Wow this got off topic and little childish fast. So back to the original post entirely. Did those games push the hardware to the limit? Not all of them, hell not many of them. Should that matter? No. Good games are good games no matter what they do with the hardware. As a community of collectors we should understand this better then anyone. If we were concerned with hardware specs and amazing proformance we would all be on the modern gaming forum all the time. There is alot to be said for what matters at the time. I personally view most video games, and classic games even more so, as art. To those that are interested in it the work speaks for itself in its own time and in some cases language. The history of video games matters because we are rapidly becoming a people defined by the things we do to entertain ourselves. Even if we look past the idea of being defined by our free time activities we are clearly moving forward based on technology, something video games are often pushing forward and creating new ways to do better things. The price for such a machine more then likely had more to do with the money it would bring in. We view these machines as fun and interesting pieces of our past. Arcade owners of the time viewed them as investments. Good investments can require a heavy price, but the smart business man knows where to put his money to make much more. In the 90s that was 2D fighters. As proof that they were right on the money, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are still on the top of the list for people. Not always the new stuff, but the old stuff for sure. Those games seemed simple from a tech standpoint, but were deep in game play. Not many, if any, modern games compare in terms of possibilty and complexity. Also, speaking to how "over powered" the hardware might have been for a 2D fighter: the beatiful part of the arcade machine design is the ability to do many things with the same hardware. I'm not huge into arcade machines, so I can't be completely sure, but I'm sure the hardware that didn't have to work too hard to make a 2D fighter work has a game on it somewhere that pushed it to limits the designers never thought it would. This happens all the time in home system. Launch titles never really push the hardware, but the titles toward the end of the life cycle always impress. Just my 2 cents.

I already have a machine for this, a MAME machine to be exact. The thought process is basically the same, and I went with XP. It is just the easies way to go. I started with Windows 7, but that just didn't work right, so I went back. Start with XP and save yourself the extra time I spent.

There are many people that would say the same things about art that is thought to be priceless by the rest of the world. There are people that spend millions and millions on sports cars that serve the same basic function my 1997 Toyota does. There are actually people in the world that pay for used and unwashed underwear. Money doesn't matter anyway. The way you use it matters. Some people have enough money to spend on stuff others would think is stupid. Sure, they could help others with the money and instead of filling their life with extra stuff they could dramatically imporve the lives of countless families. At the end of the day no one is dragging Jay Leno through the mud for owning more cars then any man could ever need. It might seem dumb to some to buy at $41,000 video game, but its also rude to come to a community of collectors and enjoy these things and say soemthing is wrong with them for enjoying it. I'm just saying.

I see you got the JFJ Easy Pro I was talking about on this forum a few weeks ago too. Good times, I recommend everyone gets one. Great to have with all the CD media out there now.

I would know but I wont link . Most people are just getting to the point were emulating classic games isn't a bad thing in their mind. Burning the game and playing it on the actual system seems to some how cross the line. What I will say is the information is really easy to find with Google, and the process is scray easy. I have burned a few to replace damaged disc in the past year because I wanted to play them, but I have since ordered new copies and/or repaired the old copies. I still find a lot of enjoyment having the real deal.. The good news is Sega CD games aren't hard to find online, and they are normally cheap. The disc are easy to repair, and the subject matter is vast. The hard part anymore is actually finding a working Sega CD. I forgot this place was 100% cool with flash carts, and this is pretty much the same thing. I actually do watch CGRHD alot, and I have been for 6 months or so. Its one of a few things I bothered to subscribe to. He seems to cover things well and with a since of humor I enjoy about these things. I really like that the Sega CD isn't lost to him. So far what I have seen for the Saturn on there is alot of import stuff. I have been watching that with interest though to see something I might really have to have.

I have Daytona USA and Virtaul Fighter 2. Those were some of the titles I was forgetting. All this talk about the systems cost to collect and all aside, I do love the way those big CD boxes look on the shelf. The Sega CD had the same kind and I just always thought they looked cool. Most of my Sega CD boxes and 2 of my Saturn boxes were replaced with DVD cases with the cover project print outs but I still have a few around and they look great. Seeing those pics of all of them on the shelf made me want more of them just to look at.

Is it sad that the part of this I envy most is the extention for the Sega CD model 2 that let the Sega Genesis model 1 fit it without the Genesis hanging off the end? I really need to find one of those randomly setting around or something. I remember dad throwing it out, and I remember thinking that had to be a bad idea, but I was young and excited. I did randomly find the spacer for the 32x to fit the model 2 Genesis recently, so maybe there is hope. GREAT job for 6 months. Just be careful, trust me you can over spend in a heart beat on this stuff. I know I have in the past, and this month. I'm over $300 this month already. BE CAREFUL!

I'm always scared that I'm going to buy just that. If I buy a sealed game I'm buying it to be sure I get something I know I can play. I have to open it to be sure I got something out of it.

I'm not the kind to pay big bucks for a game anyway. If I really love the game I might be willing to pay its original price, but I'm surely not going to pay $10k for anything NES related anytime soon. I'm glad there are people out there that will, but I can't see why. As far as the R10 conversation is concerned you are saying there have been 5 sold in the last year. Thats still pretty freaking rare.

