  1. Strange to me that a relatively new member would create a topic about this thing, then defend it with a gusto. You on the team or have you just picked a weird hill to make a stand on?

Either way, I have no patience or interest in any more of these crowd-funded projects. Come to me with an actual product and I might plunk down some cash for it. I'm getting really tired of being asked for money when all a company has are some bloody 3D renders and a video of some board with tape on it running a few seconds of a game. I remember the days when, out of sheer novelty, we handed our money over and in return received an actual product.

  2. I noticed some people are putting these up on eBay with proceeds goiong to charity.

I'm sorry, if you're charging upwards of $5,000, 99% of the proceeds should be going to charity. The highest I've seen is 50% for a $5,000.00 unit. The worst was a$5K unit with only 15% going to charity.

That's making the assumption they're telling the truth about money going to charity at all.

Scalpers don't bother me that much. I figure if someone is empty-headed enough to pay 5k+ for a $60 gadget, they have more money than brains and deserve to piss away their cash.

  3. Then you just got bad ROM dumps. A clean ROM from a reputable source on a device like an EverDrive, Harmony cartridge, or any other well made flash cart will play 100% exactly same as the original cartridges. Zero difference whatsoever in sound, graphics, or gameplay. As far as where to get good clean ROMs, I can't say due to forum rules, but I can tell you that somewhere out there is a Paradise for a rare bird that is the second largest living bird in existence. It is native to Australia and the only surviving member of the genus Dromaius. Find it's Paradise and you will have found the treasure you seek.

I laughed harder than I should have at this.

  4. Since the prices in that article were so vastly off, I decided to use https://www.pricecharting.com to find out what it would really cost to buy an original NES system and all 30 games included on the NES Mini. PriceCharting tracks what systems and games actually sell for on eBay then averages the prices out, so I find them to be a very reliable source for determining the value of games with good condition labels. That said, here's how the prices work out (rounded to the nearest dollar for each game):

    *snip*

    Total: $512

That's not including shipping costs mind you, so unless you're able to get good deals with free shipping on the system and all the games then you can probably tack on another $100 or so for shipping (figuring $2.80 per game for USPS First Class Mail shipping and around $15 for Priority Mail shipping on the console). All told you're looking at about $600 to buy an original NES system and all the games included on the NES Mini, which makes the Mini a very attractive option for the average consumer at 1/10th the price of the original and none of the hassle of trying to buy the system and all the games individually then finding a working CRT TV to play them on.

It may not be the ideal solution for the avid retro gamer (for them I'd recommend an original NES and an EverDrive N8) but it's still a neat little product for reintroducing the masses to a timeless piece of gaming hardware. Plus it's really cute. :)

In Canadian dollars, that would cost about $10,000.

Seriously though, why would I want to dick around with finding a console, finding games, paying out the ass, then figuring out how to connect it to my flatscreen, make sure everything works, fix blinking lights, clean carts, store carts, store the console, and store the accessories; when I could just pay 80 maple syrup dollars and get a neat little console that connects to my TV via HDMI, looks cute, and just works. Plus I get the modern benefit of save-states, different display modes, and links to the manuals which I can read on my phone. To me it's a no-brainer, especially because I'm trying to reduce the amount of shit I don't use in my house not add to it.

This thing ain't for the purists. This thing is for people like me who fondly remember these games, but don't want to empty their wallet and clutter their home to enjoy them on the big screen.

Really, this entire launch is an uber disaster. People are so blinded they're overlooking impossibly short cable length. Third party controllers aren't working. Whoever is playing this at home had to have either been gouged on extension cables or shelled out for long USB and HDMI cables to even play the thing. It still boggles my mind how anyone, under any circumstance would let those cords be that short in 2016 when we all have huge TVs.

And the ultimate slap in the face is they understocked it to laughable levels AND created this stupid #NESterday weekend where the Nintendo Tips Hotline is even taking calls again as a nostalgia piece for a system nobody fucking has! And even if you did get one on Amazon or online, you're not gonna get it until the line shuts down! It's all a total moot point and the circumstances surrounding this totally soured me on this console. I managed to get one and a controller today and if the prices are still where they're at now when mine comes in the mail next week, that bitch is being re-sold in a heartbeat.

