  1. I'm happy to see other Atari fans defending E.T. I get really sick of the "worst game ever made" spin. It's not even close to being the worst game ever made. It's not even in the top 50, or bottom 50 depending on how you rank the list.

  2. Because of legal troubles, this year's coins will have the head of Bryan Cranston on them instead of a Space Invader. :D

It's funny that you mention their temporary legal troubles. It appears a very bitter, very petty human being contacted Square-Enix / Taito and told them that the site was "selling" the arcade tokens in question. (long story.) Can you believe it? Of course anyone who follows that site knows the tokens have alway been available free of charge to anyone who wanted one, no matter where they lived in the world.

After a few days of legal wrangling, and some back in forth between the lawyers, the tokens have returned to the site. (And it's great to know an attorney who works pro bono. :) )

The tokens will return for a fourth year and production has already begun on the new coins (with a brand new design). It was metioned in this article that previous tokens would not be available in future promotions. And that's mainly because there are none left. "Emerald Token Club" members are also currently voting in secret on the new design, which is being created by a very well known artist. This will definitely be the best coin so far.

Fun Facts: Over 10,000 tokens have been distributed since 2009, to all 50 US states and to 28 countries world wide. Roughly three dozen celebrities have recevied these tokens, including Leonard Nimoy, Kevin Smith, Jeff Bridges, Vern Troyer and literally dozens of notable video game industry legends including Miyamoto, Peter Molyn

    ux, Yuji Naka and more.

Disney briefly produced Tron arcade tokens for the premiere of Tron Legacy. The story goes like this. DTB was distributing these tokens at E3 2009 when a man from the Disney corporation approached them and asked "where did you get these tokens made?" DTB hooked them up with their supplier and the rest is history. There is also a small tribute to DTB's version of Doctor Gonzo (which is slightly different from the movie version) in the game "Dead Rising 2: Off the Record." (You have to know what to look for, but once you do, well... it's very funny.)

So anyway, if you have any of the original tokens, hold on to them, because they are no longer available. And if you're interested in the new coins, well get in line early because in the tradition of upping the ante each year... (I've said too much.)

Very special thanks to Atari Age for allowing digthatbox.com to post this topic on the site. In fact the DTB has something very special planned just for AA members, you should hear more about it sometime in the future. Call it their way of saying thanks. :)

  4. I think some people underestimate the popularity of the Flashback Series. They're showing up on places that don't usually carry video games like Urban Outfitters and various supermarkets. I have even found them in music stores. If this product had the right marketing, and the right person to sell it, our machine could be a big success. People want to play Atari 2600. It's iconic, the games are simple and fun, and it's graphics have aged like digital art.

What do I want from this system? I want more than a clone. I want something superior to the original console. Here's my features wish list.

    1. Cartridge Port

    2. SD Cart Slot

    3. Corded and Optional Wireless Controllers

    4. Select and Reset Buttons on the controllers.

    5. HDMI Port

    6. Must come bundled with traditional controllers and paddles.

    7. Light Sixer body design.

    8. Built in games. As many as possible.

Here are some great suggestions from this topic:

Schizophretard, Gorfcadet and Roland P all mentioned scaling hardware to help with lag on flat screen TV's. That's vital for a product like this one.

theloon suggested the inclusion of AtariVox and SaveKey. That's a great idea and it would make this product more than just a clone.

Karokoenig mentioned a PAL / NTSC switch. I love this idea. And maybe it would help with selling the product around the globe?

  5. This is a topic that has been lingering in my mind for a couple of weeks. And since I'm always the inquisitive type I need to post this question.

Would you support a crowd funded, brand new, Atari 2600 console?

I know this forum has shown a mixed reaction towards products like the Atari Flashback. At the same time the popularity of that device, along with other "modern retro consoles" like the Hyperkin RN3, proves there is a healthy interest in classic hardware.

So let's just say for the sake of discussion that a motivated invidual on this forum is going to produce a new Atari 2600 console. He or she is going to create this console using direct input from the Atari Age community. Everyone here will get to voice their opinion. And the console will be funded through kickstarter backing. Would you fund this project?

Also, do we simply produce a modern 2600 clone or do we make improvements on the original design? And if you're in favor of improvements, what kind would you make? Internal, external, cosmetic, AV related? Do you upgrade the hardware itself, making the system more powerful? What about features like SD card support, wireless controllers, HDMI ports, etc?

Does the system mimic the style of the original woodgrain or do we go for something totally modern and completely different?

And here's the "million dollar question." How much do you think a project like this might cost? I know that some of you might be able to give a very informed answer to this question as you've had experience with production and manufacturing.

