  1. -------NEW INTEL--------

Notch has proposed a solution, that I surely hope they wont refuse.

He wants a 'Fight to the Death'!

AKA, best of 3 on Quake 3, him against their lawyers.

If notch wins, he gets to keep the title, if he doesnt he has to change it to something that is approved by bethesda.

Would the not be fun to watch? ;)

(ps, this is legit, he did actually propose that)

------------ Also he announced that minecraft would be finished as a full game on 11/11/11... does that date sound familiar? *cough* same release date as skyrim *cough*.

Heh. I'd pay money to watch that!

I know! Quake 3 is in my oppinion one of the best multiplayer shooters ever created. To see a game with that big a stakes would be really fun to watch.

  2. I dont think it looks too bad. I personally was the biggest fan of silent hill 4 though. Also I am happy about the new movie theyre releasing, I really enjoyed the first.

I must say though, the Silent Hill game for the PS Vita looks terrible. Who thought it would be a good idea to make it a multiplayer only top down style game. That basically removes the horror concept instantly when you make it a top down style game.

So it's fake? Just like everything else on the internet, I suppose.

+1 to cynicism on my character sheet, yet again.

I'm not saying it's fake, I'm saying the lawyers representing Bethesda are likely acting upon "Defend my IP" without really going over the details with the developers. This actually happens quite often with the lawyers representing Lucasfilm/Lucasarts.

    In fact, from Kotaku:

"Reached for comment by Kotaku, Notch said he had to eat dinner first. He's also cheerfully Tweeted that he still loves Bethesda ("This is hopefully just lawyers being lawyers.") and is looking forward to the company's Prey 2.

Just two month ago, Notch and Skyrim lead creator Todd Howard happily interviewed each other for Game Informer magazine. (Pictured left and watchable here). They seemed to get along very well. And Notch has even wanted to release the post-beta version of Minecraft officially on the same day as Skyrim, though he's since decided to bump it back a few days. All's seemingly going well with these two crews."

-1 to Perception on your character sheet.

Wouldnt you expect it to be zenimax that would do this stuff though.

  5. I played Diablo 2 religiously back in the day.

I had a lvl 91 sorc and I recall buying a Tals set for her off eBay for like $15.

There were always 1000's of Diablo 2 auctions going on eBay.

Back in those days people knew how to duplicate items. I think the Auction house is a good idea.

As long as they can keep people from duplicating items any ways. A super rare item, legitimately found could be worth a pretty penny!

Dang, I think the best I had was a lvl 70, and I played that non-stop...

... but yeah, that is the reason I find it such a good step. People are going to be selling and buying these items easier. This is cutting out the middle man, and now making it more accessible to everyone, while making blizzard some cash. It seems like a way to help everyone!

... and I really doubt they will have much ove a problem with hackers, if they manage to keep all those WoW players happy.

    On a side note:

I really hope the cow levels make an appearence.

  6. Notch is actually friends with some of the devs at Bethesda.

This is more likely a stunt pulled by the lawyers representing Bethesda, believing this to be a "smart move" now that Mojang is gaining popularity due to Minecraft.

I wouldn't be surprised if this gets dropped within the next week.

So it's fake? Just like everything else on the internet, I suppose.

+1 to cynicism on my character sheet, yet again.

    It could get dropped.

Notch actually posted one of the 15 page letter that the law team at bethesda sent him on the twitter.

    So its not fake...

He then send them a message in reply, asking to speak with them.

It may not ever make it to the court room, but that doesnt mean its not fake.

  7.

My main disagreement is with calling something an MMORPG when that first M stands for Massive, but the primary thing I think of is indeed the number of players you can interact with within the world. When I think MMO, I think of the possibility of having 50, 60, 100 players in one area (camera view and processing power permitting), often in many separate parties, duking it out with groups of monsters, each other, interacting with NPCs, or just passing by.

There are other things that make me think "MMO", but they get more complicated and a lot more blurry at this point though, and would require input from people much more experienced at MMOs than I am, so I'll save it for a separate thread regarding what gives an MMORPG that first M. (Preferably made by someone else, because I don't even know where to begin!

    Agreed.

Having played more than a few, yeah, there's a difference, and many just ignore the line that includes, or does not include, the "MM" part of MMORPG.

