  1. these are pretty nice..do you have what it takes to make these into boxes? If so, I think the question in everyones mind is how much would you sell them for if you were to put them in the marketplace....

I would buy them if the price is affordable since we are looking at boxes for $1 games.....

Thanks, Chris. I'd have to look into a printer that could print a few of these up in low quantities at an affordable price. That may be a bit of a challenge, since they'd have to set up a die cut for the box shape, which costs a good amount of money. To do a small quantity with high set-up costs would be too expensive.

I'd love to take 4-5 of the best ones, to start, and do a full set that includes outer box, reworked manual, and cart label. But it'd need to be done cheaply and will, of course, take some time. Everything I have shown has been done low-res. I'd have to recreate everything high-res, even if it were just the boxes.

If anyone knows someone who could print up some of the boxes in low quantities for a good price, let me know.

    Thanks!

  2. Amazing work!

Man I really like those. Almost an Atari spin on the N* black box craze. It would be cool to do a black background poster with those oversize block characters as well.

Thanks, Ax! Yeah, a poster would be sweet. I may have to try that.

If you do a poster in this style, you'll have my money!

I'm seeing 3 or 4 of the large iconic sprites, with screenshots and copy underneath.

Either way, you've sparked my imagination with these!

Thanks, Rev! I like your poster idea. I had imagined a poster containing a representative sprite from each common game, with just the Atari logo centered at the bottom. But having just 3 or 4 large sprites may also be cool.

Another idea could be to have the Atari logo made up of a bunch of sprites, similar to the Unilever logo:

Not sure how that would look, though.

  3. Hi all,

Here's some new ones. Hope you like.

    Donkey Kong Front and Back:

    Centipede (Front only):

Making these is kind of fun. Many of these sprites make for some nice design elements.

    Again, any thoughts are welcome!

  4. When I saw the front, I thought that grey strip on the front(the one with the atari in it) was a big Atari symbol. I thought the side art was gonna have the same grey line(the middle line of the atari symbol) and the back would have been the other side of the symbol. I thought that would have looked cool with the Atari symbol wrapped around the front, side and back. On the back, you could have just moved the top grey-ish line(with the controller down to the lower left corner to make the other side of the atari symbol.

Just a suggestion, it looks amazing the way it is, not sure if my suggestion would help or hurt. Like I said, when I saw it, I thought the front was had part of the symbol. Amazing job! Keep it up, these are great to look at!

It's funny you say that, because that curve is actually part of a large Atari symbol. I like you're idea of having the logo wrap around the box. I'd have to mess around with it and see how it would look. I wanted the box spine to be black, and having the logo wrap around the spine would cause the spine to be a dark gray, and I'm worried the colors wouldn't pop as much. Especially for something like Space Invaders or Berzerk, where the green really pops against the black.

That's a really cool idea, though :) Thanks!

  5. Like them, but I've got a quibble as well, and I tend to see it in lots of places, including on a re-release for a more modern game system.

It's YARS' REVENGE, not YAR'S REVENGE!

D'oh! I always get that wrong :) I'll be sure to fix if I ever get these printed. Nice to see a fellow New Jerseyan on here. You're actually one town over from me!

  6. Is the lack of a screenshot on the back a conscious decision? I think they look good without example screenshots, but there's definitely enough space for one.

I was thinking along a slightly different line. For sprites that have them (which would be most of them), use a different position or animation frame on the back. For example, with Combat, you could have the diagonal position on the front and spines, and a straight cardinal direction orientation on the back.

For games that have multiple sprites (i.e. Pac-Man), I was considering putting the main character on the cover, and a secondary character (in the case of Pac-Man, a ghost monster) on the back. However, I opted for the simpler option. I'll revised the Combat box based on your suggestion and see how it looks. I'll also do a revised Pac-Man with a ghost monster sprite on the back. Probably have these up later today.

    Thanks for the feedback!

  7. Looking very good with the boxes!

    Two small quibbles:

    1) For Asteroids, I'd use a pic of a asteroid instead of a ship. The ship pixles look terrible and unreconizable from that angle, IMHO.

    2) Joust is based off a Williams arcade game, which is not mentioned on the back of the box. :)

Thanks, SoulBlazer. I agree that the angled ship sprite doesn't really work for the Asteroids box. I'm not sure if the asteroid sprite would work, since it's basically just a nondescript object. I was thinking maybe replacing the angled sprite of the ship, with the straight up and down version of the ship sprite. I'll try'em both and see how they look. As for the Joust copyright, I picked that copy up off a jpeg of a Joust box shot. I can always add in some copy re: Williams.

  8. I'm having fun with these, so I made a couple more. I also included some box backs as well:

    More thumbs up from me.

Does the E.T. sprite really have that dipping pixel between the legs? I'd never noticed that before. I know that E.T. wandered around nude, but the 2600 version of the character was just letting it all hang out! :D

Is the lack of a screenshot on the back a conscious decision? I think they look good without example screenshots, but there's definitely enough space for one.

I like the spartan look, though. It's a huge difference from modern games and their overdesigned front covers and absolutely packed backs.

Thanks, Gabriel! I thought about putting a screenshot on the back, but decided not to. I really wanted to keep the boxes as simple as possible, like Apple does w/ its packaging.

I agree that some work better than others. I've also been trying to use either the sprite color or box color from the original games, so I'm not just arbitrarally choosing colors.

I can't believe I hadn't thought of Bezerk! Now I have to make another one :)

    B

PS - that ET sprite is copied from a screenshots. I guess he was happy to see Elliot...

  9. I like 'em. They look sort of classy. They remind me of those Lego "Architecture" boxes, compared to standard Lego packaging. And I think it's okay if the pixel-art isn't immediately recognizable: It can be appreciated on more than one level. The only thing I'm not wild about is the color assortment when they are displayed side-by-side. But individually the colors look great. This would be good art for some kind of special-edition set.

Thanks, Ranthulfr. Like the Special Edition set idea.

As for the colors, I was going to make them all the same color, but I wanted each box to have its own personality, even if the designs are very similar. Oh, well, can't win'em all :)

  10. These are cool. Nice work. You know what might make great packaging for 2600 carts? Just a clear plastic storage case with a slot in the front for the game manual, and the front of the manual would double as the artwork for the case. Instead of a light cardboard box that gets crumpled/torn.

    Check this out:

If my Millimeter to Inches conversion is correct, then this box is 6" x 8.5". Bigger than a standard Atari box (5.5 x 7.5) but only by a little.

  11. Yeah, okay.. that took a lot of arm twisting. :) Here you go:

    post-6095-129507150782_thumb.jpg

Requires a set of 20 moves to open lol.

Anyway, doesn't that box look sweet? I think it comes unpainted.

I also found another box that might be suitable. It's easier to open and even when you open it you might not know the other secret. It has a second hidden compartment. Not sure the dimensions on this one since there's two compartments, but maybe one can hold the cartridge and one can hold the answer cards.

Man, that looks niiiiice. I like it. You definitely have room for everything now :) Are you going to put any labels on the outside, perhaps the game logo on the center square?

Thanks, GPS. That would be pretty sweet. I wonder if there's anything available that would work...I'll have to do a little searching.
