  1. I wouldn't worry just yet; particularly with the "holiday" on Monday, and the way the post office has been lately, I'm thinking you will get it late next week depending on where it's coming from and going to. I've had stuff arrive at my doorstep while still not showing going anywhere via tracking. So I wouldn't be worried just yet, personally.

  2. Ack, Ransom hit me right between the eyes. I have a second 5200 "just in case", grrr. I hate being pegged!

I also wanted to mention that wood_jl's scenario is exaggerated highly; I don't see why on earth you would need to get two of the Best electronics controllers; if you get one, you can use another that say doesn't have a working start button, etc. I play Space Dungeon precisely that way. My total cost for one controller with shipping from Best was $45 if I remember right, a couple of years ago. $45 < $100. :) By far. Just don't go scaring people too quickly.

And also, I can't really say why precisely, but I (and likely a lot of others) am a console guy. I had a Vic 20 and a C64 back in the day, but I have NO interest in an 800, just none. Thus, 5200. Lots of stuff out for the 5200 that never came out for 2600 or 7800, or came out in better form for 5200.

I'm not saying everyone has to love it, I'm just saying that we who love it aren't completely out of our minds (necessarily). It's not like being a Cubs fan, or something, or being one of those people that loves something because its many flaws somehow endear it to the owner (IMO Volkswagen owners like my Dad, but that's off topic!). The 5200 isn't everyone's cup of tea, but a reasonable argument can and has been made that it rocks. I don't know which of my Atari consoles I'd keep if I could only keep one, but the 5200 would definitely be a strong contender versus the 2600 and 7800. That says a lot, IMHO.

  3. 1. Best version of Moon Patrol of the consoles (only other one is the 2600, and the 5200 version whips its buttocks)

    2. Dual controller Space Dungeon

    3. Generally much better sound than either the 2600 or 7800 (see above, Moon Patrol soundtrack for example)

    4. My favorite version of Pac-Man for any system. I can't even fully explain it, I just really love 5200 Pac-Man, even above the arcade one.

    5. My favorite version of Space Invaders for any system. Love the different creatures, the sound effects, the animations on the invaders.

    6. I love the Dreadnaught Factor, and don't have interest in an Intellivision (the only other console it came out for I believe). The video game critic hated it, but that guy is often completely insane.

    7. Controller problems? Get a Best Electronics lifetime gold refurbished controller for $40ish. Problems solved.

    8. Hate the controllers? Okay, I'm sort of down with this, particularly the buttons for button mash games. Solutions are out there though; Wico, competition pro, or in these forums there are dudes who mod PC controllers for the 5200. I've got one and love it.

  4. I am surprised, but I played the demo a few times and was sorely underwhelmed. Even though the game looks right, sort of. I really hate the attempt at side art, or whatever you call the two diagonal lines they draw next to the screen. And yes, you can remove them, but then it's just blank next to the screen, very bare looking. No side art people?

And obviously, the game is a simple button masher. But somehow it felt more lame than playing XMen, and more tedious, despite how much I loved the game back in the day. I still enjoy a round of Simpsons on Mame, but that might be due to using an XArcade stick and buttons, not sure.

But for whatever reason, I'm giving this port a thumbs down, and am surprised to report that after wanting it for so long, I'm not buying it.

And with that I hereby deposit $0.02

  5. Yeah, I agree with the posts saying that if you're making over $20k at this it's clearly a real business and you've got to have your docs in order...

But PayPal needs to be deducting _their_ fees. As well as Ebay's listing fees (since they're the same company now). It's lazy, harmful and inaccurate of them to throw out the gross sales number by itself when the other numbers are at their fingertips. At the very least, they need to give you a quick total along with that 1099 form.

  6. Piracy? You're serious. You think that's an issue.

    Microsoft does.

If you don't have a modified console, or enough to know what really goes on behind the scenes of the dashboard updates, then it's easy to think that it's no big deal. Microsoft thinks that it's big enough of an issue that they recently updated every DVD drive on every 360 in the last year and a half to support newer "XGD3" discs, which basically allow the discs to be burned slightly beyond normal capacity. Only the original Samsung drives did not get updated, as they cannot see the outer rim of an XGD3 disc. All this just to put a stop to people with custom firmware.

Since you made the comment, and I'm not trying to be a jerk when I say this, but, you obviously have no idea what you're talking about. It really is a much bigger issue than you realize.

Eight hundred and ninety thousand people pirated Gears of War 3, and that's just from one torrent site. Take into consideration other torrent sites, download sites like the recently shutdown Megaupload, and usenet, and you easily have over a million people with modified consoles.

    So yeah, I'm serious.

I will at this point completely concede. I did have no idea the numbers involved, my statement and argument were based on my own logic alone. I'm shocked that so many pirated Gears 3 (and have the machines to play it on, with whatever is necessary). I hath been schooled.

  7. Piracy? You're serious. You think that's an issue.

The sixteen guys who have flashed 360s, who would never ever pay full price for a game even if they couldn't pirate them?

They're a factor in the greater Xbox economy as a whole?

And yes I exaggerate, but serious. The sixteen hundred guys? Or even five thousand guys with pirate-y rigs and shit, who as I say wouldn't pay full price for new games anyways? What do they matter?

If this stuff goes through, in all seriousness, I'll be done for good with new consoles. I'm already on the border; I feel like booting up my game system only to have it basically ask me for my credit card number ("Get Gold Now!") so it can charge me an auto-renewing yearly fee is beyond upsetting.

And of course, the real factor, they just can't seem to make good enough games anymore. I don't want another first person shooter. I don't care about motion controls. I am, in a word, old. And thus, I'll probably wind up going full old school.

  8. I'm confused, the link you posted is to a currently listed item that has a pic and is clearly in better shape, maybe the link was the wrong one?

But in any case, I would say looking at what you got, I'd insist on a refund and sending it back. That's just an awful looking label, cheap or not (what did you pay?), I wouldn't have that in my collection. Was the auction "as is" or was there a return allowance? If it wasn't an "as is" auction, you may be able to force him to give you a refund through ebay / paypal. They're very buyer happy as a rule, unless it was listed as an "as is" auction, in which case you may be screwed.

    Edit:

Found what I think is the one you're talking about, $30 with stock photo and "game is in "good" condition, some fading and discoloration". Says he gives refunds within 7 days, I'd make him do so. It's obvious why he didn't post a photo of this one.
