menu is so barebones.....
Btw is it possible to play on windowed mode? I have an Ultrawide monitor and letter menus seem to be messed, plus I'd prefer a smaller game window. ALT-Enter does nothing

Sad times. Emuparadise should have made a point of removing only Nintendo Roms. Why should the community suffer completely for their draconian decision making. Nintendofail. Time to boycott.
Their priority should be sites that distribute Wii U, 3DS and Switch games. Downloading Zelda BOTW, Smash, Mario Kart, Pokemon or Samus Returns does far more financial damage than some 20+ year old NES or Gamecube game

I remember playing a DOS soccer game in the mid-90s where you picked animal team banners with animal characters, but can not find info.
There was also another old soccer game, top down perpective, where the match would be interrupted because a naked crasher would enter the field. Wish modern soccer games adopted this too!

Comparedto the bad arcade ports I had to play back then, emulation is not as bad

I've been a MAME user since Summer 1997. Congrats to them on their efforts and milestone even if I still use .106 in my cab.
I remember I had to use so many different emulators for every system back then. Now MAME has it all

Going out of your home, spending money on travel fare, a drink or snack and visiting the arcade was also part of the gaming experience

Hosting the files on your own server makes things even more difficult to avoid lawsuits. At least they'll reduce server costs.
But most of Wii ISOs were hosted on their forums in external sites like Mega.nz, they were password protected and required third party tools to decompress (PAR)

Disastrous for video games mostly and the way they are perceived. ET was a movie for the whole family after all. Bubble Bobble co-op play was made with couples in mind, according to the creator.
If you see various advertisements, not just videogames but hardware and software in general, during 80s and 90s,you'll notice a blatant sexism.
Now this is reduced to a degree because various voices that were muted or ignored during that era are now mostly heard and taken into account.
Except for online multiplayer games that are a minefield for everyone.

What disasterous consequences?

Other than the big crash in 1983, and recovery in the US after Nintendo introduced the NES, I don't see any major consequences. From my understanding, Nintendo did some demographic surveys and found that boys were playing their games more than girls, so it makes sense to market toward them.
I think you have marketing backwards. First you figure out who your audience IS, then you develop your marketing to target them, not the other way around.
I meant more from a social viewpoint. Gamergate and Feminist Frequency were the epitome.

Don't want to overstay my welcome on this topic, but another idea occurred to me. There may have been a slight generational "blip" between the first generation of video gamers and the second. By 1983-84 that first gen were becoming teenagers or were already into their teenage years. Back then there was a significant "nerd" stigma to video games and being a "nerd" at the time was considered a bad thing. As a result, a lot of kids likely abandoned video games. The industry just needed a new generation of kids to sell to, and they got it with the NES/Sega generation. The difference is those kids stuck to their guns and most of them are still playing video games to this day.
You have a point. Another thing to notice is that in the early 80s video game marketing did target the whole family, including both boys and girls. Even the computer tech industry had far more women as employees compared to today. After the crash majority of video game companies focused on boys and male teenagers for the most part, including even Nintendo. This had disastrous consequences from which video games struggle to recuperate even today.

I prefer Romcenter. Much easier to use. Saw ROM numbers twindle with each MAME version and never bothered. Had 17 year old ROM sets. Forgot they even existed. Now ROMs increased a few hundreds.

will play sonic mania on the pc when it comes out.
If they add 21:9+ aspect ratio like they did with Sonic CD, it will be a different game

Last time I visited a video games store, I was not impressed with video game covers either. Neither on consoles or computers
Unfortunately cover art does not have as much influence as in previous decades.
I mean regarding photorealistic covers, you see exactly the same figure as in the game, eg Far Cry 3 & 4
Since you mentioned mostly cartoon art there are few exceptions too. Also there are still differences between the Japanese and the International version in some games. Still saddening
compare this:
to this....a travesty
at least the Japanese version was closer to the original
Or this, resembling the classic cover in colors
to this
One cover I liked though was this. At least Nintendo are more considerate most of the times

I remember reaching world 8 for the first time in Super Mario 3. Without warpzones. Took me hours and hours.
One part was so frustrating that I jumped myself holding the controller up. Controller cable lifts the console, console falls down and resets. All the progress gone.I gaze at the TV for a while speechless, then I say "Dont mind, I'll play it next time".
I threw the controller only once, but it was in a 2 player match in NBA Live 95 (MS-DOS). I used to win by 20 points but in the end lost by 20 points.
I was frustrated with video games, but it usually ends pressing buttons furiously, never throwing the controller. But this hasnt happened for a few years now.

