recently finished Freedom Planet Takes the good elements of the classic 2D platformers, eg Sonic and SMB2 and improves them. Voice acting is very good too. Wish video sequences were longer in the end, but they'd go out of budget with the voice actors. overall one of the best platformers I played Replaying it again with the second character for different story sequences. Replaying Dust: an Elysian Tail on hard and on Ubuntu this time. Still nice game but voice acting second time doesnt sound so good. Also doing some training on fighters on Dreamcast (mainly SF2T:X). I wonder why people complained about the DC pad. Compared to the Logitech Rumblepad F710, DC pad is so much faster and easier.

Why didn't they make real arcade hardware for the home?
Petran79 replied to Keatah's topic in Classic Console Discussion
also the Sharp X68000 computer in Japan was used to develop CPS1 arcade games, hence CPS1 arcade ports were also very faithfull -
Classic Gaming: Better in 2014 or 1984?
Petran79 replied to VectorGamer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
oh sorry, didnt understand the question The thing is, the arcade operator connected LB2 on a real projector and so you could play the game on a huge screen! I didnt play it though. Not only would it be tiresome but it would introduce huge input lag. -
Classic Gaming: Better in 2014 or 1984?
Petran79 replied to VectorGamer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
arcades after 2000 (damned euro!) became too expensive. When they were cheap one could train there instead of buying the uber-expensive and inferior console version. But afterwards one could buy the equal console version cheap, train and beat the arcade with as few coins as possible. This killed arcades Last time i saw an arcade game on a projector wast the last blade 2 in 2000. -
Do you like any sports games?
Petran79 replied to xDragonWarrior's topic in Modern Console Discussion
the modern sports games are more like sports simulators. Hence I dont like them as much. every once in a while you have to press pause, adjust strategies, change system, player matchups etc hence I havent devoted much time to the new FIFA, NBA or Pro Evolution Soccer franchises. they require so much training and have so sensitive control mechanisms that it becomes more of a grinding chore rather than a retro sports title that is fun to play. also the fact that now they focus more on realistic models and stadiums, makes it more interesting to watch a match on TV than actually play it. -
I can't tell modern games apart anymore
Petran79 replied to Gabriel's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I remember at that time having watched a demo play of Dragon's Lair on TV, in the mid-80s. I was amazed at the graphics and sound, still this did not deter me from playing all the old Atari games. Also at that time game manuals and boxes had quite a lot of illustrations, to cover up for the lack of expression in pixels Today where game narrative has progressed somehow in all genres, even 8-bit pixel art games are able to tell a good story and show characters. hence imagination in the latter sense is not necessary anymore. -
there is another solution: what is this, a wireless console called Wiii? (chinese Wii rip-off). Only 20 Euro? With pre-installed sports games? I'll get you that instead. (kid is excited thinking he/she'll enter the imaginary world of Mario seen in advertisements and internet videos.....only to be hugely dissapointed later on.....) Where I live it is already happening. Parents destroy the poor kids gaming culture that way. but they have some points. Even the original NintendoDS costs 155 Euro here! I was lucky to get one for free when a kid forgot it at a bus station in the countryside.

Good games based on comics or graphic novels?
Petran79 replied to ham's topic in Modern Console Discussion
you mean new games? best game ever: Druuna - Morvus Gravis censored unfortunately. in the comic she was naked! Also Diabolik: The Original Sin is decent and multiplatform. XIII is a nice FPS too. Quaternia is a video game borrowing concepts from Moebius' Major Fatal and The Airtight Garage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgywJwC1DlU regarding older games, I'd mention Samurai Warrior http://hardcoregaming101.net/usagiyojimbo/usagiyojimbo.htm also quite a few Japanese games are based on comics if you are interested (eg Berserk which is better than God of War). Also various Capcom fighters using the Marvel characters. MK vs DC Universe though is not that good. Asterix games are also decent, though my favourite remains the Konami arcade. -

