  1. I'll second Mala, I've used it before and it works pretty well. Making your own skins isn't very hard either. It is indeed abandoned development-wise at this point, but it works well enough that it isn't an issue.

  2. Hey everyone, i'm new to the arcade thread here.

I'm looking to buy a cabinet for my game room, and am very interested in the multi game systems.

I found a couple on craigslist, but not sure about the price.

See the Mario Bros cabinet here - has 2 boards with over 600 games each. My guess is that they are jamma boards???

He's asking $1600 for the working cab with both boards of Roms.

What do you think?? Worth the price? Or should i find and old cabinet and DIY one with a Jamma kit?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

To be honest $1600 strikes me as a lot for that cab. You could build one yourself for way cheaper, if you have the woodworking equipment and the chops for it. Turning an old cab into a multi-cade can be more work that it's worth, especially if it needs repairs and whatnot.

I highly recommend checking out the Build Your Own Arcade forums and seeing what the guys do there.

If you want to make it even simpler, just get an IKEA-esque flatpack arcade cab from a company and assemble it yourself. These guys are in Canada, but they ship worldwide: http://gameroomdesigns.ca/shop/full-size-cabinet-kit/full-size-arcade-cabinet/

It's only $375 to get a flat-pack full-size cab with a pre-cut control panel. You just need to get the controls together, a JAMMA if you go that route, and a screen. You can buy all that stuff from that shop, if it makes it simpler. Assemble it and you can have a brand-new CNC-cut machine for less than a thousand bucks. I'm not associated with them at all, I've just heard good things about their work. If you look in their gallery you can see what their customers have assembled: http://gameroomdesigns.ca/photo-gallery/

I would highly recommend looking into a DIY or semi-DIY option, Craigslist sellers are notoriously skeezy in the arcade world and $1600 is simply too much for that cab he is selling. Also be warned, those "xxx in 1" JAMMA boards are nearly universally shit. Poor emulation, glitches, crap control response, lame sound, and zero support are pretty par for the course. I would recommend either doing the ArcadeSD: http://www.phoenixarcade.com/ArcadeSD.htmor building a MAME PC.

The downside of the ArcadeSD is that it is quite pricey, somewhere around $350, but is supposedly easy to use. Doing a MAME PC is cheaper for sure, as hardware requirements aren't that high for running most older games and you get the benefit of also being able to run console games if you'd like as well. Downside is it can be a bit of a bear to get setup, but like anything the cheaper way is often the more time-consuming way. There's such a large community surrounding MAME that you will find help if you need it.

Ultimately the choice is yours, but you can do a cab cheaper and better if you're willing to put some time in.

EDIT: Here's a couple videos that might help you out:

  3.

Nice list.....same here, a few weeks back some little shits spread them around our block.

Yeah, why some people are such shitbirds escapes me. Buggers.

That'll keep you rocking for quite awhile; enjoy!

Thanks again for the great write-up, your post helped me immensely in finding games for a system that hasn't really been my wheelhouse. I'm looking forward to digging into this system a lot!

Unfortunately our car got a punctured tire last night because some assholes scattered nails all around town as a 'prank' a few weeks ago and not all of them got cleaned up. So I had to replace that which means there's not much moolah left this month for gaming.

  5. In my time I've put hundreds of hours into the GBA SP and the DSLite, and I found I prefer the Lite for GBA games mostly because it fits my hands better. I have a GBA SP and it's great, but with how narrow it is my hands can get cramped over extended play sessions. I also like the brightness of the Lite's screen, it's easier on my eyes than the SP's I find.

That being said if you're in the USA you should be able to find a GBA SP AGS-101 for peanuts, so it's worth grabbing one anyway. I had a sweet Onyx one that I sold to a member here, leaving myself the AGS-001. Even though I play GBA games on my DS, I still kind of kick myself for selling that one.

EDIT: Dammit, I didn't notice this thread was a year old. I thought some of the responses here sounded vaguely familiar.

  6. Got a free PS2 from one of my co-workers today, but it has no games. I must admit I have always been more of a PC/Nintendo gamer, so the world of Playstation is mostly foreign to me. Beyond some of the obvious greats like God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, Gran Turismo, Katamari Damacy, etc, I am unaware of a lot of the great PS2 games out there. So, I'm wondering what are some of your favourites and recommendations? Where is a good place to start for a newcomer to this strange new land?

  7. I tried the Pre-Alpha demo out a few days ago and tried it again today seeing this thread- I was and still am stuck looking at the ground spinning in circles after starting the game, so I didn't exactly get to play the game. I will say though, I had a good bit of fun with the original two games - if I can get the stupid thing to work right and I like it, I may think about backing the kickstarter.

Don't know if this may be the trouble you're having, but I have run into some games not liking a controller plugged in. There were a couple games in the past where I had that issue, unplugged my controller and the issue went away. Of course it may not be the issue you are having, just a thought though.

  8. PGS, sheesh. Their real-life prototype looks like a phone stuck into the bottom half of a 3DS shell. Not amazing. The tech is feasible, even at the low price they're quoting, but they don't look like the team to make it. I would buy a finished handheld with those specs from an established company, though. I expect it's coming.

But... they have pictures of a multimeter and circuit boards, surely they must be legit!

  9. The surprising part is that both companies sound like they ran by the same person, both didn't pay employees 4 years (Infinity Ward) and then automatically re-titled their laughable sequel(s) which are basically the same game

Then both companies probably either used default game asset models of current guns that typically open source and free and did very minor changes or used Maya with real reference images and just traced the guns and altered their looks later

    The truth is out there...

  10. Oh, I've seen my fair share. Mostly on Kijiji (Canadian Craigslist). I live rural, the local thrift shop never has anything much in the way of gaming. But here's some highlights, all from the same person on the classifieds:

Gameboy Advance, just the handheld and nothing else: $150

Super Mario World for the SNES: $200 ("SUPER RARE". Go $%^& yourself, seller.)

Atari 2600 with some commons and 2 joysticks: $450 ("VINTAGE AND RARE". May your crotch be infested with angry hornets.)

Xbox 360, Slim edition with the 120gb drive and nothing else: $250 (What the hell are you smoking, you dim-witted lump of coal.)

And finally, my personal favourite from that same lunatic:

PS1 with 2 bullshit sports games and 2 controllers: $200 (I hope that PS1 spontaneously combusts in your hands.)

  11. Since I don't keep up with news at all I'm probably behind on this, but I found out through the Metal Jesus channel:

You drop your smartphone into it and then plug in GB or GBC cartridges and play them on your phone with the physical controls. Android only, which is a bummer but it's the fault of Apple and their arbitrary, draconian app-store restrictions.

Not 100% sure how I feel about it, part of me thinks it looks really cool especially since I'm a big Nintendo hand-held fan. On the other hand, depending on the price I wonder how many people would buy this as opposed to a GBA SP? Maybe for people who want to casually play some of the games from their yesteryears, but then I wonder if they'd bother with even trying to find carts. Currently the development kit is on sale for $60, not sure what the final retail price will be.
