"John Wick: Chapter 4" was pretty good. Do away with JW3 and we have a good series. (Although, I admit the Continental siege was pretty bad ass in 3.)

I had Mortal Kombat and I remember renting a Sega CD unit and Night Trap. Guess that made me part of the problem. Feel like I have to watch Demolition Man for a healthy dose of Leary after seeing that.
There are websites that use AI to remove things from images and fill in what's behind them. You could use one of those and make a nice glossy print to cover it up, Or you could put an AA sticker over it.

Important news for anyone who uses the PayPal Business Debit Mastercard with a linked bank account: there is a huge change coming on September 12, 2023. I have two PayPal Business Debit Mastercards linked to two different business bank accounts as backup funding. Backup funding allows transactions to be pulled from a bank account when the funds are not in your PayPal account. Essentially, it turns it into a real debit card, but with 1% cash back.
However, the latest PayPal legal update includes this line:
"The Backup Funding Source linked bank account feature of the PayPal Business Debit Mastercard will no longer be available." Reading the updated cardholder agreement, sure enough, the backup funding source is not listed.
Read all of the PayPal legal updates here.

When enough small business owners complain about money being auto-drafted from their account for their own frivolous spending. Too bad they didn't just add an off switch and make everyone relink their account as acknowledgement. As usual though they cut off their nose to spite their face. Now you have to dedicate capital, removing some flexibility.
-
@bent_pin Definitely going to change my habits. Means I have to update a lot of accounts to use my bank card, but PayPal does not get processing fees from my purchases anymore. Oh, well.
-
Be careful linking accounts directly to your bank card. The easiest way to lose money and the hardest to recover from is a fraudulent bank card charge. With a credit card you have legal recourse to reject a charge, whereas a bank card transaction gives them the money and you're left with a lot less options to recover it. Also, it's not your security that matters but that of the company who has your card number on file.

127.0.0.1 door mats are stupid. The saying is, "There's no place like home." This mat would say, "There's no place like localhost." Additionally, having it to greet people, or be a warm welcome upon return to your home, is silly because no visitor could ever reach your 127.0.0.1 and you would have never left.

A tale of two VDSLs: one bonded, one not. The not bonded has a bad modem, built into a firewall, the configuration of which is not compatible with its replacement so a ton of manual copying has to occur. The second line of the bonded has gone shitty, but a tech will be out tomorrow.
In the meantime, instead of glorious 80/10 (load balanced,) I am at 22/1.2. Oh, the humanity!!

@_The Doctor__ Nah, two completely different modems. One is an Actiontec bonded C2000A, the other is a DrayTek Vigor 2860 with built-in xDSL. One line bonded, the other not, the bonded has a bad second channel from the CO, and the Vigor's modem is putting noise on its line. I probably have an unnecessarily complex layout, but I have site-to-site VPNs, multiple VLANs, LTE fail-over, yadda yadda. I just let stuff get out of hand.
Actually, yes, I was on (IIRC) Broadband forums wayyyy back when I worked for the local ISP.

After Windows 10 October update: "Hey! You know that search bar you deliberately turned off in the task bar? Well, it's so fucking awesome that we turned it back on for you, and we're going to put random trending search results in your Start menu! Rejoice!"
I cannot "NOPE" hard enough.

I only use Windows where I absolutely have to, and in all other places I use Linux, with the rare time that I need macOS, I have that around too (though I really hate Finder).
Windows is bad from a user point of view for crap like what you mention. macOS is shit because they kill compatibility randomly, and did things like obsolete all of your 32bit library in one fell swoop...
-
@leech One of my friends is a Classic Mac collector and fan. Killing compatibility upon OSX 10.4 is what turned him away from Apple.
-
@SlidellMan Yeah, I wasn't an Apple fan back then, but do have some retro systems. The first thing they did with the last PPC supported release (10.4.11?) was that they removed the classic mac mode thing, and just kept it as an emulation thing you could install outside of it... Should have been the first sign of nonsense.
When I got a mac from work, I started using a program called Flavour for theming, and then one of the OS upgrades completely broke it, then Flavour2 was promised for a long time. By the time I realized it'd been released, my OS was upgraded again to completely break it and the author gave up on it. Guess Apple didn't want people to be able to do theming at all...

CloudFlare's human verification is such garbage I miss ReCaptcha. I was doing some research on why I keep failing human verification and found a few relevant topics at CloudFlare's website... which are behind human verification.
Beep boop beep.

First order of 16TB drives direct from Western Digital were damaged because they just threw them into the box to ship. Had to wait and trade up to 18TB drives, the condition of which I may never know because the box is either lost or stolen. Maybe this is a sign that my 27.6TB is plenty enough space and I just need to make do.

