  1. As for the games, I'd definitely like to see the more obscure ones rather than the standard-template ones.

     

     

    I'm for variety as long as it doesn't get to the point of being solely obscure titles.

     

     

    I'm going to start with a classic tomorrow that I think most people enjoy. As we get into it I'll do my best to mix it up between old favorites and some games that not everyone has played before.


  2. Might I also suggest adding what we've been doing in the ColecoVision HSC. After the regular season is over, have a Knockout Tournament where the players participate in a weekly game and whoever finishes last for that round is eliminated until only one is left.

     

    We can definitely do this. I'm all for changing up the competition from time to time. The NES knockout we did years ago was pretty fun.

     

     

    Personally it seems to me like if anyone wants to just play for individual competitions and doesn't care about the overall season points then it won't be any bother to them if we're still tracking them. They can still play & compete just the same and ignore the season points.

     

    I suppose you're right that having a season really doesn't exclude those folks that only care to participate in their particular favorites. I just wanted to make sure that if no one cared about season points we didn't continue doing it just because.
    As it stands I'm thinking a 15 game season with 2 week rounds. We'll score according to the number of participants. E.g. if we have 10 players the top player will earn 10 points, second 9, third 8, etc. I will post new rounds on Sunday. Competition will run two weeks through Sunday at 11:59 PM CST. This means there will be a day overlap at the beginning/end of each round. Each Sunday you can choose to start the new game or get a score in for the previous game.
    Thanks for your feedback. I'm going to wait a few days to see if anyone else wants to chime in. Otherwise, I'll get the season going this Sunday.

  3. This forum has unfortunately been dead for a while so I've volunteered to take the reins. Before we start anything I'd like to get some opinions regarding the format of the competition. Specifically I'd like to know if everyone likes the traditional 15+ game season format or if anyone would prefer just competing on a game by game basis. We could also try shorter tournament like "seasons" of 3-5 games.


    I remember when I was really active in the HSC the overall season points were not as interesting to me as the individual game competitions. I just want to know if anyone else shares that opinion or if it's preferred to keep the status quo.


    Additionally I know sometimes people get busy and don't have time to compete in every round or may have just missed the beginning of the season and don't want to jump into the middle when they're already at a deficit. Game by game play or a shorter season would benefit those folks.


    So let me know what you think. Otherwise if there are any games you'd like to request for whatever format we decide on, please do so.

  4. It seems like overkill, but I would still recommend the X-Arcade tank stick. There are a lot of 1 or 2 button games like Galaga, Donkey Kong or Moon Patrol. But, there are also games like Defender (for example) that have 5 buttons, in kind of a weird configuration, that you can emulate nicely with the tank stick. In addition there are also some great trackball and duel joystick games like Crystal Castles, Robotron 2084 and Marble Madness that are impossible to play with a single joystick and a button or two.

     

    However, I can also recommend an inexpensive alternative that I started with. An NES Advantage and a USB NES RetroPort are a way to get yourself an arcade style controller for MAME under $50. And, if you're at all into NES that's just a bonus.

  5. Under the Preferences menu there is a Keys... menu. You can use this to configure which keyboard keys interact with the pinball table. The most important keys are: Left Flipper, Right Flipper, Plunger, Add Credit and Start Game. Occasionally a table will have specific keys hardcoded into it to add coins or start the game. In those cases the keys to use will be specified in the instructions that came with the table file.

     

    I downloaded the Atari 2600 Video Pinball file and was able to play by starting the game with the 1 key as specified in the included instructions file. There was no need to add a credit. Everything ran fine after that.

     

    I'm not 100% clear as to where you're getting stuck so if you're still having issues after trying the above let me know and I'll see if I can provide any other assistance.

  6. I originally had the same problem. I found that my emulator defaulted to using the mouse instead of the game pad. Once I specifically switched the input it worked fine. I didn't know this before, but this game apparently had a spinner controller packaged with the cart. Hence the spinner emulation via the mouse.

     

    Btw,I've been playing with the game pad, but wondering if the mouse control would be legal for this game. Technically it's not a spinner. What's the consensus on this?


  7. I'm going to throw my two cents in, as I recently modified/cleaned my NES so that I could play light gun games. I did snip the lockout chip pin. Frankly, as you've read in other places, it didn't help very much. I ended up cleaning both my NES connector and my carts with rubbing alcohol and 600+ sandpaper GENTLY! That did the trick. If you use the sandpaper take it slow, rub gently, until the black comes off of the contacts, no more. If you do this too vigorously you can rub the metal off and ruin the cart/pins. Once everything is clean, you shouldn't have any more blinking issues.


  8. I played the first Metal Gear sometime around when it came out. I just didn't really get it. I feel like that game needs to be played with a guide, but maybe that's just a dumb 11-year-old talking. The game was so different from anything else I'd ever played at the time, that I was just confused.

     

    Maybe I should give it another go? Pretty sure I have the cart...

     

    I really enjoyed playing through the game as a kid, but I also had the articles from Nintendo Power at the time. About six months ago I replayed this for the first time in about 25 years. It had been on my list for a while. I think it was definitely worth playing again. My thirty-something year old self had a much easier time with it than my 12 year old self. You should give it another whirl.
