  1. I'm planning on building a MAME cab, and I already know that I don't want an endless list of thousands of games that aren't really worth playing anyway. So I thought I would get your guys favorite arcade games and start to build my game-list from there. I didn't grow up in the glory days of arcades, so much of my experience with arcade games comes from ports. As such, I have some personal favorites such as Galaga, Asteroids, Centipede, Street Fighter II, Pole Position (I know, not fun to play without a wheel). But beyond those I'm ignorant of many of the great games, so I was hoping those with more experience than myself could give me their favorites so I have an idea of where to start. Cheers! -TPA5
  2. The machine itself looks kind of neat, but the weird 4-way stick setup they have in the middle looks stupid. For the kind of cash they're asking, they should have simply chosen sticks that were 4/8-way switchable. Despite what many say, the RPi2 is gutsy enough to run most of the older games without trouble. That being said, I'm still not sure why one would want to mount it on the wall. While the makers claim it saves space, what is something realistically going to be able to put under that cab? A tiny shelf, a little storage, ultimately not much. Why not then just make the cab a free-standing cab and people won't have to futz with mounting it on the wall. It is shaped attractively, it has that "Ikea" look to it (which is a compliment), so if you like that style it will appeal. What aggravates me is that the control panel looks very ugly with the stick in the middle. Ultimately the price is the biggest sticking point in my mind (and the point that pisses me off the most). $1250 (early-bird backer price) for this is not worth it, not in a million years. Especially since post-Kickstarter they're expecting to command $2000 blessed dollars a unit. That's in "holy shit" territory. If I would guess at a rough cost breakdown (And I might be off-base with some of these, so bear with me): Wood: $60 (This is based on Canadian prices, so they may get better deals) Paint: $15 Fasteners: $10 Controls: $50 (I bet they'll get better pricing than that, especially since it appears to be inexpensive sticks) RPi2: $40 (They might get volume discount on this) Wiring: $10 Screen: $140 (I've even seen them for less, plus possible volume discounts again) So for raw-materials you're looking at (roughly of course) about $325. I know the cost of labor and production is in there, but there is not a chance it costs them anywhere near the almost $1700 they stand to make on each unit. Since these will be CnC'd (I assume) and slapped together in short order I cannot fathom production costing very much. That they expect to charge $2k for these at standard retail is insulting. If you took that 2 grand and built cabs you could make freaking several full-size units if you were budget-conscious, or simply make one unbelievable full-size cab. These projects just strike me as predatory and greedy, as opposed to a passion-project from a team who genuinely cares about arcade games.
  3. Thanks mate, I wanted to give my fellow forum-goers a shot at getting a setup for less then they may see on eBay.
  4. Sold, will update post later with another Game Boy Advance SP lot. Thanks! If you're looking for feedback on some deals I have done here, you can check HERE. Some of my personal rules for selling: If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to post a reply or PM me. I work on a first-come-first-serve for selling, so the first to PM me gets first dibs on it, and so on. If you PM me with a question or interest in purchasing and I reply, then you do not reply to me within 2 days, I will offer it to the next person in-line. This is so I don't get hung-up waiting for people who ultimately decline to purchase it. I accept PayPal only. I am not interested in trades. I will be courteous and polite to you, and make every effort on my end to ensure the sale goes smoothly and worry-free for you. Thank you very much for taking a look!
  5. Top 5 would probably be: 1. Oblivion [PC] (Easily into the 300+ hours) 2. Metroid Prime [GC] (Very close to 200 hours, multiple playthroughs) 3. Skyrim [360, PC] (Getting close to the 200 hour mark on this one too) 4. The Legend of Zelda series [GBC, GBA, GC] (Well over 300 hours, but since it's multiple games it's not technically at the top) 5. Animal Crossing [GC] (Probably darn near 150-200 hours. Played my first village for about 4 years before the file corrupted) I tend to play games in bursts, and more in winter than in summer.
  6. I liked the first and second ones (never played the third), hopefully the 4th retains the arcade-feel and doesn't fall into trying to make it realistic.
  7. That's really neat, I love things like this. Even reading the run-of-the-mill stuff that would be boring in the moment seems interesting now.
  8. There's nothing like that in the province (yep, whole province) where I live. But if there was and it was close enough, my friends and I would probably be down there a handful of times a month. This coming January I'm going to have another poke and putting together a MAME machine so I can get my arcade fix at home.
  9. I think it also simply wasn't as good as other games. I've tried it a few times on MAME, and it wasn't really interesting unless maybe someone is a hard core Journey fan. That being said, the Journey cabs had a neat cassette-system that would play a song when you got to the bonus stage (or last stage, I can't recall right now). So basically the cassette was on an infinite loop and it would also occasionally play a few seconds of the song in attract mode provided the operator had it setup to do that. The colours were nice and bright and the graphics weren't even too bad so it wasn't a bad machine technically speaking, it just ultimately wasn't a great game. The artwork for the cab is kind of cool though.
