You need ResEdit to recreate the resource forks... -
Yes - enom will apparently look to honour any domain name the may have been lost through the apparent demise of 250free and 250host. However, they are not able to obtain any data that may have been hosted...

Don't know if it'll help, but thought I'd let you know. I gather from the Atari-Forum page this morning that you're going to go with the backup from Dec.4 - sounds like it's probably the best option right now. It's horrible when companies that provide a service that people rely on (such as airlines and web hosts) go into liquidation as it usually happens quickly and leaves a lot of people stuck in limbo and out of pocket.. At least you're not stranded 5,000 miles away from home, though. I've sent a request to enom.com to clarify if there is any truth in this statement...

Superb work SSB! I will check it out when I'm back from the Netherlands this week. -
Right, here's my attempt:
-
That wouldn't allow anyone to see their PM's or search by their own posts or see posts they've read etc... @Simbo: Good work man! That pretty much sums it up for me. I'll get the backup we have back online and made active today. If by some miracle we get Decembers data back, I'll see what can be done to make it available in some way (we have unlimited storage after all...) First, I will try and chat with LiquidWeb to see if I can get a backup from them
-
Ok it appears I can't end the poll myself. So as of now the results are: Option 1: 48% Option 2: 16% Option 3: 36% So unless we hear for sure that 250host are no more, we'll wait a week before restoring the 4th December backup.
-
I fear you could be right Simbo. I had noticed today that their domain had been flushed from the Google cache (was there yesterday). Also since it went down, DNS wouldn't resolve the IP address of the domain... There are reports of people who have paid for another year's hosting in December and now they have no web presence for their business. Anyway, ever the optimist, I'm still happy to wait for another week unless we get some solid evidence that we're never getting our data back. BTW Simbo, any news for me? PM Me...

Hi Jeff, To be honest, it would have been nice to have purely to support others. I've been involved with a few threads on AF (some from you I think?) and just relying on my 'Mac history'. Owning one would have allowed me to try stuff out properly for people. That was all. I wouldn't want to trump the other guy if he has a real use for it. -
Possibly - Once I have it up and running, I'll look at the practicalities of this. A good suggestion... Like I said, I'm happy to go with the majority. Each option has it's own merit and no option is better than the next. I just want to provide the right service to satisfy the demands/requirements of the AF community.

OK - to get the 4th December backup online in itself isn't too hard however it's time consuming and there are considerations: 1. All posts after 4th December will be lost. 2. Any Moderator work like deleting spammers through December will be undone (not a big problem) 3. The FireBee section created towards the end of December will need recreating (with the correct posts moved) 4. Any PM's sent between users throughout December will be lost. 5. My User account will need to be recreated again (it was deleted by an admin by mistake when they were trying to make an alteration to it for me) 6. Until we know for sure that 250Host are gone and never to return, there is always that feeling that maybe we can get the most up to date data. We are making the assumption that the backup is 'stable' (We won't know for sure until it is restored by the host provider). The backup has been uploaded to the backend - I just need to give the 'nod' to the host provider to restore it. The backup was taken just before Silver Surfer repaired my deleted account (long story, won't go into it here) - so once it's online, I will need to jump in with the backend admin password to redo that work. Then I will need to set all the forums to read only. There is no magic switch for this, it's something that has to be done for each forum (and sub forum). Some people may log in during this time and post stuff - fair enough, these posts will be lost if we get a more up to date backup from 250host. What I don't want to do is spend a day getting all this done only to find 250host return the next day and we have to go through some of the process again... But will do whatever the majority vote for. I plan to keep the poll going until tonight and then close it (probably around 11pm GMT). If option 1 is the favourite, I do nothing until next Saturday at which point (assuming I've not heard any news from 250host, I will go for the next favoured option from the poll). If any news regarding 250host comes to light then it will surely be posted here and on the blog. Can I ask everyone to continue the vigilate work and see if you can uncover what's going on with 250host? Sterling work done by some people so far. Many Thanks to you all.

