Oh yea, MAME, I forgot about that!  I'm not used to seeing them as I load most of my carts from disk images in emulation.  One thing I dislike about WHT's repository is that many files are sorted by emulator versus the actual software, so to find a program one might have to search multiple areas.  I found a few files right away in your repository but then couldn't figure out what to do with them.  :dunce:

    I have Carts-on-disk for the CF7/nanoPEB here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/10djz2wnQJXSuQJO5oXmWedbeTL44MqPW

but that's not what you are talking about is it? you're talking about files in TIFILES format for uploading across serial?

I took a look around for some software but the files that are in the ZIPs that I downloaded aren't TI file format.  How does one use them with our hardware?

the cartridges are in .rpk format for MAME which is a .zip file of the grom and rom files. export the grom and rom from the .rpk/.zip files will, usually, get you the files you need for v9t9 & classic99. (See the links in the MAME section for details). disk are in .dsk format native to v9t9, classic99 & MAME.

phase II of this project I plan to get more hardware-centric right now I'm more emulator-centric because it's what I know. that being said, if you know a large cache of files in TI-files format I'll be glad to setup a section for that.

ALSO, if anyone know how to convert from .rpk/.dsk to TIfiles (or a utility) I'll be glad to post it on the website

Hey, I recognize that console. It was fabricated by a German user a long time ago. Note that the box with six connectors is one of several that he built, each with different cartridges inside. I ended up with several of them, along with a number of the mutant single cartridges, a couple of interesting multicartridges, and one of his modified consoles.

cool, if still got them, take some pictures. love to see more of, whatever these where.

on Twitter has started a hashtag #PimpmyTI. that's where I got this thing. A ti99 AS A Kerbel Space Controller.

A this ORANGE!!!!! one. Did I mention that it was ORANGE!!!

And a little fake wood grain always improves the look of anything. NOTE: notice the cartridge adapters and multi-unit that was created for it. Oh, and I do not approve of a beige keyboard on and black/silver unit.

THIS on the other hand is a thing of beauty. One of the best looking TIs out there. What can I say, It's mine. :)

And then a TI that went totally over to the dark side:

A more interesting solution would be to make a mini-backplane card and enclosure.

Basically, it takes the card edge connector and turns it 90 degrees so that it is facing upwards, and provides several of these, while still passing through out the other side. From there, you could "vertically" install the Tipi+32k (speech synth enclosure version), AND a speech synth, (since the vertical space needed to mount this way would still work out fine), and just terminate the vertical card edges with rubber boots. Cards could be held in registration with simple slots/notches in the enclosure wall.

The issue with the JediMatt versions of those cards is that the cards themselves are taller than the main unit (and already integrate a 90 degree conversion), so the enclosure is going to look funny. For the speech enclosure varieties though, they are meant to lay horizontal in a very narrow enclosure, so even turning them upright like that would still not exceed the vertical realestate allowances.

thats interesting. what you saying is kinda go back to the way the TI-99/4 had sidecars but up & down?

that part is easy. The Cosplay kids have been doing that for years.

    Method 1

    Method 2

Interesting. here's my thought on this. get a project box about the right size with curved edges. cut a hole in the side for the edge connector to the console. take the bottom of a speech box and cut/mount/glue in the project box so that the bottom part speech edge sticks out the hole cut so the speech can interface with the console and have a place for the speech mount to. attach the tipi boards to the speech. mount the raspi in the box as well. unfortunately I don't have the money right now (on my list) to buy a tipi and raspi to build this so I don't know if it would really work. but it sure looks like it would and with a silver/black unit it would look really snazzy if done well. so I throw this idea out if anyone wants to try it.

a thought came to me the other day; the old standalone disk drive side boxes for the 99/4, I bet one could fit a speech board, a TiPI memory board and a RasPi all in the box with room left over. wouldn't be hard to find a project box that sizes and mod the innerards to hold the equipment. just how would one emulate that alum silver top trim?

I have new beige keyboards, but no black ones. (in Texas)

I have a beige one in a black/silver console (in Milwaukee storage). I got some heat for showing it in public.

Maybe we can swap? (when we can travel and meet up again.)

(Old Radio Shack stock I got from a Milwaukee User Group member.)

thank for the offer but I have grown fond of the black keyboard in the beige cabinet look. I guess it's the rebellious streak in me. :)

Something else you might consider are better composite cables. Standard audio cables (which appear to be what you are using) can introduce interference when being used for video.

true. I made that cable when I had an 800xl (I had did the resister snip on the 800xl to increase sharpness) and it was OK. but the 800xl does seem to have a superior VDG to the TI-99/4a.  Also there is a fix were you put a resister in the line that cleans up the signal somewhat that I haven't added.

one thing I meant to talk about this device is the 'best guess'. I found that different flat screen monitors do different conversions of composite, some better than others. the monitors are, essentially, emulating the look of the composite screen as it might look on a CRT. the composite signal is analog but the TV/monitor is digital so it makes a best guess of what it should look like. My Toshiba TV does a fairly good job on my SNES and when I had a 800xl. But for some reason it just couldn't get the TI-99/4a right. (Note: it does look a bit better on my LG big screen but just a bit.) But this box, being dedicated to converting composite to HDMI and up converting it to more pixels, just seems to do a better 'guess' for the TI-99/4a.  I have also found it improves the SNES a little bit too. Which means that on another TV/monitor it might not be as big a difference.

  12. update after using it for about a week. I still really like this device. it was cheap and cleaned up the picture quite a bit. and after fiddling with the color setting on my TV I got the colors to actually look better than just straight composite. the only thing I don't like is that it's more wires to deal with but I guess you can't have everything. the best improvement is with the text. much clearer text, especially with the 40 column text.

and another plus with this device I can use it clear up the screen on other composite computers and game systems.
