    THANKS so much for looking!

  2. Thanks for all the replies =)

Ok, I took the game to a guy that fix old tvs and is a lot better them me soldering.

He looked at the capacitor and said it's fine. And the vr, even bad soldered, it's working.

My DC adapter is that one you can buy for 5 dollars and you can change voltage and polarity, + -, - +, and from 3v to 12v. So I guess this is not the problem.

And yes, I'm setting it to + - 9V, just like Atari original dc adapter.

So, maybe now the problem is the IC, the guy said he can replace it for me but I don't know which one of the tree I should replace.

Here is a pic and you will be able to see the number of each one wrote. I'm not able to find those in my country, at least, not with those names, so.. any one can link me to a place selling those ?

    dsc010082.jpg

Your problem SOUNDS like the RIOT, the top-most IC in your picture.

I recommend purchasing from Bradley Koda at BEST ELECTRONICS. His website can be intimidating to some, but here is a link to a parts list there:

    http://www.best-electronics-ca.com/2600_Tech_Tips.htm#based

Scroll down and look for "Atari I/O Chip CO10750 $8.00"

He's a solid guy to buy from - - look around and grab some more goodies while you are there!

Alternately, you can buy an entirely NEW board to swap into your case from him for $35, the "Atari 2600A NTSC/US Populated Motherboard CA015911 $35.00"

    Cheers!

  3. Well, without a Minestorm manual, you might as well just throw the whole thing away.

But to save the environment, I'll take it off your hands. I'm running a free Vectrex recycling service. Just send it to me and I guarantee to keep it out of the landfill.

This offer also applies to Magnavox Odysseys and select other consoles. PM me for a list. ;)

This fellow near me keeps trying to sell this Magnavox Odyssey:

    http://denver.craigslist.org/vgm/2151594144.html

I bought a few ATARI off him, decent young guy, just cleaning out some odds n' ends that were in his girlfriend's dad's garage.

I'd be happy to work something out as a "go-between" / "courier" via PayPal and then get it shipped to you, if you were interested.

I told him the price was a bit high, but maybe it's acceptable to you . . .

    -a2a

I'm sorry, but I'd meant the one from 1972 that uses cards sort of like cartridges. Thanks for the offer, though. :)

No worries, I figured as much, just being social - - it's what I told the fellow, too, that the first year ones are the only high-value ones.

I just wanted it for funs, but he saw something on eBay (curse you, over-priced eBay sellers!), and started somewhere in the $80-range, thinking he had gold, GOLD, GOLD!.

    Each week it creeps down a bit more . . . soon, $25 . . .

  5. Sold to Stan for $40, which included $5 for shipping. I threw in $1.75 of insurance for "peace of mind."

Just for clarification, and to protect my reputation on this forum that I dearly love, here is my pricing logic for that original $55 number so that you all don't think I am trying to defraud anyone!

Digital Press lists it as $30 loose, no instructions:

    http://207.234.147.108/DP/cmf/game.cmf?gameid=24316

    As does good old atariguide.com:

    http://www.atariguide.com/2/291b.htm

A $68 price at nintendosforsale.com that seemed a little high, but reflective of the top end of the market, was here:

    http://www.nintendosforsale.com/subterranea-atari-2600-p-12106.html

As well, an old Buy It Now from 11/07/2010 was noted in the Google cache for videogamepriceguides.com of $54.00 (link to cached page provided, search webpage for "Subterranea" to jump down; cache will not last forever, prob not be findable by next week . . .)

    http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:GrCBBSTC9pcJ:www.videogamepriceguides.com/atari-2600/+subterranea+atari&cd=136&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=firefox-a

And, then, yes, the pricing list at atari2600.com says "$26.44" for cartridge and manual. Honestly, I consider that list outdated, although it does say "Updated October 2010." As far as I can ever tell, that list appears to be based based off an older pricing guide I once found in text form at atariguide.com that was last updated in 1998, with data from 1996.