One game I regret not having played back then was The Battle of Olympus.
Would have enjoyed more than Zelda 2 probably.
Also Faxanadu comes to mind

are you installing the games on a hard drive other than C:\?
Some games have issues or dont run at all. Try moving or installing those games, including all source games, on the main hdd
-
Surprised Disney and Capcom did not send a C&D for the non-free Android version and Amazon has this game officially listed.
I'll try the PC version

GroovyMAME runs from CD or USB. For a reason since it ensures best possible display emulation and minimum input lag

there was also an issue with the ps1 version of umk3 I think. Or so I heard. That game, depending on what you did, could damage the console. They meant probably the disc lens.

Yeah, Jazz Jackrabbit 2 was a Windows 95/98 game. I thought it was funny that they abandoned the 3D bonus stages that they were so proud of in the first game, though.
too bad they abandoned the 3D third sequel too, Demo version looked promising.
The GBA spin-off was very average and had none of the features that made the DOS game a classic

the only thing worth in modern games will be Oculus Rift support. Till they make good use of that accessory, I'll be waiting.
Also if they improve artificial intelligents like in the game Facade
You'd have adventure game puzzles in real time!
Modern gaming industry is in a bubble that is ready to burst, both in computers and consoles. We'll might see a second video game crash soon. It is not a coincidence you abstain from modern games.
In the 90s video game industry was booming, despite having serious problems back then too.
New games I enjoyed the most were indeed the ones inspired by retro looks or mechanics.
Most notably : Faster than Light
It is a very hard game too. I havent finished it on normal yet.
Also Freedom Planet, inspired by old 2D platformers, was surprisingly much better than I expected.
Tried other platformers like Super Meat Boy and They Bleed Pixels. Never finished them after having lost hundreds of lifes. As you said, they're hard for the sake of being hard. They dont make you a better player. Gianna Sisters:Twisted Dreams was similar, prior to the patch at least. But its target audience were the hardcore computer platform gamers and a lot of those games were broken
In contrast, I beat A Walk in the Dark, that had a toned dowm difficulty, just like the older 80s-90s platformers.
Finished few months ago Bioshock Infinite, DLCs included. Felt exactly like you described! Felt like I was watching a movie, while been emerged in cheap gameplay. Unbelievable that this game cost millions to develop. An indie FPS could have achieved the same, if not better, results with 1/20 the price.
At least Bioshock 2, Minerva's Den included, made a better effort in balancing that sort of gameplay.
Regarding The Last of Us, I'd have said the same thing, but I recognize that this game is unique in story telling and pushing facial CGI animation to new and previously unseen levels. This in turn will have an effect on CGI animation in general, as the Last of Us animation director was an influence for many animators. But this was a game I didnt buy yet watched at my friend. With his PS3 he saved me lots of wasted money indeed.

Some 486 cases had a slow down button, to disable turbo mode in old dos games. Though this didnt always work. I'd suggest to get such a case, just in case.....
I'd opt for a 2x speed cd-rom. 4x speed and faster tend to skip first second of some FMV videos in some games, eg Harvester.
Also I'd suggest getting an old SVGA card that supports VESA resolutions. Newer cards had problems in MS-DOS and required the newest version of VESA to work and even then stability was not guaranteed.
Avoid also any soundblaster clones. Get a genuine Creative Labs. Preferable a Soundblaster AWE32 or 64, if you manage to fit it in the case.
Though I remember that a 486DX4/133 Mhz had the equivalent processing power of a Pentium 75 Mhz.

Regarding arcade ports on computers and consoles, I'd prefer any MAME emulated version over the original port. There are exceptions of course, but very few. Eg Primal Rage on Midway Arcade Classics on PC is better than in MAME, due to decryption issues
But I kinda miss the old arcade game monitors. Every arcade game had its unique color balance, refresh rate and temperature, which were engraved in my memory. Emulators destroy that feeling, since all games look the same on the same monitor.
That feeling cant be replicated. Every arcade machine was different, even if it featured the same game. Cant say the same for computers and consoles.

thanks. Whenever Atari gets mingled, this happens....
till later then
