  1. When I was kid, I wanted a pool table. Instead, my parents got me a ping pong table. While I was disappointed, I grew to like ping pong. So when I saw World Ping Pong Championship get released, I was cautiously optimistic. Unfortunately, rather than reminding me of the fun I had playing ping pong, it reminds me of the initial disappointment. While Gameshastra created a handful of original titles for the Minis program at the very start (games like D-Cube and Deflector), most have simply been ports, either from their PC casual games or their more recent efforts on iOS. At first I thought this was an original PSP title, but apparently it is simply a port of World Cup Table Tennis, originally by Skyworks (who also originally did Crime Spree). You control a ping pong paddle, apparently held by The Invisible Man. You can move the paddle around with the D-pad or analog nub, and pressing X jabs the paddle forward. To serve, you have to move the paddle to the ball and hit it; you can’t use the X button. To return the ball after it’s batted back to you, you move the paddle where you want and hit the X button to whack it back. You don’t always need to use the X button though, as you can just move it forward yourself. It’s kind of a strange playing method, as if it were meant for a touchscreen where your finger controlled the paddle, or perhaps even for the Wii, with the waggle controls. Using the analog nub or D-pad instead is more than a little clunky. Still, because it’s physics-based (as opposed to simply timing your button presses), you can perform some impressive trick shots by putting spin on the ball. On the other hand, you can’t really seem to slam the paddle down hard to spike the ball. Then again, maybe that’s not done in competitive ping pong, as it can be somewhat dangerous (I fell on and broke the legs of a table that way). But I think it’s just because touch controls don’t always translate well to a D-pad or analog nub. They should have added a slam button. And basically that’s all there is to World Ping Pong Championship, other than being able to choose to play an opponent in practice mode or compete in a World Championship tournament. In either case, you are playing against invisible people, though they do come from countries, which are rated by skill. China and Russia are the tops at ping pong, while the US and UK are the worst, lagging behind Finland, Canada, Sweden and Germany. The graphics are clean, if very sparse. There’s a table, two paddles, and a ball. The music is generic, though catchy and the sound effects are ones you’ve probably heard before. While World Ping Pong Championship can be fun to play for a match or two, there’s just so little to it. Icon Games has made a number of fairly simple sports games—Arcade Darts, Arcade Air Hockey & Bowling, etc.—but they went the extra mile and added things like opponents with names and faces, not to mention different things to unlock and spiffier presentation. This is among the most spartan of Minis, about on par with Sony’s “Feel for Two” line. As I look at YouTube and look at the iOS version on which this is based, there are all these extra features on iOS that would have addressed my complaints. Unlockable paddles, more countries in the tournaments, stat tracking, and so forth. That version? 99 cents. This costs £2.49/€2.99. There is no excuse to charge more money for less features. Far, far less features in this case. This is not the first time Gameshastra has ported an iPhone game to PSP without including all the content (Top Gun lost the volleyball mini-game, Route 66 lost the mini-games to replenish hints), but this is by far the most egregious. My guess is they ported the game a couple of years ago (the copyright date on it is 2010), when World Cup Table Tenniswas more bare-bones, and they simply just published it now, rather than updating the game to its more current form. 3/10 POSTED BY JEREMYR ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 29, 2012 AT 7:41 AM
  2. Yeti Sports: Pingu Throw has actually been around for ages as a hugely popular Flash game that has spawned all sorts of animal-launching spin-offs, sequels and imitators. It’s also been released as an iTunes app, with a free ‘Lite’ trial version, so it’s no surprise to see it make the transition to the world of minis. Initially it’s really fun to play, just like the Flash game, but in order for such a simple Flash game to translate well onto a hand-held like the PSP it really needs a little more depth, a little something extra to keep you going back for one more go. After playing Yeti Sports for many hours in the hope of finding any more depth to the gameplay than first impressions would indicate, I can safely say that there isn’t any! That’s not to say it’s not a total blast to play, because it is, but the novelty wears thin after an hour or so, and with most of the other minis released so far being of such impressive quality with plenty of longevity and depth to the gameplay, Yeti Sports has a lot to live up to in comparison and it falls some way short of the mark. The whole idea of the game couldn’t be simpler. You press X to make Pingu the Penguin jump off the rock, and then X again to have the Yeti hit him with his bat and launch him into the air. You then take control of Pingu in mid-air to ensure that he glides as far as possible. Success in Yeti Sports is all about timing your bat swing just right so that you hit Pingu’s sweet spot (don’t like to even think where that might be!), causing him to squeak with delight, and sending him flying across the snowy landscape. What you’ll learn with practice is that it’s best to hit Pingu as late into his initial dive as possible, when he’s almost reached the ground. This carries with it the risk of swinging too late and leaving him to fall headfirst in the snow (which, okay, does look really funny!), but time it right and you’ll send the little penguin soaring high on his way. Once Pingu’s in mid-air, control shifts to the analog stick, the left and right d-pad buttons or the R and L shoulder buttons, whichever you feel most comfortable using to adjust his flight position. When you angle him just so, you’ll notice that he’s buoyed by air cushions that propel him even further. There are two gameplay modes to choose from: Level and Classic. In Level, you unlock new levels by achieving certain distances and collecting the required amount of fish. There are three levels in total: Picky Penguin, Glorious Glide and Weak Wave, all of which have 9 stages to complete. Whereas with most games the incentive to unlock new levels comes from wanting to see new scenery and maybe even a different type of gameplay, in Yeti Sports you remain firmly stuck in the one playing area, and there’s no real discernible difference in the gameplay from level to level from what I can see. Maybe I’m missing something crucial and I’ll be glad to be proved wrong, but I really can’t see it. In Classic mode there are no collectibles, it’s simply a matter of getting Pingu to glide as far as possible in order to achieve a high score on the leaderboard. Graphics-wise, the winter wonderland, the crisp blue sky and the cute characters all look great, but there’s only one field of play so you might get tired of looking at it after a while, I know I did. Yeti Sports is not a bad game at all, but it’s frustrating to think that so much more could have been done with it in terms of adding more features, and the low score reflects that. To call it Yeti Sports is a misnomer, it’s only one sport, and that’s Pingu Throwing, yet there are other Flash versions of the game that feature several different sports, and it’s a great pity that these weren’t included in the minis version. At £2.49/€3.99 it’s certainly cheap enough, but I can’t see it holding the interest of all but the die-hard Flash game fans for too long. 3. That's the one flaw it has. The biplanes mode in Triple Action on the Intellivision suffers similarly. One of the best single screen local multiplayer games of all time, but unless you have a friend or family member willing to play, it's useless. And that one is particularly tough these days since it has a rudimentary physicals system (You can stall your plane) and the Intellivision controller is so foreign to people these days. Tough to convince someone to give it a serious try.
  4. If you think it's best, sure. I didn't want to clog up the "Recent activity in my clubs" status bar with our club's brief flurry of activity. I'm going to be reposting several dozen reviews from our reviews section at http://www.pspminis.com/list-games/ that covered the many digital PSP Mini and Playstation Mobile downloads that Sony released for the PSP/PS3 and Vita, since our site is having technical issues. It was the only resource that covered many of these games, so I'm hoping this AtariAge club will help keep those reviews online for the foreseeable future and let our small number of forum regulars to continue to chat with each other (There's about 8 of us, several already AtariAge members, that were keeping our forum alive). If you don't think that's going to be a bother for anyone that our club is really busy for the next few days, I wouldn't bother taking us private if you think it's unnecessary.
  5. Doesn't appear I can take the club private temporarily. I guess I'm glad I picked public then, since copying over the reviews to keep them online and available would've been rather pointless if only club members could view them. Not that I think there's tons of people looking for reviews of PSP Minis these days, but they deserve to be kept online. Especially when Sony is still actively selling them, it's still a legitimate resource rather than a historical curiosity. All but the last 10 pages of our music thread have been brought over here. I'll do those later with a final post, and then try to knock out a good chunk of the reviews.