I honestly see no point of hyping up a plug n' play, I guess if they think it's gonna help 'em get a few more sales, more power to them, but they've basically left people with a sour taste in their mouths all across the board regarding a nostalgia product that has legs of its own. I know Nintendo is pimping this as their holiday product, but it's $60. Most people who want it are gonna buy something like this no matter what. I would never give this as a surprise Christmas gift because anyone remotely interested is definitely gonna have bought it. I guess they're doing it for the crazy MILFs out there who will buy it 'cause it's in short supply for their goofball kid for him to toss aside and play Xbox One instead.

The Hindenburg was an uber-disaster. The Titanic was an uber disaster. The launch of the NES Mini? I don't think it qualifies as an uber-disaster.

Some people are so dramatic around here.

EDIT: I wonder if this really is a case of Nintendo trying to be big meanies and increase demand, or simply the actions of a traditionally conservative company with declining profits. After all, spinning up factories to produce this thing can't be cheap, and it's possible they decided to play it on the safe side and go slower with their manufacturing. Then, even when they saw the potential demand knew it was too late to start spinning up more factories so they decided to just go for launch and work to meet demand after the fact. I'm not saying that's the case, but it could be one reason supply is low.

  6. It's Veteran's Day for what that's worth -- a federal holiday for some people but not necessarily a big shopping day. Playing old video games is not the most patriotic way to spend the day.

That's one thing that actually bothers me a little about the release, and not just for the NES Mini but for any game that drops on the 11th. They could pick any other day, so why pick a day that people use to honour those who fought and died for us? It's a shame really. I make a point to go to Remembrance Day (that's what we call it in Canada) services. But I notice more and more that young people don't understand or don't care about it. It's a real shame, I have relatives that fought and died, and some that lived with invisible wounds the rest of their lives. It seems onerous to spend the day rushing out to buy a new toy and not spend at least a couple hours at a service. I understand that not everyone cares about that stuff, or maybe even agrees with it. But I think at least people can agree that it took a hell of a lot of courage and bravery for those men and women to charge into hell so people like me have the freedom I enjoy.

    I digress.

Off topic I know, that's just something that has always rubbed me the wrong way.

  7. As an interesting note, my local game stores isn't even sure they're getting any of these at launch. I was in the other day and asked them about it, they had put in an order for some and they couldn't get any confirmation on the order. So their assumption was because they're a small store and the demand is high, they won't even get any at launch.

  8.

So you prefer your graphics to look less like they're intended to look like, rather than more? For example, in the CRT image, it actually looks like there are shadows on his torso, in the pattern of human musculature, which is obviously what the graphics designer was going for. Have you even seen shadows fall on a human torso in the shape of perfect squares arranged on a grid?

What about Pac-Man? On an original arcade machine, the Pac-Man sprite and other things look ~round. Send the same ROM to a high-resolution monitor, and it looks like this:

Obviously the game designer was going for round.

By the way, the CRT looks a lot better in person than in an open-air photograph of the screen (which is the only way to capture it), taken with a cheap camera, no less, whereas the LCD examples look exactly how they look in person, because they are raw pixel dumps and you are viewing them on a high-resolution monitor, the same as playing the game on a high-resolution monitor in real life. You can't capture the brightness and vibrancy of a CRT by taking a picture of it (and taking a picture results in inherent losses in other areas as well), no more than you can capture the real-life brightness and vibrancy of a light bulb by taking a picture of it. Even with all of the losses with the CRT picture, it still looks better than MS Paint graphics.

Honestly, I prefer the sharpness of LCD to CRT any day. Grew up with CRT's, and now having used LCD's for years and years I find them much easier on the eyes.

Why are alot of YouTubers with like a Mil Subs getting the NES Classic Mini early

Because YouTubers are a special breed, far removed from us mere mortals.