Oh Crap... -
@Simbo: I've Been sending messages to Brian after I tracked him down via Facebook. I've had absolutely nothing from him at all. Frustrating really as I just want to know the prognosis. If 250host is dead, never to return then I just need to know. Makes planning actions difficult when there is no indication of the scale of a problem. I also rang that number and it went straight to an answering system. Maybe they'll return my call? @WongCK: Silver Surfer had an online chat with the company 250host are(was?) registered with yesterday. I will upload the transcript to the blog page for everyone (got home late from work yesterday so no time to do it then). Bottom line was he couldn't get much information from them. @Jeff: the backup we have is a full site backup created by CPanel X, everything *should* be there. We'll know for sure when it's restored by hostpapa.

Thanks for the offer but hosting is sorted (go to www.Atari-forum.com for details of the story so far). It's been a nightmare, I was given admin privileges from 4th December and after sorting out some decent cloud based storage, wrote scripts ready to start automatically harvesting backups - first one cron'd up for NYE when I envisaged little usage. Of course the site died on 27th December... Gutted!

OK - easy enough to create a poll. Here it is - Get Clicking!

If a poll feature exists, would be a good idea...

For networking I use NetUSBee with STing (pretty easy to get going). As you say, there are a few files to ping about and without the network your 'easier' options are: 1. NULL modem cable between TT and a PC. Use a terminal program on the PC - under Windows, HyperTerminal works a treat. Then use a terminal program on the TT (I liked Freeze Dried Terminal myself). Then initiate a ZModem transfer from Hyperterminal to push files to the TT. 2. PARCP with a parallel cable. Client and server exists for Atari and PC. 3. UltraSatan with HDDRIVER gives you the option of creating a partition that is DOS and TOS compatible. Just copy the stuff over that way. However, you will need a way to transfer some stuff over to get this going (HDDriver and probably BigDos) Once you have the network going, then you have more options for file transfer. I use a program called Newsie (essentially a News, Email and FTP client). I quite like the FTP interface and this is how I transfer stuff now. I have yet to find an FTP client for the Atari that supports recursive directory transfer so I am having to zip up folder structures first, transfer then use STZip to unpack it at the other end - not ideal as the Atari is a lot slower at decompressing, but it works. -
On reflection, I don't think the short term nature of all this really warrants so much work especially when I start to think about Mod actions and PM's etc....
-
That sounds possible...

I'm canvassing opinion as I am undecided. I have a full backup from the 4th December uploaded and ready to restore on the new host. However restoring this will mean losing all changes and posts made through December. The old host provider *may* get back online - in which event, I can obtain a full latest backup to restore. However if the old host re-appears after I have restored the 4th December backup, things get messy and I'm not totally sure on the feasibility of migrating posts, user stats, site changes, mod actions, PM's etc (probably not very feasible if I'm honest). So I put to you all three options: 1. Sit tight and give 250host another week to appear online. 2. Restore the old backup and get it online asap. 3. Restore the old backup but set all users to read only so that the forum can be harvested for information. If we go for option three we agree to keep it in that state until we know for sure whether 250host have gone to the wall or not. If anyone has any better idea, put it forward.

NetUSBee is the way forward. 100% compatible with Ethernec drivers plus a pair of USB ports.. I use one on my ST (will go on my Falcon when it comes back repaired), it's tiny compared to the EtherNec solution. Nothing strange about the name either: Net (obvious) USB (also obvious, although Zaxon also builds this without the USB ports) (B)ee - represents the 'Bee' mouse cursor displayed by GEM when it's busy... Just to give the name an 'Atari'-esque sound. -
Any good ST games, with distribution rights well known?

I don't think Atari will be coming to get you to be honest... -

ST Format Cover Disks can all be downloaded here. Another fine repository for PD libraries is the Little Green Desktop -
Yes I had seen that one - very amusing! :-)
