I was thinking along a slightly different line. For sprites that have them (which would be most of them), use a different position or animation frame on the back. For example, with Combat, you could have the diagonal position on the front and spines, and a straight cardinal direction orientation on the back. For games that have multiple sprites (i.e. Pac-Man), I was considering putting the main character on the cover, and a secondary character (in the case of Pac-Man, a ghost monster) on the back. However, I opted for the simpler option. I'll revised the Combat box based on your suggestion and see how it looks. I'll also do a revised Pac-Man with a ghost monster sprite on the back. Probably have these up later today. Thanks for the feedback! -B

Thanks, SoulBlazer. I agree that the angled ship sprite doesn't really work for the Asteroids box. I'm not sure if the asteroid sprite would work, since it's basically just a nondescript object. I was thinking maybe replacing the angled sprite of the ship, with the straight up and down version of the ship sprite. I'll try'em both and see how they look. As for the Joust copyright, I picked that copy up off a jpeg of a Joust box shot. I can always add in some copy re: Williams. -B

Here's a few more. Hope you like them. Bezerk: Asteroids: Joust: That's all for tonight. Hoping to get some glossy paper soon and make myself up a real comp of one of the boxes and one of the labels. -B

More thumbs up from me. Does the E.T. sprite really have that dipping pixel between the legs? I'd never noticed that before. I know that E.T. wandered around nude, but the 2600 version of the character was just letting it all hang out! Is the lack of a screenshot on the back a conscious decision? I think they look good without example screenshots, but there's definitely enough space for one. I like the spartan look, though. It's a huge difference from modern games and their overdesigned front covers and absolutely packed backs. Thanks, Gabriel! I thought about putting a screenshot on the back, but decided not to. I really wanted to keep the boxes as simple as possible, like Apple does w/ its packaging. I agree that some work better than others. I've also been trying to use either the sprite color or box color from the original games, so I'm not just arbitrarally choosing colors. I can't believe I hadn't thought of Bezerk! Now I have to make another one B PS - that ET sprite is copied from a screenshots. I guess he was happy to see Elliot...

The Random BIG AX BOX of Crap - SOLD OUT!
Brian O replied to the.golden.ax's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Watching this all unfold makes me regret not getting in on this. I'm game for the BOC sequel. -B -
I'm having fun with these, so I made a couple more. I also included some box backs as well: Space Invaders Back: Pac-Man Back: And some others: E.T. Box (Front) E.T. Box (Back) Indy 500 (Front) Indy 500 (Back) I pulled the game description copy from either existing boxes or manuals. Couldn't find any game summary copy for Indy 500, so just threw some dummy copy in. -B

The Mega Man homebrew :- http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/146735-mega-man-2600-demo-game-binary/page__view__findpost__p__1787307 Also, Halo 2600 has a double-sized ending boss, I believe. -B

It's probably for the best. You don't want half the guys on this forum knowing your location anyway. -B

Thanks, Ranthulfr. Like the Special Edition set idea. As for the colors, I was going to make them all the same color, but I wanted each box to have its own personality, even if the designs are very similar. Oh, well, can't win'em all -B

Check this out: Linky If my Millimeter to Inches conversion is correct, then this box is 6" x 8.5". Bigger than a standard Atari box (5.5 x 7.5) but only by a little. -B

Man, that looks niiiiice. I like it. You definitely have room for everything now Are you going to put any labels on the outside, perhaps the game logo on the center square? -B

Just added some more. See first post in this thread. -B

Thanks, GPS. That would be pretty sweet. I wonder if there's anything available that would work...I'll have to do a little searching. -B

Thanks for the feedback. Haven't designed anything for the backs yet. I'm aiming to keep them very minimal, like the front. I'll have to play around and see. I agree that some of the characters work better than others. I was going to do the Combat tank to the side, like you suggested, but switched it up and used the diagonal. Figured it would be more dynamic. I'll try that one with a new tank image. Space Invaders is definitely my favorite one. I think I can make Missle Command work. I'll have to look into that. Going to do one w/ Indy too -B

Thanks, Ax! Yeah, a poster would be sweet. I may have to try that. -B

The Official "Thrift finds" Thread

The Gemstiks are great, but I have heard that Kraft sticks are quite cheesy....... -
I must be completely blind, because I have searched and searched all the member profile stuff and I don't see anywhere to set my location. Screenshot? It's right below "Gender" in you profile (see attached). -B

It seems like Atari 2600 common carts don't get a lot of respect, and I started thinking "Maybe it'd be cool to give them a new coat of paint." For a while now, I've been kicking around the idea of creating some very minimalist box art, that leverages the main sprite graphic from some of the older Atari games. This works best for the older games, since the sprites used in those games are more abstract, and generally one color. Combat Box: Space Invaders Box: Some more: Dig-Dug Yar's Revenge Pac-Man Here's the Space Invader Cart: And here's how the spines would line up on a shelf: JUST ADDED: Crazy Climber (First one with 2-color sprite): Also: Missle Command Raiders of the Lost Ark Any feedback is welcome. Thanks! B

That deserves a rep point.

I'd love to help, but I just sold my electron microscope. EDIT: Did a Tin Eye search and nothing came up. Can't really make out the letters on the image, so tough to search for.

Star Wars - sit down cockpit version.

This looks awesome. Imagine if this came out 30 years ago...that would've been some good times.

And both of those are better than the autographed pic of Back in '89, which is what you get if you get on Albert's bad side. -B