The atari2600.com pricing appears to have been based on this one, and then lightly spot-updated since then?

    http://www.atariguide.com/help/AtariAuctionPrices.txt

I wish that I could find pricing on atariage.com, but everyone is afraid to put real prices in their postings, and never seem to update what they sold for! The only thing I could find was a sale in January 2010 for the empty box of around $51.53:

    http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/156839-fa-minty-atari-2600-subterranea-box/page__view__findpost__p__1925443

Which only helped me to gauge general "demand" for SUBTERRANEA.

So, demand level, plus I figured $30-$35 for just the cart based on all those links, a great set of instructions was worth at least $10, and then the extra pack-ins and brochures, plus my "quality assurance" and expert packing and shipping brought me to $55.

Anyways, just wanted to get that all out there and re-assure the community.

    ;)

  6. This may upset someone who was hoping to keep it "secret," but a large lot of 2600 games with TAPPER in it just popped up on shopgoodwill.com:

    http://www.shopgoodwill.com/viewItem.asp?ItemID=7274979

Apologies to anyone who was hoping to keep that one quiet, but we are all watching anyways, so hard to believe that it could be kept on the "down low" for long . . .

    :P

The bid is now at $34.99, but it ends on the 15th, so I expect it will continue to climb.

Good luck to any and all that jump in on that!

  7. Awesome copy so 55 dollars is what it sells for on ebay I suppose?

No, actually it sells on eBay for $5.50:

eBay SUBTERRANEA Auction: eBay Auction -- Item Number: 1206684051441?ff3=2&pub=5574883395&toolid=10001&campid=5336500554&customid=&item=120668405144&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]

    ;)

No instructions, no pack-ins, unknown quality, and "economy shipping" (?) . . .

In all seriousness, pricing is based off an extensive sale history from here and other sites, stretching back to 1996, as well as adjusted for the additional pack-ins, condition of the cartridge, and current demand.

As well, I prefer to just start listings with a solid number. The ambiguous listings with "email me an offer!" always leave me wanting more . . .

    :)

  9. The important thing is WHERE can I get them?

Well, eBay it appears (of course, I shoulda' guessed!):

ATARI Nikes on eBay: eBay Auction -- Item Number: 1705855249391?ff3=2&pub=5574883395&toolid=10001&campid=5336500554&customid=&item=170585524939&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]

I know from time in New York and LA that small-run sneakers like these are very desirable by collectors. You think WE are crazy for cartridges of THRESHOLD or SUBTERRANEA or other-such? Sneaker-freaks FREAK for new, small-runs of certain brands.

  10.

Wow, that's cool, basically an in-store advertising unit - -

    "TRY IT

    Move the Joystick

    Press Fire"

What does it demo when you jiggle the stick?

And the best part of the "attract mode" - - "IT EXPANDS THE AMOUNT OF RAM MEMORY FROM 120 TO 6272 BYTES" Ha!

Nice. I have really been enjoying the Starpath games via the Harmony cart. Fun to play DRAGONSTOMPER, the only "good" RPG for the 2600, really! The FROGGER release is classy, too.

Can't wait to hear what these promos might have . . .

  11. I have 4 non-working Atari 5200 joysticks. I am wondering if someone would be willing to repair one of them for me at a low cost. I am disabled and live at the poverty line, so I can't pay much. I could pay $15.00 + return shipping. Would someone out of kindness do this for me? Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your joysticks and financial issues, Scootie.

Bradley at BEST ELECTRONICS has the nicest breakdown of "why 5200 controllers go bad" and he offers a GREAT re-manufactured set of parts to make them whole again:

    http://www.best-electronics-ca.com/cx52_j.htm

Bottom line - - you can rebuild it yourself, OR Bradley does a "core exchange." You give him an old, busted joystick, and in exchange he sells you a freshly reconditioned 5200 joysticks with the upgraded parts for $21 per joystick (link jumps you to his pricing scheme):

    http://www.best-electronics-ca.com/5200.htm?#gold

Now, you have 4 joysticks, and so I estimate if you trade him 4 "cores" and order one or maybe two reconditioned joysticks from him, you are sitting pretty at around the $15 you want to spend, maybe a tad more . . .