    MMORPGs -

    World of Warcraft

    Anarchy Online

    Everquest

    MORPGs -

    PSO

    Guild Wars

    Diablo, I guess

If you're not running around seeing hundreds of others while doing your own thing, and I don't mean in a "lobby area", then drop the first M.

Guess that is a better way to define it... ill keep that in mind next time i go to call diablo an mmorpg

  8. When I registered my trademark they specifically told me I could not stop anyone from using the word "gamer" in their name. "Scrolls" is a pretty common word used in video games and I doubt anything will come of this.

Its bizarre though, theyre are a lot of words that can kind of be seen trademarked (the best example I can think of is how all the HTC Droid phones have to pay royalties to George Lucas, because he has Droid copyrighted). Yet the term scroll has been around for such a long time.

Its silly stuff like this that really scares me, where the little guy cant move an inch without having lawsuits surround him.

  9. I am not a fan of Bethesda's games at all, feeling they are one of the worst batch of talent out there (in comparison to many other companies)...

... and although I hate their games, I never had anything to dislike about the company themselves. I don't mind that they're creating crappy games, letting their servers get hacked, and in turn loosing lots of valuable customer data. As long as they dont have a negative effect on the game industry, or better yet, the consumers of this industry.

The lawsuit comes into play over Notch (the head honcho of minecraft), having been working on a new game called 'scrolls', which is like a mixture of a role playing game, board game, and collectible card game. The problem is all 100% in the name. Bethesda is suing due to the fact that 'The Elder Scrolls' and 'Scrolls' are too similar, and demands that they change their games name.

One thing that is really stupid about this as that people seem to only refer to their new game as 'Skyrim', not 'The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim', making the lawsuit unnecessary.

One common theme around this story on various websites is that Minecraft and Skyrim are being released on the same day, and this may Bethesda acting out against it losing some of its shine. Although I doubt this to be true, it is still a possibility.

The reason this upsets me is that I really hate when the big companies bully the little companies, this happened to my favorite energy drink called 'Freak' whom was sued by 'Monster' for stealing their style or design or something like that. Freak having weak lawyers, is no longer in existence.

...and supposedly this is just the start of Bethesda's legal department going crazy. More is supposedly to come. I wish LulzSec was never caught. I feel like Bethesda deserves another nice hacking after this bull. It seems like hackers are the only ones who can actually make a negative impact on a company, when they are being bad.

So, that being said, now I have a fourth company to add to my hate list (Apple, Nintendo, EA, and Bethesda).

I dont mind when companies try to make money, after all thats the whole point of a company, but I feel like this is completely unnecessary, and wouldnt effect Bethesda in anyway at all!

This simply feels like the big guy trying to push down the little guy, just because they know they can win...

Anyway... whats your thoughts behind Bethesda, and them suing Notch?

Do you think its silly that a company can hold a trademark for a single word that has been around for such a long time?

PS. Notch filed for the patient of the title Scrolls a while ago.

    -------------on a side note----------------

I didnt feel this was worthy enough of its own thread. Yet I found it very interesting. John Carmack (programmer of doom + quake), of id software, was talking about looking back at the atari 2600(having owned one as a kid), and although he doubts he will find the time to, would love to try and program a game for it. He also seemed rather intrigued by the people whom still do focus their skills on stuff like that.

He mentioned this during quake-con, just a day or two ago, and I found it very interesting, seeing as I love his work.

  10. Word on the street is that Diablo III requires an online connection even in solo mode. Plus, I have never heard of Diablo being referred to as an MMORPG. It's a fancy, real-time version of Rogue, at best.

I have. It's usually considered an MMORPG by people (mainly PSO fans from my experience) who think that four players is massive, let alone eight.

I really think they should jsut scrap the whole solo mode, but it will required a connection, to prevent mods.

What else would you call it, its an rpg, with millions of players... Who doesnt call it an mmorpg?

Elder Scrolls is an RPG with millions of players...

Elder scrolls (terrible game) isnt online compatible though is it?

Thats why Im assuming Diablo 3 is an MMORPG, because it has loads of players, is an rpg, and is heavy on the online aspect.

Also, I have never played Phantasy Star Online (I never had a dreamcast), the only MMORPGs ive played in my life were RuneScape, Diablo II, and some random independent one... Im really not to big into that scene.

