  1. In short: TeeSpring ("Spring") yeeted my licensed TI-99/4A Home Computer apparel store because I had two items which included the word "Atari."  In full, these items were "AtariAge exclusive" and were actually de-activated items.  Spring's legal department is so gun-shy that not only was my store deleted, but my account has been deactivated which means that I cannot log in at all, even to make new or review old purchases.  I have contacted Spring multiple times and their response has been too-bad-so-sad, you used the A-word and can F-off.  I made complaints to the BBB and two California consumer agencies, all of which Spring has ignored.

    TeeSpring's seller service philosophy is "fuck you."

      Maybe they were drunk? ‘Dongle’ sounds like an idea a drunk person would come up with.

  3. Simply put, AT&T is abusing its bring-your-own-device (BYOD) program to force people into 5G. Have a working and compatible 4G phone? You can pound sand, buddy.

      Is it real 5G or their own fake 4G version of it?

      I have Consumer Cellular (uses AT&T network), and it's been really acting up lately. My phone has 3G and LTE. Sometimes I have to switch to 3G for it to work. I think I have to buy a 5G phone for it to work right. It's only like a 2 year old phone and was $250 I think (Nokia 4.2 unlocked).

  4. Nothing worse than coming up with a really clever solution to a one-shot problem, then needing to repeat it later and forgetting how you did it.  Documentation?  Who documents when they are under a time crunch?!

  5. I thought being laid up for a week would be a good opportunity to get some work done without distraction. I have been too groggy to even think crookedly, forget about thinking straight enough to do anything.

  8. I have been testing out this app for managing my retro game collections.  Unfortunately, as I use a de-Googled device, I am only able to freely use a single console (Atari 2600.)  It has some short-comings, like no provision for label variations, but otherwise seems pretty good.

  9. While the Gemini protocol and complement browser looks interesting, I am not yet convinced there is anything more spectacular here than what could be done with simple HTML and Lynx.

  10. Been a while since I got to decommission one of these.  This is a CSU/DSU for a 64kbps frame relay for a point-to-point connection between a main office and a co-located server system.  This was used by a government office up until just a few years ago.

      That's one hell of a find.  Has to be late '70s / early '80s.

      FWIW, I am aware of one government (local) entity still using SNA natively in a couple of places.

      What's funny is whatever they replace it with usually ends up being way more open and exposed to the world as well as having such speed that it takes almost no time for a bad guy to set up bad things... they'd be better off with closed systems on dedicated trunks than running around in the current interwebz we have set up these dayz....

  11. Every time I drop off at electronic waste, the number of CRT TVs out there is surprising, but I am absolutely amazed at the one or two projection TVs.

    1. jaybird3rd

      jaybird3rd

      I've seen fairly new TVs thrown in the garbage even though they only needed minor repairs.  One had a bad power supply board; a little work and less than $50 in replacement parts brought it back to life.

    2. OLD CS1

      OLD CS1

      @jaybird3rd I have picked up a couple of 32" TVs on the street. They will not pick up TVs curb-side anymore, so that is good for me. Unfortunately, the dump does not allow carry-out.

      Stack the tubs inside of each other, cap off the top one with a lid.  Stack the lids.  Put everything in the rafters in the garage / attic.  Toss a Harbor Freight tarp over them to act as a dust sheet.  Don't use moving blankets, etc. - things like to make homes in them, and if they get wet they'll attract mildew and / or mould.

      This is honestly about the best way I've found to do it.  Oh, and depending on the type of bins you have it may be more advantageous to store the stack on its side rather than vertically if you're going the garage or attic route.

      As someone who uses "retro" or "classic" computer platforms and has been using the same Sony Ericsson phone since 2009, I am fully supportive of my ability, both permissive and practically, to repair my own and others' equipment.  That should not be taken away from us for these ridiculous and nebulous claims, especially by companies under the guise of "protecting their intellectual property."

    4. x=usr(1536)

      x=usr(1536)

      @OLD CS1: exactly.

      Incidentally, for anyone else reading this: the reason why both my wife and I feel as strongly as we do about right to repair has a lot of reasons behind it, but the big one involves John Deere requiring one of their techs to go on-site with a tractor or other agricultural machine after certain parts have been replaced and reactivate it in the field (no pun intended).

      Here's the problem: no tech, no start.  Or, the machine will start, but won't perform the functions it was designed for beyond 'drive it to where the tech will look at it' - or it'll be hobbled in some other way that makes it Not Useful or Usable.

      This is utter bullshit, because John Deere is now screwing with the food supply.  Everything they're doing to farmers aside (and, believe me, I am not saying that to be dismissive of what they're doing to farmers; but I do want to concentrate on this one giant core issue that affects anyone who eats), the food on your table may not be able to get there if they can't get a tech out in time.

      Apologies for reposting this link, but please check it out.  It's not just a code repository; it provides a decent synopsis of the problem as well as external references that go into better depth than I can here.

      Now, that said, I lost my boy Hermes about eight years ago to hepatic lymphoma. We fought it for two and a-half years with regular chemo and daily pills before he finally succumbed. I promised I would fight as long as he would fight. His loss has been one of the hardest in my life, and it took me many years before I could sleep well again.

      I know your pain and I hope you are well.  This is one of my best and favorite photos of my puppy cat.
