  1. I have seen the trick where you leave one brain on screen and just shoot the wavy bullet he fires and build up score very, very slowly, when i saw this the guy playing moved the player to the lower area of the right hand side and just stood there and as the single brain that was left moved and fired the wavy bullet snaked to the right side and headed straight downwards where it was easily picked off..but can you imagine how long you would have to stand there pushing right and firing up?.It would take weeks

  2. Its sounds like a voltage/stability problem or thermal as it happens after a while, never heard of this fault before though with Atari VCS so do what iesposta has recommended and let us know.

Soldering is not too difficult and after a short while you will get the hang of it,,just remember to heat the solder and not heat the component too much ;) and it is always worth practicing on an old circuit board as well..

  3. I agree with game 3 on Berzerk or game 9 for a quick blast! :-D ,I have already done Haunted House on all 9 levels but still like to play game 7 as its the level i struggled with and had to return to after completing the others for some reason.

Space Invaders Game 8 and fat ship :)

with Adventure level 1-3 then level 3 again for W.Robinett easter egg all in one sitting.

  4. I have had this problem with Atari carts myself anf i hope in your case it is just dirty carts or edge connector,if the game cart int connector is visable then i fold a sheet of white paper several times until rigid, add a few drops of solvent/pcb cleaner on the corner of the paper and rub the cart internal edge connector, you will see the dark carbon deposits being left on the paper as you rub and you can do this dry too without adding a cleaning fluid but i prefer to add some whenever possible. With official Atari carts you can insert something small into both slots at the same time in the underside of the cartridge and push the internal door inwards to reveal the connector inside.

If you suspect the connector inside the console is dirty (with the power off) i soak the edge connector of an old activision cartridge in solvent cleaner and insert/remove the cart in the system around 30 times and i find the repeated inserting of the game cart with remove dirt, you can also clean dirty cartridges in this way if you do not feel confident in pushing back the flap inside atari games just spray the cartridge connector inside the console and just insert/remove the dirty cart several times.

  5. I have been playing a lot of Master System and Megadrive games lately and especially the Sonic and Streets Of Rage games and are getting towards the end of all of them.

So just 18 Wheeler on Dreamcast at the moment which is nothing special but i am trying to complete it again but on all difficulty levels with all trucks and trailers which is a lot harder.

  6. I have always liked wire frame / vector graphics in the arcade and the same with the vectrex but i think most the games are poor on it,with Berzerk,Scramble and Spike about the best that i played which is a shame. From a collecting point of view though i would still pick one up though for the right price if i could and i think you did well for $100.

  7. Shenmue followed by Code Veronica,TR-The Last Revelation,Shenmue II,Nomad Soul and 18 Wheeler.

I have been playing 18 Wheeler a lot the last fortnight and i think its underated because in arcade mode it appears very shallow- 4 levels (around 15 mins game time),so i set myself the challenge of completing the game in arcade mode on every difficulty level with every truck with every trailer and suddenly the game becomes quite aggresive with you having to experiment with routes and hope for good variance with the traffic and `Lizard Tail` the rival truck.

  8. Yep one bad guy does the outer perimeter and the others turn as they climb or fall when possible,so if a bad guy starts in the top left corner it will head bottom right turning every oportunity ie Dwn-Rgt-Dwn-Rgt-Dwn-Rgt.Once you get used to this you can sometimes stop and watch them fall/climb past before moving on.

  9. In your opinion, what is the most ridiculous artwork put on an Atari 2600 game box? By ridiculous, does the artwork have anything to do with the actual gameplay? Does it totally overhype the actual game? It doesn't have to be one made by Atari, any of the third party game boxes are valid. As an example, I consider the boxart for both Breakout and Super Breakout pretty ridiculous. How many times do you really picture yourself as a tennis player slamming a ball up against a breaking wall while engaged in a game of Breakout?

It's called metaphor and imagination. People buying games in the 70s and 80s didn't have the same expectation that artwork would look exactly like the on-screen graphics. It was a way to get people excited about the games, and connect to what was state-of-the-art technology at the time. So, I don't think any of the art was ridiculous.

I agree with this, the cover has to help sell the product so you would see many over the top box designs but with systems the way they were back then you used your imagination while playing, which nowdays of course is not required and a dead art.

Back then you plugged in Adventure and had to imagine the hedge like maze from the cover was the solid mazes onscreen and your `block` was a knight and the giant ducks like creatures were infact writhing dragons/serpents ;-)

  10. Thats a shame and it looks like a nice clean well looked after unit too,it does sound like a short to me too if its effected a game cart, when you take it back apart you may see where you went wrong.Usually near screw holes, cart slot and the jack fittings.

  11. besides, that's like saying pole position didn't need the red/white road boarders either.

This is some pseudo-3d with 90 degrees turns:

I remember Cisco Heat,it does not start to badly but after a minute or so it feels like your driving along a road through an earth quake with the distant buildings and trees swaying left-right.I cannot see how it could be done without just 2 frames flickering faster or slower.

  12. A good feeling when you get your first system/carts and hopefully this is the start of an interesting journey for you  ,some of those carts do look a little beaten but then again Activision carts very often look like that anyway.

  13. The music from Pitfall when you swing on a vine reminds me of some instrument, just not sure which one.

Yes i think it has an Arab sound like one of those instruments an Asian snake charmer would use to (allegedly) charm a Cobra,i think it is called a pungi?

I agree with Raiders Of The Lost Ark although i am not sure the flute is that close it sounds to electrical to me lool

  14. I just picked up a free C64 from Craigslist but need to find a power supply for it. I looked at Ebay but noticed that the majority of auctions are bundled with the C64. Does anyone know of a website that sells them? Is there a particular make/model that is better to get?

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Aside from ebay there are retro traders out there who might sell them,i know of at least one in uk (Retrogames) so surely there must be retro traders in the US.

    C64 PSU-Retrogames

  15. I have both systems too but the A2600 was my first machine and so thats where my heart and cherished gaming memories have always been,i am not sure if its because i am in UK but i knew only a couple of people with Nes consoles as most the people had a Master System.I picked up a NES later myself in the 90`s when i started becoming a retro gamer, there are a lot of really good games on the Nes but you can say that about most systems.(except perhaps for the N64 and Vectrex.

I think the gaming industry had become a little more stable during the Nes/Sms era and therefore you would get more quality game titles released.
