  1. Just a quick "boo hoo, woe is me," moment of self-pity so I can get past it.  Been sick the past few days (no coof, just a run-of-the-mill sinus infection,) so I have been wanting to do a little programming on my down-time.  But my back also decided to tweak, so now it hurts to sit at my desk chair or pretty much any useful position, and my laptop has something wrong with it that keeps cutting off the screen backlight.

    Already replaced the laptop screen, not good so it is something with the motherboard so I found a full replacement which should be here tomorrow.  I am on the mend, only experiencing fever at night, normal temp during the day, and my back is starting to feel better.  So, there, got that off my chest.

  6. Nothing worse than coming up with a really clever solution to a one-shot problem, then needing to repeat it later and forgetting how you did it.  Documentation?  Who documents when they are under a time crunch?!

      Looks like fun!   Like when I used to go to the Rocky Mountain Pinball Showdown every year!  I'd get to play some pinballs I'd only seen on PlayStation,  Plus play original Mr. Do! and Omega Race cabinets, drink beer, meet devs, say Hey to Ben Heck, Walter Day, Billy Mitchell, etc., check out rare carts...Good Times!

      Now, that said, I lost my boy Hermes about eight years ago to hepatic lymphoma. We fought it for two and a-half years with regular chemo and daily pills before he finally succumbed. I promised I would fight as long as he would fight. His loss has been one of the hardest in my life, and it took me many years before I could sleep well again.

      I know your pain and I hope you are well.  This is one of my best and favorite photos of my puppy cat.

      Hermes was a very handsome boy! I am so sorry for your loss. It never goes away.

      Annie was a rescue, 7 years old. We had almost five good years together. She went less than a month after being diagnosed with an abdominal tumor.

  9. Rubbermaid works well for me.  How do you store yours?

      x=usr(1536)

      Stack the tubs inside of each other, cap off the top one with a lid.  Stack the lids.  Put everything in the rafters in the garage / attic.  Toss a Harbor Freight tarp over them to act as a dust sheet.  Don't use moving blankets, etc. - things like to make homes in them, and if they get wet they'll attract mildew and / or mould.

      This is honestly about the best way I've found to do it.  Oh, and depending on the type of bins you have it may be more advantageous to store the stack on its side rather than vertically if you're going the garage or attic route.

  10. Sadly becoming more and more difficult to maintain software for the Solaris 8 installation on my AMD K6-III+ server. That and it takes up so much space and puts out more heat than I like. This has been a tough little box and refuses to die, but time to replace with a Solaris 11 VM.

  11. Simply put, AT&T is abusing its bring-your-own-device (BYOD) program to force people into 5G. Have a working and compatible 4G phone? You can pound sand, buddy.

      I have Consumer Cellular (uses AT&T network), and it's been really acting up lately. My phone has 3G and LTE. Sometimes I have to switch to 3G for it to work. I think I have to buy a 5G phone for it to work right. It's only like a 2 year old phone and was $250 I think (Nokia 4.2 unlocked).

      I fully support the right to:  Open it and try to repair it myself, only usually doing slightly more damage to it, before I take it to someone who can repair it for me...

    3. OLD CS1

      OLD CS1

      As someone who uses "retro" or "classic" computer platforms and has been using the same Sony Ericsson phone since 2009, I am fully supportive of my ability, both permissive and practically, to repair my own and others' equipment.  That should not be taken away from us for these ridiculous and nebulous claims, especially by companies under the guise of "protecting their intellectual property."

    4. x=usr(1536)

      x=usr(1536)

      @OLD CS1: exactly.

      Incidentally, for anyone else reading this: the reason why both my wife and I feel as strongly as we do about right to repair has a lot of reasons behind it, but the big one involves John Deere requiring one of their techs to go on-site with a tractor or other agricultural machine after certain parts have been replaced and reactivate it in the field (no pun intended).

      Here's the problem: no tech, no start.  Or, the machine will start, but won't perform the functions it was designed for beyond 'drive it to where the tech will look at it' - or it'll be hobbled in some other way that makes it Not Useful or Usable.

      This is utter bullshit, because John Deere is now screwing with the food supply.  Everything they're doing to farmers aside (and, believe me, I am not saying that to be dismissive of what they're doing to farmers; but I do want to concentrate on this one giant core issue that affects anyone who eats), the food on your table may not be able to get there if they can't get a tech out in time.

      Apologies for reposting this link, but please check it out.  It's not just a code repository; it provides a decent synopsis of the problem as well as external references that go into better depth than I can here.

  13. tfw a 16GB SD card actually is just less than 16GB (raw and unformatted,) and a 16GB image taken of another 16GB SD card will not restore to it.

    1. Keatah

      Keatah

      Mmm, yes, always issues like that with SD cards. Each SD card can potentially be different from the next. HDDs too, to a lesser extent.

      Backup 101 says to only restore sector-by-sector images (if that's what you did) to the same piece of hardware. Best to stick with high-level file backups when going cross devices.

      @ventrra Yup.  I have seen and used many of those, myself. Rather un-stylish :)  I still have a SparcStation 20 sitting around here, and an IPX.  Funny little machines.