Whaddya think of that? I suggest you email or call Bradley and strike up a conversation. He's the real-deal for ATARI parts!

  12. Halloween in a Telesys cart? :ponder:

I wonder if the Starpath "demo" tapes are just the "preview" versions of the games that can be found on their regular release tapes. In any instance, still a very nice find!

Whew, how DOES one carefully dump or process the old Starpath tapes?

As an old audiophile, I know how finicky those little bits of iron oxide clinging to a thin film can behave, particularly after sitting for so long!

It would be great to dump them, though, for use in emulators and the Harmony carts . . . who in the community is trustworthy and does that sort of work?

They might indeed just be "previews" of the retail version, but it would be neat to be able to compare and contrast!

  13. I'd call those 'eaters' because the labels look half eaten. Still, this is an AWESOME price. Somebody grab it!

    Yes, SOLD!

    I will take them.

    PM SENT!

Thanks, ianoid! Heh, "eaters" - - yeah, it certainly looks that way! I wish COMMAVID had made more durable labels!

Supergun, thanks for your interest! I responded to your PM and I'll get these shipped promptly for you on Monday!

    More goodies listing soon . . .

    -a2a

  14. Been doing some New Year's cleaning and found some COMMAVID-brand ATARI 2600 cartridges that I am willing to part with (the first of many New Year's resolutions . . .), COSMIC SWARM and ROOM OF DOOM:

    IMGP0080.JPG

CAVEAT EMPTOR - These COMMAVID carts have very poor labels, however the cartridges *physically* are perfect!

    • Good, thick PCBs that fit tight in the console
    • No corrosion, good looking un-worn contacts
    • Nice, smooth and responsive springs on the side posts
    • Boot right up and play just fine!

I recognize that these labels could be a bummer to some, so as a BONUS, I am including another "wounded warrior," SEGA's game THUNDERGROUND:

    IMGP0101.JPG

    • $30 for the set
    • PLUS cost of USPS Priority Shipping from 80401 and insurance (will try to use small box)
    • PAYPAL gift payment only
    • Will be bagged, dessicant pouch added, and surrounded by bubble wrap
    • Will ship on MONDAY so it doesn't sit around somewhere all weekend
    • Feedback should be left for me, and I will do the same for you (big group hug, wahoo!)
    • Thank you, but I won't split the set

  15. This has, most likely, been covered before.

Is there anyway to repair paddles controllers that get shakey. I have 2 pair and both shake a lot.

This is annoying and prevents me from playing paddle games.

By the way. I just dug out my Atari from 25 years ago and found I have a rare cart.

    Crazy Climber!

Other cool/rare games I found were Subterrenea, Cryps of Chaos and Private Eye.

Best instruction I have seen, and he sells the parts to get it done with, is Bradley over at BEST ELECTRONICS:

    http://www.best-electronics-ca.com/cx30_paddle.htm

He spent literally YEARS looking for the best re-manufactured option for the potentiometers.

I have ordered from him a LOT, and highly recommend him.

  16. Hello all.

I've been lurking for around a year now, building up knowledge on all things atari and slowly building up a collection. I ran into a deal (or so I thought) on a vader unit yesterday and since playing it, I've noticed an issue that I hope you guys can help me with.

When using port 1 the unit works great. However, if you use port 2 with the paddles, strange things happen. You can turn the paddle about 7/8s of its radius with no movement on the screen. Once you get past 7/8 to the right, the colors on the screen go nuts and there is still no movement.

I have tried numerous pairs of paddles and all of them have the same issue. Even does it on non-paddle games.