So are you just in a disagreement with it being called an MMORPG, because you are limited to the amount of players per World.

Which im not saying is wrong, that might perfectly well mean its not techniqually an MMORPG.

  11. DRM, online leashes, and in-game transactions on intangible goods using real money. If somebody asks me why I don't do modern gaming I can point to these three things.

I think it would be silly to expect an MMORPG to not be required to be online, after all that is what the 'o' stands for... and you can still use in game coins to buy the items, its not like most microtransactions, where the only way to get the good, is through paying real cash.

  12. I was thrilled about D3 until I heard about the online teather. Then I decided not to buy it. However, though I agree that the in-game auction with real cash is a good business decision on Blizzard's end, a lot of people will end up getting screwed. There will be the guys who figure out how to hack (as there always are) and make it really easy to find rare/valuable items. Then they will sell them in the auction house for cash to n00bs who think that BUYING that super duper sword/shield/armor is going to make you good at the game. What's the point if all I have to do is fork over another twenty or thiry bucks for the better items and then own the shit out of the honest players?

This game is supposed to have the lack of mod support. I think after controlling WoW for so many years, blizzard should know how to prevent that kind of stuff.

  13. In this day of age, the industry is all about making money, whether it harms the consumer or not. *cough* EA *cough

Yet Blizzard has found a way to do this, that is mutually beneficial to both the consumer and their company. They have set up an auction house in this game. This auction house has two ways of paying for an item, through in game coins, or through real world cash. So basically, if you find a really rare item in game that you dont want, you can put your item in the auction house, to make real world cash! Im sure it wont total that much, well at first, but the higher level you become, the better stuff you will find, the more money you will make. The fact is that I would be playing this game either way, because I love the diablo series, and now I can make real world cash for playing! Im sure it wouldnt even come close to the amount of money being made at a minimum wage job, however, Im going to be playing this game for my own enjoyment anyway!

(its kind of like an in game ebay, where you place an item, set limits and stuff, and then people bid on the item)

Obviously Blizzard will pocket probably over 10% of the sale, making it beneficial to them as well.

Along with this, the game is designed to use such a small amount of bandwidth, that it wont cost too much to for them to maintain.

The thing is, people would have just sold gold and stuff on ebay or a website, thats what happens with WoW. So theyre just making it easier for everyone to sell what they dont want, whether their character class doesnt take it, or they want to go buy a cheeseburger.

The only problem I see with this, is items actually worth something, will cost an un-godly amount of coins. Yet still, the point of an RPG is to work up, until you can afford something like that. I personally like to only use items ive found too, just because it has sentimental value to it :P.

Also this gives people a lot more of a reason to try and hack the game...

I personally think this is amazing of Blizzard,

that is assuming that Diablo 3 is free to play, as Diablo 2 was (hasnt been confirmed yet).

I hope more companies follow this trend of finding a mutually beneficial way to earn a constant revenue from their consumers.

What are your thoughts on this?

Do you think this is a good movement as opposed to the trend EA has started?

Do you want to see more games do this?

Is anyone else absolutely thrilled about diablo 3?

  14. I'm not too happy about this:

    http://www.destructoid.com/diablo-iii-requires-permanent-online-connection-207627.phtml

Granted, I have an internet at home and whilst I only get an outage once every month or so (comcast) it pains me to think if I don't have internet access for WHATEVER reason, I wont be able to play alone (offline) to enjoy this "RPG".

I've been really looking forward to Diablo III for years but right now there are other options out there. Many of them. I'm thinking things like do I still get the game when it goes down in price? :? Cause I'm a rabid fan of Diablo but I dont want to support this sort of thing at all.

This really sucks. Its easy for me to bash a publisher for sticking "online only" on a game I dont care for like Final Fight by Capcom but when its on a series you deeply cared for like Diablo it really hits home.

    :(

Looks like I'm really happy to have lots of other games to play.

The game just isnt fun without the mmo aspect of it. This is the problem I have with games like Skyrim, If im going to take all this time to level up this character and make something I truly find bada$$, I want to be able to flaunt it, to make me feel like I am better than someone... when I obviously am not.

