Absolutely - but I have to show proof of concept first. We're doing low/no-cost marketing now and through the summer, and have a larger campaign scheduled for the fall & winter (when gaming sales are much stronger). I'll have a much better idea of how this is going to do in 3-6 months.
It also depends on the type of subscribers that we get from these campaigns. If I find that most of our subscribers are coming from "collector" sources - the other systems will probably be a little more obscure (Sega CD, Dreamcast, TG-16, etc) because my market research has found that "collector" customers would love to be able to rent these types of games. One of the biggest things that helped Netflix take off early on was offering weird, obscure titles. If we find our customers are from the "Average Joe" demographic, you're more likely to see us add systems like PS1, GB/GBC/GBA and Gamecube.
-
Hey guys - I'm the owner of Retroscribe, so I'm probably able to address the concerns

Yes, a fee for a "lost" game is $100. Of course, these are on a case-by-case basis. We understand things happen sometimes - but what's that old saying? If it walks like a duck...
I've worked a lot with my attorney to word the terms and conditions properly, and we also have a clause that reserves the right for us to bring theft charges to their local magistrate and/or turn them over to collections. Sure, many municipalities won't be much help with pressing charges, and it'll cost us a lot of money to send an account to collections (definitely a losing proposal for us) - but if you really want to risk ruining your credit or appearing in court over Mega Man, by all means, go for it!
To address the concerns about game availability - I came up with the "Top 3 Guarantee." The Top 3 Guarantee states that if we don't ship you one of the top 3 games in your queue, that month (or the next, at our discretion) is free. Now, if you have a 4-games-at-a-time package, we still only guarantee that one of them will be in the Top 3.
Yes, it will be a challenge once we grow that big to keep enough of all the "good" games in stock, but my software is pretty good for keeping on top of rental queues and letting me know how inventory is turning over. Once we get to be a certain size, we will look to acquire a large retro game dealer or bring on a strategic partner in a merger.

Thanks guys!
Dragonstomper - our marketing process has 3 stages:
1) (current) bootstrapping through forums and social media, picking up small #'s of subscribers to help iron out the kinks
2) (very soon) push for media coverage (gaming and traditional non-gaming)
3) (fall) big multi-platform marketing campaign - this is when i'll be opening up the checkbook
-
Yeah, ROMs are pretty accessible for most platforms. Fake Jordans are pretty accessible, too - but I still pay up for the real ones

It's a very niche market, it's an untested market, we'll see where it goes. I don't need 100,000 subscribers to be profitable, and no delusions of grandeur that I'll be on the cover of Fortune next year.
-
Your service would have to offer something I can't get at a local shop or flea market. Sadly, the only thing that applies are fan translations and hacks. That's a grey area for sure.
I agree - this service is definitely not for collectors, nor is it good for people who regularly put in the time to go out and find stuff cheap. We're after a much more casual demographic, which is, of course, much more expensive and challenging to reach.
We have discussed getting exclusive titles from indie NES developers, but I'm not going to make that kind of investment until we're much bigger, ya know?
-
Yeah nobody ever said it would be easy! The shipping cost is the sole reason that the lowest price is $12.99. It costs $2.09 each way to ship a 5-oz game. Assume an average of 2 rentals per month, I'm at $8.36 just in shipping cost for that month. If they rent 3 times in a month, I lose money.
That could be balanced out once we expand into PS1, Gamecube, GB and GBA games (much lower shipping costs).
We've been tinkering with an idea to limit rentals (ship once per month or 12 times per year) and charge much, much less. I can do 1 game for $7.99 in that model.
-
So I've pretty much been gone from most of the forums in my efforts to launch this new business, and here it is!
We are a subscription-based retro video game rental service, operating just like Gamefly or a Netflix DVD subscription. Our library as of right now consists of NES, SNES, N64 and Genesis with many more to come in later inventory expansions!
Check out a 30-day free trial here: http://retroscribe.com/index.php/free-trial-1.html
Thanks!