  6. AXM Member Oh I heard it. No more than twice, but I did. I think. 37 million views is A LOT, wow. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Toejam & Earl cover, since this is a funky year, here in the PSPMinis forums. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member That's pretty good. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Here's another '80s song I have never heard of before - When in Rome. 10 million views. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member I gave in to the dark side and downloaded to my mobile two Vocaloid songs that we already talked about: Palette and World End's Dance Hall. Yes, I don't know what's gotten into me, either. Must be the thought of having to wear glasses in a few days. I am turning into an otaku. The bad kind of otaku. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I gotta admit, that''s pretty good singing. I'd never know they were robots. Buddy Holly wore glasses. He was cool. As long as you don't buy any maid figurines, you'll be okay. Or fly in a small plane in bad weather with an untalented fat guy. Rygar. Not the game, but the band. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Unfortunately many songs (and singers such as Rin) are as ear piercing as it can possibly get. Headache guaranteed. I might actually be able to do some decent stuff with Vocaloid. It doesn't seem to be hard at all, and the singer doesn't appear in fullscreen, either. I don't want to be viewed as a girly girl stuff lover/pervert (depending on the person that sees me). It was supposed to be a joke, I guess. I never really understood this maid fetish. Is it because "she's a maid, she can do whatever you want"? Aside from that hypothesis, I don't get all this drooling over girls in maid costumes. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I don't get the maid stuff either, to be honest. At least not he Japanese ones. French maids, maybe. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member A Day At The Inn, Demon Gaze's Inn theme. So catchy~ Aaand this is a Vocaloid, too. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member That sounds like that "I had the time of my life" song from Dirty Dancing. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member Dude, just listening to certain music doesn't turn you into an otaku. And the only bad otaku are those who try to force their views on other people. Hmm, if they don't give me headaches, are you saying I qualify for a refund? You mean you bought the actual voice synthesis software? Same here. Maids are cleaning staff. Yet no one has janitor fetishes, as far as I know. Of course, if janitors were outfitted with bladed weapons, or even better, transforming bladed weapons, that would be pretty damned cool. "Hi, I'm here to disinfect the room--starting with you." POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Otaku is an offense in Japanese: it means that I'm a person that stays at home all the time and prefers to play games and watch anime than to go out with friends. Oh, wait, that's me. If they didn't give it to you, that means you didn't hear them screaming words ending with -i (in Japanese and many languages in Europe it's supposed to be pronounced "ee"). Haha, buying. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Damn, I've gotten addicted to this Spacesynth stuff. Here's a good one, Galactic Warriors - Atlantis is Under Attack POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member The word you're thinking of is "hikikomori," not "otaku." An otaku is just someone who is a fervent fan of something. For example, a ガンオタク, "gun otaku," is someone who really, really likes guns. Being labeled as an otaku is somewhat demeaning, but only in the same way as being called a nut in English. You know, like a gun nut. There is no "loner" stigma associated with being an otaku; on the contrary, many otaku are very eager to share their interests with others. Sometimes, perhaps too eager. Actually, I very rarely am able to parse actual words out of what Vocaloids sing. And in fact, I often can't tell what real people are singing, either. I do know, though, that I don't think I've ever heard any Vocaloid doing what I would consider screaming. I still don't understand what you were talking about here. It's voice synthesis software; why would there be any directly associated visuals at all? That's done totally separately, no? POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member I don't know, I saw a 3D model somewhere. I guess it was fanmade and not inside the program. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Aw, I was hoping when you used the program, you'd see her sing. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Well, there's MikuMikuDance. Seperate program, but it's free. And it works with Kinect. It also has a separate Wiki. THAT'S where I saw the 3D model from. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # Sniper D. Luffy Member http://youtu.be/ucyYfzbrYkQ Kickass moosic yo, every time. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Aw, I was expecting cows. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member I prefer Collective Consciousness. And The Hot Wind Blowing. I love every Rising song, really. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Shoju Meguro has announced that Persona 5 will have "Acid Jazz influences" for its soundtrack. Considering what one of his jazzy tracks turned out to be, I'm kinda happy. Not that I didn't enjoy his Jpop/Jrap tracks. Oh, and the trailer's theme is supposed to be an intrumental version of the main theme. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member You Are Dead, from Total Distortion. Thought you were hot Guess what, you're not You are dead, dead, dead POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I was into Acid Jazz for about 2 months before I got sick of it. And that's catchy, but not as catchy as Surprise, You're Dead POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member I have been absolutely bumping the sh*t out of Kendrick Lamar's new single. [link] For me, not only is it a fantastic track, he's saying what I've always said in regards to black people. That's a subject too heavy for this thread though. His new album can't come fast enough. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member Man, based on the track listing, I might really enjoy Exit Trance Presents Speed Anime Trance Complete Best 2(whose limited edition, incidentally, came with one of the Puchi Colle figures). Someone uploaded the entire CD (I've linked to the GitS:SAC "Inner Universe" remix), and I like most of what I've heard so far. Well, at least I don't object to it much; trance isn't really my thing. Huh, two or three of the characters on the cover later became Puchi Colle figures in Exit Trance/Tunes limited editions. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Despite the name, that cd isn't trance. Sounds more like some sort of happy hardcore. See, this is an example of happy hardcore https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3lE91wz9zA This is trance (probably my favorite track from 2014) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMi9heTZUwI It's somewhat slower (usually 130-140 bpm vs 160-180 for happy hardcore) and less manic sounding and more organic, usually. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member You know, when I started listening to that CD (at YouTube), I thought, "This is trance? Seems more hyper than what I recall being defined as 'trance.'" Namely, I don't think you could go into a trance listening to it. In fact, starting with the song right after "Inner Universe" ("Don't Say Lazy," the first ending title of K-On!), the tempo actually accelerates and stays that way for several songs, up until the Macross Frontier song "What 'bout My Star?". I really don't think it fit "Don't Say Lazy" well. And also, "happy hardcore" is an actual genre? One of the tracks on my Fate/tiger colosseum Original Soundtrack CD is a "happy hardcore" remix of the game's opening song. I'd always thought the phrase was just something the remixer had made up. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Well, hardcore is the genre, happy hardcore is the subgenre. There's several other variants, like terrorcore which is basically the opposite of happy. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member Some people in the comments of the ETPSATCB2 rip on YouTube called it "nightcore." In other news, ahhh, a cultural treasure unearthed by watching Ghost Sweeper Mikami. Apparently, this "song" is quite well known in Japan (I mean in Japanese, where it starts out "Mitchan michi michi unko tarete"). I guess it sort of corresponds to "Jingle Bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg." It's not bad, but I like the original better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04xeK6S493A POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # Atariboy Member I don't mind the sax, but the drums aren't doing it any favors. And the electronic sounding music about 1:30 in doesn't fit it well. A good effort though that does a good job of respecting the original. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # Atariboy Member Here's a song I recently discovered (I like Lou Christie and his music, even though he's ripping off Frankie Valli's style). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnFU-bMDICE I'm surprised that this one was even possible in 1966. Same with Will You Love Me Tomorrow by the Shirelles from 1960 or so. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member You Give Love A Bad Name, Bon Jovi Listened to it a minute ago. Falling Down, Duran Duran Do I like them this much? Maybe. Funny how I always thought that they said "Summoner, can you help me?" until I searched for the song, not knowing the title, until I decided to Google "hit the ground" instead. The first search only linked to League of Legends stuff, for some reason. Now I know that it's "Someone out/ there to help me". POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Does Summoner ever get used outside of RPGs? Or games at least. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member I was playing Final Fantasy Tactics the first time I listened to it. That's why I heard "Summoner". From Wikipedia: It existed in real life, at least. Heaven (Persona Live), Shihoko Hirata. The best (in my opinion) Persona song, in an even better and longer version. Though I prefer the original version's intro (dat piano). POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Yeah, but that's the sort of thing you would probably only find in a progressive rock song, not Duran Duran POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Sakura Schoolyard, from Tekken Revolution. In the '50s you'd have rock bands dress up in leather jackets, and jazz musicians wore sweaters and such (which was considered "thug" wear back then).. The Who (and several other British bands) dressed as Mods, punk bands dressed like, well, punks. Country singers dressed as cowboys. And this is a few days late, but here's a video with Leonard Nimoy in it. He doesn't sing, unfortunately, he's just there for comic relief. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zj7OJeyhq2Q POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # Atariboy Member In the 1950's, you had people like James Dean that would certainly have been perceived as dressing that way. Title or artist, at least. If you're expecting the mystery to be enough of a click lure, it at least doesn't work on me. Here's something for JeremyR. I don't know what genre this counts as, but "trance" and "house" come to mind--not that I know what really fits into those terms (this probably doesn't meet a BPM requirement for those). Anyway, here'san extended remix that Dominic Glynn did last year with his "Trial of a Time Lord" Doctor Who theme arrangement. It's part of a 4-track mini album of remixes that Glynn released. Ordinarily, Glynn's arrangement of the theme is my least favorite official arrangement (that experimental "Delaware" one that was never really used notwithstanding). It doesn't feel to me like it goes with the show. This remix does more interesting things with it, though. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # Sniper D. I looked it up a while back and discovered that it was just "The Doctor's Theme." The last time that it appeared was rather spectacular; as the Tenth regenerated into the Eleventh amid a violent eruption of energy, a full chorus belted out the theme one final time. It's near the end of "Vale Decem" (Latin, "Farewell Ten"), the piece of music which plays for the Tenth's last few minutes. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member You're too young to be nostalgic. But speaking of nostalgia. That was Yesterday I was a big Foreigner fan as a kid. Not so much anymore, but I still like that song a lot. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member It's not about nostalgia, it's just that I didn't listen to this song for a long time. Besides, I can't be nostalgic over a 6 year old song. But this? Lady (Hear Me Tonight), Modjo? I'm really feeling it. I loved this song so much back then, even though I didn't listen to it as much as people in the year 2000 did. After all, I was only 2. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member Hmm, I thought I was editing my one post, not making new ones. . . . Was there a glitch, or was I just too tired to know what I was doing? But, the beginning of it almost immediately reminded me of "Tokihanate!" ("Release!"; you'll have to get ~30s in to hear the similar bit), the opening title song of the 1999 post-apocalyptic sci-fi anime TV series Blue Gender. Another series where I have the whole thing on DVD but have seen only the first few episodes. The song is sung by voice actress Houko Kuwashima, who played the female lead in the show and still has a very active career. