games that will stand the test of time....
Petran79 replied to xg4bx's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Perhaps the secret is 'the less you know, the better'. Eg i remember we praised the snes for some of the hardware capabilities . But first and mostly we praised it for the games. We never said 'the snes needs stronger cpu, more ram, disk space etc' to have better games. Now the xbox 360 and the ps3 lack in ram and graphics and games look crap... The move from 8 bit to 16 bit was a milestone in games. Addition of cdrom storage was important too. But the switch to 3d... I dont know. 2 decades have almost passed, yet games have only progressed in resolution and graphic fx while they play mostly the same. That explains why a lot of players go back to the roots or take a break from new games once in a while. -
I remember at an electronics store i gazed at a demonstration of karateka with the beautiful sunset. Still much better demo than all the flashy post sf2 fighters.

I have around 40 bought cdrom pc games which is ok for a period of 15 years. Some old directx games do not run at all on xp (eg xwing vs tie fighter) For atari 2600, Dreamcast and Nes 15 games were normal too. On gameboy i had 5 games because there was a rental store nearby A non-collector buys 5 popular games a year or rents games. 1 game for 1 month (excluding summer) is the average. The game has to be good. 60 euro are a lot

games that will stand the test of time....

That is valid now when the internet makes information much easier and we only have 3 companies trying to secure a mass audience But 20 years ago that was not the case. There were cases where an atari 2600 or nes player could never have heard of the amiga or atarist. Differences between systems were wider than today. Sega, especially with the megacd, appealed to more mature players. Games were games but even though i liked the nes, i realized while visiting friends who had amigas and atarists that there was already another more exciting gaming world taking shape. But you had to have some knowledge to access it. The nes did not require that. You did not need to be a teen to play. Or else a teen had to setup the game for you -
Ghost busters 2 was very frustrating, especially the control Waxworks. I try any of the 4 stages and i either die from traps and enemies or am lost in the mazes. I gave up Weird Dreams. One wrong move and you are dead. I never finished it. Mike the Magic Dragon. Always wrong password! Warlocks Quest.creepy platformer yet too hard. #1 frustration game prize goes to Fiendish Freddy. So fun yet so difficult and i want to beat that midget clown to death, though in the end he gets what he deserves
-
I tried gradius 5 too but this game is for hardcore players. If i get a migrane every time i manage to finish a stage, it is not worth to add another burden to my worries. I suck mainly at games that require quick reflexes and quick button and joystick mashers. In fps i cant last 1 minute. Not that i cant get better, it is just a huge strain to me. Last time i did it was with the dreamcast in my 20s when i was a student. Now my performance dropped a lot.

One thing i did not know was that amiga 3000 had a game titled 'eat a bug' that supported a motion tracking controller similar to kinect, as did sega's megadrive activator controller. Amazing how something can be innovative yet unknown if it does not target casual gamers like the wii

Is the GBA/DS king of 2D platformers.
Petran79 replied to ATARI7800fan's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Regarding the gba I was dissapointed with the gba sequel of jazz jackrabbit, since the pc original was much better. But it came too late, after the cancelled 3d sequel and when the fanbase was reduced a lot. I was never really into platformers, fighters or space shooters for handhelds. Games there should be more static, involving strategy, like rpg and puzzle games. What is the use of being frustrated due to the lousy controls and screen, when you can excel and perform the same moves much easier on a big screen and a normal joystick/keyboard? -
This occurs with a lot of ps3 games. Eg Dead Space is very tiring to play on an scart tv due to this. As if sony and publishers said: either buy a digital hd tv or screw you

games that will stand the test of time....
Petran79 replied to xg4bx's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Yes, no matter the polishing and 3d , mario, link, samus and co still look like they came from straight from the 80s. Same goes for sonic too, even if he is orphaned for the time being. But so did final fantasy, metal gear, megaman etc Sadly for nintendo a lot of franchises like square enix, capcom and konami jumped on the sony bandwagon. The irony is that it is exactly those franchises that adapted better to the changes in every era. Nintendo, being the older player, has established a huge fanbase anyway. Every console has and had her own myths and reality. I am sure if sega makes a console again a lot of xbox and ps players will switch sides -

It is just because Nintendo are renewing their franchises that those characters still sell. Sony and Microsoft may have had exclusives but they never really had a game character as trademark. They just used characters of other companies, most notably Sega's. That is what i call souless systems. But it more has to do with keeping in touch with the generation of every era. Eg those kids who were introduced to nes zelda moved to snes and nintendo 64 zeldas, assuming one kid starts playing from 8 till he/she turns 20 at most. Those born after 1990 that were introduced to ocarina of time have still an interest in the new games. You have to satisfy the new players, while keeping older players satisfied. Nintendo did that best. -
So does it feel like a polished MK4 in gameplay? The point of mk was splatter, violence and fun with the wooden moves of the digitized actors. Adding so much detail spoils the fun. I felt that when i played mk4 for the first time and after spending some time on it never bothered again with any mk game. Too bad this gets not an arcade port or pc port.

