My very first try : ,1934
Tips :
On Faster levels :
- Stay at the extreme right of the screen : you'll have more time to move and avoid the purple pickles when they appear on the left side.
- Still staying on the right border of the screen, use only the up and down moves : it's less dangerous than to move left/right and this way it's easier to avoid the purple pickles.
- To have some seconds of pause, move the jaws on the line were the food is moving slowly.
- The most secure way to play : concentrate to avoid the purple pickles only, no need to score a lot in a round, it's better to score less at each round but to play longer : Play to stay alive, just try to avoid the purple pickles.

Damn, no more edit button
I forgot to say that some PAL carts doesn't have the "p" on the label.
In some cases, it's more efficient to test the cart on your system than to reffer only to the label to define it's format.
e.g. I own 2 Obelix PAL carts :
They haven't the same front label : the 2nd one is slightly different as the red title screen is very thin and cross all the label (it's not limited by the silver borders as the picture shown on the Atari Age Database).
One has the 'p' letter on the end label and the other not but both are PAL.
-
What makes the difference between the 7 and 10 rating is the system the cartridges were built for : NTSC = USA (and Japan if I'am not wrong) or PAL (Europe and some other contries)
Obelix PAL carts (p) were more produced than the NTSC ones.
So if your cart is NTSC, it's more rare and it's rating 10

Just an idea about the discalification rules :
"...If two members of the same team submit scores for the same event, the lower one will be disqualified, so be careful about what you submit... if a teammate of yours is only in 4 events, and you outscore him, you may end up disqualify your team entirely!..."
To avoid such disqualification problems, won't it be a good idea for each team member to submit their highscore in the event they played to the sport captain (the first person of the team list) using Private Messages and let him post the best scores ?

15,580 for my first submission.
1st Tip :
On the first wave, move your player immediatly after pressing the reset button : the enemies will appear but won't move for 1 - 2 seconds (but be careful they can fire), so you can use this time to position yourself at a strategic place (to anticipate their moves) and destroy 1 - 2 of them quickly.
2nd Tip :
After killing an enemy, you'll have a little period of time before another one appears : this period correspond exactly with one try for you to fire : if you miss your target another enemy will appear, if you kill it you'll have another same period of time to have another try to shoot again (and no new ennemy will appear) and so on..., so anticipate the ennemies moves to shoot them one after another without missing them... you'll finish each wave quickly

Yeah nice idea !!!
I'd like to join the CANADA TEAM

I agree with you... I was talking in a general way for the majority of a same game Title not for adaptations from one game to another where I don't know what they really did
I have only disassembled a few games so far, but quite often PAL conversions run slower than NTSC originals. This is especially true for Activision titles. But maybe Atari did a better job here, though it might not be possible to reproduce the speed 100% perfect.
The problem with fractional arithmetics is, that they require valueable additional RAM space (and more CPU time too). Though TAZ looks simple enough, so RAM shouldn't have been a big problem.
Hi thomas,
Thanks for your explanations and sharing your experience about NTSC to PAL conversions... so it seems I said some (little)
errors

Kudos = good job
Oh.... Thanks

- NTSC Games code is modified to run on PAL systems at the same speed than on NTCS VCS and vice-versaThat's not necessarily true I'm afraid. It's quite possible that when Atari created Asterix' date=' the only PAL modifications they did was add the extra scanlines in. Since the speed difference would only be apparent to the handful of hardcore people who owned both games. I don't know if this is what Atari did or not, but compensating for the speed difference would have been a lot more work.
In fact, I think the Master System had particular issues with this, where the European versions of some games just ran slower.

