Looks like some sort of medieval sex toy

Star Raiders for me,I am surprised when I voted and saw results as I would put Star Voyager clear second lol but it is a reason to play Star Master again and see if I am missing something.

Is Solaris the best 2600 game graphics-wise?
R.O.T.S replied to NinSEGA's topic in Atari 2600 Programming
Yeah I think it probably is the best looking and real slick too, always liked the horizon on Chopper command as well, love those bands of color. -
I have just recalled another two which i would like to share- Slap Fight- If you do not move or shoot and let your first ship get killed your second ship is fitted with all upgrades and weapons. This was discovered during a funny moment in a poolroom we used to visit, allegedly the poolroom owner was playing his own game when he was distracted lighting a cigarette and he lost his first ship, after cursing his second ship came on screen completely kitted with every weapon.I have done this trick myself and it is not worth it as your craft is so long you are unable to move left and right without getting hit and there are simply too many bullets on screen. Robocop- On the scrapyard level kneel close to the third car magnet crusher and punch it as it hits the floor in front of you. We used to do this whenever we played and reached this stage, walk close up to the third magnet on a chain and kneel, when it drops in front of you just punch it and remain in position. You are awarded many points every second until you stand so we would hang around until we have enough time to comfortably fight the guy at the end and then stand and run towards the end of the level. Not sure if this works on all the crushers,it has been a long time.

This will depend on how old you are i guess but back in the day playing arcade games in various places you learned tricks, patterns and game secrets from observing other players, after all the internet probably did not exist so my question is - What secrets in games did you discover by watching other gamers on arcade machines?. My own memories are of the late 80's and early 90's watching my cousin who was much better than me at games and also spent more time playing,I have seen him uncovering hidden items above the screen in Karnov, getting deep into Rygar finding the '?' item and jumping on one of the later levels and using the spinning weapon to uncover hidden stars in the sky (I think it was for a million bonus).I also remember someone playing Rolling Thunder and scrolling all the way back through a level to get ammo from a door which was unknown to me as i thought you could do that just once, these are just a few examples but my favourite one is turning into a frog in Ghosts'n goblins,I was blown away when I saw my cousin do that but of course he must of seen other people do all these tricks as there was no websites then it was all word of mouth and showing off.

I agree and was a little shocked when I played this version,I thought it was corrupted data or something.Shame really because for an arcade Star Wars port it seemed quite slick to me.

WTF! Now even the Virtual Boy has SF2 and not the Jaggy!
R.O.T.S replied to sd32's topic in Atari Jaguar
It does look real good,I imagine you can do some pretty impressive looking tricks with games that use back/fore ground interaction. -
Donkey Kong ALPHA 3DG+ REDUX SPECIAL-X

This is a million $ question and requires a little thought,in my case it may not be exactly my favourite game but it might be a game i had to play because i could not afford to buy games very often. Space Invaders,Warlords or Combat are possible candidates but my Fav game Raiders Of The Lost Ark could be another,i was good at the game back then and it can be a time consuming game.

Ms.Pacman gets the vote for me,the Pacman 4K is pretty good though.

How Atari Box Art turned 8 bit games into virtual wonderlands
R.O.T.S replied to 128bytes's topic in Atari 2600
Yeah good times back in the day when we had to refer to box artwork and use our imaginations to help visualise what we could see onscreen, same for all retro systems really but i think the atari 2600 has some of the best examples simply because of the size of the boxes. Not quite the same feeling years later when looking at a game cassette inlay cover , -
I am in the UK and my best memories of back in the day are of `Sea-side` resorts like Coral Island in Blackpool and the arcade right off the coach park in Morcambe. In Birmingham in the 90`s we often visited Daviles arcade which may have some gaming history - apparently in the 80`s US arcade gamers used to travel to the UK for competitions at this arcade but i have never really found any evidence of this on the interweb.Daviles is now called "Agora" and unsurprisingly a former shadow of itself (it is lucky it is still going at all)

