  1. A couple of quick scores while play testing for basic rules.
  2. The scoreboard is up! Please let me know if there are any special rules for your chosen games that need to be stated.
  3. You're not playing on the correct settings. If you're going to start cheating again then don't bother submitting any more scores. I think I'm safe to speak for everyone when I say we're all tired of it.
  4. Pffft...that's a bit advanced for me. Here's what I'm still working with.
  5. I'm working on a new scoreboard page for this that'll be similar to the arcade board from a couple of seasons ago. Bear with me for a few days while I get it together.
  6. Dang ol' NES, I'll tell you what...
  7. That's a good question. We don't normally worry about that with the regular season because the likelihood of two players getting the exact same score is normally really low. There are some games that have a score limit and after reading your question here I've added a rule to exclude those titles. I'm not sure at this moment how to resolve that. We'll see as we get toward the end of the season whether this will be an issue or not.
  8. Yes, you can submit a better score any time. It's actually to your advantage to do so as the better the top score is, the less points are earned by the other players. I've updated the rules to make this clearer.
  9. Pick one game that you particularly enjoy or are especially good at and post your best score for this game. This will become your personal game for the season. Any other HSC participant can attempt to beat your score and claim the "king of the hill". If by the end of the season you still have the top score for the game you posted and are still "king of the hill" you'll earn significant bonus points. This competition will run concurrently with Season 21. The points, however, will remain separate. At the end of the season we'll add up all the points scored and find out who's the real NES king. Scoreboard Rules: New titles will be accepted any time through season 21, round 8. Just post your high score in this thread and let me know it's a new game. I will then create a scoreboard for your individual game. No game played in the HSC for the last two seasons will be accepted. You may check this list: https://neshsc.neocities.org/Games/GameList.html and sort by Last Played to determine if something you have in mind is acceptable. Any game played after 3/7/2021 is out of bounds. No games that have a score limit will be accepted in order to decrease the possibility of a tie. For example Gun.Smoke stops at 999,990. Note that games where the score rolls over are ok. I will have final say as to whether a game is acceptable to post for the HSC. If you are unsure please contact me before you put the effort in to obtain a high score. If another player beats your score, you can post a new score at any time to attempt to reclaim the top spot. You do not have to wait for another player best your score in order to post a new one. You may improve your own score at any time. This is actually to your advantage if you're in first place as it decreases the points other players' scores are worth. See scoring point #2 below. Challenges to the top score may be posted in this thread through season 12, round 13. Afterward, every player who selected a game has two rounds (14-15) to regain the top spot for their chosen game. Scoring: A player will earn 25 points for each game for which they hold the first place position. Players in positions 2, 3, 4, etc. will earn points based on how close they are to the 1st player's score. For example: 1st place score is 100,000 Challenger scores 50,000 that's 50% of the top score. Therefore the player earns 50% x 25 = 12 Challenger scores 35,000 that's 35% of the top score. Therefore the player earns 35% x 25 = 8 Points will always be rounded down. This means the maximum points the second place player may earn is 24. At the end of the season, if a player is in first place for their selected game then they'll earn an extra 50 bonus points on top of the 25 for being in first place for a total of 75 extra points. General HSC Rules: To participate, just post a score to the thread. Anyone can join in at any time. A picture or screenshot is encouraged when posting a score but not required. Do not exploit game glitches, take advantage of 1-up loops or intentionally die in order to replay a level. If "point pressing" is not specified in the game rules you should be moving forward in an attempt to complete/loop the game and not "camping" for points. No emulator save states, slow-mo, rewind, etc. No cheats, e.g. Konami code, Game Genie, etc. Turbo controllers are allowed.
  10. Welcome back for Season 21 of the NES HSC! Since it was requested, we're going to start this season off with Kickle Cubicle. I'm not familiar with this game so if there are any special rules we need to include please let me know. This season I'd also like to introduce a "king of the hill" competition. The general idea for the competition is that everyone picks one game and posts their highest score for that game. Other players will then attempt to beat that score to become king of the hill for that title. The competition will run through the entire season. Bonus points will be awarded to players who still hold first place for their selected game at the end of the season. The complete rules are listed below. I tried to be concise with the explanation. Feel free to ask questions if anything isn't clear. After some thought I've decided to keep the regular season competition separate from the king of the hill. They'll both run at the same time, but the points will stay separate. I've moved the new competition to it's own thread: https://forums.atariage.com/topic/340597-nes-king-of-the-hill/ Game Rules: No Continues No Passwords Manual Score Post Deadline: Sunday September 18 at 11:59 PM CDT. 11. Season 21 will begin on September 4th. I'd like to add a new scoring mechanic to the next season to change things up. I'm working on a few different options.
  12. Insane score. You're a machine! Updated the scoreboard: https://neshsc.neocities.org/Games/Castlevania_III_Draculas_Curse.html.
  13. LOL. In my last post I was going to mention something about how you were already dominating the leaderboard so you don't need to worry about the "questionable" score. I removed it because it sounded a bit patronizing when I read it back and that was not my intention. Glad to see you crushed it anyway. That's awesome. I just updated the scoreboard.
  14. I think modifying the gameplay via emulator settings is a slippery slope. It's hard to judge from game to game what confers an advantage and what doesn't. Not to mention I didn't even know this was an option so trying to stay out in front of potential rule issues in this regard is nearly impossible for me. For the sake of simplicity games should be emulated as close to the real hardware as possible.
  15. Glad you all had fun with this one. There's some great scores here, especially for first time players. Here is the final scoreboard. Thanks to everyone who participated. You all make running this thing worth while. I don't yet have a start date for season 21, but I will post something soon after the site migration is complete. See you next season! Season 20 Final Standings:

  17. Some good looking scores here! This is one of my favorites and I didn't get a chance to get a score in this round. I'm glad you all enjoyed it though. 19. I can't accept this score. You've used some kind of cheat like a game genie code or something similar. The continue passcode in the screenshot indicates you made it to level 9. However, it also indicates the plane stats are fully maxed out. That's not possible without cheating. So there's no question, here is the documentation the explains this code: https://strategywiki.org/wiki/1943:_The_Battle_of_Midway/Password_system.
  20. In my opinion there are a handful of games that are tedious without turbo and this is one of them. If not having to button mash for hours increases your level of appreciation (and/or comfort, looking at you carpal tunnel) for a game then by all means, turn on the turbo. Dodging enemy fire isn't any easier no matter how fast your cannon is firing.
  21. Fakecortex comes from behind! Practice makes perfect. Points Awarded: fakecortex 267,540 +25 Razzie.P 222,560 +20 Frozone212 75,880 +17 mbd39 17,460 +14 asponge 12,260 +12 Dashopepper 9,370 +10 RuySan 9,110 +8
  22. 1943 hasn't been selected for the HSC since September 2006. Interestingly the 1942/3 NES game manuals mark the first appearances of Capcom's Captain Commando character as a "fictional spokesman" for Capcom USA touting the NES "Challenge Series." Here are the other games in the Challenge Series (1986-1989): https://fictionalcrossover.fandom.com/wiki/Captain_Commando. 23. Sorry guys, I'm going to extend this one the rest of the week until Sunday. I just don't have the time right now to pick something proper and get it posted.
  24. I figured as much. Just didn't want to throw out scores and change rules without running it by everyone. Rules have been updated. Game on!