You tried the ROM' date=' right? Remember how you said about PAL games running slower? Games run automatically in NTSC... so if Asterix is PAL, then it would run faster. Force PAL on Asterix and see what happens.[/quote']You are right, sometimes I speak before thiking
As lee, for those wondering about the difference about NTSC/PAL Games speed just some infos :
- TV frequency is different 60 Hz NTSC / 50 Hz PAL and the number of lines to be displayed too 262 NTSC / 312 PAL.
- NTSC Games code is modified to run on PAL systems at the same speed than on NTCS VCS and vice-versa (technically fraction tables are used to control the speed of the moving objects, so the translation is easy from one system to anothe to obtain the same speed).... So:
- For a same game : the NTSC Cart runs on a NTSC VCS at the same speed that a PAL Cart on a PAL VCS : no advantage.
- A PAL cart will run faster on a NTSC VCS than on a PAL VCS.
- A NTSC cart will run slower on a PAL VCS than on a NTSC one.
Hope this'll help

Hi' date='Nope, it is a much-too-small pic of Buck Rogers (http://www.buck-rogers.com).
Kudos on your utility! I am programming a test cart using it.[/quote']
Oh yes I remember watching buck rogers episodes long time ago... so long time, I forgot what he was looking to
As I don't speak english/american very well I don't know the word Kudos.
What does it mean ?
Thanks

Touchy subject.PAL TVs scan at slower rate. PAL games alsways seem to play at a slower rate than NTSC. Do PAL Gamers have an advantage?
Just some thoughts.

Pertinent suggestion
So, I just downloaded both roms and tried them with the last version of stella : it seems the programmers have made somes modification to the timing code because asterix run faster than taz and makes the game harder !!!
have a try and you'll see the difference is significant.
As I'am not an expert gamer and I don't want to be penalized I'll play Taz.
Thanks Lee

I don't own Taz but but I own Asterix (AFAIK it is the same game with modified graphics). May I play Asterix on my real VCS or I'am obligied to participate playing Taz on an emulator ?I thought about this too... can anyone confirm that the only differences between the two games are the graphics? That is' date=' all the scoring, speed, and so forth are the same? If so, then I suppose it's alright.
--Zero[/quote']
According to atariprotos.com, the graphics were the only thing changed....
Thanks !!! indeed it's said :
"Since Taz was based of a popular American cartoon, Atari thought that overseas players might not know who Taz was. So Taz was changed to Asterix for European audiences. Asterix is a French cartoon character who was very popular over in Europe and Atari felt that European players could identify with him better. The game is exactly except for the graphics which were changed to match the new cartoon license. "
So if everybody is agree I'll play Asterix on my VCS. If don't, please let me know.
Thanks all and good game

OK, I replaced the vertical sync, vertical blank, and overscan areas in the source code with the code given in the Session 17: Asymmetrical Playfields - Part 1 tutorial by Andrew D. And I got it to work on a console! I don't know why the other code didn't work, I just know that the new code does!Hope this helps anyone that might be having a similar problem!

Hi,
Well as I run my programs only with emulators, I didn't knew there was problems on a real console.
I look at my code but I haven't found what could be the cause of the problem...
Maby some programming gurus here have the answer, I'd like to know what I made wrong... to correct my errors
Ooooooooooh if only the VCS could work as fine as the emulators
Just curious... is your avatar a picture of the "Logan's Run" movie ? I'am not sure.
-
Hi there!Hm... just downloaded the first of those demos and according to Z26 it assembles into a perfect 262 scanline generating NTSC programm, that should not roll...
Oh dear... Khryssun still didn't learn what symmetrical and asymmetrical means...

Please: This is definetely _not_ symmetrical:

Greetings,
Manuel
LOL
Hi Manuel,
Indeed... I should have read the Stella Manual Programmer's Guide too fast after drinking too much beer
.But I learnt... the right specification of such picture is duplication
Thanks
Take care,
Chris

I definitely prefer to feel the thrill to play games on the real 2600...
Please let me know,
Thanks

TIP : How to get the key easily (very useful on maps where your location isn't displayed e.g run 9)
Walk around in the maze to search teleportation doors (there are a lot and they are easy to find)... you get a lot of chances to get the key during the teleportation period. If it don't work the first time, repeat the operation again.
Usually I get the key using this tip with less than 3 teleportations.
after you'll just have to go to the right side to find the out door
Use without moderation

I read at Vintage gaming network they were released, but I can't find them to download on the web...
If someone has got a link (or wanted to email them directly to me), his help is welcome
Thanks