    ---------------

Also for obvious reasons they could not merge the game so an account can be used both online and offline. This is kind of a way to make sure someone doesnt spend a lot of time on a character, and then expect to be able to bring that online. Causing them to get enraged an blizzard.

  15. Well, it sure beats being murdered in a fake car crash.

RIP Virtual Boy creator Gunpei Yokoi.

    AX

Maybe the modern president of nintendo is afraid of getting murdered as well, so he tried to appease everyone with a salary cut :P

All joking aside, I doubt Gunpei Yokoi was intentionally killed, I mean he did create the Game Boy after all.

If he was killed, it was for resigning from nintendo the year prior, as opposed to creating the virtual boy in (i believe) '93.

Actually, if it wasn't for this story, I would have just figured that 3ds was mostly according to plan, and the higher initial prices were to avoid shortages, as with the wii. 3ds may be in real, don't-bother-with-it-at-any-price, DOA trouble.

Hmmmm I dunno. That high price did seem crazy, even to me.

I just assumed they were making up for the last 2 years of crap Wii sales.

You might want to be careful making post like this though... you don't want to be labeled a conspiracy theorist on AA now do you!?

I suppose next you'll want the undisputed proof Bin Laden was killed released?

Hey, Im kind sketchy on the Bin Laden thing, only because the government was so weird about everything. If they wouldve stated there was not pictures, I wouldve believed, but they stated theyre were, and said they would show everyone, but then didnt.

Also Obama's speech really pissed me off, it seemed like it was all his doing... and gave no one else credit, didnt even pay the team the $1mil DOA they had on BinLadens head... Either way, it all just seemed like Obama wanted to make up for the lack of change we got, in hopes for winning the next election...

You cant denie that they government was really stupid around the whole subject... after all, we did the noble thing and killed Bin Laden and buried in the way he wanted, when we wouldnt even let Sadam be killed in front of a firing squad like he wanted.

Sigh, not getting too political but I too saw Obama's speech and nowhere in it did he strike me as taking credit for himself. In fact most of it was praise for the ''valiant'' efforts of our armed forces. Besides keep one thing in mind, he is the Commander and Chief so he more than likely ordered the raid in the first place. I get the feeling if the mission had failed and the Navy Seals killed or captured, Obama would have been given all the blame by the Republicans. But enough politics as it is.

"... so shortly after taking office, I contacted the CIA, to make thing killing of capture of Osama the top priority"

" last week, i determined we had enough intelligence to take action, and authorized and operation to get osama binladen, today, at MY direction, the united states..."

"over the years I made clear, that we would take action"

ect, none of the information regarding himself was required or necessary, and for that, it made it sound like his re-election was important.

Either way, he lost my believe when he did that health care bill, that will only cost the american budget a lot of money, and now hes focusing on eleminating things like that...

  16. Supposedly, the date is set at 12/31/11 right this moment,it could change here. :)

Also, all launch titles have a set date of 1/1/12 at this moment too,it could change. :)

Don't you hate the suspense and waiting?

I want to hear more info on it!! :(

Thats not actually the release date, thats Companies going off of Sony saying it would be out before the end of this year, so they put the latest date possible. Most of those games are coming out on release as well.

Im starting to believe we wont get it till march of next year though, thats what happened with the 3ds, and the original psp. Japan got it before the holiday session, everyone else had to wait.

  18. I found this interesting, and thought Id share it with the Atari Age forums.

Due to the poor sales of the 3DS (and companies pulling titles for the system), Nintendo felt they needed to do something drastic, thus the Future Price Cut was in order.

Though Nintendo is strong believers in keeping a positive net revenue, so they felt the need to significantly reduce a lot of peoples salaries

that are high up in the company.

Thus the President, reduced his salary 50%, and many others did around 30% as well.

Now if only American companies would be noble like that when something goes sour.

If he keeps up this trend though, Im wondering how little he will be making after the Wii U flops =P,

there was a pretty interesting article about how the Japanese arent even really exited about it.

    Link to brief article

  19. EA has been starting some awful trends, that many companies later pick up on.

Ive refused to buy EA games for awhile now, due to the shit theyve been doing. This doesnt surprise me at all, being as its coming from EA in all... though id expect them doing this as an attack against steam, who knows though.

    EA is just terrible.