  10. What kind of project are you trying to put together with those, hmm? Joking aside, that's going to be a pretty tricky buy. Not many of them will have made it into the hands of collectors, and those that did could be difficult to find. Not to mention the fact that they probably haven't been run in awhile, so they may need work done. A good place to start may be trying to find nearby cities that have currently or had at one time Chuck E. Cheeses, and posting "want" ads on the local Craigslist. Maybe you'll find someone who managed to scoop some.
  11. I am wanting RL to be my next game purchase, when I do I'd be down to be in a league with some other folks here. I don't know how often I could play but it would be more fun to know some people in the game.
  12. The size is definitely the downside of the SP. One of the greatest handheld consoles in my opinion, but now that I have adult-sized hands it doesn't cut it for me. That's a big reason I prefer playing GBA games on the DS lite, my hands have a lot more room to move around.
  13. The original Atari 400 truly did have a terrible keyboard. I'm eternally thankful the previous owner of the 400 I currently own installed the 800 keyboard. When I was a kid, the 400 my dad had setup in my room was cursed with the membrane keyboard, and I certainly recall the pain of trying to type away on that weird surface.
  14. Old post I know, but I spent many hundreds of hours on the 001 when it came out and I loved it. Now, years later, a friend passed along his 001 to me since he recently picked up a 101. After seeing the side-by-side, I'll admit the screen on the 101 is a little nicer yes, but there isn't such a world of difference that nations will slide into the sea if someone plays a 001 over a 101. As for me, while I love playing on original hardware, I find I much prefer playing Gameboy games from all generations on my DS Lite. The larger device feels nicer in my hands and with the flash cart I have I can take quite a few games with me without having to physically haul around a pile of carts.
  15. I bought Skyrim on release day for the 360 because I love the Elder Scrolls series, then I later bought it for PC. Maybe I'm just the luckiest guy, but I never came across any of the bugs other people were struck with. I've never liked the Fallout games as much, primarily because I prefer to be immersed in a gameworld that looks better than the one I live in, not more depressing. That being said, the Fallout series has produced unique gameplay and pretty excellent adventures. Fallout 3 I enjoyed after I installed some mods to clear up the bland colour palette and added some foliage (along with gameplay and texture improvements). I was initially looking forward to Fallout 4, even though I knew that as with most Bethesda games the first few months would have bugs and such. After watching my brother play it for awhile, I must admit I am underwhelmed. No karma system, weird changes to how skills work, your character suddenly has a voice, and perhaps the worst sin of all: it feels Bethesda cut story and quest content in favour of foisting the settlement aspect of the game on players. Again, I have never been one to run to the Fallout series with open arms but I still generally enjoyed them. Once Fallout 4 comes down in price and the modding community has really had a chance to take-off, I'll definitely be giving it a try. Until then, I have many other games demanding my attention.
  16. My brother bought the game, and we spent some time playing it the other day. All I can say is I'm pretty bummed out that I waited 10 years for a sequel to Battlefront 2, and what I got was an anorexic version of Battlefield with Star Wars skin on. No space battles, no campaign, no galactic conquest, not a great selection of maps, boring game modes (Hunt on the Hoth map from Battlefront 2 is some of the most insane fun you can have split-screen), no ability to have tons of players on a map creating an epic-feeling battle... it's honestly almost insulting. Yet another throw-away game engineered for the Call of Duty generation who can only stay focused on something if they can create "hilarious" lets-plays of them overreacting, swearing, or "MLG-ing" it up with totally rad montages bro. Of course I'm sure the DLC will be pouring forth from the excrement-crusted bowels of EA's studios soon enough, allowing you to actually have the gameplay that should have been in the blessed game in the first place for a moderate fee. I guess that's what makes money these days, but it certainly will not be convincing me to open my my wallet and let them have a single penny of my hard-earned money. What a load of refuse. (Yes I am bitter about this.)
  17. Well you admitted you were wrong, which is better than most people so I'd say you're doing pretty good.
  18. Well, DeSmuME is (like many emulators) very CPU-intensive. That being said, one would assume a recent quad-core shouldn't have too many problems. Are you getting slowdown at specific times in game, or is it random? Also, when playing do you have the laptop plugged in and on a well-ventilated surface? Finally, when using the emulator do you have other processes and programs running in the background?
  19. I do want to play F4, but (as I have already whined about in other threads) $80 for a new-release game is brutal, especially for a digital copy.
  20. Really, one could just print out their own labels and stick them on those glass coca cola bottles. I've thought about doing it a few times but I never get around to it.
  21. My buddy kept going on about it when it first came out, but I never got around to picking it up. I wouldn't mind getting a copy, but I've made a pact with myself that I won't buy any more PC games until I finish at least 75% of the ones I currently own.
  22. You're welcome, hope you enjoy it!
  23. The code will be in your PM box. Enjoy!
  24. The Good Old Games Fall sale is here, which means I'm spending too much money on games I don't have time to play. But that's beside the point. One of the rewards I unlocked for spending money is a free copy of System Shock 2, but I already own the game. So! The first person to reply to this post will get the code for the game in a PM. Please only reply if you want to play the game and don't own it already, I'd like the code to go to someone who will enjoy it.
