  1. I gotta go with Daytona here, play them one after another. The 32X version looks cool compared to...well I don't know. On it's own.

But after you see the Saturn version, the 32X version looks craptacular. And that said, I own it and still play it sometimes. And never had any bugs of note in the Saturn version. :)

I had this training pack back in the day, watched the tape. Pretty laughably useless, but a funny little promo. I wore the shirt completely out in fact.

    What size is the t-shirt?

  2. Just stumbled into this game, just incredible. Partially just seeing the evolution after playing the original bin followed by the current, just fantastic work SW!!! I can't wait for this to come out on cart. Just makes me love the whole Atari scene, to see things like this and Frantic. Amazing.

  3. I am very honestly not excited nor interested in the Wii U, the PS4, or the Xbox One. And I'm not so retro that you would expect that from me, I really enjoy my 360 and my Wii (never quite bit on the PS3 as of yet). The reason I mention this is that for my (non-participatory part for the forseeable future) part, the Xbox One isn't necessarily worse than the other garbage consoles being offered; the Kinect Big Brother things is outright funny but not that big of a deal to me (get yourself a blu-ray player or up-converting DVD player and don't worry about this nonsense).

My issue is that for all of these consoles, XbOne included, there are eventually going to be games that I sorely want to play. Even though the systems themselves are garbage, are terrible ideas that nobody for any real reason wants... they're not really improvements over the Wii, the PS3, the 360. At all, for me. And yet if we want to play whatever comes down the pike, we will have to get one of these unnecessary systems that no customer anywhere ever was asking for.

Okay, and to keep to the XbOne... this is easily the ugliest, laziest, stupidest looking "console" (if it can be called that) I have ever seen, above and beyond the lack of aesthetic design of even the worst looking game consoles of the past. Well, okay, the original NES I still think looks awful as do its controllers. But this one is just stupefyingly ugly. And also, as has been discussed, calling it the XbOne is insulting, confusing, and horrible. So now we have to say "Original Xbox", "360", and "XboxOne". I hate it passionately.

Screw alla this. Maybe have to get myself a Ouya or something. :)

  4. Awesome list and video! I thought I kind of knew most of the great Wii games, but you sold me on a couple I wasn't all that familiar with. I like how detailed you were with why Red Steel 2 is worth a look.

I also liked what I saw in your stack for the next episodes, particularly Geometry Wars: Galaxies. It is my favorite Geometry Wars game when played with the Classic Controller twinstick style.

My favorite Wii Game is actually the Gunblade NY / L.A. Machine Guns combo game. I loved those games dearly in the arcades, and the Wii gets a great version. As you loved Ghost Squad, you may like this one too. Though the humor isn't there and the gameplay different, it's another great lightgun shooter from Sega. My other favorite that is unlikely a "hidden" gem would be Rayman Raving Rabbids, for the fun plunger-shooting action and humor. :)

  5. Whole damned thing is killing me. I kind of want the Blackest Night DLC, Very much want the Red Son DLC (didn't know about the preorder exclusive thing or I would have GameStop pre-ordered), kind of like the Steelbook that comes with the Euro versions of the game, and _kind of_ want the joystick that comes with the Gamestop Battle edition.

$150 plus shipping and tax for the stick version from Gamestop (with no DLC), $95 for the Euro Red Son steelbook edition off Ebay, could pay extra for the Blackest Night DLC off ebay scamming resellers....and/or could be patient and wait to get a used copy of the game on the cheap, and hope they release Red Son and Blackest Knight as pay to download sometime soon after. Grr. Probably shoulda just kept my pre-order for $10 credit back from Amazon. Course I still wouldn't have it by now and would be peeved. :P

How is the Red Son pack, costumes, missions? Any good?

  6. I would just like to say that Amazon sucks wind for pre-ordering games. They hadn't shipped mine out yet, so I canceled the damned thing tonight. I'll just lose my $10 credit and get it faster either via ebay or I'll just go to a local store. Ridiculous.

Thinking about getting a UK version with a "Red Son Steelbook", just because it's cool. Unfortunately, resellers are asking $100 for those. Grr. Also, the UK Collector's edition statue is more to my liking than the US one (which features Batman being strangled by Wonder Woman's lasso and about to get a severe beatdown by her; the UK one has them facing each other and both on about equal ground), but I'm not shelling out $170 for a statue and some cards and skins.

