  1. So what happens next? Anyone want to make a guess?

Also no one has answered the million dollar question. Why?!

I already read one very intelligent post in this thread that speculated the RetroVGS people blew their funding early buying parts and the rights to the Coleco brand. And that this latest prototype was merely a scam designed to help them raise money to make a real product. That seems logical, right? But here's the thing...

It's so painfully obvious that they were going to get caught. This community is filled with people who really know their stuff. That's part of the reason I come here. The discussions on Atari Age are fascinating because we have so many skilled and knowledgeable people in our midsts. Many of them are industry veterans, authors, or people have made their own products.

There's no way the RetroVGS crew was going to get away with this scam. Absolutely no way. It just wasn't going to happen. Their lie was uncovered in a matter of hours after the pic was posted. So then why would they do it? They had to know they were going to get caught. After all, these people are familiar with this community.

Again, is this just a case of incredible hubris? Contempt? Laziness? Is it someone's idea of a bad joke? Because if it was just a money scam these people are the worst cons in the history of the game. I'm sure many of you could think of a better way to fake something like this.

  2. They aren't that clever. If they did, they would do it right the first time. See also satirical posts by BunnyBoy on social media. That's how you do it. Get it right first, then crack all the jokes you want.

It's funny that you mention him. He's making a great product IMO, and with a lot less fanfare, attention and support than the RetroVGS / Coleco Shameleon.

EDIT: I guess that's what I'm trying to understand here. What the heck is the motivation here? Is it pure contempt? Is it total hubris? Is it lulzy trolling? I just cant see any logical reason for any of the decisions they have made with this product. To put it bluntly, I am baffled.

  3. I have an interesting conspiracy theory. Please forgive me if it sounds a bit crazy. This might just be the Mountain Dew and popcorn talking.

What if we're all being deliberately trolled? I know the obvious replies to this question would include things like brand damage, trashing their reputation, alienating potential consumers, fraud, etc. Even as I type this post the idea that we're being deliberately trolled doesn't seem likely.

But what if we are being trolled? I just checked in with my Facebook account and this story is all over the place. It's blowing up like crazy. What if they show up in a week with a totally working prototype and are like "ha, ha, fooled you!" This whole story does seem like obvious bait.

Again, seems very unlikely but I just had to mention the idea.

  4. I wish there were more opportunities to try before you buy. How great is it to go to a convention like PRGE or CGE and visit the Atari Age booth? You can sample all the latest wares and never wind up regretting your purchase. I'd like to see more demos and more game play videos on YouTube.

Honestly, this topic just reminds me that there's a lot of stuff I need to pick up on the AA store.

The coin will be limited to just 1000 units and will come in exclusive PRGE packaging. If you can't make it to the show, do not worry, we have got you covered! We have created a special "Collector's Club" for people who have been following this promotion over the years. Normally you need to send us a picture of at least 5 of our previous coins. Doing this will get you into the club, which is limited to 100 members. This will also guarantee that you will receive all coins for the following year (2016), without having to resend your information every time a new contest or give away is posted.

One last thing. Here's a pic of the Zombie Zine. It's called Zine of the Living Dead. Here we see horror legend George A. Romero giving our zine his seal of approval. Unfortunately shortly after taking this picture he bit me and I am now infected with the zombie virus.

More information, rules and a must read disclaimer on the site. Good luck! Please come back and post in this topic if you win a prize this year.

Special thanks to everyone at AtariAge.com for allowing me to post this contest every year. If anyone has any questions about the contest please don't hesitate to contact me.

    F.A.Q.:

Q: Why do you do this?

A: Because I'm crazy. I also love collecting vintage arcade tokens.

Q: Do you make any money on this promo?

A: No. We lose money every year.

Q: Do you like Hormel Spam?

    A: Yes, it's delicious.

Q: Why does it take so damn long to get a token?

A: Because only one person handles the mailing. I don't trust anyone but myself.

Q: Are you really a doctor?

A: No, but I do play one on the Internet.

  8. Hey Everyone,

It appears that the box for my Sega CDX has gone missing after a recent move. I am very heartbroken by its loss. This was always one of my favorite consoles.

I am looking to buy just the packaging and inserts for a Sega CDX. No reasonable offer refused. Thanks very much.

  9. I don't recall it whatsoever, meaning it had no impact on my young life. I'm fond of saying it wasn't really a crash but rather a drastic market adjustment.

I still played tons of video games and so did all my friends. I continued to buy games with whatever little money I had at the time. None of my friends talked about the crash nor did any of us know anything about it. In the world of my childhood it was business as usual. I kept rocking my Atari 2600 for many years, even after I had purchased newer and more powerful game systems.