I have maybe 5 games for it right now. I did get a nice 2D fighting game, Darkstalkers something or other. Its a good fighting game, but it doesn't stand out from the rest of the Capcom crowd by any means. I got Resident Evil with it. I wont judge the system at all by that because its no where near exclusive. I think what is really getting under my skin about this thing is the prices are stupid high. The Saturn has to have more $80+ games then any other system I have yet collected. Every time I look online at reviews or list of games that look cool I find that they are all big money titles. Are there no titles for less the $30 that are recomendable? I don't mind spending money on games, but when I start a collection I look forward to getting 5 or 10 games to try the system out. I picked up a few (and aside from what I mentioned I don't remember titles sorry) and they aren't much to talk about. Even here I mention that I'm not interested in spending $100 on a game for a system I just got before I know that it has some things I know I can enjoy. What do I get recommended? House of the Dead, when I look it up its $100+, Gardian Heros, $100+.... I'll take my time and let the collection grow, but I'm still thinking this is going to be the one system I have a hard time caring for in the long run.

It would seem this rumor was never more then that. Thats always good to know. You can never be too careful with your super bad a$$ Sega hardware though.

There is a program for retial stores to order them from the company in bulk and resell them. That said I don't think any national chains carry anything like them yet. I have seen the GenMobile, RetroGen, and FC Mobile in my local classic game store, but never in a chain. The Nomad is a prize man. Keep it too if nothing else. I would love to find one I could test before buying it. I just hate to get something like that from the internets, you never know what you are really getting untill you have it.

I just got this thing a week ago, and so far I think I hate it. I picked up a few games for it (the ones I could find) and have played them a bit. I found a virtua stick, a 3D control pad (which I love) and the model 1 control pad. I replaced the internal clock battery as well. So I have fully functioning system I just need the action replay 1M/4M region break memory card deal. Before I buy another piece of $30 hardware for this thing though I have to stop hating it. I asked around the local scene and all everyone can tell me is how great Guardian Heros is. I'm sure its a great game, but I'm not putting $100+ in one game for a system I still need to be impressed with. I'm also hearing alot about the import games. I have no problem getting the action replay deal for that reason, but I do need to know I can get the games at a reasonable price and with relative ease. So, help me stop hating my Saturn. I always thought they were cool, turns out they might be if you can import the good games for the damned thing. Point me to something great, I have faith in the community.

There are two kinds of stores in my area that people think of as "antique stores". There are real antigue stores like you are used to seeing, and there are "junk stores" as I call them. They work like antique stores, people pay a monthly rate for a booth and sell their stuff through the owner of the store. The junk stores are covered in gaming stuff around here. The prices are just crazy! I really think the owners just know what the owner wants for the item and adds what they want on the fly to try to get as much as possible. I rarely buy anything from these places. I got 2 2600 sticks, both were in none working condition when I got them home, and despite the claim that they were perfectly working, I got nothing when I tried to bring them back. Gotta stay away from those places.

This might be a good time to mention something about the 32x however. There were a lot or rumors that the 32x would ruin Genesis games back in the day. Something about the connector size/shape in the 32x being off for the Genesis carts. I have never seen anything to support this, but it is something to be aware of as it is possible. I tend to remove my 32x is I want to go to Genesis games just in case. One can never be too careful when dealing with these things.

If you are talking about the PC game from the early 90s I'm with you, good stuff, once you speed the game play up with the cheat anyway. The 32x is one of my favorite systems. Mortal Kombat 2 on it is amazing for the time. There might not be a pile of greatness for the system, but its cool. The 32x is one of those things that you have to have to say you have it if nothing else.

Mutant League Football and Hockey. Streets of Rage 1 and 2 (I never cared for 3), Vecter Man 1 and 2, and Truxton. The spelling is likely off on all of that, but I'm tired and at work, so I can't get the games to be sure I'm right on all of that. The point stands, great games. Many of the above games are also great, these are just the ones I didn't see in those list.

I ended up playing TG-16 all night. Stupid Cyber Core has me hooked like mad right now. I also played some Black Ops on 360. Over all good night, no hangover this year!

Collecting was so easy for me in the 90s that I ended up giving things away that I wish I still had thinking it would always be about that easy. Thankfully many of the things I gave away came back to me anyway. Like others have mentioned, it wasn't collecting as we know it. It was finding those things and paying .50 for each game and playing with it for a while to remember and that was that. A few of us might have had enough games to call a collection, but no one really seemed to think of it that way. They were just old games sitting around. I remember buying "retro" from GameStop. I also remember thinking things were going to change a lot as soon as I heard they were stopping that. To compare it I guess I would have to say that people in the 90s put no value on these items. People now see news stories about a Nintendo selling for $100,000 and think they are worth that now, not knowing it was a super rare game that put it there. I get calls all the time from family members thinking I'm about to get crazy rich selling something they gave me for Christmas 20 years ago. A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing, and eBay gives the lazy only a very little bit of knowledge. This is why I think prices have gone up. Can't tell you how many people I have told in flea markets to sell it on eBay if they think they can get that money. They are quick to say "thats what they sell for on eBay". Moral of the story, global markets change everything, our hobby is no different. For better or worse.