Since i like Pinball games, i recently played the pc version of TimeShock Pinball. It supports up to 1600x1200 resolution and looks much better than the Dreamcast version. Since such a perfect pinball simulation will probably never happen again, that game along with the other two tables should be remembered, though it is not that popular. -
EA ceases production of game manuals
Petran79 replied to cimerians's topic in Modern Console Discussion
My favourite manual was that of Flying Corps. Except maps and manual it also included a book called "Practical Flying - Complete Course of Flying Instruction", written in 1918 by a flight commander. 270 pages with illustrations, detailed guide and even leaflet advertisements of aeroplane equipment in the end. I was astounded. I had to drop the box because it did not last long but the manuals remain. today no game developer would include so many extras except in expensive special editions. As for console game manuals.....they get worse and worse. -
i think ive figured out todays average gamer....
Petran79 replied to xg4bx's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Yes, we were ecstatic when in Lakers and Celtics you could control an Abdul Jabbar sprite who was the only player with the unblockable reverse hook. Or be appeased with Sensible Soccer database. Or with imaginary teams and players. While now we are spoiled since we can even admire the player's sweat drops.... it is the player's and team's licenses that cost mostly. basically they are renewing those rather than the game engine. But fortunately now there are custom built mods and stats for sports games that are updated and give extra life to the game. -
Who was stuck with an unpopular console as a kid?
Petran79 replied to mbd30's topic in Classic Console Discussion
3do, jaguar and saturn were popular but they lacked games and were expensive. I bought a used dreamcast in 2003 and a dozen classic games, from cheap to expensive. At that time my friend bought a ps2 but there were not that many good games for it till after 2005. I kept my dc till today, he sold the ps2 and the games for a ps3, which he later gave to another friend due to dissapointment (mgs4 was crap, no split screen in killzone 2, lack of good games etc) -
The last good console generation...
Petran79 replied to Koopa64's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I forgot to add: One experienced gamer mentioned that every player is marked by the games he first started playing and his opinion is shaped by this. He had started with text adventures in the 80s. I vote the older generation till 1985 taking into account economic and social factors, rather than the change in video games per se and my personal preferences. Because i know that had i a ps3 or xbox 360 as a kid i would be in ecstasy. As an adult i felt i played all this before, even without 3d and hd -
Well 8 years ago in a shop a kid wanted to buy gta for ps2 and i pretended to be his older cousin so that he could get it. Not because i like the game (never played it) but because i am against age ratings in any media, with the exception of hard porn.

Since a lot of kids have the tendency to forget or lose their ds portable, i hope nintendo at least incorporates some online track feature Because my ds was forgotten by a kid as well. The little rascal had some pantie shots taken with the ds!

When i was young my poor brother was the victim of my frustration with the nes. This occured 3-4 times and we will never forget them. Back on topic. Give me a game with fluffy animals, from jazz jackrabbit to tails the fox and i am a happy man. Games like new zeeland story and bobble bobble and puzzle bobble series were my favourites back then and remain even today. The robots in machinarium were also likeable. Also aero the acrobat etc.

The last good console generation...
Petran79 replied to Koopa64's topic in Modern Console Discussion
One important factor that defines whether I will like a console are arcade games. Remember you can not sit at home the whole day playing games, you have to get out and...play arcade games too. There was a 10 year gap where i did not own any console at all, yet visited the arcades for fun. Till the 5th generation arcades were ok, but after the 6th generation when arcades became console ports and far fewer i felt something was missing. Now online console play totally substituted arcade games. While i'd like to choose 6th generation too since i enjoyed ps2 and dreamcast, the golden age, objectively speaking and admitted by most video game historians, is till 1985 -
do exclusive titles really matter that much?
Petran79 replied to xg4bx's topic in Modern Console Discussion
You have also to consider that a lot of games were limited only to Japan and only thanks to the internet are those games getting popular and we are seeing a worldwide release. So this gives Sony and Nintendo an advantage. Xbox fares not that well in Japan I heard. But there are also the localization and translation expenses. Also not every company wants their title exported. The only multiplatform titles are usually the popular ones, developed by western companies. But windows games have also their own exclusives that vary accordingly. The golden age of consoles is over anyway so you can not expect that much variety. It is unfortunate that it is very hard to fansub a japanese psx iso for example. -
Games you have never beaten
Petran79 replied to toptenmaterial's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Smb 1 is actually much harder than 2 and 3. But the last world of smb3 is the most difficult of all, though the end boss is a joke. I did not know the flute warp trick and it took me 6 hours to finish the game. Smb2 was the easiest of all. Zelda 2 became harder and better from the 5th palace onward Another game impossible to finish was warlocks quest on the amiga. I managed to finish it with difficulty through emulation and save states -

My friend managed to finish castlevania and zelda 1, something i could not (death and ganon were hard). Yet he could not finish tmnt on technodrome, something i did. I was also stuck in the parrot riddle in star tropics. Other games i gave up were the horrorsoft games, thunderscape, new horizons, pray for death, cyber gladiators etc