where have I seen this before.... http://www.allowe.com/Larry/DeveloperLookback.htm In 1998 Sierra was sold to Vivendi, and by now nearly all of the original creative teams were either fired, dissolved or had already moved on to better things. The new Sierra later released a few more sequels to their popular franchises, but fans generally agreed that these games were rushed jobs which showed little passion on behalf of the developers. By this time, the industry’s attention had shifted to consoles and 3D gaming, and with a marked decrease in both the quality and quantity of Sierra’s titles, fans had to face the reality that the adventure game’s Golden Age was over. Vivendi owns the word Sierra and the brand and all the assets of the company,” says a noticeably more somber Lowe, “but as for the employees, they have all scattered to the winds. With software companies, it’s all about the intellectual properly, the creative ownership – the intelligence. When you take away all those people, all you’ve got is the word ‘Sierra’ and the words ‘Leisure Suit Larry’. [Magna Cum Laude] wasn’t a good game. You can try making it into good a game, but it won’t work - not even if you try your hardest, not even if you spend millions of dollars. Magna Cum Laude proved that. That’s because all the original people are gone. The company went into a death spiral when everybody left. With the accounting irregularities, then the selling of the name, it was just a terrible mess. As for a real company of people answering phones by saying ‘Hi, we are Sierra,’ that stopped on August 27th 2004.”

it also does matter that arcades are gone and arcade sticks, motion controls, wheels and flight sticks became cheaper and found their way to consoles. in the 90s arcade and console gap was bridged in hardware, but this decade it was bridged in controls as well. It wasnt fun at all being expert at a console port of an arcade game with a pad or keyboard, then visiting the arcade original and realizing that you suck at this game due to the controls. Eg I could finish Mortal Kombat games on PC without trouble, yet on the arcades I sucked due to the controls. Of course arcades had also better graphics and more frames, hence the greater difficulty

The vast majority of game controllers cater to the thumb generation. While for cell phone games and portable consoles they are justified, regarding desktop consoles at least, things should start to change. motion controls have certainly their issues, but Dual Shock controllers that dominate for 15 years need also to change sometime. Why being forced to use the thumbs, when all fingers and also the wrists should be used for gaming. Thumbs in mobile gaming and cell phones, thumbs in portable consoles, thumbs in desktop consoles, thumbs on PC if you use a gamepad! Cheap arcade sticks are certainly a breakthrough! because with arcades gone long ago or very expensive, most people are not familiar, even though they are more comfortable than a gamepad. I too grew with the NES and Gameboy but when I moved to PC gaming, keyboard and mouse required more engagement. I'd have issues had I just used a Dual Shock controller. For fighters I use a stick, for platformers a pad (due to NES and Gameboy), for FPS a keyboard and mouse, for flight sims a flight stick and for racing games a wheel. I use keyboard also if there is no other alternative. Games certainly change, but habits not so....

I havent bought a mobile phone since I am content with what I have for 3.5 years. But when I see the capabilities of the new phones for games, I think they will take over. If anyone wants to play for 10-15 minutes, those type of games will have the advantage. In previous decades we had the arcades for this sort of play. Also the times when you had long gaming sessions or played a game for months are over. hence the rise of mobile phone and mobile console gaming.Kids will be content with Nintendo DS, adults with mobile phone games. Desktop consoles and computers will be pushed further to evening sessions. games have not changed that much, but since more adults play games now, the habits changed considerably.