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Hmmm, she looks like a gelfling. One of my favorite websites was caiman.us, whose creator tragically passed shortly after I got there. One of my favorite games was Koopa: A Winter's Tale, a simple and relaxing platform game with an equally relaxing music, playing throughout the whole game, which I still hum after all these years, even though I didn't even know the name of it. Until now, that is. Since I like to watch reviews of the games that I want to buy, yesterday I watched the lengthy Happy Video Game Nerd's review/retrospective of Earthbound. And what do I hear at the 6:25 mark? That music. "It actually came from Earthbound?" I asked to myself. Enthusiastic, I went to search for "earthbound snow theme" on Youtube as fast as I could. Snowman, from Earthbound, is one of the greatest musics in gaming history, in my humble opinion. And I even completely ignored the Smash Brawl version due to the useless choir they added in at the beginning, hadn't I done that, I would have found that much faster. Another game I remember is Super Mario XP, a tough as nails Super Mario and Castlevania crossover. Long story short, I found the music that I liked the most much quicker, by playing the original game. Introducing Heart of Fire, from the very first Castlevania. A couple of days ago, a long forgotten song popped into my head out of the blue. All I could remember was the melody, so I couldn't just search the lyrics to identify what it was. But, I had a strong feeling that it was the ending song to an anime series I had seen a long time ago; while playing it my head, I kept feeling like it should be accompanied by a series of boldly colored still images. I briefly thought at first that maybe I was thinking of a Fushigi Yugi ending title (though definitely not from the TV series, whose ending title I know for certain), since that's a show with similarly jazzy ending songs. After rummaging around through my memories for a while, it finally occurred to me: it was the ending song from Legend of Himiko, a late 90s TV anime based on a PS1 game (whose release it actually predated). One of my standout memories from the show was that, despite being not too interesting for most of its 12 episodes, the story had a REALLY good ending. And the opening title is very beautiful. - 2015/06/10 GMT POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # Sniper D. Here is (most of) an arrangement of the Final Fantasy Prelude that I've had on my drive for about 15 years, by drum & bass artist Epidose/Desimal. A few years ago, I searched around the Web to see what else this guy did; all I knew of his work was this and two other pieces I'd found at about the same time. It wasn't an easy search, with most results for "epidose" just being misspellings of "episode" (I hadn't found his other pen name yet) but I eventually found that his real name was Graham March, and he had committed suicide around 2006. To my surprise, the link above is the only one I could find on YouTube of his FF Prelude remix, and it isn't even complete. That page had very little of his work--at least compared to this YouTube channel. I assume all of that channel is his music, anyway. Oh, hey, I just noticed that the FF Prelude epidose remix really is at that channel, listed plainly as "Prelude." - 2015/06/30 GMT POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # Atariboy Member Most of these 60's musical variety shows like American Bandstand, Shindig, The Ed Sullivan Show, Top of the Pops, and so on were done live. Yet the girls still scream even when it's a girl group. The only ones I know of that weren't, were Shivaree and The King Family Show which were produced in advance on videotape This is from a concert film called The Big T.N.T Show, shot in front of a live audience. But I suppose they may of embellished a bit, although like I said, they screamed even on the live shows. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QM9wSyn8BY (At 11:15 or so, is one of my favorite performances of Downtown that Petula Clark did, which has been my favorite song literally for as long as I can remember. They didn't scream for her, for some reason.). I'd love to get a good quality copy of this and its predecessor, the T.A.M.I. Show. Wish I could've saw Petula Clark in concert in 1965. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I think they lip synced on most of those shows. Even Solid Gold did that. There were exceptions, like the Midnight Special. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # Atariboy Member Sometimes, but often they didn't. A good telltale sign is if mics can be seen or not. And if in doubt, does it sound exactly like the recording (That upload of mine of Be My Baby is noticeably different sounding than the record version, for instance). Something like this (From The Ed Sullivan Show, where no lip syncing was allowed), or that concert movie, is obviously not. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icXwhfIjOlw And Hullabaloo was always broadcast live and with no lip syncing, for another popular one that I neglected to mention above (Sadly though, they didn't always have a band, or in the case below, a symphony to accompany them; The musicians here are just eye candy). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpL1TTxffO0 POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # Atariboy Member Here's a good example of lip syncing. A strategy part where you (playing a Weyr) tried to make alliances with various powers in Pern, then intermittently thread would fall and you'd have to allocate dragons to shoot it down in an arcade sequence (sort of like Joust meets Missile Command). How well you did affected your relationships with the various places in Pern. Then later in the 1990s, someone made a freeware clone of the strategy game portion for MS-DOS. Luffy Member Grieg!!! http://youtu.be/uQxsyA6s90Y POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member There's deliberately nonsensical videos, like Grace Jones. (not safe for work and probably offensive to modern sensibilities) But just the sheer normality of him sitting in his home with his wife and family going about their normal lives and then you see him sitting in a chair with no arms and wanting to change the TV channel is just something out of an existentialist novel. (And it doesn't seem to fit the song at all, which is kind of a nice mellow funky tune.) POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member I don't see anything that could be interpreted as offensive in the video. It was a typical 80s video. But I guess a few people might get up their butt about a song with slave in the title, having black people in the video. Was racism a issue back in the 80s? I think everybody was too coked up and recouping from orgies to really care. Whenever I watch movies from then, the cast seems to be pretty diverse. I'm sure racism was there, it just seems... Less out in the open, I guess. It's kind of hard to gauge. When you ask you usually get one of two answers; "It's not as bad as it is now." or "RACISM WILL NEVER DIE!". I've been listening to this one song pretty heavy. I prefer the original version without Chance, but I like the video. The Chance verse is not bad, it just throws off the mood of the original. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Eh, some of the scenes in the video are parodying old racist stuff (cartoons mostly), so that likely would be misinterpreted today. People on the internet really don't grasp parody. Nuclear war was really the big worry in the 1980s. As long as you weren't Russian, you were okay in most people's books. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member I can vouch for that. Or at least, I can vouch for myself worrying about nuclear war in the 80s. I may have been in the minority among elementary school kids, though. As for racism, I don't think it's worse now than it was then. There were still plenty of racists back then. Movies, however, have had pretty diverse casts since the 70s, I think--or at least white people and black people, not really anyone else. And I don't mean blaxploitation films. Hollywood has been more progressive on that front than most of the US, or at least compared to small-town USA. - 2015/08/10 GMT POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I dunno. Hollywood casting is strange. Like right now there are 10 generic beefy white guys who get 90% of all roles. Ryan Reynolds, Taylor Kitsch (though I think he might have dropped out since his movies bomb), Tatum Channing, now Armie Hammer and a few others whose name escapes me. Except for Ryan Reynolds, I can't tell them apart. And they've always been strange when it comes to Asian roles. At least starring characters. Out of what, probably 150 Charlie Chan, Mr. Moto, and Mr Wong movies, how many were played by an actual Asian american? One, Keye Luke got to play Mr. Wong (formerly played by Boris Karloff) in one movie. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member Wow, I don't even know those characters, much less their movies. Who were they, detectives? Mr. Moto sounds like a bike racer. . . . By the way, the guy's name is the other way around, "Channing Tatum." That threw me the first time I saw it, too. - 2015/08/11 GMT POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Yes, they were detective movies from the first half of the 20th Century. Charlie Chan was the most popular and originally was created to counter all the Fu Manchu type stuff at the time and was based on a real life Chinese-Hawaiian detective named Apana Chang who spoke a Hawaii Creole version of English The way he talked caused a lot of confusion because people thought the movies were implying that Chinese talked like that (as opposed to some Hawaiians), even though none of his children did And there were numerous copycats. Mr. Moto was actually Japanese and was played by Peter Lorre. They stopped the movies after WW2 until the 1960s when they rebooted it starring Henry Silva of all people (who was Puerto Rican but played basically every ethnicity in the world, even Eskimo once). Mr Wong was Chinese of course and was I think supposed to be from Hong Kong (thus explaining Boris Karloff's accent) and was a scientist and used forensics to solve crimes. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member This is strange...apparently The Smithereens (anyone remember them? POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # AXM Member To be fair, you all know how much I love the word "though". Don't try to count how many times I used it. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # Atariboy Member What does it mean? I like German singers. Petula Clark and Little Peggy March both were good at it despite being English and American. I have several of their songs in German on my MP3 player. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpEAnu46owE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7NndDMVHqg&list=PLC792AC9D6EE9636B&index=1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjhIYwSvj4I If I could pick one foreign language to learn, it would be German. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member OTOH = "on the other hand" I only realized what ICYMI means a week or so ago, after having seen it maybe for years. Have you been kicked by Bruce Lee recently? That's what I picked in high school. Well, that and Latin. I first heard Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out for a Hero" as the background music in this Paramount Home Video promo reel (sung by someone else) in the mid-90s. Somehow, despite the song being pretty old by then, I had never heard it on the radio before. I'm not sure I ever heard it afterward, either, but its presence on that promo reel was something I never forgot. - 2015/09/27 GMT POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I was a latecomer to ICYMI as well. There was a writer who covers the Rams that started using it. The trouble with figuring out stuff these days is you don't know if it's an acronym or someone is using text speak. I guess you were too young when it first came out, but Holding Out For A Hero was about as big as a song gets. The video was also fairly memorable, with her right next to the Grand Canyon. She always reminded me of a female Rod Stewart. They even had the same hair. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member "Billie Jean" predates "Holding Out for a Hero," but I heard it plenty of times on the radio growing up. And lots of other songs before it as well, of course. I guess "Hero" was big at release and then just burned out? - 2015/09/28 GMT POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Maybe you just never noticed it. It was a really, really big song. You'd hear it a lot in commercials and promos, too. Remember The Fat Boys? Probably not, but they had a bunch of hits, including one with the Beach Boys and Chubby Checker Funny how fat 35 years ago isn't all that fat now...well, one of them still is, but the other two not so much. (Also funny how different 80s rap was, much more fast paced and cheerful) POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # AXM Member The more I listen to Palette, the sadder I feel. But being such a masochist, I listen to it so many times. I can't help it. No song has ever made me feel as much as this one. It's not better than World's End Dance Hall, the instruments are barely there, it feels pretty short, and I don't even know/remember what she's saying except "Please distinguish me", but it's the one song that resonates with me the most. I might as well call it one of my favorite songs of all time. There, I said it. Yes, I adore a Vocaloid song. And I'm happy I downloaded that PSP Project Diva Extend demo just for the lulz (making fun of Miku basically became a meme at home) back then. On a completely unrelated note, Sally, from DoDonPachi Daifukkatsu Black Label is the catchiest and most pumping 26-seconds-long loop I've listened for a long time. It makes me want to buy this 10€ game's (on Amazon Italy) 10€ DLC just to listen to that. