I had to change my boxer shorts after seeing the teaser. And it was just a bloody logo. The Metroid Prime series are my favourite games of all time. Don't fuck this up, Nintendo. Btw I have to get a Switch now. I just have to.

I agree with some of the things you said, like the scalping being worse and that Nintendo is erring on the side of crummy when to comes to business with these things. But I don't think it's a case of "sale is a sale" to them. Instead, this is like one big marketing campaign to get people talking about Nintendo. And it's working, considering all the news networks, blogs, tech publications, etc, are talking about it. So let's say 100,000 people get pissed off at Nintendo because of their handling of these consoles. That's a drop in the pan compared to the millions who are exposed to Nintendo through the constant media attention. It's really hard to buy that kind of attention, but they figured out a way to generate it. Even though some of it may be negative, the amount of people who will "never buy Nintendo again" is, to be honest, minuscule. That doesn't make it right, but that's what they're doing.

FS: 2 Retro 486 Dos/win 3.1 Computers plus extras
TPA5 replied to crtfreak's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Those'll be pretty heavy to ship, are you located in Canada by any chance? -
They are pre-cut, but they have a white border around them that needs to be trimmed off according to the listing.

That's pretty cool, actually! It's not quite the SNES Mini case, but it's pretty damn close. I'd just have to trust my shaky hands to carefully cut out the decals, but for $3 I could order a few. The North American SNES is ugly, without a doubt. But it's ugly in a way that appeals to me. But that's probably because I grew up with them around me, so it seems normal. I wonder how many units Nintendo would have to produce to meet demand and have them on store shelves (as opposed to selling out within minutes). 1 million? 2 million? 5 million? How many people actually want one of these things? Nintendo, as stated earlier in this thread, is (like most Japanese companies) pretty conservative. While it seems crazy to me that they're okay leaving money on the table, after all they could have milked the NES Mini for another 6-12 months, I guess they'd rather sell all the stock. It's still cool, and regardless of whether or not I think Nintendo boon-doggled the NES Mini, I like the actual product.

I live in a small town, with no real stores nearby to go to. Plus I work all day, so heading out on release day probably won't happen for me, personally. But at the same time, I feel like the shortage was intentional the entire time. It was a marketing ploy for Nintendo, and I feel like this machine is as well. They might make some money, but ultimately I don't see it as a huge money-maker. Especially with the announcement that it's only going to sell until the end of 2017. It's a hype-machine. To be fair, fans are constantly getting screwed by game companies and yet they always go back. Nintendo is hardly the only people who do it. I'm thinking if I can't (easily) get my hands on this one, I'll build a RasPi. Only thing I wish for is being able to find a case as nice as the one on the SNES Mini.

It's official: http://www.nintendo.com/super-nes-classic Looks neat. I can't wait to not be able to buy one of these, too. Word is from Nintendo that they'll produce these from September 29 until the end of 2017. After that, no promises. They also said they'll "produce more" of these than the NES Mini. Which still won't matter a turd as people will hoover these things up, too. Game list is good at least: Like I said, it looks cool, but I'm not going to fight to get one. The NES Mini was frustrating enough. If I can find one, cool. If I can't, fine. I'll just get a RasPi with a SNES case.

Playstation "Playman" Handheld Rumors
TPA5 replied to Rick Dangerous's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Even if Sony was trying to produce a "Switch killer", I wonder if Nintendo even really targets the same market Sony does. To a certain extent they do (gamers), but Nintendo definitely goes after the family market with more gusto than Sony (and that's not a bad thing.) Sony might make a badass Switch-like console/handheld, but if they market it to more hardcore gamers then it's kind of a non-point anyway. On the topic of mobile games vs. console/dedicated handheld games. I have exactly zero games on my iPhone. I have a bunch of games for my DS, Gameboy, Gameboy Colour, etc. Why? Because for me, physical buttons slay mushy, bland, horrid touchscreens any day of the week. I might be in the minority for that now, but if the time comes where handheld games are relegated to smartphones... you can find me in the corner with my Gameboy Colour. -
Undertale - Physical Release & PS4/Vita Release
TPA5 replied to KeeperofLindblum's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Good for them on getting such a sharp-looking physical release. The game is certainly one that doesn't interest me in the slightest, and when I had a chance to play it did nothing to capture me. But, in a world of digital-downloads its nice to see physical media getting some love. -
Atari at this point is a lot like brands such as Polaroid. They just get passed to and fro, from faceless corporation to faceless corporation. So when something like this is announced, I find it a little hard to believe it's going to be revolutionary in any way shape or form. I expect a product more in-line with an Ouya. That being said, if it has the chops to emulate well and looks good, I might get it just to have an emulation machine in a neat box for little effort. I know there's lots of ways to cram a Rapsberry Pi inside of an old NES, or something like that, but it's still more work than I care to perform.

