  1. I think the Space Invaders and Pac-Man ones are the strongest, because of how identifiable the characters are. The Space Invaders one is really striking.

I think the Combat one would be better if the tank faced to the side. It looks like a random assortment of pixels at first glance.

Yar's, despite being a character driven game, is probably the weakest of the batch. Even knowing exactly what the graphic was, it still looked like a random pattern. The overall design is fine, but the character just doen't look distinctive enough to work.

I think Raiders of the Lost Ark with Indy on the front would work. The Pac games are practically gimmies. Missile Command wouldn't work with this at all, or would be fairly difficult to make fit.

What would the backs look like?

Thanks for the feedback. Haven't designed anything for the backs yet. I'm aiming to keep them very minimal, like the front. I'll have to play around and see.

I agree that some of the characters work better than others. I was going to do the Combat tank to the side, like you suggested, but switched it up and used the diagonal. Figured it would be more dynamic. I'll try that one with a new tank image. Space Invaders is definitely my favorite one.

I think I can make Missle Command work. I'll have to look into that. Going to do one w/ Indy too :)

  2. I think the search is over!!! I've found a puzzle box that is inexpensive (under $25 bucks), comes in a kit form I'd have to assemble, and best of all LOOKS like my game! I know you're probably saying, "What the f---? How can it look like your game?", but trust me, if you seen screen shots of my game, the box looks similar. It's a "somewhat difficult" box to figure out how to open, but obviously I'd give the solution along with it.

I feel so confident about this box, in that it'll fit the game nicely inside and that everyone will like it, that I've already contacted the guy for a volume discount. I hope he'll do even a dollar or two I'd be happy.

I don't want to post pictures until I'm sure. Maybe I can have one box photographed with lid off, cartridge inside with foam insert to hold the cartridge securely.

    Awesome

    Glad it worked out!

Don't make us wait too long for the pics :)

  3. Scootiecat, there is a place in your profile where you can set your Location. As far as "D'oh level", that's a custom ranking that I think only subscribers, moderators, and possibly people with 5000 or more posts can change. Otherwise, your ranking description (below the row of joystick icons) is pre-programmed, depending on how many posts you have. However, at the top of some members' profiles is a Custom Status message (such as my "Syzygyst") that you can also set in your profile.

P.S. on my screen all that profile info appears to the left of each post. Are you mixed up, or is your display different for some reason?

I must be completely blind, because I have searched and searched all the member profile stuff and I don't see anywhere to set my location. Screenshot?

It's right below "Gender" in you profile (see attached).

  4. It seems like Atari 2600 common carts don't get a lot of respect, and I started thinking "Maybe it'd be cool to give them a new coat of paint." For a while now, I've been kicking around the idea of creating some very minimalist box art, that leverages the main sprite graphic from some of the older Atari games. This works best for the older games, since the sprites used in those games are more abstract, and generally one color.

    Some more:

    Dig-Dug

    Yar's Revenge

    Pac-Man

    Here's the Space Invader Cart:

And here's how the spines would line up on a shelf:

    JUST ADDED:

Crazy Climber (First one with 2-color sprite):

    Also:

    Missle Command

    Raiders of the Lost Ark

    Any feedback is welcome.

    Thanks!

  5. The arcade exclusive title Pac-Man Battle Royale has finally been released. If you haven't seen it, it's like Pac-Man CE but with only one mode, where the goal is to eat the other Pac-Men and win a majority of rounds. This should at least fill a little bit of the void some feel over the lack of classic-style games at the arcade. :)

This looks awesome. Imagine if this came out 30 years ago...that would've been some good times.

  6. Once you get 1,000 rep points, Albert will send you a bicycle for your daughter. If you don't have a daughter, he'll send you a photo of William Shatner for an extra 1,000 rep points.

And both of those are better than the autographed pic of Back in '89, which is what you get if you get on Albert's bad side.

  7. Yesterday I visited my local Goodwill. I walked over to the video game display, and quickly spotted Super Smash Bros Melee for GameCube for 4.99, so I decided to get it. Below it was MegaMan 8 for the PS for about 3 bucks, so I picked that up too. So, I get to the register, pay for everything, and then it hits me: I never opened the cases to check if the correct games were inside. So I open the Super Smash Bros case, and some Sonic game is inside. I tell the woman at the register, and she calls the manager over, who proceeds to tell me that they can't give me my money back -- just store credit! Unbelievable. So, I figure, no use fighting it, I'll just get something else of equal value and call it a day. There was slim pickins in the case, so I got SpongeBob The Movie for GC. Not what I wanted, but at least I could play it with my son. The SpongeBob game was only 2.99, so I also got a DVD of Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell Tour.

The woman at the register then gives me a new receipt and tells me I have 1 cent store credit. Great, thanks. I take everything, walk out to my car, and then realize I never checked the MegaMan case. So, I crack it open to find, instead of MegaMan, a f'ing Blues Clues game! FML.

I did make up for it , however, by finally purchasing Turbo for the 2600. :)

Public service message -- Don't be an idiot like me. When purchasing games from Goodwill, open the case first to be sure the correct game is inside!

TL/DR -- Went to Goodwill. Instead of walking out with Super Smash Bros Melee and MegaMan, I wound up with a SpongeBob game, a Blues Clues game, and a Black Sabbath DVD.

  8. As one poster pointed out, most games by Activision look very good.

I think Battlezone looks great, and is actually a pretty decent playing conversion of the the arcade game.

Some of the homebrews look really good: Ladybug and Toyshop Trouble come to mind.

Yeah, Ladybug definitely needs to be on the list. It's the total package -- incredible graphics, great music/sounds, and very fun to play.
