  1. Sure. I suppose you could argue that maybe to a few geeks that fact might somehow have been important in deciding to buy a NES instead of a 7800 -- I'll give you that. But did the average Joe on the street know or care about that when deciding which system to buy next? No. To the average Joe, the 7800 was the next-gen 2600. That's the point I was trying to make. Most people don't care about the technical details inside of things.
  2. I don't follow your logic. An enhanced 2600 would be a step backwards from the regular 2600. Humm -- how is that exactly? The only reason? How about the best reason! (I like to look at the glass as being half full instead of half empty) Ummmm, well I hate to break it to you, but they did -- it's called the 7800. However, an enhanced 2600 would have tied Atari over until the 7800 was ready and offered backwards compatibility at the same time. The 5200 wasn't a wise move, as it required everyone to throw out the cartridge library and start over (sure, there was the 2600 adapter, but how many people honestly bought that?). Basically: 2600 ---> 2600+ ---> 7800 Rather than: 2600 ---> 5200 ---> 7800
  3. That's it? Dang, why didn't Atari just release an expanded memory version of the Atari 2600? Call it the 2600+ or something instead of releasing the 5200. Course it never was like Atari to do things that made sense....
  4. Cybermorph is pretty good, especially considering that it was the "pack-in" game. There was a sequel to it called Battlemorph that is excellent. You'll need the Jaguar CD unit for it though.... There have been lots of excellent post-death releases, mostly by Songbird, Telegames, and B&C ComputerVisions. These are games that were complete or near complete at the time, but didn't make it out the door for whatever reason. Games like Skyhammer, Hyperforce, Towers II, Space War 2000, etc. These aren't really homebrews though -- but they are some of the best games that the Jaguar has....
  5. Have you tried contacting Fairchild directly? Back in the old days, companies used to give out free samples to pretty much anyone who asked. Tell them you're a poor college student working on your senior project or something. Of course, I think lots of companies have discontinued this practice now days -- but it never hurts to ask
  6. I'll second geosteve. I have IS3 and an SD2300, and I've never had any problems.... Edit: Now that I think about, I remember back in the day having to send away for a free firmware upgrade CD, which I did. So maybe it only works on ones that have had their firmware flashed or something. I don't think it was ever revealed what this mysterious upgrade CD actually fixed.
  7. Rev 23 is the last, but I think Rev 18 is generally considered the most stable and playable.
  8. That's pretty sweet. I already have a copy of rev 18, but I might have to pick up a second from B.J. just to get that nice full-color manual. I think B.J. was also selling shirts and bumper stickers a few months back, though I don't see them on his web page....
  9. Did you try pressing "0" on your controller? That's the standard way to turn music on or off on Jaguar games....
  10. How do you do that? I didn't come across any game-save feature in my version of the cart. Emulator. The only way to play, imho....
  11. 1) No, but I wonder if the answers about how to make potions might be in the notebook that I have recovered but need to get translated. Looking at the text in the binary, it seems that I can get it translated once I find the battle plans and bring them to the elders. 2) Haven't bothered with buying any. However the "daemon" sword that I got off of Hellast is WAY, WAY more powerful than the standard sword that you start with. 3) Yep, I have happened across the immunity bug a number of times. I always make sure to save my progress when that happens . I have no idea what causes it though. Seems to be almost random.
  12. Yes, 5 towns so far. However the 5th town is almost completely walled off until you find and return the battle plans to the "elders". I haven't found the battle plans as of yet (but I haven't really tried too hard yet either).
  13. Someone needs to solve this thing!!! I'm guessing that we've only seen maybe 1/3 or 1/2 of the game so far. I'm sure there are more cities to be explored, etc. The game is HUGE. I'm still wondering how the developers ever expected it to fly on the Lynx without some way to save your progress. The only way to play this is on an emulator (imho).....
  14. In your pocket! Oh no, wait......
  15. Something interesting I noticed with a hex editor... In the code itself the full name of the game is: "Daemonsgate I: Dorovans Key" I wonder if that really makes the PC version Daemonsgate II? Maybe they didn't call it that though because the Lynx version was never released....
  16. There are also lists of weapons, armor, herbs and a bunch of random words. I don't know that this really helps though. Mitch I've found the first two messages. The second two are very interesting. Looks like I should try to find Connor McDougal! It was released on the PC and I have the walkthrough for it. However, they are VERY different from each other -- some of the town names are the same, but the storyline isn't even close. The two games are more like distant relatives....
  17. It's kind of a fun game, but I don't know if I have it in me to keep exploring more. The games seems have the same failing that the PC version did -- most of the time you have no clue where you're supposed to go or who you're supposed to talk to. So you spend endless hours roaming around hoping that you'll by chance come across the right thing to do. I stumbled across the 5th city pretty much by accident. And right now I don't have the foggiest idea where to begin looking for the Battle Plans. I'm sure they're somewhere, but it could take hours and hours to find them It can get VERY tedious.
  18. I'm using the version that's available for download here.
  19. I've been playing this game quite a bit lately, and I'm managed to locate a 5th city (Selakier). I don't think anyone has found this previously?!?! As I've been playing, I've been putting together a strategy guide of sorts that includes maps, a walkthrough, etc as I go along. See the attached pdf file. It's not all organized the best, but there's so much information in the game that it become a bit difficut to manage. At this point, I need to find the Battle Plans in order to advance the story. I don't suppose anyone here knows where they are? Anyhow, I'm pretty much convinced that it is possible to beat the game -- I've seen nothing to indicate that it can't be done. But it's been very time consuming just getting this far.... Strategy_Guide.pdf__WP_.pdf
  20. Sure that's true for new/fresh EEPROMS. But considering this thing is 25 years old, I know I wouldn't be taking any chances. I'm sure it's probably okay though....
  21. I hope you didn't use a flash when you took that picture. That would sure stink if you erased it!!!!

    Help in Lynx Area

Quote from Carl in a recent thread: So it seems possible that you have a original unaltered version(?)
  24. The kids controller is also compatible. They are all really the same controller, just in different plastic casing
  25. Not unless you change the oscillator. True, the transistors themselves run faster the colder they are, but faster transistor speed doesn't change the system speed. But your work wasn't all for nothing. Heat kills transistors -- so you have probably increased the live expectancy of your Jaguar. Of course other things such as punch-through, electromigration, etc also kill transistors -- but still.....
