on Burning Rangers. For me, the holy trilogy when stores were closing out of Saturn stuff (including Wal-Mart and Toys R Us selling brand new Saturns for $49.99!!! Why I didn't buy five I do not understand...) was House of the Dead, Shining Force III, and Panzer Dragoon Saga. All three games were clearanced at $20. I bought two of each, one for a buddy of mine and one for me. That is what you call not being able to forecast the game market right there, folks. As to Burning Rangers, I enjoyed your review very much, AA Bottoms! I don't think the game is for me though, and have never pulled the trigger on it. It's by Yuji Naka of Nights and Sonic Fame, it's got great graphics, interesting gameplay set up....but I just have never thought it would be my bag. If anyone wants to ship me a copy I promise to give it a thorough try though. It just seems a bit heavy on the maze element which I've never loved, and only having 4 levels is pretty weak. And all that said, it's a wonderful display of Saturn's graphics capabilities as well as Naka's ingenuity. -
SHOW THE SEGA SATURN LOVE, PEOPLE!
Curious Sofa replied to Tales from the Game Room's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I will keep my Saturn forever just for Virtua Cop and Virtua Cop 2. I always have thought the "Stunner" light gun for the Saturn was the best light gun ever, in terms of not only accuracy but the spring action. I also just love Die Hard Arcade to pieces. Suplexing and Pile-Driving the final boss is so gratifying. Not to mention taking it to your opponents with a grandfather clock. And of course, Nights, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Nightwarriors, Last Bronx, Marvel Super Heroes. And yes, playing as the car from Daytona in Fighter's Mega Mix. I know I'm a Sega nut tried and true for this, but I've far more Saturn games than I have for PS1 and PS2 combined (and don't even have a PS3). It's got charm. -

GameCube Hidden Gems - Part 2
Curious Sofa replied to Metal Jesus's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I do love your vids, Metal Jesus. Though my tastes run fairly differently, I love the enthusiasm and friendliness you have towards the whole hobby. Also, I'm jealous of your X-Arcade Mame cab. I am seeking out Capcom Vs SNK 2 EO after watching this, appreciate the effort you put in! Oh and a silly suggestion... for Pt 3 maybe. Pac-Man World Rally. It came out for $30 brand new, never got any hype at all, but yet is a respectable Mario Kart clone if there ever was one, IMO. Progressive scan, looks great...some interesting play mechanics, good track design...and the ability to play as the Prince from Katamari Damacy (and there's a Katamari track). Also, as one of the weapons, the Galaga double ships. This can be found for circa $10, I highly recommend it. It is one of the very few GC games I own. -
I had originally thought that Sonic Gems was the only way to get Sonic The Fighters, but yes, the XBLA version is all high deffed up and sweet. Well, sweet, for one of the simplest and silliest fighting games out there. Model 2 goodness. I believe it's only $5 too. I bought it straight up and love it.

Muncher (2600 Homebrew) Limited Edition sold out
Curious Sofa replied to Wickeycolumbus's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Adding a bump and a question...how are people faring on the default difficulty level? My attention span is suspect and I'm not claiming to be any good at the game by far. The best I've gotten is around 15k, to stage 7. Fun, fun, fun, game. Going to have to get me a box now. -
2013 Portland Retro Gaming Expo
Curious Sofa replied to Albert's topic in 2013 Portland Retro Gaming Expo
I am making plans to attend all the way from Iowa, just for fun and to get away for awhile. I went years ago to the show in Vegas mostly because AtariAge was there, and I was lucky enough to get to see the surprise unveiling of Halo 2600. Now I am REALLY hoping to make it, this ought to be a riot. -
Muncher (2600 Homebrew) Limited Edition sold out
Curious Sofa replied to Wickeycolumbus's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Got mine a few days ago, and finally got to sitting down to play it. I just absolutely love it, no hyperbole. Extremely challenging without being frustrating, fantastic control, interesting level design, wonderful game all around. After having watched the video I didn't know if it would have enough variation to keep my attention long term, but it most definitely, absolutely does. It's interesting how your mind lulls; after playing a time or two, I actually have more difficulty with the first couple of screens, sometimes dying with around 100pts! Ack. And again, fantastic game. Thanks so much!! -
Guys.... Guys... Seriously. Look at this. I want it so bad.
Curious Sofa replied to Tense's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
I don't even like the NES, never have...and yet I would consider paying $900 for that. It's awesome. Clearly, the 2600 needs its own set like this. -
Roll up roll up i present to you......The PRO-LINE ARCADE STICK
Curious Sofa replied to YANDMAN's topic in Atari 7800
Absolutely must have one. This is wonderful work. I especially like the "Button" labels. That and the fact that it is the same size as the entire 7800. The suction cups, everything. Must have. Sign me up please!