  20. My son just called and said that he downloaded the NetFlix app for his 3DS and is currently watching Mr. Bean on it.

Question..... Besides NetFlix, there are now games on the 3DS like Zelda: Link's Awakening, Donkey Kong 94, Super MarioLand, and Kirby's Dreamland. None of these are available for the DSi XL. Is there something about the 3DS that is different so that these games aren't playable on my DSi or is it just Nintendo trying to increase sales of the 3DS by having attractive software?

Just curious, not ranting or anything.

    Mendon

Yeah, next year the nintendo Wii will be dropped as well. Nintendo, like most companies only care about the 'now'. With the Wii U coming out next year, they announced that they will stop productions of games and everything for the Original Wii.

Now if the WII U doesnt sell to well, they are likely to keep the wii alive a bit longer (this is what happened to the PS2 when the PS3 came out).

Though I did believe the 3DS does have more power than the DSi, so the games might not work on that anyway, even if nintendo wanted them to. Still, the DS lite was $130 on launch, and the 3DS is $250, after technology has advanced so much, that they can make systems for a lot less... Nintedo is really milking this 3DS for more than its worth, which may explain why sales are so low.

It is sweet to see that netflix has made it to the 3DS though, if it comes to the vita, ill get a subscription to netflix.

  21. Hopefully there is TV out on the Vita.. and it actually stretches the full-screen. If it does, I will buy it.

The PSP had that tv out, but the vita will not. Sorry to inform you.

    -----EDIT--------

    Didnt mean to double post.

  22. Nintendo better get some good games out on the 3DS, fast!

I'd be careful of any trailer from Sony about how impressive their next out console is going to be. For instance in their trailers of how awesome the PS1 and PS2 were, they released footage of the consoles running pre-rendered video. And sure it was "Actual game footage" but not anything you'd see during actual game time in terms of quality.

I have watched actual game footage of tekken VS Street Fighter and the graphics are that good.

... but at the same time. With a quad core 2gHz processor (only 3 used in game)... and an OLED screen at 960 x 544 at 220 ppi. You cant go wrong. For all im concerned, my monitor is making it look worse than it actually is.

The Zune HD makes everything look gorgeous with its oled scren, and thats only 167 ppi.

If anyone should be accused of this, nintendo used an xbox 360 during their press release, making it seem like wii U graphics. After being caught saying, "well we thought the would be a good representation of how good it will look"

Though I do think the PS vita will have to fight more against mobile gaming than the 3DS. Seeing as the Vita is based on how powerful it is. Yet a year after its release phones will be twice as powerful, seeing as the phone technology is increasing at such a high rate. Though I think companies will be willing to invest a good amount into a game for the vita, where as they dont want to invest in much for the iPad, because theyll only get a dollar per sale, and if they make the price higher, it wont sell.

Hmmm, I'm starting to get interested in this. At least it's less gimmicky than 3DS (A $250 DS with PSP-level graphics, three-dee, and an analogue stick? Whoop-de-doo).

This holiday season they are trying to get games out there. They announced Mario Kart, Star Fox, and I think a Mario title. So theyre trying.

  23. Hi there!

From official sources it seems Xevious will follow Excite Bike and Urban Champion most likely comes in 3rd.

But is there anywhere a confirmed list of the other upcoming titles to be released in this series?

I'm especially interested in infos regarding if/when Mega Man 2 will be part of it :)

    Greetings,

    Manuel

They should just 3D-in-ize super mario bros 3. Just because you know the fake die hard NES fans would go crazy and be opt to buy that (in my opinion) silly system.

Why did they ever think having 2 screens was a good idea! The only practical time Ive seen it used, was to select a pokemon attack... but at the same time, why do you have the 4 buttons then? This problem still bothers me.

... but seriously, what good is two screen? Most games try and connect the screens anyway, living a HUGE gap, making playing the game twice as hard as it should be.

    ---------EDIT---------

I looked at you profile picture, and it confused me. So I went to wikipedia, and looked up Infogrames Entertainment. Reading the brief history of them, they seem to constantly be losing money, how the hell do they keep buying companies out if they are such a mess with their money? Is it true that they are buying good companies almost to bring them down with them?

Thats what I got from my 5 minute glance at wikipedia.