@x=usr(1536) I ordered four WD Red Pros. They are pretty much on-par with the Golds. The Golds are heavier, louder, hotter, longer MTBF, and five year warranty. The Red Pro have three year, but the performance is pretty close to the Golds. For the purposes of a home-office NAS which does Plex, two iSCSI LUNs, and regular file shares... well, these will be just fine. I have four 10TB red Pro drives in, now.
-
I ordered a 4TB and a 10TB red plus from amazon and WD already had the 4TB packaged in the plastic holder inside the box. Amazon slipped a plastic bag over the 4TB I bought from amazon and it tested fine (read/write/read whole disk 3 times + checking smart data errors stayed none). 10TB was direct shipped to someone else so no idea how it was packaged, but I assume the same way.

For anyone in the IT space, do not use Microsoft's ReFS on an Intel RAID controller. At this time, I have dealt with five incidents of drive header/metadata corruption with fully intact files. Two incidents on the same server (all of its hardware was replaced after the first incident.)

Help! I need followers on Rumble so I can test live streaming for upcoming VCF-SE! I have been using Twitch, but I keep getting hit with copyright because of background music at events or incorrectly identified music playing on games -- my Dragon's Lair streams apparently trigger for some band which did some kind of cover. It takes me an hour or more to go through an entire day's stream to clear out the claims.
In order to stream, Rumble requires I have five followers or pay. I promise, I am not trying to be cheap and I do want to support alternative tech, but I need to test to make sure everything is going to work before I start dumping money. So, if you would be so kind, please follow my OLD CS1 channel here: https://rumble.com/c/c-3233296

I went ahead and plonked down the $10 for this month. It tested out very well. I just need to work on graphics and OBS scenes. Also found out you cannot use more than one Microsoft LifeCam Studio cameras on the same system (wtf?) The only shortcoming I see is that you can live stream as one of your channels, but not chat. So, when I chat, I am not chatting as OLD_CS1, but rather as my parent account. Not much of a bother for VCF purposes as I will be too busy with the exhibit to be in the chat.

Holy shit. After just getting nailed for almost 9% tax, which is not even my local tax rate, I am done with eBay for person-to-person sales for obsolete computer parts. Fuck. This.
-
I havent used eBay for a long time because the fees are just insane. Most my games are probably worth 10-20 dollars. After PayPal takes their cut, eBay is taking a solid 15% of that based on how they determine the final value fee. Shipping, i would absolutely have to charge for to make it worth it but man, $6 net profit on a $10 game is not a good feeling

I am reminded today of a young man whose life was unnecessarily ended by his own hand. I was both saddened and angered by this news as working with him I saw someone with talent, dreams, and unrealized potential. He left behind a son to whom, in life, he was a dedicated father.
If you are having thoughts of ending your life, injuring yourself, or simply cannot see a future for you in this world, please, please, seek help. You are never as alone as you think. You have friends and loved ones who are waiting for you, some desperate that you cannot find your way. No one in your life is better off without you. Where those close to you may not be able to help fully, a professional can, and there are many out there who care and will help.
It is easier now more than ever to reach someone who will help. Just call or send a text message to 988. Someone is there every hour of every day, for you. All you have to do is make the call. Asking for help is not weakness; it takes strength to reach out, and you have it in you to take that first step.
-
@GoldLeader I am sorry for your losses. A brother is tragic enough, but there is no reason, none whatsoever, a 19 year-old should feel the need to end a life which has barely begun.

I spent a lot of time yesterday troubleshooting why recursive queries against my internal DNS server were not working. Then I found it was unable to populate its root hints. After many hours of troubleshooting, trying new configurations, packet captures, and compiling a new version, I figured out the issue was my ComCast uplink. This morning I got a call from a tier-two tech who told me the SecurityEdge firewall had spontaneously enabled itself. He turned it of and BAM! Everything works, again.

I spoke with PayPal support today regarding the upcoming removal, on September 23, of the back-up funding source for the PayPal Business Debit MasterCard*.
I was told I was not the only PayPal customer objecting to this new policy and for similar reasons. I am hoping the cacophony of user complaints will stop this policy change. I know PayPal makes money on my transactions, even with my 1% cash-back. But this change will eliminate 99% of my PayPal transactions.
* With a back-up funding source, you do not need a PayPal balance to make purchase with the card, it will draft from your funding source. This essentially turns the card into a pass-through debit card, earning you cash-back and allowing a little more distance from your bank for security. As well, if you accept payments via PayPal, those funds are instantly available to you via the card. This is has huge utility for business. (And personal, just never let them know you are using it for personal purchases.)

I tell you what! (What? I just told ya!) It is not easy to get a perfect sample to use for keyboarding out TI music. The audio between the computer and the keyboard is not the best, and the sample quality of the keyboard has a ceiling. Not to mention TI likes 440Hz for A3, rather than 442Hz for A4 per Casio, which makes tuning a little more difficult.
One niggle about the Casio SK-series is there is no pass-through for the line-in sampling input (nor the microphone input,) so you fly blind (or deaf) when sampling. There is some bleed-through if you have the volume up and shove the bud deep into your ear. But the snare sound when sampling obviates doing so.
I was considering whether to use the laptop to generate the 9919 tones or real iron, but real iron is very noisy on the output and authenticity is not necessary for my purposes.
Having fun getting into the swing of things.