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member There are a surprisingly large number of songs named "Sally" (or with that in the name) and yet I've never known anyone named that. But yours is basically house music. This is a very interesting song from 1980 by John Foxx (of Ultravoxx). I know I've heard the riff, but I never remember hearing the whole song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjA-aFWOZOw POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Suite Photoconductivity, the 26-minute epic written by ZUNTATA for DariusBurst: Another Chronicle. I hated it at first, and thought it was wasted potential (a music that lasts as long as the game itself?!?), but it's slowly starting to grow up on me. I still think that it uses vocals too much, but eh, it's probably better when playing the actual game. Touei (aka Projection), from Darius Gaiden. I absolutely adore the change of... Pretty much everything, at a certain point of the song. I won't spoil anything, listen for yourself. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # Atariboy Member Just discovered this song and love it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2KPQgfmV-k POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member You know they did a song with Jimi Hendrix? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W054gK7oPo0 Just backing vocals, but sort of neat. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member This is like the most generic 80s rock song ever https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqVNYh7jMeY But it's still better than any new rock song since 2000 or so, IMHO. (It's funny, I like a lot of new songs, but just not new rock songs) POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member This is one of my favorite chill out songs, Way Out West - The Gift (2010 remix). POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member After The Stray Cats, there was Phantom, Rocker, and Slick Pretty good stuff. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Atari Baby. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I never thought I'd hear The Eve of War from Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds used in a TV show. But I was wrong, it was on Fargo. I think it was actually made into a computer game, a RTS back in the 1990s. So it's not exactly obscure. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member And more from War of the Worlds, in honor of Autumn, here is Forever Autumn (which is actually the song I originally bought the album for, it has Justin Heyward on it and I used to be a huge Moody Blues fan) POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member You just write these posts so you can put on parade all these proper nouns I've never heard of, don't you? Like "Autumn," totally not even a real word. - 2015/10/23 GMT POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Eh, I was lazy and copied and pasted from the Youtube page. It's one of those words I can never remember how to spell, does the m or n come first? (That, subterranean, and beautiful) And one more, Thunder Child, which is what I always name my ships in any sort of game where you can name your ship. With Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member I was making a joke. You didn't misspell "autumn." - 2015/10/23 GMT POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Here's a picture of it Although I must confess, I never thought of the Martian tripods as having noses. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # Atariboy Member Finally listened to this. I didn't like it, but neat to hear the Ronettes in something drastically different from their typical style. I love the lyrics in Woman in Love, which is more my speed. Too bad that many would now consider it offensive. While falling in love isn't quite yet politically incorrect, dreaming about getting married and having a family seems to be (Or at least expressing those feelings is). POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I'm actually surprised to still hear Hey Joe (Jimi Hendrix's cover of a classic folk song about a guy killing his old lady for cheating on him, which used to be socially acceptable if not necessarily legal*) and Another One Bites the Dust on the radio. And Play that Funky Music still gets played. OTOH, apparently you don't hear Money for Nothing anymore, or only an edited version. * There used to be something called "the unwritten law" which let people do that if your spouse cheated on you, but that seems to have stopped in the 1930s and 1940s. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Okay, now I'll stop. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Gold, Spandau Ballet I think that's its left tentacle, partially hidden by its head due to our point of view. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Ah, that's a good one. The only song of theirs that was really popular in the US was True. Both are sort of not what you'd expect from a band named after a German machine gun, you'd expect something more industrial. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member Gold is my jam. Every once in a while I look at Shatner's Rocket Man cover and crack the hell up. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I actually saw that on TV as a kid. I don't think I had his whole album, but I did have a record with him singing (well, whatever he does, exactly) High Flight, which is a fairly famous poem. (I think I got it from an airplane museum, actually) POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Glad you like(d) it. I always thought Industrial was supposed to refer to music composed including sound made from normal objects, like B.T. Dutch's drill. Nope, it's supposed to be some usually transgressive rock-electronic genre. The more you know. No, O, you shouldn't. It's bad for your stomach. Either that, or you're indestructible. [/onmode-ky] POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member I would not have made that joke. Instead, I might have just said something about recommending that he spread it around. - 2015/10/26 GMT POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Original industrial was kinda like that, they'd used sample of real world sounds. But the industrial rock like Nine Inch Nails and (later) Ministry got popular POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member The piece of music I liked the most out of Galatea's soundtrack, "Apollo," is free to download here as an MP3 file (look for the ダウンロード link around the middle of the page). Not sure if a direct link to the file will work, but you can try. FYI, the song is not representative of the rest of the soundtrack. Half of it is vocal, some by humans and some by Vocaloids, and most of it is some form of, uh, pop, I guess? It's a mix of different artists, all with credits and website noted. Some nice instrumentals in there, too. - 2015/10/29 GMT POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Speaking of jam, Jam On It And I think this one was from a GTA VIce City game, Play At Your Own Risk POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # AXM Member I'm going to leave here some Ar Nosurge tracks just for the sake of it. Wink in the morning. Adore how the accordion sounds so nostalgic (not in a personal way). So People Can Be People. Besides the weird "Indian" part, everything is amazing. Teorema. The piano is awesome here. Finally, if you want a song with meh meaning, there's Class::CIEL_N_PROTECTA;. Yes, I love this OST so far~ POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Precious, Depeche Mode. With a sound like that, hard to believe it even made it to 13 episodes POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Someone made a piano cover of Flame Over's soundtrack. I like me some jazz. It's the first time he included background instruments, and I'm not sure if they added more depth or not. Anyway, check him out, he's been doing it since 2005, so there are a lot of songs to listen to. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member That's pretty good. Although I always liked ragtime better than jazz. Like this, Kitten on the Keys POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member I forgot about this Macho Man/Kanye mash-up. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member Huh, that's a weird one. I assume it's a fan-made remix, and not by someone associated with either person? And I find it odd that I have heard of the New Monkees, though I don't know anything about either set of Monkees. I take it they came from different barrels, though. Each of the 3 seasons of the (hilarious) Working!! anime series (AKA Wagnaria!!, in the West) has an opening theme sung by the 3 lead voice actresses in the show, while the ending themes for each season are sung by the 3 lead voice actors in the show. The girls' songs are upbeat, pop-ish songs (though the first one is apparently ska, a genre I'm not familiar with). In contrast, here's what the men sing: - Season 1: "Heart no Edge ni Idomou" - sounds a lot like 1950s rock to me - Season 2: "Itsumo no Youni Love & Peace" - funk straight out of the 70s, baby - Season 3: "Matsuge ni Lock" - 4 years after season 2, but we're still in the 70s I think this counts as unusual for anime music. All 3 songs are written by the same group, by the way, MONACA, and they also wrote the opening themes which the women sing (as well as the incidental music in the show). Japanese Wikipedia says they wrote the music in my Suzumiya Haruhi no Yakusoku PSP game, too, which was one of the first 2 PSP games I ever bought. - 2015/11/25 GMT POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I was expecting the song, Macho Man. Still hate Howard JOnes though. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Night Fever, Bee Gees. Thank you, Xperia TrackID for letting me know what I'm listening to. I woke up with a song (Rod Stewart's Every Picture Tells a Story) in my head, and then while shopping, I heard it on the store speakers. I don't know what it means, but it happens enough to be strange. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Sort of. Me and a friend of mine at the Middle School used to sing Hoobastank's The Reason (badly, of course). Later, I went to a pizzeria nearby to have lunch, when, surprise, that same music started playing at some point. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # Atariboy Member Up to 89 movies viewed in 2015. Only 11 to go to hit the century mark. I wonder if I should spoil it by watching a movie from the 2000's. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Have you watched Catalina Caper? It has Little Richard singing in it. Not the best song, but he is a hell of a singer. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # AXM Member I beat all four Birth By Sleep Final Mix super bosses. The last battle I did, against No Heart, was a really fun and difficult fight. Wanna know why it's so cool? The music. Forze dell'Oscurità (Italian for "Forces of the Darkness"), which is a remix of one of the final boss themes of the first Kingdom Hearts, Forze del Male (Forces of Evil), and of KHII's Darkness of the Unknown, hence the name. Can anyone explain to me why Boney M is so popular on Youtube? (It was was related video). I'm not complaining, it just seems odd that they have tens of millions of views, while most 70-80s hits have maybe 2-5 million. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Riviera Life, by Caro Emerald ft. Giuliano Palma Loved this song back in 2010. If you don't want a random Italian dude interrupting her soothing voice with his unintelligible language, here's her solo live version. If you want more unintelligible words, here's Io mammeta e tu, by Gigi D'Alessio. It's not really the first Italian song I wanted to share, as it's not exactly a singer I like, at all, but the background smooth jazz (???) is so enjoyable. Focus on that instead. It's not that hard, because of the low quality of the video and the low volume of their voices. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I used to think Gigi was a girl's name until I realized it was a nickname for Luigi POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Tired of listening to VG music, I thought "Why not some jazz?" And that's what I did. Kinda perfect for the hour-long bus trips going to and coming from school. And they're not "memorable", so this video will be new every time I listen to it. POSTED 3 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member It's probably nostalgia, but lately I've been looking up soundtracks (not the score, but the songs used in it) from the 1980s.. The Wraith, starring Charlie Sheen Bonnie Tyler — Matter of the Heart Not as good as her more famous ones, but not bad, either. Honeymoon Suite -— Those Were the Days I think I mentioned that the cloest thing I had in high school to a girl friend was a fan of them. At the time, I rolled my eyes. But this is a pretty good song. Lion — Never Surrender This is like as generic an 80s movie rock song as it gets, but it's catchy Time Feehan — Where's the Fire Apparently he's a Canadian Kenny Loggins. Seriously, even his first band was called Footloose (although it predated that movie) LaMarca — Hold on Blue Eyes Sounds sorta like a John Waite song. I know sampling is done in pretty much all genres of music, but you give a skilled hip-hop producer a song and he can create some pretty amazing stuff. Madlib is a master at it. Accordion samples Experience Fancy Clown samples That Ain’t the Way You Make Love Kanye is great at it too. Testify samples Innocent Til Proven Guilty Heard 'Em Say samples Someone That I Used To Love J Dilla was God like. Two Can Win samples Only One Can Win Bye samples Don't Say Goodnight A good sample gives you a sense of nostalgia and the excitement of hearing that song as if it has no connection to the song it samples. It's a beautiful thing. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Yeah, I agree. My favorite is Red Kult - Call Me which samples Stevie Winwood and some other song. Sonic Colo(u)rs - Planer Wisp Act 1 This music is not catchy, it's not epic, it's just... Beautiful. Yes, it's repetitive. Yes, that electric guitar at 00:53 shouldn't be there, but there's something in it that makes me feel... Relaxed. In peace. