  1. I started getting interested in 2600 Homebrew when I was working on my Android port of Stella. Here is my first effort - Lunokhod 1. You control the Lunokhod rover by remote control, shooting everything you can. As a kid I always wanted games with no shot limitation, a want that has worked it's way into this game. There are lots of missiles and explosions :-). I'm still working out the backstory, but the goal is to keep radioactive debris from landing on your moon base. This is a playable build but it has only one wave with one difficulty. It will eventually have waves that get progressively more difficult. lunokhod1-b1.bin lunokhod1-b2.bin lunokhod1-b3.bin lunokhod1-b4.bin lunokhod1-b5.bin lunokhod1-b6.bin lunokhod1-b8.bin Oh, and here's the source: (Certainly not because I'm proud of it :-). I haven't touched assembly since college and I've been quite careless with space and cycles, but I do like when other people share so...) lunokhod1-b1.asm lunokhod1-b2.zip lunokhod1-b3.zip lunokhod1-b4.zip lunokhod1-b5.zip lunokhod1-b6.zip lunokhod1-b8.zip Current Changelog: changelog.txt
  2. I don't have a favorite programmer but I've noticed lots of games Nathan Strum are involved with have a certain personality/character that set them apart.
  3. There are handful of threads like this and they all seem to end the same way. Looks like VGWIZ a.k.a. OldGuru hasn't been on since 2010 - anyone know how to contact him? Looking at the wayback machine, the cost of a run of 1000 would be getting in the $2-3 dollar range per unit (http://web.archive.o...08f9b0d93a7fd7e). That is not a terribly expensive proposition.
  4. Agree with kingofcrusher, except for the "unfortunately" bit. Getting there is half the fun!
  5. I dowloaded and played with this a bit, had it playing Freeway in fairly short order. It does provide evidence that a game is being played, but as with many academic projects ease of use was not high on the list of priorites. The documentation states that the emulation core is decoupled from audio/video and while that is technically true, it is more accurate to say that the audio/video portion has been removed :-). Still super cool, and this would probably make a great foundation for adding network play to Stella.
  6. Disappointed isn't the right word, more like surprised, in a good way. As someone else said the game stands on its own and the current name doesn't represent it well. The game so far is a kick and I look forward to playing a version with sound - even if you are only half as crafty with that I expect it will be worth waiting for :-).
  7. I agree. Allow the user to select the mode and skip the detection.
  8. Well, depending on what you mean by "source code," it sort of does. That is, the include files are there for you to inspect and decipher the assembly code. The source code for the *compiler* is another matter-- the source code for the earlier versions of bB was available, but I'm not sure if Fred has posted the source code for the later versions. Yeah, the compiler. Mainly because recent versions don't seem to include a Linux version.
  9. I had a look at bB and decided to do my tinkering in assembly. I think I'd warm up to to bB a bit more if came with source code.
  10. Assuming my powers of deductive reasoning are correct - look at post 321! Loved it! Dots: eaten. Tonight I am going through all the names mentioned in How to Win at Video Games to see where they are now :-)
  11. No more delayed gratification for me, I opened my package tonight and my SS rocked it! A selection of M-Network carts, two boxes of dots, a Save Mary repro cart, and last but not least a copy of How to Win at Video Games. And was that the faint smell of pipe tobacco? Thanks SS!
  12. Run it in Stella, while it is visible press alt+comma. That will put Stella in "debug colors" mode and every TIA object will be given a unique color, allowing you to identify it. You can also use the alt z, x, c, v, b to enable/disable the p0, p1, m0, m1, ball respectively.
  13. Shipped AND received mine today! Waiting for christmas to open it up.
  14. He's been traveling abroad and busy with some other things, I'm sure he'll be back around soonish.
  15. A fun spin on this question: What did your development environment look like in 2000, 1990, .. 1977!! I only go back a year so I can't participate :-)
  16. I'm new to this, caught the Stella dev bug while I was working on droid2600. OS: Ubuntu 10.04 Editor: Gedit, VIM Assembler: DASM Source control: Local CVS repository (yes, I'm a dinosaur...) Build: bash shell Test: Stella, Harmony cart
  17. I just got two more, did not expect to get them so soon after I placed the order. Thanks!
  18. I ended up ordering a heavy sixer with the AV mod and some cx78's to go with it. The 2600 looks brand new! The switches work flawlessly. Carts slide in perfectly! It works with my LCD TV. I'll post a couple pics before I pack it up for my nephew. Thanks for everyones input!
  19. Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm going to order one from Best. When it arrives I'll post a couple pics of it running on my TV for posterity.
  20. Not really an option, they are in another state. I can at least have his dad confirm there are composite inputs. I understand the potential issues with lag, but shouldn't the AV mod help with the crummy picture? That was my hope anyway.
  21. I've searched the forums and haven't found comments one way or the other about the AV mod Best does. It doesn't need to be perfect, my nephew isn't going to care about moderate ghosting or whatnot. Mostly I'm concerned about whether it is compatible with modern televisions.
  22. One of my nephews likes me to get out the Atari when he comes and visits. I'm going to get him one for Christmas, along with a Harmony cart. I don't really want to hassle with buying a unit in unknown condition, and I'd also like to make sure it works on whatever television they have at his house, which leads me to my question. I'm looking at the light 6'er with composite mod from Best Electronics. Anyone have any experience with those? Do they tend to be in good shape, both electronically and cosmetically? I'm not looking for a "deal", I just want to buy something that will look nice and I can be reasonably sure will work. Also, anyone know where I can buy an original box?