And what is the legality here? Are we covered by the same laws that allow the production of console on a chip systems?

One last thing, I must say this entire topic is inspired by some of the replies I received in my "Let's buy Atari" topic. I loved reading your replies. As a community, Atari Age is one of the most interesting forums on the web. So thanks for humoring me when I post topics like this one. I look forward to reading your replies.

  6. Here's the million dollar question...

Even if "we" managed to come up with the scratch, who exactly would then steer the ship so to speak? How would that be decided even? It would take a massive amount of $10 donations to see this happen in the real world...so, with so many hypothetical investors, who would actually be in charge? Just curious.

Clearly, I would be the maniacal Steve Jobs personality and all would bow unquestionably to my will.

But seriously, that is a good question. I figured it would be the largest financial contributor and / or Albert.

  7. As you may have heard Atari Inc. is filing for bankruptcy. [source]

Let's purchase the Atari brand and revitalize it as we see fit. How much are you willing to contribute to be a shareholder in the new Atari Age owned Atari Inc?

And here's the million dollar question; What is the value of the Atari Brand? Realistically how much do you think a company would spend just to purchase the Atari brand?

And if you owned the Atari brand do you think you could make it profitable once again? How would you leverage the brand and the Atari back catalog?

  8. I was driving around with a 17" color TV on the back seat of my car.

In the trunk I had a 2600 and a bag full of games. My friends and I would sneak into various buldings, squat for the evening, and play Atari games all night. This was the late 90s.

Soon after I started vising flea markets, goodwill, etc. I drove hundreds of miles just to find Atari games. That's when I realized that I had a serious collecting habit.

  9. Sega is not deleting videos of their new game Shining Ark but of videos for the old shining games Shining Force 3 and, probably more importantly, Shining The Holy Ark. Due to the similar names, you get more results for their old games than you get for the new game when searching on YouTube. This is something they want to stop, since they apparently regard YouTube as an important part of their marketing, but don't care for neither the old Shining games nor the fanbase of these games -- to the point that they would rather destroy the work of these passionate hardcore fans.

I love youtube and I think it's one of the greatest reporting tools ever created. That's why I felt the need to share this important information, as I'm sure some of you may have cotent related to the Shining Series on your channels. Some people haven't even received a warning, they were just hit with multiple copyright strikes and the had their channels shut down.

I have removed all Shining Series content from our channel and I am considering removing ALL Sega related content from all of my YouTube channels. I see this as an attack on both the loyal fans of this series and on YouTube itself. As far as I am concerned Sega no longer has my support, and I regret purchasing Sonic All-Stars Racing and will think twice about purchasing another Sega title.

  10. Would it be possible to create a mascot fighter using just Atari characters?

Let's create a hypothetical lineup of characters for this game. The roster can include anyone from Atari history, starting with the Atari 2600 all the way up to the Jaguar. You could even be creative and use real world Atari legends like Nolan Bushnell.

Now I want to make it clear that I'm not talking about the possiblity of a Smash Bros game on the 2600, but rather a modern fighter that uses characters from Atari history. I just posted this in the 2600 section because to me it was the golden age of atari, and it's the Atari console most recognized by gamers around the world.

I've been racking my brain to think of potential roster candidtates but first I want to hear from the experts.

    What do you think?

  11. $199 seems kinda steep, and for just a little more money you could buy the Omega consolized MVS kit from Arcade Works.

Our definitions of 'a little more money' are way off from each other. Given that the Omega costs $499, I'd consider that a huge difference. http://arcadeworks.n...nt-machine.html

You do have a valid point though. It's possible to pick up a CMVS for about $250. It isn't portable though.

The Kit is only $300. Of course you do need the Neo Geo hardware. I've been in the market for a consolized MVS for a while and I can't decide between the Omega Kit and the Analogue Interactive machine.

The portable angle of this device is what intrigues me the most. Look at this thing, its like the son of Neo Geo Pocket.

  12. I just found a great case for Lynx games at my local Target.

Each section holds 10 to 12 games. And the case itself holds roughly 30 games, depending on the cart style (curved end vs. straight end)

The case has a fairly secure lid, nothing like tupperware, but it does the job. They come in two colors, clear and pink, and two styles. The other style (not pictured) is a square case with four sections You can find them in the dollar section at Target.

  13. I asked Joe Santulli about this at the E3 Expo. At the time he had told me that Atari Age had not confirmed their attendance for CGE 2012. The show just wont be the same without the amazing AA store and the Retro Gaming Rumble.

I think that's why they're doing to recreation of the Nintendo World Championships. Maybe to replace the retro rumble.
