  1. So what is the object of this game ?

I get that one is trying to make a continuous grid of some kind, turn the grid green ?? > but you can literally wander the screen turning things around aimlessly till you die.

The game instructions read like a stoned guy giving directions to some rural monument , and there is nothing on youtube to show strategy or game play.

I've always been left scratching my head as to the perceived value of this game, as after about 10 minutes of playing it, I generally decide that my time would be better spent doing laundry.

Am I missing something here ?

When turned green, the paths have to lead back to that starting point they indicate. I tried it a handful of times and it's growing on me. (I miss the days when games could be slightly different from each other, though of course you still had gluts of shooters or maze munching or whatever)

  2.

I'll pen you in on those, but remember; they must be played with stock controls. No homemade or modded anything, even if made of all Atari parts like my custom paddles.

I love those 2 games, but just want you to make an informed choice. :)

Yep, I understand. Part of the interest for me is the fact that it would NOT be with paddles, and Super Breakout takes you right back to the console's release and all the hopes and dreams :-) Just think of all the people ripping open the box and firing up Super Breakout! :-)

  3. Here's a flyer for the Atari/Sega version:

Here's an image of one plugged into a 5200:

    This would be awesome!

I think you'd be very surprised how many people would buy this at the $50 level.

The Atari 5200 has been out 30+ years and will easily be out 30+ more... getting these boxes out there in the hands of the users would be a great gift for the Atari community-- It's only going to get harder and harder to get Masterplays and the like,.

Put simply, say you have Space Invaders and Galaxian, but have no way to play Galactic Chase. You could post that you will miss that game and be awarded the 3 round points as if you'd placed last in that game. Consider it "participation points" or the same as posting a zero. You can do this for only one of the 3 games and not for the bonus selection(s).

It's a method of inclusion rather than exclusion. :)

This hasn't been invoked yet in 3 runnings so far...

Ah gotcha, I was thinking too hard. So if you only have two out of three games there ya go. Thanks!

  5.

    The scoring:
Because of the huge difference in scoring on these games, each game will be scored separately, but round points will be earned per each position. Top spot earns 10 round points, 2nd spot earns 9 round points, etc. Lowest round points will be 3. 3 round points will also be given for missing one game. Player must post which game they will miss so I can award the "token points"

Can you explain the bold quote for a newbie?

    Thanks!

  6. I'm just trying to finish the race :-)

First time playing PP on the 5200, and I'm impressed by how good the OE controller really is for this game. Actually, the GAME impresses the hell out of me. There's a lot of action when you're weaving between cars! I can't imagine how excited someone in 1983 would be to have this at home all for themselves!

Megamania was one of my favorites from my 2600 days, so I don't think my muscle memory was able to get past the 5200 controllers. I spent three sessions (30-60min each) and got better and better, but just couldn't get past the dumb mistakes.

I do think it's a wonderful game, however, and it has that perfect amount of frustration and "I can do just a BIT better next time!" that has me going for the reset button.

Part of the fun for me was finding my old Ken Uston book in storage from 1983 which talked about strategy in this game-- he recommends on levels 2, 4 etc to shoot out the middle to create a safe area (had I known this earlier it would have helped-- I kept running out of energy on those types of levels).

Someday I'll have digital joysticks! :-)

  8. I put this thread in the 5200 section because this controller design is EXCLUSIVELY for the 5200... but can be used on other systems.

I made a sketch of a controller design that I would love to see created someday (if possible). I say if possible because I don't know if an Analog/Digital joystick combo even exists... or if it can be switchable from joystick mode to Trak Ball mode (5200). The design is heavily based on the 5200 Trak Ball casing design.

So to all you experts out there... based on all the features this design has, can it be done?

Would anyone buy such a controller, especially if it looks like something Atari could have released in 1982?

Another feature that I forgot to include is the ability for the Trak Ball to be used as the paddle controller for 2600 games.

And of course, it could be used as a DUAL STICK for games like Robotron 2084, Space Dungeon, etc.

I like the illustration. Good job! :)

  9. Scored one of these off ebay for $19.99... just got it today. It was listed as a PC controller, but I noticed that the plugs looked exactly like the one I already have for the 5200. I've said it before... these are the best controllers for playing MOST games for the 5200.

My original plan was to use the guts of the competition pros that I have and cannibalize some of my old 5200 sticks to make an arcade quality stick, but since these are extremely hard to find now a days, I think I'll just keep them the way they are.

    Wow.

Any tips for keyword searching? Just look for PC controller, then grab something the size of the Atari 5200 plug? Or is there visible product number/markings indicating it's for the 5200?

    thanks!

  10. This game is driving me nuts! Any tips? I hooked up my 5200 this weekend thinking that would be better than an emulator, but nope-- about the same results. Collision detection seems kind of wonky sometimes, too. Oh yeah, and the sun was in my eyes. Back to the basement for me!!! (I did kill the wizard once, however... so I'm getting better!)
