Playing this on the EMU7800 emulator on my PC. It is indeed awesome! I've always liked Galaxian a bit better than Galaga, so I'm very glad to be able to play this 7800 version at home.

I agree and feel similarly.  You & I are likely part of a small group who prefer Galaxian (I get the awesomeness that is the dual ship thing in Galaga, I really do...).  Not sure if it's just nostalgia, the little needle like bullets, the sounds, or what it is.  But Galaga always seemed a bit more...squishy? Cartoony?  IDK.  Galaxian kind of had its own vibe that I still prefer to this day.

XBOX 360 didn't work for me...only the XBOX one controller works.

My understanding is that it will work with anything that uses "X-input", and I thought that included Xbox 360?  In any case, I can vouch for the Xbox One as well as the 8bit Do Arcade stick working flawlessly with the GSP so long as it's wired connection.  I don't believe any wireless controllers work with it except the stock ones.

I'm thinking of grabbing one, even though I have a VCS and Flashback 12.

I still adore mine and find it worth the $80 that I paid.  Even though I have an FB...10?  And a Retron77.  And a modded Vader with Harmony.  It does a lot of neat stuff, and is an easy way to play 2600 5200 7800, in HDMI.  Tiny footprint too.

Yeah for the general consumer a car cd player doesn't make sense today when popping in a cheap (and tiny) thumb drive full of MP3s into one of the USB ports is the norm.

But yeah even though I have a non-modded Saturn I almost never use it.  Why bother popping in discs when the one with the MODE has every single game on it, with zero hassle. Just turn it on and there it is.  There is no difference on screen and when playing, which is where it counts 😛

In many ways it's the perfect best of both worlds between emulation and original hardware.  Imagine if someone gave me this as a kid forking over his three part time jobs' paychecks on Saturn Games.  :)

I believe that's the main (only?) thing that is gonna really fail. It sucks that there isn't much interest in keeping discs spinning. by now we could have better laser reader replacements than what Sega and Sony gave us back in the day but instead they want us to pirate all the games and run them off an SD card. screw that! you hear me???? take those SD readers and throw em out the window!

    No.

    :P

Seriously though, with disc rot, and laser drives getting less popular, the SD thing (got a GD Emu in one of my Dreamcasts) helps preserve the games.  Give them at least that much credit.

Especially with the ridiculous and outright unfair Saturn prices nowadays, they're letting people get ahold of a Saturn & games that never would've or could've before.

Doesn't have to be for you but...at least give it a tip o' the hat to the good it does for some.

just thought I'd let you all, my adoring fans, know that I acquired a 3rd Sega Saturn. this one is Japanese and grey. purchased alongside other naughty bits. I am hoarding these things in hope that if I come across any broken ones I can reference them with my good ones. I also wanna keep these out of the hands of you bastards who want to ODE-ize everything. Shame on you!!! shame! shame!!?

I've got three myself :)  Japanese White with Satiator, a custom painted blue / blue grey one that is modded to play backups, and a nearly brand new US Model 2 with box, instructions, etc.  Not going to ODE any of them. Unless a disc drive fails..... :P

  7. You know, I'm an overthinker.  I dwell on the past pointlessly; did this relationship go wrong because I undervalued that woman, should I have not said that one thing when trying to lease a space to open an arcade right out of college, why TF would I have ever sold my Gibson SG and Marshall Tube amp just because I was short on $ and space...

And this 382 page and counting thread just brings me a level of perspective, self-value, and yes, schadenfreude.  My mistakes are ones I can certainly learn from.  But at least I'm not making them on an hourly basis, in full public view from a jeering internet, and then having to sell my garish Spiderman house or think about an editor for my next BS email blast promising things that I know aren't true.  How do these people even find their way home after a trip to the grocery store??

Back to playing Shark! Shark! on my Evercade I go...

Kudos to Playdate.  I might just have to pick one up.  I also saw where they are up to 70k units sold.  Granted, it is a niche item, but the device has seemingly exceeded their expectations.  Makes on wonder if they will do a follow up device.

I don't like handhelds as a rule, much less black & white BUT...this little ditty has me tempted sometimes.  Just to support them.

Also, looks like they are up to about 70k more units than Trasharico has built, much less sold.... :)

A small number of Dreamcast games don't work in VGA and as far as I know they can't be forced to do so. As far as I know, you'd have to use S-video to get the best video quality from those games, as that is the highest-quality analog video thingy that works with everything. Not even sure what DCDigital does with those games.

Indeed - I would also be interested to know if DCDigital can play Plasma Sword.  In the meantime, as the only game I care about that I can't run in my GD Emu VGA DC, I'm happy enough to play it in ReDream.  And yes, I can has my original copy too.  I don't have any TVs that have S-video unfortunately, best picture on my composite "regular" disc drive DC is on my GX TV.  Looks nice but...13".  Mwah Mwaaaaa.

The Pandemic board game can be bought for less than $30 on Amazon...

    oboDKqn.png

The idea that having some version of that on an Android box console that costs $300 would be some "really ENORMOUS" deal is hilarious.

My family and I played this over Christmas break in 2019, the board game.

    We failed.

    :(

(I honestly still feel at least a twinge of guilt over this)  (ridiculousness or not, your emotions are not necessarily good at the "cause and effect" logic system)

If you installed it with the original disc, then it still requires the disc in his drive in order to play it. Also, technically I think it downloads it straight from Microsoft and is not actually ripped from the disc itself.

To play it without the disc, he can buy it from the Xbox store for $10 or so.

