1. You should have no trouble finding a replacement. Caps are a dime a dozen (literally). A great place to get things like this is Digi-Key
2. You know, I just can't get excited about any of these "rereleases" from Atari Corp. The way I see it, Atari was just trying to unload a bunch of old ROM chips that were laying around in some warehouse and trying to do it as cheaply as possible. I only count the Warner releases as the "true" releases. Maybe it's just me....
3. Any progress on this? Phrase searching is still broken from what I can tell.....
4. If you know how to solder, it's a piece of cake to make one to use with your Atari 2600 driving controller. All you need is 1 male DB-15 connector and 1 male DB-9 connector, both of which are available at your local Radio Shack. Then solder up the wires as required (I forget the exact wiring -- a bit of searching on the net should find it). It takes 5 or 10 minutes tops to make one....
5. Yea, the color scheme is definately confusing. I wish they had fixed it in BS Gold. Thunderbirds explanation for the coloring scheme being they way it is was: Green: Means "go" ahead and shoot at it... Red: Means "stop", don't shoot at it... So it kind of makes sense, but is definately backwards from most games. Unfortunately they screwed up the manual and listed it the other way around!
6. You suck! 904419 Well, in my defense, I will say that they were needed in the development of the JagLink II. Luckily I was able to purchase them all at their original prices (2 bs, 1 bs gold) and not have to pay the inflated prices they go for these days....
7. The graphics in Gold are also slightly improved over the graphics in the original one. I believe that the network code was also tweaked a little, but might be wrong on that one. 903769 Weren't the colors fixed so that enemies now were red and friendlies green? Or did they just correct the manual so that it now reflects how the game is? I could be wrong since it's been a while since I've played it....
8. If there wasn't so much hoarding of this cart, alot more Jag fans could enjoy this game. 902081 Hah! That's what all the non-hoarders say! 902991 Does having three copies count as hoarding?
9. I've always thought a nice mod would be to have a switch on the colecovision to enable or disable the expansion port. That would make it so you could leave it plugged in all the time. I've also always wondered why Coleco made it so that you have to unplug the controllers on the main unit and plug them in on the expansion module. I mean, couldn't they have come up with a better design so that the controllers could stay plugged in to the main unit???
10. As I recall, expansion module #1 was released at launch, while expansion module #2 was released some time later (maybe a year later?). I believe Zaxxon was also a launch title, though I think quantities were in very short supply because of it's popularity. I remember getting a Colecovision, Zaxxon, Smurf, Venture, and Cosmic Avenger for Christmas just after it came out. Man, does that bring back the memories....
11. You see, over in Japan it is very crowded and they don't have room for real boys. So instead they have "virtual boys". When I visited Japan in the mid 90s, I saw the Japanese people taking their "virtual boys" to daycare, school, sports practice, etc. In the US and the rest of the world, we still have lots of room so we tend to prefer "real boys". That is the real reason why the "virtual boy" did so poorly over here. And now you know the rest of the story....
12. I had an Apple IIgs back in the day (and still do, though it has been boxed up for years now). I used to love the thing, but today if I take a step back and take an objective look at it, I'm not so sure. The support from Apple itself was pittiful. It was way over priced and way under powered. Apple released a whopping three programs for it (The OS itself, Appleworks GS, and Hypercard GS) -- and Appleworks GS was just the name they slapped on Beagleworks GS after they bought it. The latest release of Appleworks GS has bugs in it that Apple knew about but never fixed. And did anyone actually use or care about Hypercard GS? Basically, Apple kept trying to pretend the machine didn't exist and kept trying to kill it off. As for third party support, there was very little of that as well. Sure there were some native GS titles released, but their numbers are small compared with other systems of that era. I guess what I'm saying is that the GS is definately the best Apple II machine, but if you're looking for the best 16-bit machine you may want to look at the Amiga or Atari ST before making your decision....
13. It's safe occasionally, like when it's 3am and all the bars are closed. But I wouldn't recommend it on a regular basis. That stuff can really mess up your life, and the lives of your Atari carts around you....
14. Well, if I sit really close to my TV I can't see anything else other than my TV. I guess that means every system is Virtual Reality! 892000 TV doesn't immerse well. Once you get close enough to eclipse everything else, you're only seeing part of the image. 892020 Ah, so the Virtual Boy was Virtual Reality because it held your eyes at the optimal distance from the screen? I still don't buy it. Back to my original post -- calling it "virtual" anything was a slime on Nintendo's part. It was 3D, not virtual.
15. I was with you on the for the most part, but I can't agree with this at all. Nintendo held on to cartridges instead of embracing CDs long after it became clear to everyone else that CDs were the way to go -- and paid a heavy price for that decision. Nintendo continues to diss online gaming to this day long after is has become clear to everyone else that online gaming is the future. Nintendo missed the boat on the two biggest gaming advances in the last 10 years (CDs and online gaming). Nintendo taking leaps? Yea, maybe 10 or 15 years ago, but I don't see much innovation at Nintendo these days -- unless you consider bongo drums innovative...
16. Well, if I sit really close to my TV I can't see anything else other than my TV. I guess that means every system is Virtual Reality!
17. Well, it was definately a slime on Nintendo's part by calling it "Virtual Boy". I mean, most people aren't going to consult a dictionary for every purchase they might make. Now if they had been honest and called it something like "3D Boy", that's one thing. But like I said, Nintendo tried to slime one by the consumer -- and paid for it in the end with a failed system....
18. Mandatory quote from "The Fugitive": "What I want from each and every one of you is a hard-target search of every gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse in that area."
19. Wow, very cool. It certainly seems legit -- I mean, it's not like the seller was trying to hype it as a "very rare prototype" or anything. The auction just seems like it was the average Joe selling off some Atari carts....
20. The rights to Coleco and Colecovision were sold about a year or so ago to River West Brands, and the web site was sold as well. The "old" Coleco web site was run by a Coleco enthusiast, while the "new" Coleco web site is run by the River West Brands. So that is the reason why the web site has totally changed. It is not due to lack of interest in the Colecovision -- rather it because there IS interest that the rights got snapped up recently.... And if you have been paying attention, the "new" Coleco just released a bunch of handhelds, such as these: Basketball Baseball Soccer I think we are going to see even better things in the future. However, I will agree that their web site is pretty pathetic at the moment....
21. Sold "unpainted" and to the "heights bidder" Not Mine! Shipping in the US seems reasonable, but jeez, I wonder where international shipping for $95 in shipping would get it to -- Antarctica!!! Disclaimer: Wasn't ICD from Rockford, IL? And didn't they rip a bunch of people off? Buyer beware, I guess....
22. Hate to part with them, but with two small kids I don't really have time for them any more. They are located a little ways north of Boston.... Asteriods Millipede
23. No demo for Tunnels & Trolls has ever been found (other than the title screen). Coleco did release a mostly-completed game called Troll's Tale for the Adam in to the public domain after the Adam was shelved. Perhaps that's the game you're thinking of? I have Troll's Tale, along with a few other games that Coleco released for the Adam in to the public domain (but never sold commercially). Not sure if these fit the category of "prototypes" or not....
24. I thought it was a great game. One of the few that I have ever played start-to-finish!
