Sorry I was in a hurry yesterday and didn't really clarify myself. The internet wasn't "down" in the dictionary definition of the term, the speed was very, very slow. I'm just used to calling it "down" because when its slow that's how my wife and I refer to it. So it knew there was an update, I just couldn't download it in a reasonable time frame.

Interview with GameGavel.com's Mike Kennedy
TPA5 replied to VectorGamer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Interesting interview, very in-depth. I'm impressed at the passion he has for GG, he didn't start it in order to try to squeeze money from it, or get it big enough to sell to another company and take a payday. Although I am going to have to join in some of the other voices, white text on black background is hard even on my young eyes. I ended up copying the article and pasting it into Word so I could read it easier. Not knocking your work, but maybe a new theme for your website could help readability? -
The incredible story of the first PC, from 1965
TPA5 replied to JamesD's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
Cool machine, really visionary for its time. I did find it interesting in the video at the end of the article, when the one fellow interviewed on the streets in the 60's said that computers were about control, and how the government would one day link up all the computers and we will all be controlled, and there'll be no freedom left. I'll bet he had no idea how right he was. -
Yesterday my friend was over and we plunked in Ice Hockey for the NES. 30 seconds later, we were playing. After 1-1/2 hours of screaming ourselves hoarse, we decided to play local co-op on his PS3. We tried to boot up a game, and it resolutely refused to load the game until we downloaded and installed the update. Problem was, the internet was down (small-town Canadian issues) and we couldn't download the update. So we turned the console off and popped in Mario Golf on the Gamecube. A couple minutes later, we were in business. As slab0meat said, change is not always for the best.

Shadow of the Colossus, first impression
TPA5 replied to davepesc's topic in Modern Console Discussion
This topic confused me until I realized it was originally from 2005. Amazing to think SOTC was released a decade ago, I really need to play it again. From what I remember, it was a very enjoyable experience. The sheer size and immensity of the clashes with the various Colossi is still unmatched I feel in any game since. -
Advice Needed. Best OS for Dedicated Emulation Computer
TPA5 replied to PeculiarSatyr's topic in Emulation
I'm going to add my voice to the masses here and say... Windows. My dedicated emu box uses Windows XP SP3, booting right into a front-end and hiding all the other bits of the OS. It isn't connected to the internet, so no need for any wasteful antivirus programs. It's slim, trim, and works perfect for everything I need it to do. Plus, Windows has all the great emulators. Even though Linux and even OS X have some good options, Windows is still king. Plus, connecting things like controllers to Windows is still easier than with OS X and Linux. I have a USB NES controller that works fabulously with Windows, but isn't recognized in OS X or my friends Linux box. In terms of trying to emulate anything past the N64/PS1, as stated by another user above, it starts to get dodgy. If you do want to give it a try however, you will definitely want to get your hands on a beefy CPU. Emulators such as Dolphin, which does Gamecube and Wii, is very, very, CPU-intensive. -
I'm not aware of any businesses per-say that do repairs for the GBA anymore. You might have some luck asking around at NintendoAge, but then again finding someone reputable can be a challenge. What about grabbing an AGS-101 from eBay and using the main board from that to replace the one in yours?
-
You could also just replace the batteries anyway, just to be safe. You can get batches of them (CR2032) relatively cheaply on Amazon or eBay, and they're pretty easy to change. As icemanxp300 said however, the best test is to remove the cart and replace in the same system where the save seems to hold. The first thing I do when I get a cart for NES, GB, etc, is swap the battery to ensure painless-saving, and avoid any nasty surprises. Also Aamp, I see you're from Winnipeg! It seems we share the same province

I've picked up SNES pads for the computer before, and usually I have the opposite problem, the directions are way too loose. I can definitely say the D-pad on the Xbox 360 controller is abysmal for gaming, stay as far away as possible.

It's a bummer that Tapatalk is so ham-handed in their approach to the updates. Tapatalk is a convenient way for me to browse the forums on the go, and I like how it notifies me of personal messages and such. Oh well, if the company can't get their act together, we're all stuck waiting until they do.