Interesting that both those expansion cables are not scheduled to be released until the NES Classic Edition is to be released.

My interest died once I actually listened to the production units and heard the garbage that was being output from the noise channel : http://forums.nesdev.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15073&view=unread#unread

It's at moments like these that I'm very happy in my ignorance. Because to my ears I cannot tell enough of a difference in the audio to care.

  9. I dig it a lot, and can easily see myself picking it up at launch. Glad they did away with the silly dual-screen gimmick of the Wii U. Seeing NBA and Skyrim is a good start, hoping this means 3rd party support is stronger than previous consoles. Carts are a bit strange, but make sense when you realize the system is a handheld too. Wonder what the battery life will look like?

Either way, I feel it's a step in the right direction for the big N. Instead of trying to slug it out with Sony and Microsoft, they're just approaching gaming from a different angle. I like that, and really it's the way things will end up anyway. I have a hard time imagining, with the gains in power mobile devices are making, that in the future people will have a console and a handheld. It's all going to end up being the same anyway.

  10. Hahaha. I knew it likely wasn't, but can't hurt to try. No one talks about cougar boy

They come up on eBay very, very rarely so if you keep your eyes out you may have some luck. Alternatively, if you check out Brazilian retro gaming forums you may also catch some leads. Or you could hunt around for the Mega Duck system, which is the same as the Cougar Boy.

  11. Remember kids, there's still a thread for shitting on Mike. No need to piss in other threads as well.

No pre-orders here in Canuckistan either, so it looks like I'll be waiting on stock to get my hands on one of these. I wonder how well Nintendo will keep up with Christmas demand. At $60 this thing is basically in tchotchke territory, and I could see it being an impulse buy for a lot of people.

  12. The DS is one of my favourite systems of all time. There are a pile of kickass games for it, but here's a few I enjoy:

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride (Great RPG, remake of the SNES version)

Hotel Dusk (Awesome visual novel with a cool art style. Great film-noir/mystery setting)

Harvest Moon (If you haven't played a HM game yet, the one for DS is great fun)

Okamiden (Great adventure game with some cool gimmicks)

Metroid: Hunters (I'll be honest, even though I'm a huge Metroid fan I did not like the way this game controlled that much. Still, it's a really good experience on the DS)

Scibblenauts (A really fun puzzle game)

Super Princess Peach (Very fun platformer that focuses on a character that isn't the protagonist enough)

Wario Ware: Touched! (This game is like crack on the DS. You just want to "play one more" minigame)

Those are just a few of the ones I like. Check out Metal Jesus' DS videos on YouTube for some other great game suggestions and where to get started.

  13. Haven't checked this thread in weeks. I'm still really looking forward to this system, it's cool to see the Famicom too. Personally I am still hoping for a SNES Mini at some point! No pre-orders on the Mini for me though, they seem to be non-existent in Canada. I'll just have to wait for release, and then wait to get my hands on one. I was planning on giving one as a Christmas gift, we'll see if that actually happens.

  14. Well, a couple weeks in and I'm still enjoying my experience. Good game for relaxation. Now that mods are coming out for it I've been able to solve some of the minor issues I've had with the game like not being able to fly close to the surface and making space actually dark instead of nebula-filled. I'll get my money's worth yet I feel.

  15.

Oh, how I can't point out how wrong this statement is. In multiple interviews he mentioned that it's possible to meet up with other players, however unlikely... even making sure to mention that in big interviews on the tonight show and on colbert's show.

Not only is this a complete lie, but they even put stickers over the part of the case discussing online ratings on the back of the box in Europe as there's.. you guessed it...no online. Even Elite Dangerous allows you to find other users within its vast galaxy.

Is this an issue for every gamer? Probably not. But much like Watchdog's graphics being severely downgraded for the retail release vs initial footage, I HATE it when a developer blatantly lies about what the customer will be receiving after forking over their hard earned 60 dollars.

The fact Shawn is STILL evading questions about this proves he thought he'd get away with it longer than the first day or release, assuming the probability of meeting someone else would be almost impossible.

    Okay.