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member You know, I have watched probably well over a 100 movies that were originally in Italian and dubbed into English by Italians. Most of them are much worse than in that video. What's worse are the Godzilla movies. It's like they pick a random school in Japan and pick out a few 10 year old boys to do the dubbing. And then when they need an American to appear in the movie, they don't get an actual actor, but apparently someone who happens to be living there for whatever reason. That actually worked out well when they got a wrestler (or something, the guy in Godzilla Final Wars), but most of the time it's awful. And that Sonic song seems too busy to be relaxing, like there's a background track doing something else besides the main melody. It's not bad at all, but just a little distracting. This is relaxing to me, one of my favorite albums. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5xpe6CBY0U POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Not relaxing enough, you say? Try this one instead. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member This is the most '80s thing i have seen, well, since the '80s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wePTvg9IZdM And this is a song that apparently samples from Dragon's Lair (the game). Or at least an ad for it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRffez98uYY POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Isaac Rebirth's soundtrack is a mixed bag. Most consider it better than the original one's, but I think that Vanilla's first two chapter's musics are wonderful. Then I heard Rebirth's Sketches of Pain. It's already awesome on its own, but when the guitar starts playing (after 2:15, if you're lazy enough not to listen to it), it becomes one of my favorite themes ever. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Most video game music sounds alike to me, but in that case, the guitar makes it stand out. And here's a much less depressing 80s fantasy movie, the theme to Neverending Story (and for onmode-ky, a Jpop version which is uh, actually pretty good) You know you've been watching too many '80s videos when you start to get the urge to buy some leather pants. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member I'll never get the urge to buy leather pants, no matter how many '80s videos I watch. Or leather pants sales pitch videos. While we're on the subject of songs from 80s fantasy movies, here's "Hitomi no Naka no Far Away", from the 1989 movie adaptation of a tiny portion of Mamoru Nagano's massive manga space epic, The Five Star Stories. Feels like quite the 80s song. Looking at my manga library, I find I have about half of the American release of it. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Hmmm, there's a lack of dancing (20+ year old) school girls in that video. No wonder it only has 250 views compared to 3 million. Hawk the Slayer has a pretty epic theme, though it sounds somewhat like Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.. And then there was Clannad's theme song to Robin of Sherwood POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # Sniper D. Luffy Member Pokemon TCG: Club masters duel music This one just funny, Imakuni theme POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Nuclear - Mike Oldfield Also known as MGSV's theme, apparently. (Which I think explains why he's kinda depressed, getting cheated out of money like that) POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member I'm not sure why I never posted about this, but here is my favorite arrangement of the Doctor Who theme. It's the Second Doctor's, which is similar to the arrangement used for the Third and Fourth but with two extra measures in the introduction. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Did you know there is a disco version of the theme? POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member Money - Pink Floyd (Live) Even though this version lacks that "money" sound for obvious reason, this one includes some neat guitar parts here and there. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Did you know there are disco versions of Pink Floyd songs, including Money? (What's funny though is most of that disco album is older stuff, like Interstellar Overdrive. But seriously, I really kick myself for not seeing them on that tour. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member So apparently China has a Lady Gaga counterpart http://youtu.be/mxzgwJ8tSE0 POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member It looks like Jeremy is currently in a state of discomania. Save a Prayer - Duran Duran POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Well, it's not really disco, but there's a DMC mix of that, DMC being a company that would remix songs for DJs to play in clubs.. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # Atariboy Member Here's a good 80's song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngmakCXGe7M POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member There's a really nice club remix of that. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member The Next Door (Indestructible) - Exile Street Fighter IV's amazing theme. Waiting for Jeremy to post a disco/club version for it. I'd really like it. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member Yow, that disco remix of the Doctor Who theme is pretty terrible. It entirely drops the original, signature bassline, and it even butchers the actual theme melody (whether intentionally or out of ignorance, I can't tell). POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member They changed it to be funkier. Which I think works, but it is a little weird sounding if you are used to the original. There's a second disco version, less popular, but closer to the original. And this is the best I can do for Street Fighter POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member Hey, that second disco version is pretty good. I like it. Thanks! I like it better than this 1980 rendition of the theme that was arranged by the composer, Ron Grainer, himself. He composed the theme, but the actual implementation of it for airing in 1963 was done by Delia Derbyshire (and assistants) at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop; he composed something simple for them to work with, knowing that the sounds the Workshop would be generating would be difficult and time-consuming to produce, and they took it from there. So, the final sound of it was beyond what he had personally envisioned. According to the description for it, the arrangement linked above is his own work . . . and I have to say I don't like it much. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I don't know, that would be perfect for an American version of the show where he was somehow forced into being a cop or P.I. Maybe starring Telly Savalis? "Who loves you, jelly baby?" Did you listen to that "Vangelis" version? That's really good too. POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member America, F**k yeah! POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member Man, that set and the recording being on black and white videotape makes it look a whole lot like early Doctor Who. Anyway, yeah, that Vangelis-style version wasn't bad. I do think the instruments should have had more reverb or echo added, though. The notes sounded a little too discrete for me. That's what I always think about Darius Gaiden's "Self." POSTED 4 YEARS AGO # AXM Member That one still relatively IS a final boss theme, with all the chorus and stuff. And we all know how weird Darius's soundtrack is. But MARIA comes from a series known for his either upbeat or outright heavy metal soundtrack. Aren't there Italian music artists that they play? Or is it a mix? (Though come to think of it, Bruno Mars is pretty much an Italian name...) We don't get much stuff from other countries with the exception of the UK, and even there, a lot of times UK artists are much, much bigger in the UK than the US. Golden Earring is pretty much the exception, and they don't sound like they are from the Netherlands. All the rest of that URL is stuff for tracking, statistics, marketing, etc. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Yeah, but it's easier to just copy and paste the whole url from your browser. Anyway, that's good, Huicho. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member This is probably the wrong place to ask, but I don't know any better place. Does anyone who can remember the 1980s, remember if the Police had a music video for their song Synchronicity II? POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member Wait, mainstream techno with autotune sprinkled in for good measure... That is THE definition of terrible. You come out better listening to Ke$ha or Lady Gaga, or that David Guerillagutta fella. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member House, not techno. And you mean David Guetta. (Sorry, I take dance music seriously. It's one of my worst flaws, along with being too handsome) The only guy in the Village People who could actually sing, Victor Willis, left it back in the '80s for a solo career (which er, didn't go well). Thus presumably the auto-tune being needed. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member And I actually used to be into Weezer at one time. Although I preferred Laverne & Shirley. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Still, I wonder when people disappear. Nigel Dawson released a bunch of great progressive house tracks in the mid-late 90s under the name Dominion, then just vanished at the height of his popularity, seemingly. The Gate Ultraviolet Fortunes Lost Without You POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member I haven't sat down and listened to a rap album in a long time. When it comes to rap, I have a very particular ear. I can tolerate the typical cars, hoes, drugs, guns but in VERY small quantities. Well, one of my Xbox baby mommas kept pestering me about Kendrick Lamar. I avoided listening to the cat because I was being an a** by not, and usually people recommend crap from people rapping about eating babies or some crazy sh*t. Not understanding that I'm not interested in suspicious crap, just not typical radio rap. Anyway, long story short I got good kid, m.A.A.d city a few weeks ago and I can't stop listening to it. It's been a while since I've heard an album that tells a good story. Last time I enjoyed a mainstream rap album this much was when Late Registration came out. I hope he keeps it up. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member That's actually not bad. But at least the part I listened to was so slow. Almost more like poetry (albeit with background music) than anything else. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Finally, I found the video I remember. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I think there is only one Season left, actually But it's funny, I always got the impression you were around my age, AB, in your 40s, yet you have the musical taste of my 80-ish father. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member And speaking of 1950s stuff, this is kind of cute http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5j-ipGFcko It's a cover of Generation X's Dancing By Myself as if done by a '50s girl singer, complete with '50s style video. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # Atariboy Member I'm 30, actually. Frankie Valli is one of the big stars from the 1960's when groups like the Beach Boys were big. Then they kind of reinvented themselves to adapt to the changing times of the 70's and had a string of big successes again but I'm not crazy about those songs. For whatever reason, music from this era just always sounded best to me and Frankie Valli was one of the best. The first song I fell in love with was Downtown by Petula Clark, a major hit from 1964, when the song was only 20 years old or so and I've just liked this music my entire life. I can't even remember a time when I didn't like these songs. The 1960's, especially the first 2/3's of it, were music's glory years. 50's were second for me, I like a lot of music from the 40's from stars like Bing Crosby, and several dozen songs from the 70's and 80's reside on my MP3 player. Nothing past 1990 though to the best of knowledge. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Wow, you're much younger than I thought. You're halfway between onmode-ky and O. I was surprised enough to discover that Reaperman at AtariAge is younger than me, too (that guy sounds like a crusty 50-something years old to me). Maybe my worldview is all wrong. You know, in middle school, I had a friend who used the expression "for crying out loud." It was something I'd only read in books from decades ago, and so I always thought he sounded like he was 30 years too young. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member This is kind of neat. Music that sounds like it's from the '80s, but isn't http://newretrowave.bandcamp.com/album/the-80s-dream-compilation-tape-vol-2 POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member I kind of guessed Atariboy was in the 30 range. Other than his old folk taste in music and movies, he gives off that 30 vibe. The only person I can't seem to tell how old they are is Freelance. I want to say she's around my age, but I swear I get a 60+ vibe from her sometimes. I was checking the free music section on the Play store today. Supposedly it provides us with music from the future of music. It just ends up being a reminder that the future is going to suck. But I saw a song that featured Q-Tip. That alone made it worth a listen. Turned out to be a really soulful track that I ended up enjoying a great deal. [link] The video is real hippie though. [link] POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member For a minute I thought you meant these guys http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XjYcy94kGM Q-Tip? Is there a musician named Klee-Nex? Or maybe Drain-O? It seems like almost every sort of music today is pop, the stuff shoved down consumers throats by record companies. Okay, sure, there is some slight difference, you have country flavored pop, and hip-hop flavored pop There has always been pop, but usually there was other stuff that was popular. How many bands sell out stadiums these days? I guess maybe U2 still does, but I can't think anyone else. And I think Freelance was gaming in the 1990s, so that likely makes her 25-32 or so. