  1. A community may just be an object to some, but it is an object filled with people. A "fuck you" to the community is a personalized "fuck you" to everyone in it.

Amen.  I'll accept someone taking their time to figure out how to fit in, but that "fuck you" is an instant ticket to GTFOtown as far as I'm concerned.  Nobody wants shit neighbours.

Destructive little buggers, ain't they.  Just make sure they stay away from your car, they LOVE wiring harnesses.

  4. Holy shit.  After just getting nailed for almost 9% tax, which is not even my local tax rate, I am done with eBay for person-to-person sales for obsolete computer parts.  Fuck.  This.

I commented on Twitter last week that eBay looks more and more like Monsieur Thénardier:

Charge 'em for the lice, extra for the mice.

Two percent for looking in the mirror twice.

Here a little slice, there a little cut.

Three percent for sleeping with the window shut.

I havent used eBay for a long time because the fees are just insane. Most my games are probably worth 10-20 dollars. After PayPal takes their cut, eBay is taking a solid 15% of that based on how they determine the final value fee. Shipping, i would absolutely have to charge for to make it worth it but man, $6 net profit on a $10 game is not a good feeling

  5. I am reminded today of a young man whose life was unnecessarily ended by his own hand. I was both saddened and angered by this news as working with him I saw someone with talent, dreams, and unrealized potential. He left behind a son to whom, in life, he was a dedicated father.

If you are having thoughts of ending your life, injuring yourself, or simply cannot see a future for you in this world, please, please, seek help. You are never as alone as you think. You have friends and loved ones who are waiting for you, some desperate that you cannot find your way. No one in your life is better off without you. Where those close to you may not be able to help fully, a professional can, and there are many out there who care and will help.

It is easier now more than ever to reach someone who will help. Just call or send a text message to 988. Someone is there every hour of every day, for you. All you have to do is make the call. Asking for help is not weakness; it takes strength to reach out, and you have it in you to take that first step.

Thank you for this!   It may seem obvious,  but it's good advice.  Today I learned that,  unfortunately my cousin (a mere 19 years old) killed himself last week...I also had a coworker on the same shift as me, kill himself in 2013,...Not to mention my own brother in 2018 (doctor assisted)...

    2. OLD CS1

      OLD CS1

@GoldLeader I am sorry for your losses.  A brother is tragic enough, but there is no reason, none whatsoever, a 19 year-old should feel the need to end a life which has barely begun.

      I think maybe so!

      Let's keep it going!!

  7. Just a quick "boo hoo, woe is me," moment of self-pity so I can get past it.  Been sick the past few days (no coof, just a run-of-the-mill sinus infection,) so I have been wanting to do a little programming on my down-time.  But my back also decided to tweak, so now it hurts to sit at my desk chair or pretty much any useful position, and my laptop has something wrong with it that keeps cutting off the screen backlight.

Already replaced the laptop screen, not good so it is something with the motherboard so I found a full replacement which should be here tomorrow.  I am on the mend, only experiencing fever at night, normal temp during the day, and my back is starting to feel better.  So, there, got that off my chest.

  10. Been a while since I got to decommission one of these.  This is a CSU/DSU for a 64kbps frame relay for a point-to-point connection between a main office and a co-located server system.  This was used by a government office up until just a few years ago.

That's one hell of a find.  Has to be late '70s / early '80s.

FWIW, I am aware of one government (local) entity still using SNA natively in a couple of places.

What's funny is whatever they replace it with usually ends up being way more open and exposed to the world as well as having such speed that it takes almost no time for a bad guy to set up bad things... they'd be better off with closed systems on dedicated trunks than running around in the current interwebz we have set up these dayz....

  11. Every time I drop off at electronic waste, the number of CRT TVs out there is surprising, but I am absolutely amazed at the one or two projection TVs.

    1. jaybird3rd

      jaybird3rd

I've seen fairly new TVs thrown in the garbage even though they only needed minor repairs.  One had a bad power supply board; a little work and less than $50 in replacement parts brought it back to life.

    2. OLD CS1

      OLD CS1

@jaybird3rd I have picked up a couple of 32" TVs on the street. They will not pick up TVs curb-side anymore, so that is good for me. Unfortunately, the dump does not allow carry-out.

Those who don't like Microsoft may say so. I had a drive fail in a server array which caused three virtual machine VHDs to corrupt, as well. I've been able to clean all but one and it's fighting every step.

    2. OLD CS1

      OLD CS1

Not sure what you mean, but I have two bits of advice both taught and learned. You want to touch the pad, not the component if you can avoid it, but you can also touch the solder. If everything is clean then it will flow and stick where it is supposed to. Heating a board before working can help with stubborn solder joints on large grounding planes or particularly wide paths which act as heat-sinks making it damn near impossible to flow the solder. I have never done this and it would seem to m...

It's been discussed in various threads what and why. It would be a curious thing to see if anyone would fund our hobby, maybe under the guise of "marital support." I got to visit this tough little five year-old boy this weekend and he's doing very well, considering.

I am glad I am rarely in pain or need of anything like that. I cannot take it, it makes my heartbeat extremely irregular so I have to stick with plain old aspirin.
