  1. Hey, Melinda, hit me up.

  2. I see black and silver and I want to paint it beige.

    1. retrorussell

No colors anymore, I want them to turn beige..

    2. digdugnate

      i look at my board
and see i've painted it beige

  3. A community may just be an object to some, but it is an object filled with people. A "fuck you" to the community is a personalized "fuck you" to everyone in it.

    1. x=usr(1536)

Amen.  I'll accept someone taking their time to figure out how to fit in, but that "fuck you" is an instant ticket to GTFOtown as far as I'm concerned.  Nobody wants shit neighbours.

    2. CPUWIZ

      Fuck you both.

  4. Rubbermaid works well for me.  How do you store yours?

    1. x=usr(1536)

Stack the tubs inside of each other, cap off the top one with a lid.  Stack the lids.  Put everything in the rafters in the garage / attic.  Toss a Harbor Freight tarp over them to act as a dust sheet.  Don't use moving blankets, etc. - things like to make homes in them, and if they get wet they'll attract mildew and / or mould.

This is honestly about the best way I've found to do it.  Oh, and depending on the type of bins you have it may be more advantageous to store the stack on its side rather than vertically if you're going the garage or attic route.

Sterilite boxes with gasketed lids and latches in my basement.  Keeps moisture and dust out while keeping that vintage 80's and 90's smell in!

  5. Support "Right to Repair."

I fully support the right to:  Open it and try to repair it myself, only usually doing slightly more damage to it, before I take it to someone who can repair it for me...

      OLD CS1

As someone who uses "retro" or "classic" computer platforms and has been using the same Sony Ericsson phone since 2009, I am fully supportive of my ability, both permissive and practically, to repair my own and others' equipment.  That should not be taken away from us for these ridiculous and nebulous claims, especially by companies under the guise of "protecting their intellectual property."

    4. x=usr(1536)

      @OLD CS1: exactly.

Incidentally, for anyone else reading this: the reason why both my wife and I feel as strongly as we do about right to repair has a lot of reasons behind it, but the big one involves John Deere requiring one of their techs to go on-site with a tractor or other agricultural machine after certain parts have been replaced and reactivate it in the field (no pun intended).

Here's the problem: no tech, no start.  Or, the machine will start, but won't perform the functions it was designed for beyond 'drive it to where the tech will look at it' - or it'll be hobbled in some other way that makes it Not Useful or Usable.

This is utter bullshit, because John Deere is now screwing with the food supply.  Everything they're doing to farmers aside (and, believe me, I am not saying that to be dismissive of what they're doing to farmers; but I do want to concentrate on this one giant core issue that affects anyone who eats), the food on your table may not be able to get there if they can't get a tech out in time.

Apologies for reposting this link, but please check it out.  It's not just a code repository; it provides a decent synopsis of the problem as well as external references that go into better depth than I can here.

  6. Thank you. You know who you are. Even if you do not think you are special, you are to me.

@adam242 Longcat is not mine.  She is all of ours.  https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/longcat

Now, that said, I lost my boy Hermes about eight years ago to hepatic lymphoma. We fought it for two and a-half years with regular chemo and daily pills before he finally succumbed. I promised I would fight as long as he would fight. His loss has been one of the hardest in my life, and it took me many years before I could sleep well again.

I know your pain and I hope you are well.  This is one of my best and favorite photos of my puppy cat.

    3. adam242

Hermes was a very handsome boy! I am so sorry for your loss. It never goes away.

Annie was a rescue, 7 years old. We had almost five good years together. She went less than a month after being diagnosed with an abdominal tumor.

  8. This NSFW picture sums up how I used to feel about Sun and Solaris.

Then think if they got that computer.

    3. ventrra

@OLD CS1 I had wondered. The only Sun computer I've seen in person was an old SpacStation which looked a lot like a beige pizza box.

@ventrra Yup.  I have seen and used many of those, myself. Rather un-stylish :)  I still have a SparcStation 20 sitting around here, and an IPX.  Funny little machines.

  9. Turning dilemmas into dilemmonade, using the unexpected outage of both VDSL lines to test out the LTE fail-over. No hurricane needed.

  10. The landlord sent out a crew to repaint the house. They have a sprayer which sounds like someone holding down the fire button on Parsec but the damned thing will not explode. Which is what I want it to do at 0800 on a friggen Saturday.

yea if you have much more than a single car garage, GFL lifting it without the ballast springs and or tearing something up

    3. OLD CS1

      OLD CS1

The busted spring can be seen here, but I only noticed afterward. You can see the pulley track shift, hear all the stress on the door track and the opener motor.  The opener automatically tries to open again after closing from a failed open.

    4. Osgeld

yea don't do that much more it will twist the panels and your in a world of money

One good thing about the pandemic, I get quicker call backs from customer support people working from home than I did when they worked in the office...

  15. Does replacing old Atari 2600 cartridge labels with new, quality reproductions substantially alter any value they have?  Bear in mind I am not banking on my 250-some carts for my retirement, I just want them to look nice.

I'd basically agree that you leave Rare ones alone, and only replace the more common ones;  But also if it's something you plan on keeping;  Then make it look the way You want it to look...Just know it could be worth less if you decide to sell.

    3. sirlynxalot

Agree with others, from a collector standpoint, if its a rare expensive game, I think sticking on replacement labels could even devalue it compared to leaving the ripped or missing original labels.  On the other hand, if its like a $5 game, then I don't think replacing the label will impact the $5 people will pay for it one way or the other.

Bunch of really thoughtful answers.  Thank you!

Excellent read, loved it! Will contribute my first experience with the Amiga in that thread before too long.  :)

  16. An open request to sellers about floppy disks: DSDD disks are neither impossible nor expensive.  There is no reason to use HD disks for Commodore, Atari ST, Amiga, or other computers with DD disk drives.  You are doing a great disservice to your customers by selling them disks which have a higher probability of failure.

  17. Am I the only one bothered by how "classic" or "retro" computers and systems, which you can get your hands on today, are spoken of in the past tense?

I'm not sure why, but I'm reminded of an interview I once saw with a young game designer who wished he could "play video games with a real joystick, just to see what that was like."  I wanted to say, "You know, you can still do that ..."  It's as if he was wishing for the experience of riding a horse-driven Hansom cab in nineteenth-century London.

    3. digdugnate

my poor attempt at humor aside, im like @GoldLeader- I guess I never thought about it!   ..but now that you've made the observation, i'm going to notice this all the time now.  GEE THANKS CS1

  18. Sadly becoming more and more difficult to maintain software for the Solaris 8 installation on my AMD K6-III+ server. That and it takes up so much space and puts out more heat than I like. This has been a tough little box and refuses to die, but time to replace with a Solaris 11 VM.

  19. I will never receive my order of new Commodore 64 key caps :(