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Okay, according to Last FM, there are 3 artists who have used the Kleenex name (one a punk band, so meant to be ironic), and four Drainos. The oldies stations around here will be playing nothing but after Thanksgiving. The guy from the Eurythmics and some saxophone lady https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhSx8uKdD5o POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member A CD of 8-bit remixes (with vocals) of 80s American pop songs (though they're neither all American nor from the 80s, I believe) is set to release in Japan shortly from 5pb. If you're thinking the singer HIMECHA has pretty good English pronunciation, I think that's a new spelling of HIMEKA, who's a Canadian living in Japan who won a singing competition several years ago, her debut being the first opening title of the Valkyria Chronicles anime. I think Canadians can speak some English, eh? POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Those don't really sound 8-bit, it sounds like they just auto-tuned the vocals. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member The instrumental parts are played by a Famicom, hence the "8-bit." POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I'm pretty sure the Famicon doesn't auto-tune vocals. And with a song based on an old Fritz Lang movie (Dr. Mabuse) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-IxPjdHhck I miss the days when women looked like this POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member I do miss women having hair like that. The expression, not so much. From the 3-disc collection of Ys original and arranged music that came with Ys: Memories of Celceta's Silver Anniversary Edition, I've gotten kind of addicted to "Lilia ~English Version~". The arrangement is from 1989, but, to my ears at least, it has a very 70s feel to it. String section harmonies, saxophone solos, and a mood which probably wouldn't feel out of place on The Love Boat. Very sweeping, romantic sound. The singer is Akino Arai, who's sung a fair amount of songs for anime, including Outlaw Star's ending themes, the mesmerizing "Voices" in Macross Plus, and a few Record of Lodoss War songs. This is the first time I've ever heard her sing in English, though, and I'm impressed with her pronunciation. Not perfect, but quite good. Oh, wow, the LSO has performed an arrangement of this (in a suite with other Ys melodies) as well. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Well, she's German. That's happy for them. That's pretty good. Can't understand half her words, but yeah, very '70s POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # Atariboy Member 25 hours to Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Is it actually Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, or just people claiming to be them? Like the Village People, none of them are the original Village People, they just call themselves that. And I wonder if they will perform any of their disco era songs? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBmYBPbrKXU POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # Atariboy Member Only the lead singer Frankie Valli is still there. The others are replacements. I imagine that December 1963, My Eyes Adored You, and Grease definitely will be sung for his Disco era stuff since I think all were #1's. But it's the 60's stuff like Rag Doll that I'm going there for so I hope he concentrates on that. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # Atariboy Member Was a 13 hour trip but it was worth it. I was about half the age of the average person in the audience, lol, but he still sounds great and all of my favorites were sung including two I didn't think were too likely (Silence is Golden and I've Got You Under My Skin). What should've taken 3 hours getting there took 5 because I had to travel through the Lake Ontario snowbelt in the worst visibility conditions of my life. For about 20 minutes, I didn't think I was going to make it thanks to blowing snow bringing visibility down so much where we were using the side windows to see where the edges of the road were more than the front windshield. Got on the interstate since I was scared of oncoming traffic and got in a convoy doing about 10mph with their 4 ways on until we cleared the snowbelt. I think being higher up helped get us out of the blowing snow too since I could see a little on there. Then, a long detour home to avoid the snowbelt. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # Atariboy Member Forgot to say that they did do Swear'in to God. They also did My Eyes Adored You, December 1963, and another one I hear frequently from the 70's that I can't recall the name of off hand (No Grease but I assume there are rights issues there). And he did basically every one of his 60's songs that I love. He performed for about 1:40 minutes too which apparently is somewhat rare for singers. I was under the impression it would be about an hour. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Who Loves You? That was their first big hit in the 70s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3sOqch0hV0 He's probably just sick of Grease. Arlo Guthrie almost never sings Alice's Restaurant anymore. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Also it's kind of funny that while known as being a falsetto singer, almost all of his disco stuff was sung in a regular voice. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member I've been really vibing to this track from Pharrell and Daft Punk. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member That is really good. I don't like the Daft Punk distorted vocals at times, but the rest of the song is really good. POSTED 5 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Still on a '90s kick. Anyone remember Mono? 9. Anyone heard when Atari Flashback Classics will go on sale? We're nearly 2/3's of the way through July right now, so it seems like they'd be saying something if they're going to stick to their July release window.
  10. You two are probably the only two registered users at AtariAge that had to cheat on that question.
  11. If I do off topic, I may temporarily make this a private club for a few days. I noticed when I was posting all the stuff yesterday that activity updates were popping up in the recent activity bar at the main AtariAge club page. While there aren't many public clubs right now, I don't want to irritate anyone with it being overran for a few days by my porting over of some of our old threads. After I'm done with that, I'll take it public again.
  12. Always_Serpico Member I love Get Lucky. It sounds like it came straight out of the 80's. [link] POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member Radio X. And yeah, Wild Arms is about the only video game whose music I really, really like. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member We don't see you around these parts much these days, Huicho. I get it though, onmode-ky makes me want to take a break for a while to. Some of the best music I've ever heard has been game music. I'd have soundtracks out the butt it they weren't so expensive. The Japanese ones I mean. Other than games from thatgamecompany I don't think I've played a western developed game that had a good soundtrack. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member My mind just pretty much filters out video game music, with a few exceptions like Wild Arms and er, that one Final Fantasy theme. And this, from Gyruss. That is awesome. Was amazing in the arcades. I guess part of the thing is I just don't really like slow music. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Huicho Member I have been lurking around here almost everyday. I just have not have the urge to post. Lately I have been occupied practicing Marvel 3 and completing Wild Arms. When I am not playing, I am reading. I haven't been on my computer all that much lately. I refuse to play Wild Arms if I have to play with the volume off. For instance, I was at a place that was quite noisy, and I just did not have the same urge to play that game. I need to play with the volume on. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Yeah, it's like in the old Westerns that inspired Wild Arms, they are a lot worse without the soundtrack (usually I don't care about music in movies, either). 13. onmode-ky Member Here is a rather well done video, recommended by Austin Wintory, the composer of Journey. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I thought Steve Perry, Neal Schon, and Jonathan Cain were the composers of Journey.... Anyway you want it... POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member Ah, Journey. What wasn't right about that game? POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Aaron Jean Member Here is the last Drum and Bass track I made with Beaterator for the PSP(in 2011 I think). There's another as well, but it's not as good. I do wish there was a way I could get Beaterator again. I should move on to something better one of these days. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member That's pretty good. I got Beaterator the day it came out and in that time I've only made these two tracks. Made them using what was already available. I have not the slightest idea how to make music. I have the interest, but like everything else, I just don't want to be bothered. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member That's why I learned to DJ - it's sort of like making music, except it's relatively easy. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member This is my favorite track from the Revengeance soundtrack. It's what made the final boss so epic. The game and the soundtrack work perfectly together. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member That sounds perfect for an '80s movie. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member And this is interesting, orchestral trance with a real orchestra, apparently http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nxEbduZO5k POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Huicho Member Man, I completely abandoned this thread. Here are some tracks to make up for my absence. https://soundcloud.com/suicidesheep/dawn-an-ambient-mix Nice tracks Aaron and O. What I really like about that DnB Aaron, is that it's actually DnB and not Drumstep. I rarely hear stuff like that because DnB networks just post a lot of Drumstep. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Aaron Jean Member This is my first Beaterator Song. I guess I forgot about this one until now. It's sort of an instrumental Hip-Hop track. I should add a bass track to this one day. That's really the one thing it's missing. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member That's pretty cool. It reminds me of the song/clip that plays at the end of the Scion commercials. Here is another favorite of mine from Revengeance. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Aaron Jean Member I've been addicted to Breakbeat this week, and after a bit of searching(breakbeat is scarce these days!), I discovered Colombo, a Spanish producer and DJ. His stuff is just top-notch. Your Dream Will Go is a particular favorite of mine, but Gods is an even bigger banger. Anyone else know some particularly good Breakbeat? It was Wipeout soundtracks that introduced me to the genre, but I've found it difficult to find stuff on par with that level of quality. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member This isn't very good, but here's another rock (?) band dressed up in Star Trek uniforms http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xK9P-BrfzLE As to breakbeat, that's something I like, but it is tricky finding stuff. All I can suggest is a couple of DJs - Dave London and of course, DJ Icey DJ Icey has some downloads (albeit a bit out of date) of his radio show on his site http://www.djicey.com/downloads.htm Dave London has a bunch of remixes on youtube. His record label does a lot of breakbeat remixes of songs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHvznW3rEZ8 And for progressive breakbeat, Luke Chable puts out some pretty good stuff, though also does progressive house http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIpwESkq-IE POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Sniper D. I'm glad I finally have. I've been listening to the whole North Borders album(Youtube Link) on Music Unlimited. This is the album opener, and one of my favorite tracks: Bonobo - First Fires POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member Cool, Daft Punk is releasing a new album next month. I'm really hoping it's kickass, because I am in dire need of some good new music. I've been at a loss since Kanye started sucking a**. It really sucks to see and hear your favorite musical artist go down hill. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I would actually like Daft Punk if they didn't use the robotic/autotune vocals. And this is very interesting, I think, a disco version of Ennio Morricone's Once Upon a Time in the West (and here isoriginal, non-disco version) POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member I'm not going to lie, the album cover is about 78% of the reason why I want the album. I'm a sucker for cool covers. I remember someone asking about house, I think Cross is pretty good. Justice is overrated, but Cross is a solid album. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Not surprisingly, I like the older house. Like Bad Boy Bill POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Aaron Jean Member Speaking of Justice, I've always liked their remix of MGMT's Electric Feel. Not that it means much nowadays, but they won a Grammy in '09 for this remix. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member Sheryl says, "Buy this CD!" POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member By that rationale, I would own the entire Molly Hatchet catalog Okay, that's actually not a bad album, but still.. (Bonus points if you know the book that piece of artwork was originally used for) POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Or this POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member Eh. That isn't really cool. Nice to look at, but not cool. I don't know what books those pictures were used for, but they are cool as hell. I love how that astronaut is all like, "One small step for ma... HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" That remix is pretty good, but I prefer the original song. My favorite song from that Justice album is DVNO. Back when I had a HUGE crush on Rachael Ray I replaced DVNO with EVOO. Eventually her voice started to annoy the hell out of me so I got over her. I've since replaced my crush on her with my crush on Tina Fay. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Messiah was one of the artists that got me back into listening to dance music (back in the mid 90s), and There Is No Law is one of my favorite songs, but I had never heard the rap version. It's really pretty good (and some of it was left into the album/regular mix of the song) Strangely, a few years later, they released a progressive rock album that sounded like Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Definitely one of the most curious changes in musical direction. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member And speaking of old DJs, here's an interesting mix by Ben Liebrand of the first song of The War of the Worlds POSTED 6 YEARS AGO #