Yes, I personally find it worth the $10 to just have the downloaded game for PD:O, Star Wars Battlefront II, SW: KOTOR, etc even though I have the original games.  Easier to select, less wear on the disc drive and discs, etc.

    New At Games mystery object!

    image.png.684b98f7b2e2e7a7c197885752d13179.png

as seen on GenXGrownUp's Youtube channel

    "What is it?" Jon asks.

Looks like a new game controller for the GSP!

Seems to have, as Jon mentions, a joystick, mini trackball, four action buttons, number pad, spinner + three menu buttons which are probably game select, game reset and menu.

I guess this is a controller that you set down on the table in front of you.  It's for player 1.  If you want player 2 to join, you need to buy another one.  Given that the GSP has emulators for many retro consoles + MAME arcade games, looks like the good people at At Games decided to squash, once and for all, the controller issue by developing a Swiss Army knife does-everything controller that can, I'm just guessing, be used to play almost any game you can find to put on your SD card.  I'm personally very excited to hear this news and looking forward to seeing some video and hearing reports from people who get their hands on one of these and can try it out on real GSP hardware.

What do you guys think about the mystery object?

Just adding from further into the video a bit more of the left side:

  13. Just going to throw out there that I have been running my games through VGA on a TV that has the input and LOVING the picture.
Also, a thing that makes me exceedingly happy, is somehow my Hydro Thunder via GD EMU is "fixed" and plays perfectly this way (even though there are tons of reports out there that this particular game will not run any way any how you try it via VGA).  I just loaded it via the GD EMU program with "VGA Fix" enabled.

Only question that I probably know the answer to is...this isn't the case for Plasma Sword, one of my actual honest favorite DC games (guilty pleasure, I have no defense).  Can't get it to run even using the method that worked for HydroThunder above.  If anyone has a solution, I am very interested.  Thanks in advance!

They definitely had PLENTY of money to manufacture a run of 10K units (say, $2M) but tommy and friends just pissed it away on a non-stop office party and schmoozing around.

My head just spins in both disgust and mild amusement at the thought.  How many dozens of people (or hundreds?) were being paid how much in what parts of the world to sit around offices for years, doing nothing because there was no product and they never truly marketed?  There should be a sitcom made about this whole situation, with Poor Tom played by Steve Carrell or something.  This would be worth a season or two of laughs.  Much less if you somehow sideline it into Billy Mitchell / Chameleon / Ouya / N-Gage extras just for funsies.  Oh and the low level "failure" story redemption arc should have something to do with Trip Hawkins / Naughty Dog making Way of the Warrior, filming the fighting moves in their sweatsuits and cheap kids costume pieces...but then going on to be the Naughty Dog we know today with Crash Bandicoot & Last of Us.

  15. Instead of starting a new topic on a somewhat similar subject, I'm piggy backing here...

Value check on a Mystique Entertainment Division Registration card?  IDK how I have one, as I've never owned a Mystique title to my knowledge, but I have a mediocre condition "Factory Service Center" Warranty card.
If it's worth "real" money maybe I'll sell it (on the cheap here in the forums relative to value).  If it's not, I'd be happy to mail it to a collector (free of charge) in of one to make one of their games CIB etc.

Merry Christmas to all who play the Sega Saturn and regular visitors to the Office Sega Saturn Thread! Remember to play seriously, until your fingers break!

I quite literally have done so - I have OFFICIALLY been diagnosed by my PCP with "Gamer's Thumb", am on strong anti-inflammatory drugz, and am wearing a Thumb Spica.  Amusingly, in the comments in the fine print at the bottom of the Rx for the Spica, it says:

    Prognosis:  Poor

    Length of Time: 99 years

:o   LOL  She's not wrong though.  Can't really stop me from gaming, damn it.  Especially now that I have a Satiator. :)

Fast forward 9 years and it's $120+ for ASTAL.

I'm beginning to think these games are an investment at this point. It's like, if it costs that much now, imagine in ten years? Heck, we might even start seeing crap like "Madden '98" for $500.

I admire collectors, and sure wish I had a huge collection as I once did.  But do I regret selling most of it for thousands, and getting a Satiator?  I do NOT.  Note one tiny little bit.

  18. Here we are...making updates to posts from 8 years ago!  Yes, we still love the Saturn!!  :)
I love the new ports of Nights and Guardian Heroes (Xbox 360 to present, I believe they're on PS too)... but definitely need the old school Saturn for Die Hard Arcade, Dragon Force, Virtua Cop (CRT!), and no better platform for NightWarriors / SF Alpha 2/3.

I use the same controller sometimes but I have to use the GSP controller in port 2 to navigate the menues while the arcade stick is plugged into port 1.  Does it work the that way for you too?

I have not yet had to use Port 2, but I do use the GSP controller wirelessly to navigate the menus.  So I have to have it sitting nearby to go back to the menu, to select a game, etc.  But from there, the Arcade stick works great.  B button is mapped to the main fire button (2600 / 7800), and the X button is the 2nd 7800 button.

  20. Just want to report (in case it hasn't been already, IDK, trying to keep up but  31 pages is a LOT lol!)...

The 8bitdo Arcade Stick for Switch / PC DOES work, and fantastically, for 2600 and 7800 games, you just need the USB - C adapter which is like $5 online.

It's...amazing honestly.  Set the dial to X-input and you're good to go.

Having an absolute blast playing Subterranea, Commando, PMP's Galaxian...all looking amazing in HD on an OLED.  Just LOVE it.  :)