So...hoping to be able to play this mofo soon.

And to reiterate...I am more than displeased with how much Amazon sucks with regard to pre-orders. They hosed me the one other time I pre-ordered a game, it showed up a good 10 days after release day. And somehow I thought this time would be better. Duh. :P

  7. Unsure if this is the right place to post this but thinking so...

Just farting around on Ebay came across these stupefyingly overpriced auctions, Genesis TMNT: Hyperstone for $1300 and Ghouls n Ghosts for $900:

eBay Auction -- Item Number: 2212106265531?ff3=2&pub=5574883395&toolid=10001&campid=5336500554&customid=&item=221210626553&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]

eBay Auction -- Item Number: 3211026746221?ff3=2&pub=5574883395&toolid=10001&campid=5336500554&customid=&item=321102674622&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]

There should be some kind of unwritten law that forbids such price jacking, and causes the perpetrators to be forced into hours of unpleasantry of various sorts for each of their trespasses. I am remotely, but only remotely tempted to send a "Question" asking if the TMNT auction includes $1250 in cold, hard, cash.

  8. I would also just like to say that whether they failed in the market (and what numbers you're using to determine this), the Sega Genesis / CD / 32x had _the single greatest video game controller of all time_ in the 6-button pad, and the 2nd generation pad was in the running too (despite being flimsier in general construct).

It is for this reason that I will nearly always pick a Genesis / CD / 32X multiplatform game over the SNES version.

This is going off from the main point too, but I'm just going to say that while the Saturn failed, I always thought it shouldn't have. It was made to do really awesome 2d games with some 3d capability, and the Playstation was the opposite. And at the time it seemed like Sony sure had the right idea and Sega the wrong. But now...when you try to play a 32-bit 3d game it's...so horribly ugly. Unless we're talking about Tekken 3, which was of course a very late 32-bit release. 2d gaming should have stayed stronger than it did.

So the Playstation was great for a lot of reasons, but the Saturn was too, it just wasn't in tune with the zeitgeist of polygon gaming. It reaally wasn't until the Dreamcast / Ps2 / Xbox / Gamecube that 3d was ready, if you ask me.

  9. Glad to hear I'm not the only one stoked for this! I also hope it's not as easy as the demo; I actually don't have a Gold / Live account so I just play versus CPU. My skillz, in terms of how people online compete, are close to non-existent. :)

Also interesting to hear it is a different fighting engine; I only tinkered a bit with the demo and it felt similar to MK9.

That ToysRUs deal sounds like the best I've heard. I got it from Amazon for $60 but with a $10 Amazon credit, not as good a deal but not bad.

  10. So, I may be in the dark, but I knew nothing about this thing. And now it has become just the 3rd game I am willing to part with full price for, in the 360's library. And I don't even think it will be perfect or a masterpiece, but it doesn't have to be. I loved Mortal Kombat 9 so much, they can pretty much just reskin it and sell me this as a DC Comics fighter. I'm good with that, and hoping for better.

And Batman's super move (or whatever they are calling the "Double Triggers when your gauge is fully charged" move in this game) is wickedly funny, over-the-top hilarious almost like a Roger Moore James Bond intro scene.

And pretty please, Netherrealm, don't blow it on this and rip me off. Do even half as good as you did with the latest MK and I'll be more than satisfied.

Anyone else have any thoughts after trying the demo or watching video? Am I completely insane to be in love with this?

I feel like it's the HD modern remastering of Justice League Task Force for the SNES I've been waiting a couple of decades for. :)

  11. I love the Saturn....but the Saturn version of this game _sucked_. I remember it taking so much time to load, and so frequently, it actually seemed like you spent more time waiting for loading between scenes than you did playing. I was soooo disappointed. Especially after how completely awesome X-men Vs Street Fighter was with the ramcart.

So this new release...looking damned fine. I'm in. Sold. Go Capcom. The Darkstalkers collection was fantastic, this will be another treat. And yes, seconding the motion above for a Power Stone collection. Or a Power Stone 3 if I may be so greedy.

