  1. Any update for Byte Before Christmas? (or availabilty on Stella's Stocking) We want to give the gift of Atari this year to Jen's brother's family. We want to give them a nice "starter system lot", and get them a shiny new holiday-themed homebrew as well -to introduce them to the great games still being made :-)

  2. You don't need to "fix" the Sega controller as it should already work assuming it's of the 3-button variety. Six-button Genesis controllers can be made compatible using a reverse-bias diode between the Genesis VCC and Select lines. To make the NES controller compatible with Princess Rescue, just direct wire the plus pad (joystick) and "A" button (fire) between ground and their respective Atari pins. The "B" button connects to the Paddle line with a pull up resistor from VCC to hold it high until it is pressed for second button operation. This would sever the same function as the "C" button on the Genny for Princess Rescue and other homebrew use.

In fact, since the 10k pull-up resistors are already included on the PCB, the 4021 chip can be de-soldered from the NES PCB, and use a 9-pin serial cable or Genesis extension cable to wire directly onto the through holes from the removed 4021 IC. IMO even though the mod is easy to pull of, it's still a lot of work just to mod an NES controller to work with one Atari homebrew game (Princess Rescue), especially since a stock unmodded 3-button genesis controller is cheaply obtainable and will work just fine. I don't believe Zippy utilizes the "C" button on Genesis controllers, although I could be wrong. Genesis is the proper controller to use for Sonic Zippy anyway.

Yep, I know what you're saying about the genesis controller just working. But, the one we have laying around is non-functional. That's what I meant about "fixing" it. Might just need a cleaning -haven't gone through it yet.

Much appreciated about the info on the NES controller, though. It may be trivial, and nothing really spectacular ly worthwhile, but it will be a fun little project and it will definitely help me in continuing to build upon my electronics knowledge. Your info will be very helpful. Thanks!

  3. Yes, because we all know Atari carts play great on Sega systems. I think they even made an Atari adapter for Genesis. Oh, wait, that was Sega Master System. :ponder:

At least you can use a Genesis controller with the Atari if you like.

Yeah, I was referring to the cartridge style Sega did when they made games for the 2600. I will have to fix our Genesis controller before then to play it with this, though!! I still need to get a NES controller to modify for using that to play Princess Rescue :rolling:

  4. Play Medieval Mayhem instead. The difficulty switches control paddle direction for the top castles.

This has been on my short list for a while. I think it just moved up a couple notches w/ this

You're supposed to lay the TV on it's back and each person stands at the appropriate corner of the screen, looking down, while playing.

    There's a great idea for a bar/cocktail cabinet!

  5. So, we had the fam playing Warlords the other night and I got stuck playing the upper-right corner. This has got to be my least favorite corner. The controls seem backwards, and I often find myself starting off one way just to find out I'm actually moving the wrong way, or I'm not moving at all because I'm at the limit and then have to find "the range" again.

This got me thinking about what everyone else's thoughts are on this. What is everyone's least favorite corner? What is everyone's favorite? My favorite would have to be lower-right.

  6. Will you be sending out carts first with option of separate boxes being sent to those customers later? Or, is everything being sent out at same time now (loose carts, boxed copies, etc.)? Also, is the t-shirt set-in-stone at this point, or is a scarf still a viable option? The scarf really intrigued me and I was stoked at the possibility!

  7. From collecting and refurbishing lots of used controllers, and seeing the kinds of things that can happen to them in long-term storage, I try to be especially careful about the cables. One thing I would definitely not recommend: tightly coiling the cables for storage, like this ...

That's a good note about the cables. And something I'll definitely have to keep in mind!

  8. ...when you're not playing with them

I have a bunch of joysticks and paddles I need to get organized when not in use. I was originally intending to put them in one of those Atari Hot Wheels POP displays. But the K-mart I supposedly had mine secured at after they sold their cars (they never did sell any) disposed of it :( -if anyone has one, I would definitely be interested.

So, I was wondering how everyone else organized/displayed their joysticks. Or, what people had for ideas for doing such.

  9. Thanks for the heads up. My payment will be sent on Thursday (10-10-2013), when I get paid. Payment sent. (just discovered a misplaced payment to me no one told me I got in -lol)

997 is the number I'll throw in the ring to start that off.

  10. First off, I'd like to say I love the game and it is a great piece of work! With that out of the way, I wish to add at least some of my hardware to the list of ones having the off-screen collision issues.

I have noticed collision issues on my Sears Video Arcade II, can't recall if they were existent on my heavy 6 (played briefly), and my light 6 I can't test on at the moment as it's in temporary storage as we renovate the girls' room. I will plan to do more extensive testing on my other 2 consoles this weekend and report back.

I only state this so it can benefit further development on these systems. As a fellow programmer (not of VCS yet), I understand the great benefit to having specific platform nuances documented.

  11. +1 for cleaning the cart.

Even though it was new, that just means the contacts have been sitting untouched for ~30 years! There could be light corosion on the contacts from just sitting exposed to air. This would usually be kept cleaner by actual play of the cart -the action of inserting the cart, and then removing, can somewhat keep the contacts of the cart clean by an abrading action with the contacts in the cartridge slot on the console.