I'm so-so on Minecraft. I enjoy playing it with friends because it leads to a lot of goofing off, the same way I enjoy playing Garry's Mod. On my own, I personally don't find it terribly interesting. Mainly because I'm not ultra-creative when it comes to building houses, castles, etc, so just poking around and building square structures gets old pretty quick. I also find installing mods to be a massive pain in the ass, especially considering you need to install some mods/frameworks in order to install other mods, and some mods to install certain texture packs, and then I get a headache and stop caring.

One thing you learned after joining atariage
TPA5 replied to Manoau2002's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I learned that no matter how many times someone pastes William Shatner's face onto something, it still doesn't become amusing to me. I've also learned that collecting video games is almost akin to a sickness, in that it spreads and spreads throughout your home in the form of boxes, rubbermaid tubs, and shelves hidden away in closets. -
These are awesome! I want to print out the Star Wars one and put it in my office. The Samus chibi's are awesome too, but (and I apologize if this sounds crass) Samus' chest seems slightly off in the one on the right. Maybe they're just too... round? I probably shouldn't really think about it too much. Anyway, these are really sweet!

Cool piece of kit, but I don't think it's worth the price he's looking for. And thus, the problem with trying to sell something such as this. Obviously to the one who created it it's priceless in a sense. I'm sure the time that went into it is substantial, but to a buyer they don't really care how much time was put into it, they just care about the price. $1400 is really, really, steep for that.

What Computer games are you currently playing?
TPA5 replied to cimerians's topic in Modern Console Discussion
It is a really fun RPG, definitely something I sink a fair amount of time into. The story is intriguing enough that you want to keep moving forward, it has a great look to the game, and there's a lot to do. I picked it up on Steam Sale for $5, but it would be worth it even not on sale in my opinion. I didn't even know they ported King of Dragon Pass to mobile devices, that's awesome! But also a big problem, because it means I'll be tempted to play it at work -
Using a Tablet as a dedicated Retro BBS.
TPA5 replied to Omega-TI's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
I wonder if you couldn't also achieve good results using a Raspberry Pi with the Mystic BBS software. The Pi has very low power requirements, and you could attach an external battery pack to sustain it through power outages. -
Will XBox live go down on Christmas day?
TPA5 replied to Master Phruby's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I played Gamecube with my brother on Christmas Day. Guess not everything about modern consoles is great... Still, I dislike when groups call themselves "hackers", when all they do is DDOS attacks. That's not hacking, a trained chimp could pull one of those off. Sheesh. -
Well, technically it was answered in a few seconds by godslabrat. I don't see why people choose to go the route of being snarky and rude, instead of taking a few seconds of their own time to help them. Anyway, as others have mentioned the SNES Jr. is capable of playing any games the SNES can play. I've owned and used both, and to be honest I never really noticed a difference.

TPA5 replied to cimerians's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Good topic! When I manage to scrape the time... Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Apache vs. Havoc Primordia King of Dragon Pass -
Damn, you put a lot of work into this! The illustrations look really great, and the ideas you have are solid! You should ask a moderator to move this to the General forum, I think you'll get a lot more views there. You did an awesome job covering a wide range of games, and fitting Pac Man into them.

Just wondering if anyone here has any Christmas gaming traditions? Maybe a game you boot up every year at this time, something you play with the family, etc. For me (and this is going to sound so lame) I like to fire up my old save file for Animal Crossing on the Gamecube at Christmas. Christmas 2003 is when my dad got us kids a Gamecube (though he ended up playing it just as much as we did), which is what got me into console gaming, and Animal Crossing was the first game I ever played on a console that my family owned. Ever since, every Christmas I play Animal Crossing for a few hours, just to re-live a lot of the good memories from years past. What about you guys?

Your pre-built Gaming PC Poison...
TPA5 replied to Clint Thompson's topic in Modern Console Discussion
My one and only pre-built system I ever owned was a Compaq back in 2003 (or somewhere near there). I knew zilch about building PC's, but I managed to upgrade the hard drive, graphics card, and RAM. It gave me the confidence I needed so that when the time came to get a new PC in 2006/2007, I built my own. To me, pre-built gaming PC's are overpriced. But I suppose for people who really don't want to build their own, a pre-built can be a solid option. -
Save your money, don't get a new console until you can get genuinely excited for one of them. Judging by your post you aren't thrilled with any of the offerings yet, so why plunk down your cash?