Does anyone have any ideas on what could cause this and where to start digging on the motherboard? I should mention its a rev. 10 boad with all of the IC's soldered.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    -Harry

Those boards with the soldered ICs are a huge PAIN!

But more than likely, it may be the RIOT chip (the one closest to the game slot).

You could also try replacing the power regulator first as that would save a lot of time before diving into to desoldering chips

I'll agree with Benz - - sounds like the RIOT.

The single-port behavior with just the paddle is unusual, though.

The RIOT fails in mysterious ways, however, so I don't doubt it, but some other follow-up questions - -

    - - can you play other JOYSTICK games with the second controller and get glitches, or is it only PADDLES?

    - - Does it happen consistently with other PADDLE games?

    - - Does the game give up completely when it glitches, or can you keep playing it?

If it does come to soldering, those soldered ICs are indeed tricky to desolder, but - -

    - - use lots of flux,

    - - don't leave the heat on the solder points too long at any one time,

    - - get some "de-solder braid" from Radio Shack and don't be afraid to keep trimming off the end of it for a fresh piece and sucking up solder with it!

and you'll come through fine! Put an IC socket on there while you are at it, and future RIOT swaps (unlikely to need again, but . . . ) will be easier!

    Good luck!

    -a2a

  17. About $50 - 70ish I'd say. It's a very nice set. They are not super rare, but people who like them are rather fond of this edition over the standard 2600. They have a very cool look, don't they?

    AX

I am a very big fan of the fake burl-wood myself.

I have kept my six-switch SEARS TELE-GAMES for personal use, and moved out a bunch of other sixers, including a few heavies, in favor of the TELE.

    Nice set, great find!

  18. Wow, very cool - - thanks for sharing! I look forward to seeing that documentary!

I like your setup, by the way. Very clean and organized. A personal goal of mine, for sure.

The "ATARI Service" sign is neat - - what's the story behind that?

    -a2a

  19. Hi all

I have a 2600A vader that I bought new. It's been stored, dead, for years. I tried to fix it once before, years ago, with no luck. I dug it out again and thought i'd give it another try.

Givens: I've resoldered the power jack and the switches, cleaned the switches and card slot.

I've read the Atari service site repair stuff but since I don't have a test cart-not much help there.

When I turn the console on with a game inserted, all I get on the tv screen are white horizontal rolling lines, moving from the bottom to the top of the screen. Turn the switch off- I get snow- back on- the lines-that's all, no color, no picture- just the lines. All my games do the same thing.

I'm using a generic power supply, set on 9vDC, it only has 300mA. I've got 7.5vDC in at the VReg. and 5vDC out.

I think the unit is powering, just not reading the game but not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We haven't been able to play for so long- It would be great to be able to play again.

BTW the whole unit, board, chips, everything looks like brand new.

    Thanks again,

    Roger

I'm going to add my vote for changing out Integrated Circuit (IC) chips - - specifically, the Television Interface Adapter (TIA).

This website has a nice view of the chipset (last image on page); bottom one in the trio of ICs is the TIA:

I had a similar problem with a few consoles, and swapping the TIA solved the problem.

It is also possible that the Ram Input/Output Timer (RIOT) IC can cause that issue, by messing with the sequencing and timing of the graphics and causing that rolling horizontal stripe error, but I would start with the TIA.

If you need a TIA or RIOT chip, Bradley at Best Electronics has them in stock. He's the solid go-to for those types of things!

  21. The images work, it just takes a very long time. This is worth $80 just for the discs. The Dreamcast is a fun system and it actually emulates the A8 okay. I am sooo tempted on this one. I mean... Power Stone 2.

Eh, I would be excited, too, except it is all "backups" - - a giant pile of burned CDs, and only 5 original games in real retail packaging!

I guess $80 would be worth the time of burning, though - - getting a good, usable Dreamcast "backup" burn can a real art, and you can make a lot of coasters in the process!