Your top ten arcade games of the early 80's
R.O.T.S replied to StragglyMarlin5's topic in Arcade and Pinball
I like a lot of the older games including a few B/W titles, big fan of maze games too. There are simply too many and they do change over time but just off the top of my head- Mr Do! Pacman Pengo Berzerk Battle Zone Frogger Lady Bug Tron Phoenix Moon Cresta -
I own 2X 1 slot MVS for my arcade cabs, one was inside my Final Fight cab http://www.jammajup....inal-fight.html but developed a video fault (lines across the bottom of the display) so that has be taken out.The other is inside my Atari Guardians Of The Hood MVS convert http://www.jammajup....of-the-hood.htm. My preference is to have the demo sound on but i live in flats so it is turned down. My fav games - Metal Slugs (Any) Shock Troopers Blazing Star Aero Fighters 2 (Sonic Wings 2) LAst Resort Pulstar Top Hunter Magician Lord

Poo! and it looks even worse after playing Shadow Squadron, they are called Tie fighters because of the way they unconvincingly wiz around your craft it looks like they are tied to your ship by a piece of string.
-
Yeah i would also give Steel Empire (Empire Of THe Steel) the nod too, massively underrated and quite a challenge,I do also still play Arrow Flash-okay it is not brilliant but might be worth a look. Some Others - Bio Hazard Battle Mega Swiv (Firepower 2000) Master Of Weapon Hellfire Vapour Trail Truxton (Tastujin) Aero Blasters (Air Buster) is a rare catch if you can get a copy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfJCziiYVAo" If you want something a little unusual try Elemental Master http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srgwgbbNW2Q"

Solder-What type? Soldering Iron-What Wattage?
R.O.T.S replied to Rik's topic in ColecoVision / Adam
I am not too keen on using a blower to remove fumes,i would rather just open a window. The number of times i watch people blowing onto solder to blow smoke away puzzles me as i am sure this is bad as blowing into a cooling joint can cause bad solder. -
I find it sort of average,I have always preferred Galaxians to Galaga as a game even in the arcade but that aside the 7800 Galaga is playable and I have no need to repeat what other people have said about the game speed.

Would you look at the condition of those boxes! ,some good titles there.
-
So how does it play,is it any good as as A2600 games go?
-
You will enjoy your 2600 that is a guarantee,Riddle Of The Sphinx is another game which used other switches to perform tasks,it appears not too popular with people today because like Raiders Of The lost Ark it may have seemed very complex back at the time but i like both games and still play them both today.

It all depends really,it is all in the eye of the beholder. I imagine my experiences and opinions as a UK retro gamer would be a lot different to most other members here too,The BBC model B was the school computer for me and i was a ZX Spectrum and Amiga owner. In 2010 i gave up with next gen and became a full retro gamer and since then i have u-turned to explore and play games on other systems i never owned like BBC,C64,Amstrad CPC,Atari ST and 8-bits. The ZX Spectrum has a place in my heart anyway and along with it i would easily recommend the Amiga and any Atari 8-bit computer.Maybe the Acorn BBC too as it really surprised me with some of its games and visual effects that are used but i am sure some of its hardware and software is not going to be easy to find,I understand the popularity and importance of the C64 in retro computer history with its audio and i have seen a few awesome games on it such as IK+,Retro Grade,Armalyte, etc, that i am sure are not done as well on other 8 bit machines. At the end of the day though i have simply not found enough quality on the C64 and can simply count the number of good playable games in 10`s but on other computer of the time,CPC,BBC,Spectrum and Atari-8bits i can find 100`s of enjoyable games.I guess the C64 would be easy to find stuff for though.

Sad reading some of this ,it makes you fell like you have to post games inside something like the old VHS shock boxes before sending them out, or you have to resort making you own external packaging to guarantee things will not get damaged. I have sent some items abroad like arcade game boards and have to admit it i used to bring strong boxes home from my place of work otherwise i too would of most likely used whatever other weak box i could find at the time, .

...when in the storage area of your flat you have 20 crates of consoles, computers, games also some containing assorted cables and controllers working and faulty you will not throw anything away. The garden tools and other items that should be in storage are lying around in other parts of the flat.

Title says it all. Was Polaris ever released on any other Atari system (computer or console) other than the Atari 2600?