Your guess on what OS will Ataribox be using?
TPA5 replied to koolaidpickle's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I would be surprised if it was windows-based. Can't see Atari wanting to pay licensing fees, but I've been surprised before. My assumption would be that they'll go the linux route. I'm still a little fuzzy on what exactly the Ataribox will be. Is it going to be more like an Ouya? There hasn't really been a successful device that's in the same vein as things like the Ouya yet, so I kind of doubt Atari will find a market for it. Unless it runs emulators really well, and has a good controller. Then I might be interested in it. The benefit of it being x86-based is that it should be easier to hack. -
Awesome article, that was such an enjoyable read! I love the history behind the cab, and the extra information you put in the article. I found the interview snippets, and the detective work, extremely fascinating. Thanks for sharing this with us. I've never played Gran Trak 10, but those engine sounds are quite possibly some of the most enjoyable I've heard in an arcade racer. They have a rich warmth to them that I wasn't expecting. My only wish is that I could have lived through that era, it would have been so cool to be able to play those games back in their glory days. Bookmarked your site so I can read the rest of your stories as well!

(Gone) Redemption Code for Rebel Galaxy and Alan Wake American Nightmare
TPA5 replied to TPA5's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Sent it your way, bud. -
Sorry to hear your stuff got lifted, that never fails to make a crappy day. Lots of good replies here already, but like others have said factory refurb is better than Gamestop/EB Games refurb (never, ever buy that crap). Get yourself a Slim Xbox 360 and you'll be pretty happy with it, first-gen 360's aren't very reliable.
-
I have a first-gen Xbox 360 that has quite a loud fan. Then again, the fact that it still works is a miracle.

The video game market is 10-different kinds of fucked up these days it seems. Greedy sellers with little to no knowledge, and stupid buyers with even less knowledge perpetuate a broken system. As long as there are enough idiots willing to fork over cash for meaningless (and false) words like "Launch Edition", this kind of nonsense will continue.

What are your favorite "summer systems"?
TPA5 replied to Rick Dangerous's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I play a lot more DS/Gameboy/Gameboy Colour in summer. Mostly because I love to go camping, and after a day of hiking/exploring it's nice to enjoy a fire, then crash in the trailer and play some games before bed. -
Super Nintendo Classic Edition - SNES Mini thread
TPA5 replied to Rev's topic in Classic Console Discussion
5 Reasons Nintendo Will Release the SNES Classic (Number 3 will SHOCK YOU!!!) -
Controllers are the biggest thing for me. Can't stand mushy, inaccurate, fumbly controllers. And, though I understand budget constraints limit these things, but using a connector that would allow us to use the original controllers. Heck, even if it had a USB port I'd be happy. That being said, it introduces more headaches on the support side as users attempt to plug in goofy, non-standard, or shitty controllers. But still. HDMI is also a big one for me. Yeah yeah, input lag and all that crap. But honestly, I don't think most casuals will notice it (I certainly don't). RCA jacks are getting scare on the TV's in my house, so HDMI makes everything that much easier. Oh, being able to select 1:1 aspect ratio. No squished or stretched games. Having the unit look good is nice too. One of the reasons I loved the idea of a NES Classic was the fact that it looked cool, and not out-of-place under or next to a TV. I want to display the PnP, not hide it because it looks like a hideous hunk of plastic gone wrong.

(Gone) Redemption Code for Rebel Galaxy and Alan Wake American Nightmare
TPA5 replied to TPA5's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Replied to the PM, Rebel Galaxy is all yours. -
Edit: Both games are claimed. Thanks folks. The GOG summer sale is on (finishing up, actually) and has brought great bounty to my hard drive. I received a code for Rebel Galaxy (claimed), and one for Alan Wake American Nightmare (claimed) as a 'reward' for my purchases. I already own Rebel Galaxy (fantastic game), and I have little interest in Alan Wake. So I figured I would do as I've done in the past here, and give the codes away. Rules are the same as last time: If you already own the games, don't ask for the code. If you don't really care about the games, don't ask for the code. You can only request one of the codes, you can't have both. I want the games to go to people who will actually play them. Post here first letting people know you're PM'ing me. Last time my inbox got a little flooded until I was able to update the topic. Cheers.

Cat got hit and killed by an asshole speeder today. It was a good 8 years buddy, I'm sure as hell going to miss you. Hope you have a nice sunbeam to sleep in, wherever you are.

Thanks again for the kind words folks. On the topic of keeping cats indoors, no. Cats need to hunt, run, be free. Despite the fact that I cared very much about my little buddy, if I did it again I wouldn't change anything. He loved being outside, and to keep him cooped up indoors would have been more cruel.

Nice! Glad you were able to get it working.

Whew, holy shit that is a big-ass arcade cabinet. I dig it.
