  2. First I would like to give credit where it is due. AA member 0078265317 brought this to our attention so I feel its fair not to take all the credit. This Ebay seller claims he has a new Atari 5200. Sounds great besides the possibly high asking price. A little part of you always ask if its true especially if it looks not quite new. Anyway its an active auction now so we can see what it will go for. I would like to pose these questions to all AA members. The box looks ruffed up but better than most is this a hint that it could be a scam? What gets me is look at pic 3 notice how you can see the cardboard of the outer part of the box sticking out as if the middle part was pushed in. So then you ask is this age warp on the cardboard,Or am I am just being finicky? Once there was a seller with a "new" snes boxed. However the snes had fading from the sun, the bottom was yellow. Yeah very new there. Your oppinions please. May it go to a good home regardless. P.S. I wonder what his asking price is?

eBay Auction -- Item Number: 2507692223691?ff3=2&pub=5574883395&toolid=10001&campid=5336500554&customid=&item=250769222369&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]

    Interesting!

I would say that the box APPEARS to be nice, new and possibly unopened.

    The "staples" seal sounds legit.

However, is it worth the $700 Buy It Now he has set, or whatever reserve he thinks it is worth?

    That's the real question.

I say wait. See if it reaches the reserve ever.

Ask yourself if owning it would feel the "same" as, for instance, this one:

eBay Auction -- Item Number: 3102884428441?ff3=2&pub=5574883395&toolid=10001&campid=5336500554&customid=&item=310288442844&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]

Unopened is a hard one for me . . . what do I do with it? Am I buying it to never open it, or do I just want the "fresh" feel of a new unit?

Very interesting, I'll be following that auction!

  3. Excellent, professional purchaser.

    Great communication, fast payments.

Realistic expectations, but yet a first-rate collector.

Would recommend to sell to without hesitation!

  4. So wait, this is to play 2600 games on the Colecovision? Never knew there was such a thing, very cool.

Yup, I just bought one from Yurkie, actually, and have been enjoying it on the refurbished ColecoVision that he built for me, as well!

Only trick with the expansion unit, as far as I can tell at least, is that you can't have it attached when you want to play ColecoVision games - - you have to detach it in order to get the unit to recognize the ColecoVision games.

The unit has joystick ports on the front, too, so you can use your favorite ATARI-compatible joysticks, too, not the Coleco ones . . .

    It's a blast, for sure!

  5. Well, I have heard back from my translator, who was able to provide information on TWO of the signatures, but not the third. Here are some details from the email:

    ###

". . . managed to decipher two of the signatures including the one you already knew!

However, both of them are female.

The first signature is, as you know, Watanabe Miki but this particular spelling for Miki (there are lots!) is definitely female so unless your designer is a woman, I'm afraid that it's not the same person.

    Watanabe%20Miki.jpg

The second signature is Isabella Nagano. The first part of the signature is in katakana which is exclusively used to write non-Japanese words and was fairly easy to read. It was the family name Nagano that I had to have some help with! I got lots of hits in Google (in Japanese) but nothing really when I added Nintendo - except Princess Isabella!

    Isabella%20signature.jpg

I'm sorry but the third signature completely stumped both of us! However, because I can't resist a challenge, I shall probably go back to it and I'll let you know if I have any flashes of inspiration!

I also, just for my own interest (and no charge!), translated the cover of the User's Manual.

    User%27s%20Manual.jpg

You'll notice that I've tried to match the original characters wherever possible and also included katakana (non-Japanese) and hiragana (Japanese) versions."

    ###

So, there we have it, or as much information as I will probably ever have regarding this item! :)

    •
    • I do not know if the Nintendo designer Miki Watanabe (game credit details on GameFAQs) is a man or woman, however if they are a woman, that is likely their signature!

    • Princess Isabella . . . well, maybe someone was having fun that day, and signed it Princess Isabella? Could be!

As for the third signature, I may find out someday, but my interpreter was stumped, and will keep casually asking his friends until maybe someday someone can pull something out of it! All very interesting, none-the-less, and was fun to research!

Stan, it's all your for $170, plus shipping, which can be USPS Parcel Post to save on time and money, or Priority Mail, if you can't wait to get hold of it! :D

PM me up, and we can work out the details . . .

  6. I think I must have an addiction - - I love winning the random "grab bags" where you don't know all the contents of the games and parts!

I just won this collection at shopgoodwill.com that appears to have 5200 carts, 2600 carts, possibly Colecovision carts, and is that a SNES cart on the far left, too?

    sa8868610124-g7.jpg

I have no use for the 5200 joysticks, but the rest of the 2600 sticks and consoles will be excellent for my budding 2600 refurbishing and selling business.

Ahh, this hobby feeds some addiction for sure - - the promise of hidden treasure? The gambler in all of us?

    :D

  7. Do you think you might do $100 on it not including shipping?

Thanks for your continued interest, Stan! :)

I have engaged a Japanese translator experienced with handwriting and signatures to interpret the remaining two names on the package. He is busy, and has great, low rates, but as a result I have to wait until later in the week to hear back from him.

I'm going to wait to hear back from him before I sell.

I am definitely still motivated to sell, but to me, $100 feels too low for this to go for.

New in box, sealed, Buy-It-Now on ebay is nearly $400, so that means in "real world" prices, about $200.

This one is opened, but has an interesting provenance and history. I would feel more comfortable at $170, plus shipping, pending the nature of the final signatures, of course - - if Miyamoto or someone is on there, all bets are off! :D )

  8. Looks like an SNL skit with Jeopardy and Sean Connery...

I'll take Magna Cox for $500 Trebek!

    Oh YEAH!!