And to brush up on my D&D skills, I'll have some goes at King of Dragons on the original Xbox Capcom Generations 2 disc. :)

  12. It definitely wasn't a hardware problem. The Dreamcast had issues, mostly in terms of Sega having lost its customer base, and in terms of not getting the EA Sports games and the Square Role Playing games it needed to woo the customers. And the VMU sucked. Oh, and the advertising was beyond idiotic except for the early "It's Thinking" ads which kind of ruled. But bullshit like that Jet Grind Radio ad, just almost trying to not sell games.

But the DC's graphics and chipsets, completely awesome. And for those of us who valued fighters and arcade style action games above all else, it was / is the best of all time. Partially because the graphics are so great. :)

  13. I wasn't actually huge on the early, true LucasArts games, but I still find this incredibly sad news. How hard would it have been for Disney to restructure, rather than completely destroy? Maybe very hard, I don't know.

I desperately want a _great_ Battlefront 3. I've seen the leaked video of how cool it was coming along...but I want it to be polished like Battlefront II was. Not garbage like the developer's next project along those lines, Pandemic studio's Lord of the Rings battle craptastic game. And Pandemic kind of got gutted / rearranged by EA, so who knows if a great Battlefront is even a possibility any more.

I'm still sad about Midway getting closed down. Even though I think that WB is doing a very nice job with the licenses they have (really loved the latest MK and Hydro Thunder), it's still heartwrenching.

  14. And don't forget a 7800 Moon Patrol.

But this is getting off the point that Desert Falcon, in concept, seems an easy -> Zaxxon hack. Easy and worthwhile. And conceivably completely awesome. :)

Follow this up with a perfect port of Congo Bongo (you know, since it's isometric too and ran on the same arcade board as Zaxxon).

  15. Am thoroughly enjoying it so far, haven't been around to play much though. Initial impression is that the music alone really got me into the Saturn feel.

But of course....badly miss the six-button Street Fighter style controller. Thinking hard about getting one for my 360 for this and for SF3: 3rd strike.

  16. Shadow Squadron and Virtua Racing Deluxe are probably the only two absolute Must Haves I can think of for 32X, but they are _really_ startlingly good (considering honestly how bad most of the rest of the library is).

Spiderman: Web Of Fire is okay but it's like $200 on Ebay now, not that good. Blackthorne is very good, but is pricey to get.

I would recommend Virtua Fighter, but kinda only so you can play it, get used to it, then play the Saturn version and be all "ooooooh, it's sooo awesome!". And then play VF5 and cry for your old systems being so bad at 3d.

And then play the PS2 VF4 EVO special mode with the VF Anniversary game, which features new characters and moves and animates them in VF1 style. And then be happy with that, the best VF ever.

    I digress.

Zaxxon's Motherbase 3000 is pretty good, really. It's a lot like Viewpoint for the Neo Geo, and has some interesting conventions. And like Zaxxon of old, it's _hard_. Watch video of it, maybe try it on an emulator, I find it well worth owning.

  17. Doing some downloadable fun with a points card I got - really enjoying Iron Brigade for tower defense fun. Very funny, and very professionally put together for a $10 game.

Finally got around to buying Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown. My favorite of the VF series will probably remain VF3, but this one isn't bad. I really like the addition of Jean, he kicks a lot of patoot.

Spent the 400 points on Sonic: The Fighters and Virtua Fighter 2. Both are good and worth the points, but I will say the camera problems in Sonic when you fight Mecha Sonic are really frustrating. Also doesn't help that I'm a scrub and can't seem to beat the mofo. :P

Still thinking about Ugly Americans though the reviews are poor, I do enjoy the demo a lot. Also considering Nights, even though I have it on Saturn. Not sure if I'll get the full version or save my remaining points for some Pinball FX tables and the forthcoming Darkstalkers XBLA release.

  18. I have never been any good at Tempest, but have always appreciated the game for its sound, its character and how interesting it is. I finally got around to playing my 5200 copy today, and I'm still terrible at it...

But am slowly, ever so slowly getting better. I normally get to around level 6 on a decent run, so yes, I need much improvement.

I have to agree with most of the reviews I'm seeing, the game is amazingly well put together. The manual is gorgeous and well thought-out, the graphics and sound are fantastic, and I love that they threw in a demo mode.

Very professional all around, what a gem!
