I think, I know what you mean. In the Coleco version you can stay on stage one in the middle and jump every car and earn a bonus. So you can get easily Mega-highscores and you can watch a movie while playing the game. 

I don't know the 8bit (or 5200) version not so good, but I think this one is more difficult and appropriate for a contest.

I use an ultimate joystick and play via Altirra.

3rd stage is too much for me. 

Extremely unfair programmed for a home console game on the lowest level.

The 3rd stage is extremely difficult. I can remember that I have never mastered it in a usual setting.

It was really a photo finish. 

Your score was in the range of my personal best (106 K in an earlier HSC), so I knew I can manage it.

This was a very long night for me.