I totally had to go look that up, and find that section of the skit (full transcript available here):

"Alex Trebek: Yeah, it was a trick question, Mr. Connery. Why don't you pick a category?

Sean Connery: I've got to ask you about the Penis Mightier.

Alex Trebek: What? No. No, no, that is The Pen is Mightier.

Sean Connery: Gussy it up however you want, Trebek. What matters is does it work? Will it really mighty my penis, man?

Alex Trebek: It's not a product, Mr. Connery.

Sean Connery: Because I've ordered devices like that before - wasted a pretty penny, I don't mind telling you. And if The Penis Mightier works, I'll order a dozen.

Alex Trebek: It's not a Penis Mightier, Mr. Connery. There's no such thing!

Nicholas Cage: Wait, wait, wait.. are you selling Penis Mightiers?

Alex Trebek: No! No, I'm not.

Sean Connery: Well, you're sitting on a gold mine, Trebek!"

AH, excellent, some good Friday humor to start the day!

  9. Hi! Welcome to AtariAge! :)

If you still have them, I'd be interested in - -

    Dragon Riders Chronicles Pern

    EGG Elemental Gimmick Gear

    EVOLUTION 2: FAR OFF PROMISE

    Gauntlet Legends

    Grandia II

"Half of eBay prices" you say?

That would mean realistic, but not crazy, prices, and about what things seem to generally go for around here. I appreciate that!

How about $45, shipped, for the above titles?

    - - pending shiny, unscratched discs and all the inserts, of course . . .

Let me know if that would work for ya!

  10. I would think your target audience here might offer more for any rare games then 2600.com, or Ebay, I have no experience selling YET so maybe I am wrong. I just think selling here might have the advantage of getting you a better $$$ with the benefit of it going to someone who will really appreciate it.

I think the "better" money is on eBay, where sellers can charge larger prices to unsuspecting purchasers.

Here, if you intend to sell, you have to expect the extremely savvy collectors that haunt these halls to berate your price lists, and knock you back down to about half of eBay or online etailer prices.

    However - - I actually like that! :D

I view the "profit margin reduction" as a cost of going DIRECT to a buyer who WILL really appreciate it. Besides, after eBay fees, PayPal fees, possible returns and the "cost of doing business" online, you are barely above what you probably could have gotten here, anyways!

I think here you generally get a way higher-quality object, though.

  11. Did you contact him to salvage the transaction? :curious:

Good question, but nope. It was around Christmas/New Years and I just wrote it off as I didn't want to deal with any more disappointment or buggering with the post office sending the crap back. Customer service and the entire buying experience just plain sucks today and I can hear the excuses now: "it's the only one we had in stock" or "we clean our games that way to avoid the least common denominator complaining about them not working" or whatever. Fact is, I thought Atari2600.com usually was a higher end trading experience. 10+ years ago anyway, before the ownership change. Outside of this transaction, only other thing I bought was the Bugs Bunny 2600 prototype CIB and that was great, 'cept the quality of the label isn't anywhere near what Al has been doing the last few years.

It's entirely possible that JC would have offered to refund my money after sending the stuff back. But that's not the point. Shouldn't have had to deal with any adversity like this in the first place and I'm just getting tired of telling people that should know better, how to run their business.

    Amen, brother!

Be honest, keep the quality high, the prices reasonable, and treat them like you want to be treated yourself - -

    - - That's how I sell, and I wish it was the same all around!

eBay and other places have made it hard to sort the wheat from the chaff nowadays, though. :(

  12. I am missing a power switch "extender" for one of my Texas Instrument TI99 4/a units.

These little guys look like this:

    console_01a.jpg

And, they pull right out! (Picture taken from this interesting website)

If anyone has one, loose, I would greatly appreciate getting hold of it!

Wrapped up in foam, USPS First Class, should be cheap, cheap to send.

How about $5, shipped? PayPal gift payment?

    Thanks!!

  13. Okay, I have found someone that can translate at least ONE of the names on the package - -

    IMGP0323.JPG

    This is "Miki Watanabe"

He was, and still is, a character and set designer for Nintendo, and is credited with a variety of first-tier releases:

    Miki Watanabe on GameFAQs

The person who translated it couldn't read the others, as they are signatures, and somewhat hard to read!

I have asked around a few other places, too, so I may have more answers soon . . .

Very interesting! Looks like it was probably signed by Nintendo designers, then, not FAMITSU editors!

Still available, by the way, no committed takers yet!

  14. This is one of my favorite video reviews - -

It is an "unboxing" of an eBay purchase, and I get a kick out of how breathless and excited the lady is.

It was filmed by "Mr. Shakey-Cam," so bear with it.

The video of the unit in action comes towards the middle of the video, after she gets it home and fires it up:

(She turns it on somewhere around 3:25, and tests it in the dark at around 4:45)

    Another (written) review is here:

  15. So this will play any Game Boy game correct? As far as I know all Game Boys will play any games, PAL, NTSC, whatever because they all run on the same batteries. If I'm able to play my games on it, I might want it. What's its visibility like in darkness?

It will indeed play ANY Game Boy game - - PAL, NTSC, etc.

I used it for several years with my collection of Game Boy carts, as well as with my "Multi-Cart" (don't tell Nintendo :) )!

Visibility is great in darkness. Not like "Game Boy Advance SP" bright, which is what I play the most now and why I am letting this go, but it is VERY enjoyable in a dark room, airplane, etc.

It actually has TWO "on" modes, one without the backlight, and one with the backlight. That way, if you are in a well-lit situation, you can use the unit without the backlight and save batteries.

Yes, it uses standard AA batteries.

    Do you read Japanese, Stan?

My buddy who I got this four years ago from SAID it was signed by Famitsu editors, however, I have no way to verify it!

Are those names legible to anyone?