NES to SNES: It's too early for new hardware
Petran79 replied to Gabriel's topic in Classic Console Discussion
ironic also that the adult NES game "Sweet Home", the pre-cursor of Resident Evil, was never released outside Japan. For me it ranks among the top 5 NES games and certainly it has the best atmosphere. Also Clock Tower, another good horror SNES game was never released outside Japan either We should be happy that Maniac Mansion had an NES release, even with the edited hamster scene -
NES to SNES: It's too early for new hardware
Petran79 replied to Gabriel's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Same reason my dad got us an Atari2600 and later an NES without even asking! Later he got me a Gameboy for my birthday. A pleasant surprise. When I asked him later why he didnt buy us an Amiga 500 instead, he said it was too expensive. But at least there we could have copied the floppy disks from friends, like everyone was doing, instead of buying expensive games! So I run over at a teen guy who had an Amiga 2000 in order to experience some real and mature games and also decent arcade ports in 16-bit awesomeness. And today people are complaining about PS3 and Xbox graphics, even if they are so cheap in price. also one has to keep in mind that at that time you had to pay mostly in cash and not by credit card or monthly installments. So this made those goods more expensive. Also recycling wasnt so advanced and wide-spread as today in most countries. using recycled products or recycling-friendly materials also plays a role in deterioration. I remember the SNES being the most popular console at that time. I knew from magazines also about the Neo Geo and later about the Atari Jaguar and 3DO, but most shops wouldnt have them at all.so there was no choice but to buy a MegaDrive and its variations or a SNES. When microcomputers like Amiga were slowly being replaced by IBM PCs and MS-DOS gaming became dominant, there wasnt any choice either. today we know so much, yet regarding choices things are even worse! -
Ever get depress while playing video games?
Petran79 replied to fdurso224's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I get depressed because I remember playing those games, mostly Atari 2600, NES and Amiga classics with my brother or friends and acquaintances. Also MS-DOS games till they were abandoned in the late 90s. Even watching them or being watched by others when playing solo also meant something. But playing alone, really those games lose their charm a lot. I remember playing most games with my brother together and he was watching me or vice versa, I also didnt enjoy arcades when I went playing alone. With friends it was the best. Online play tries to mend some things, but really nothing makes up for the absence of a person near you. Only perhaps if there is both a game window and a video conferencing video on the same screen when you can watch the opponent live. I played like that with my brother on GGPO. -
Oddly.. Zelda 2 is one of my favorite video games of ALL TIME. I still play it maybe once very year or two.. usually just to level up to Level 5 across the board before finishing the first dungeon. Here's a tip.. don't put in the crystals at the statue at the end by JUMPING over the middle of it. This allows you to milk experience points by going through the dungeon again (i.e. the 1st one) and save the crystal to when you really need it.. to get 9000+ points instantly for the higher levels I remember I could beat it even with attack and magic at 7 and life at 8. if you play the game normally without grinding you'll usually end up with those numbers in the last palace. Magic has to be at 7 in order to cast the thunder spell in the last boss, or else it is not possible, And even then you only have space for the "Jump" or "Shield" magic that can help a lot.

an anime called "Arcade Gamer Fubuki". it is awful though but at it is about video games.

Women Underrepresented in Video Games?
Petran79 replied to godslabrat's topic in Modern Console Discussion
there is the case of Muriel Tramis, the so called "Roberta Williams of France", who developed three erotic games for computers, Emmanuell, Geisha and Fashination. http://members.chell...ames/tramis.htm Jungle Jill too. much better than Commander Keen. -
I am a Poor Excuse for a Modern Gamer
Petran79 replied to StanJr's topic in Modern Console Discussion
thanks, I'll check this out to continue the game. but i stopped playing more because it had a good presentation but nothing to keep me motivated. plus I was never a Batman fan -
It must have been some Gameboy games in the early 90s. TMNT, Wizards and Warriors, Gremlins, Tiny Toon Adventures, Gargoyle's Quest etc Because GB games were very expensive at that time Havent rented since, except some PC titles which could be easily copied btw

I am a Poor Excuse for a Modern Gamer
Petran79 replied to StanJr's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I understand your frustration. I played the game and reached the point where some thugs are holding hostage a doctor. Now if I try to break in they shoot the doctor immediately and I have to restart. Even if I plant explosive gell at the entrance behind and knock off some of them, the one pointing the gun shoots before I have time to react. Havent played the game since.... still much easier than the Batmans of the early 90s. atmosphere is there but if I want real atmosphere I'd better read the comics. I want MAINLY to play a game..... also now I suck playing fighters and fps with a gamepad. never really got used to it. For platformers and sports games it is ok