Hey all -
I am not a big poster here but really just trying to broaden my trading horizons a bit and get some of my "wanted" items knocked off the list.
I have a couple decent items for sale/for trade:
Power Strike Sega Master System complete w/ box & manual - $75 shipped to the USA
Sega CD RAM backup cart in box w/ cardboard tray (no manual) - $40 shipped to the USA
Everything else is listed at: http://www.linktothepastgaming.com
I have a HUGE wanted list, but I'm mainly focused on collecting any and all Disney games across all platforms. I only have about 50 so there's a LONG way to go! I also collect NES, SNES, N64, and Genesis loose carts that I had when I was a kid.
Feel free to send me your trade list, or I can link you to my "wanted" list.
Thanks!
Bill

Yeah I'm pretty good at cleaning carts - I use the Weiman's stuff and a Q-tip, it's definitely not the game. Wish it were!
-
I got a Jaguar really cheap today - cheap enough that I want to keep it! Problem is, I can't get it to work. I only have 1 Jaguar game and who knows if it's the game or the system.
I'm using an RF connection and a Genesis 1 power adapter. Red light comes on when I press the button with the cart inserted. The TV recognizes that there's an RF signal (I think) but I'm just getting nothing.
If it's really expensive to fix, I might as well just wait for a working one to come my way but if it's a reasonable fix, I'm all in.
I'm ready to ship and I'm ready to pay! Also have a ton of stuff available to trade for the service/parts.

God it just kills me to not buy that CMVS....free bump for you anyway!

Here are my bounty payments - I am only offering these payments for 1 DAY! If we can't strike a deal by 11:59PM EST Thursday night, I'll wait for another day. These are based on condition. If you're selling, I'm buying!
I also have a TON of trade bait. My eBay listings are down right now due to vacation settings, sorry!

Just ask, I'm willing to dig through my stuff to save a few bucks. I don't have any of the super-big-name titles but I do have a lot of good stuff.

Thanks for the heads-up man...I "think" I have a deal coming though! SOOOO excited

-
Hey all -
I joined here last year, posted a couple times, and then I disappeared. I know, sorry!
Anyway, I'm in the market to trade (preferably) or buy a Neo AES USA console and some games. Trade + cash is great, too.
Here's what I want:
Neo AES console with power (AV not necessary, I can use a Genny 1 AV I think) and at least 1 joystick controller. Some cheap USA games would be welcome as a package. I do not care one bit about cosmetics as long as it isn't totally destroyed. Must be in good working order, though.
I have a good bit of perfect feedback on NintendoAge (linktothepastgaming) and almost 500 near-perfect feedback on eBay (also linktothepastgaming). I have very little listed on eBay right now, but I do have some really nice higher-end stuff (and lots of middle and low-end stuff too haha).
Just a few examples:
All the PS1 stuff on eBay
Sealed Game Gear
Sealed Zelda Wand of Gamelon (CD-i)
Sealed Silent Hill GH PS1
Sealed Castlevania Symphony of the Night PS1
Panzer Dragoon Saga near-mint
Turbo Duo (no power cord...sad)
Turbo Express w/TV tuner (no volume...again, sad)
Mega Man 6 NES CIB near mint
Duck Tales 2 NES cart
Most of the good SNES RPG's
A few sealed Gamecube Demo Discs
Most of the high-end Gamecube games CIB
A few good CIB & sealed Game Boy & GBA games
Shining Force CD (Sega CD)
Lots of PS2 RPG's
Starfox Super Weekend Competition store banners (2 of them)
Also have most consoles. Maybe you want a DS or Wii for the kids?
I have (literally) thousands of games up for sale/trade for some Neo stuff, so if you want to work out a deal, please get in touch. Thanks!
-
Thanks for the link!
Quick question for you guys...how does the RF connection look with an HDTV (it's not a flat panel, one of the older HDTV's that came out, it's a heavy sucker!).
I know my NES w/RF looks like garbage, and I recently sold a TG-16 that won't even work on a newer TV.
Thanks in advance!

Hi all -
Very new to AA, regular poster & trader on NintendoAge and maybe 2 or 3 deals on DP. Also sell a lot on eBay.
I am interested in picking up a 2600 "starter set" really cheap or in trade. I figure this is the place to get it.
Looking to get the console with controller(s) and all necessary cables, along with a few popular/cheap games.
I had a reply to my CL ad offering a 2600 with about 20 of the common/cheap/popular games for $20. Of course we then got hit with a big snow and I couldn't drive that far away, so it was sold to someone more local
This got me interested in grabbing a set.If you want to trade, my available stuff is here:
eBay Store: LinktothePastGaming
Thanks!
Bill