  14. JeremyR Member A game like that should have a soundtrack like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yn2xSNv0TSk POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Hmmmm, now maybe i know how onmode-ky felt about that Star Trek theme getting disco-fied A disco version of Whole Lotta Love (the Zeppelin song) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hq0XzhOvZh4 Eh, not so great. There's some disco version of Pink Floyd songs that work pretty well, but this... POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member And vaguely related, here's a song back from when I used to DJ (sort of, there was not a big demand for trance DJs in St. Louis so my career never got very far...) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYOItzJsZEI That's almost the same mixer I used to have (well, still have it, not hooked up anymore). POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member You were a DJ!? Cool. What was that like? POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Heh, not very exciting, it mostly consisted of sending demo tapes to every club in town and never hearing anything back. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member A favorite of mine by Madonna. [link] Seriously, though, it's time for her to start covering up. It's getting creepy now. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I think that was a long time ago, to be honest. As a kid (well, teen), I had that Penthouse she was in in 1985. She looks much better with her clothes on, it gives the illusion that she's much better looking than she really is. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Speaking of deadly poisons, here's a great song about strychnine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9ul5-uhRW8 Not quite as deadly as cyanide, it was actually popular for a while as a recreational drug. But too much will kill you.... POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Aaron Jean Member This is my favourite Drum and Bass tune: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNH4qmbaHoA I used to practice a bit of mixing like Jeremy, but never got further than obsessing over the perfect playlist. Drum and Bass is hard to mix. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Huicho Member Drum and Bass is a pain in the a** to make. It always sounds sloppy (when I do it) because the whole genre itself has a whole bunch of tracks that are radically different in some way, and to top it all of, the BPM is really high making it hard to actually mix it. That sounds really nice. While I am into EDM, it's nice to hear some Drum and Bass once in a while. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Yeah, that is pretty good. I've always liked the atmospheric sort of drum and base a lot, and a lot of breakbeat in general. But yeah, it's hard to mix. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Huicho Member http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7GmpJ-SxAk I f****** love Deadpool! POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member Here is the video to Kanye's Paranoid. 808s & Heartbreak is my favorite album, period. I love everything about it. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member The guy can make some pretty good music, but I just can't stand that autotune stuff. I guess it's a generational thing, but I didn't like it when Daft Punk did it years ago either. Like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGBhQbmPwH8 Good song, but it had real vocals it would be much better, IMHO. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member I don't have an innate issue with autotune. Plus, I don't listen to the radio, so when it was being used by everyone I completely missed it. I don't hear too many songs that use it, so it hasn't grown old. One More Time is a favorite of mine. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member From the first time I heard this, I hated Autotune http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbXiECmCZ94 POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member That song is gay. I normally never use that word in that context in a public setting, because I don't want to offend anyone, but it is. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member Ha, I remember when I first heard that song, I wondered what the heck Cher was doing, seemingly making herself sound worse on purpose. I don't know anything about ABBA, but this video featuring one of their songs lip-synched by Vocaloid Megurine Lukais remarkably well done. Consider that it was created by a player via the Edit Mode of the PSP's Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA 2nd game (rendered here on a PS3 using the Dreamy Theater add-on--which I'd really like to get someday for my copy of the first Project DIVA). The guy did a remarkably slick job with the choreography and lip-synching. About 2 weeks ago, a game called "Vectros" released for the iPhone. The music in it was done by former Taito Zuntata member (one of the founders) Hisayoshi Ogura. Check out a sample of it here. The full track is available on Amazon MP3 and iTunes. It's the first work of his I'm aware of since his contributions to DariusBurst, its remix album, and the Zuntata 25th anniversary album. By the way, that video has a very brief snapshot of the composer himself. Earlier in this topic, I referred to the super bizarre ending theme of Dragon Half. As I expected, that song made it into Inside Anime Expo's list of top 10 WTF anime songs. To end this post, I'll leave you with this amazing user-made music video done in Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA. I've actually had this particular edit data on my Memory Stick for years, but the visuals in the clip are amped up by virtue of being output by the PS3 Dreamy Theater app. The song is "Information High," a song sung in Macross Plus (one of a great many) by the story's virtual idol, Sharon Apple. The great irony about having Hatsune Miku sing (lip-synch) this song is that Hatsune Miku herself is a real-world virtual idol. But that novelty aside, the video is still remarkable in that its creator actually manages to maintain a bit of narrative--separate from the song's, while still fitting it well. Really, superb work, in both design and execution. By the way, I think the majority of the Dislikes on that clip are from ignoramuses who expected this to be a Hatsune Miku song, oblivious to both Project DIVA's Edit Mode and Macross Plus. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member That's well done but creepy to see a tiny anime character sing like a giant Swede POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member And it's funny, I really don't like much later rap/hip hop, but I absolutely love the early stuff like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gq8mc3fFhuM POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member I enjoy old hip-hip, but it's rare that I actually buy any. Don't know why. Whenever Mother came on the radio (San Andreas), ESPECIALLY if I was in an attack helicopter, a whole city worth of people and cops would be dead by the time it was finished. Such a badass song. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Probably the only game whose soundtrack (of non-video game music) I liked was Quarantine, which was sort of like Crazy Taxi except you ran over people. For some reason, they got a bunch of songs from alternative Australian bands. [link] WARNING! Explicit content. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Aaron Jean Member On the weirder experimental side of things, Amon Tobin's ISAM is an incredible collection of, if not songs, then textures in sound. What textures they are, though! There's slurps, warbling whooshes, springy metallic tension noises, and eerie female vocals(which are actually modified sounds of Tobin's singing). If you're into this kind of sonic experimentation, the full album is up here. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Interesting. When I was younger, I used to be a big Negativland fan, which was an experimental-industrial group, mostly famous for getting sued by people who they borrowed sample from (like U2 and Pepsi) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ABXBX8BmGM Legendary Pink Dots too, though they were more music, less samples. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WHJ_z14MIY POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I keep watching this one youtube channel (or uploader or whatever) because I keep trying to get into Psychobilly. But they also post some other weird stuff like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ww8lovvwHtQ It's a heavy metal band apparently fronted by an opera singer. It's certainly one of the strangest things I've heard. Or seen, though I feel bad, it's like a lady version of Meatloaf. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Here's another song from the 1980s I forgot about Honeymoon Suite - New Girl Now The closest thing I had to a girlfriend in high school was a big fan of them. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Aaron Jean Member The composer of the excellent adventure game Machinarium, Floex(Tomas Dvorak), has a great album called Zorya. You can listen to the whole thing on his bandcamp page. It's Nu-Jazz with plenty of Floex's clarinet playing throughout. "Precious Creature" is a standout, being the only track with vocals. The whole album's got a very unique sound, and the warm clarinet tones compliment the harsher electronic backdrops very nicely. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member One of the things I loved about Beast Machines, other than how freaking awesome Cheetor was, is the song used for the intro. [link] I REALLY regret not buying the series when it was 50 bucks, because now price jackers have done what they do best: be assholes. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Cheetor? 15. JeremyR Member This song has been one of my absolute favorites for 35 years now. I got the album when I was 6 (on both 8-track and vinyl) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60A1yKc2hi4 Absolutely silly video though, but at the same time, it illustrates how people were comfortable wearing outlandish fashions. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member Yeah, that . . . that is weird. And besides, who in their right mind would wear a red classic Starfleet uniform? Got a death wish? "In Memories KO-TO-WA-RI", from the soundtrack to the Rurouni Kenshin prequel OVA series. I used to listen to this track on the CD over and over. It's the music that plays during the series' final scenes, alternating between mournful and violent, wrapping up the heart-wrenching story. Composed by Taku Iwasaki (also composer of Read or Die, in much lighter fare). He has some lovely strings work. To this day, I maintain that the Kenshin OVA is one of the finest stories ever animated, on top of being one of the most beautiful works of animation. Wish the Blu-ray weren't so damned expensive. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I dunno, the worst thing that happened to Uhura on the show was kissing William Shatner. And Scotty never got into any real trouble. Almost eerie, actually. Looks like me when I went off to college (my parents made me get a haircut) POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Well, not everyone can look like a singer of a Canadian progressive rock band from the 80s, ya know. (At least it's not Geddy Lee.) Anyway, now for something completely differently, a game soundtrack (sort of), apparently some of this was in that Miami Hotline game. http://perturbator.bandcamp.com/album/i-am-the-night And the whole soundtrack to that game http://soundcloud.com/devolverdigital/sets/hotline-miami-official POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Huicho Member http://soundcloud.com/aleksander-vinter This guy is legend. He makes outstanding music, and now he is currently making video games. He currently has one in the works and he is going to use his music as a soundtrack! Savant is the best! POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member That sounds sort of like the Phantom of the Opera song, Toccata in MInor D, I believe. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member I'm starting to wonder if music has become so terrible lately that people have adapted in order to still enjoy music, or has music always been terrible but I just never noticed. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I dunno. I think thanks to the internet it's now possible for someone truly talented to be discovered. At least in the EDM genre, it's thriving thanks to places like Soundcloud and all the radio streaming. But if you mean popular music, from record companies, then yes, I think this is probably the worst it's ever been since records were invented. Sheet music even. Popular music was always about marketing, but there usually had to be at least a core of good music. Now technology has advanced to the point where that isn't necessary anymore. And people seem so jaded that they don't care that artists are phony. Milli-Vanilli was terrible, but at least when they turned out to be fakes they were banished. Now it seems they are embraced (that Lana Del Rey in particular, but Ashley Simpson before her) Beyond that, rock has gone from mostly dead to just plain dead. Rap is still alive, but has followed down the pop music path, sort of missing the whole point. Indeed, I think part of the problem is that passion has gone out of music. At least mainstream music. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member And just for the heck of it, some of my favorite mid-late 90s songs (since I seem to be mostly using my Vita to watch music videos on) Posies - Dream All Day (another singer I sort of look like) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lM1U78RLChY Ned's Atomic Dustbin - Kill Your Television http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yan77UKYcg4 Catherine Wheel - Black Metallic (looks like they were going for a The Shining vibe with the video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtTqR9oZX6Q Robert Plant - Calling To You http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9Fjrc_4nOQ Coverdale/Page - Take Me For A Little While (I listened to this album a lot after getting dumped in college. I'm not sure it helped, but it was appropriate at least.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtfM2CozoAo Dubstar - Stars (Motiv8 Mix) Kind of weird, they did a new video for the remix, the original version is sort of trip-hop, this is more dance. Had a hell of a time finding the cd for this, store clerks would keep insisting I wanted "Dogstar", which apparently was Keanu Reeves' band (I guess Woah and Pinnochio were taken). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92t3L2otUfU Front 242 - Crushed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2PiDF6LDeg 2 Skinnee Js - Riot Nrrrd (From the somewhat short lived Nerdcore genre, but this is actually good. The whole album is, actually.sprawled in the hall like Anthony Michael has to be one of the greatest lines ever) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeLMckmfiI8 And here's the sound http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmFLMLfJPas Why do record companies do that? They complain about a video with music, so Youtube removes the music, but then others upload just the music and no one cares POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member It's pretty asinine. I don't get why the companies even care as long as no money is being made. It's not just music either. Sega was pulling videos for one of their games, Guardian Force or something. WWE is having videos of their events taken down. Which sucks because I occasionally watch wrestling on YouTube if I'm in the mood. Calling To The Night. My favorite MGS tunes. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Atariboy Member Here's a favorite song of mine. Been in love with this song since I was about 4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abOzcjxNJ30 POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member That is a pretty good song, but I prefer the disco version of it. She did a handful of disco songs, actually. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Atariboy Member My speakers are unplugged but I'll be sure to check it out soon. Here's the earliest song I love of her's. Sadly it's all but forgotten now but I've probably played it two dozen times the last several weeks after discovering it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEhL07UCkb4 She's also a fine actress. And she recorded her songs in about a half dozen languages which makes her achievements seem even more amazing. Wish I had saw her in concert a decade ago when she wasn't too far away. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member I thought Downtown came out way before the 60's. I imagine that with an enjoyment of such music that you have a hard time stomaching today's music. I may be wrong, but I've never heard anybody who was a fan of something like Baby Lover say how much they love them some Gaga. Edit: I don't mean "something like Baby Lover" in a bad way. It's a rather nice song. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I also really liked Julie London. She was an actress on my favorite show as a kid, Emergency!, but she was better known as a singer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWNJmM8GLy0 POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Atariboy Member She also acted in movies. I've seen her in a couple of Western's from the 50's over the years. Emergency! is actually one of the few 1970's shows that graces my DVD shelving. All six seasons and the post season 6 tv movies are in my DVD collection. And the show it was spun-off from is also there in its entirety (Adam-12, the best police show ever made). Nothing yet for Dragnet though which is what Adam-12 originated from but someday I'll buy the four seasons from the 60's/70's revival of it (I wish I could buy the 50's seasons on DVD since that was the best era of the show but they're locked away in vaults unlikely to ever be seen again). "I thought Downtown came out way before the 60's." Downtown was one of the top hits for 1965. One of the best years ever for music with releases like Downtown, Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers, etc. "I imagine that with an enjoyment of such music that you have a hard time stomaching today's music. I may be wrong, but I've never heard anybody who was a fan of something like Baby Lover say how much they love them some Gaga." I couldn't of even told you she was a singer (I've heard of the name though). So you'd be quite right. My music interest really starts to decline right around the tail end of the 1960's. There's relatively little from the 1970's that I'm crazy about, very little from the 1980's (And what little there is often came from groups and people like The Beach Boys and Roy Orbison that were popular years earlier and enjoyed brief revivals in the 80's), and hardly anything from the 1990's (And the little bit there is all Country). There isn't a single song I'm aware of liking from the 2000's. As far as my taste in music, movies, and television go, it's all about the 30's through the 60's (And 50's and 60's for television since obviously it wasn't around earlier). There's the occasional modern movie that I enjoy but they're few and far between (I've watched You've Got Mail which was a remake of a favorite of mine called the "The Shop Around the Corner" from about 1940, Saving Private Ryan, Apollo 13, and Space Cowboys in recent months and enjoyed all of them). Since I seem to like some of Tom Hank's movies, I'm keeping my eyes out for Sleepless in Seattle (A remake of An Affair to Remember which is one of my favorite movies) and The Money Pit (A remake of Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House which is another favorite). But I guess this is a music thread so I'll shut up now. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member This is a personal favorite of mine. The video is pretty high up on my favorites list too. I REALLY hate Robin Thicke though. How fair is it that he is attractive and can sing!? That's like an athlete poking a handicapped kid in the eye before a foot race. You already have the advantage, why go for the overkill!? Oh well. That's the only song by him that I like, so it's not like I'm reminded of him too often. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Other than rock and rap, I really don't like male vocalists much. Some exceptions, but not many. And funny enough, I actually like a Gaga song. That Just Dance is pretty catchy. It would be better without the autotuned vocals. I don't get why people who have good voices use that POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member That's what's so scary about Gaga. I think everybody has one song they like from her. I like that one called Paparazzi. That's why it's so hard to get rid of her. I think she does it on purpose. "What's on the agenda today? Oh, yeah! Never saw the music video before, though. Still makes no sense, but at least the Who theme rendition is pretty good. What does "KLF" mean? That three-letter abbreviation actually refers to a type of military mecha in Eureka seveN. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I absolutely love the KLF. It means (supposedly) Kopyright Liberation Front, since they used a lot of samples in their music. For that song they sampled from Gary Glitter's song Rock and Roll (part two, I think). They actually wrote a book on how to succeed in music by stealing samples from popular songs. Anyway, their stadium house trilogy, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJqH5g67IiU , was a big reason I got back into dance music in the early '90s. (I think that first video must have inspired the Snuggie) And that other song sure doesn't sound like Paul Rodgers or Jimmy Page. Must be a different Firm. Better than Voyager though. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member Ah, the classics that were introduced to me by Vice City. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member . . . Well, now you're just trying to make me cry. If there were a disco gene in me, it most certainly would have been killed just now by its fellow genes. That was horrendous; in particular, I can't believe anyone would do that to Goldsmith's Klingon theme, of all things. It's like doing a heavy metal (or, hey, disco) remix of music from Journey. To paraphrase JeremyR: if that doesn't want to make you cry out in anguish . . . . POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member If Star Trek's dignity could survive this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPh12Q7cpeE , then I think it can stand being discofied. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member Kirei Na Kanjou - Noir Ending It's been stuck in my head since watching the series. POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member I didn't mean the dignity of Star Trek itself, which most recently had to suffer the complete marginalization of its entire history in favor of one where Vulcan no longer exists. That's not what I was talking about. Discofying those specific pieces of Jerry Goldsmith's music is what I'm objecting to. Some music simply should not be rearranged into certain other genres. Have you heard Celine Dion's rendition of an AC/DC song? Well, okay, that wasn't another genre so much as just a poor cover. But the feeling is similar. Speaking of rearranging music into genres to which they don't belong, the ending theme of Dragon Half gets a pass because it's completely bonkers. The OVA is also one of the funniest things I've ever seen; it literally made me fall out of my chair laughing, for the first time in my life (which was maybe 12 years ago). POSTED 6 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member To me, that's the wonderful thing about music. It can be arranged, covered, remixed, sampled, and twisted in all sorts of ways. Yes, sometimes the results aren't what I like, for instance, Boys of Summer by Don Henley is one of my favorite songs in the world. But then 10 or so years ago, someone came out with a pop trance version of it, which honestly, makes me shudder. But it was popular and it brought the song to a new audience, which I think is a good thing.. Hope you enjoy this mix by MerKurY POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member That was pretty good. Hope he keeps on practicing. It has been a while since I posted any music, and I'm in a Samurai Champloo mood. Samurai Champloo is my all time favorite anime, and the blend of traditional Japanese culture and hip-hop is one of the reasons why. Battlecry - produced by the late Nujabes, featuring Shing02 Ole - Fat Jon Pretending To... - Tsutchie Tsurugi no Mai - Nujabes Silver Morning - Nujabes Shiki no Uta - Produced by Nujabes, performed by Minmi Who's Theme - Produced by Nujabes, performed by Minmi. This track is insanely mellow. Nujabes was a Japanese hip-hop producer. Much like J Dilla, he died way too young. They essentially were eastern and western counterparts. Nujabes being the calm and mellow of the two, while J Dilla chose a more aggressive sound. Oddly enough, they were both born on the same date and died in the same month of their birth. I suggest that if you do listen to them, listen to them on a medium volume level to get the most enjoyment. Hope you guys like them. Except for Battlecry, you can blast that one! To my surprise, it accepted the vote; I guess it doesn't rely on cookies. In all honesty, though, I'm not qualified to evaluate your track. Not only do I not know the song you remixed, but I don't even have any interest in that style of music. I stumbled across this remix of the Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors opening theme earlier today and was quite impressed. I've always thought the original tune was one of the best 80s cartoon intros, and this remix, while largely sounding quite similar, adds in some pretty cool atmospheric effects. I am a fan of pre-My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Kanye West, pre-Lasers Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def, Talib Kweli. Things of that nature. Yes Random, Ghostface is a member of Wu-Tang. And speaking of Ghostface, here is a track by DOOMSTARKS. DOOMSTARKS is a collabo between DOOM and Tony Starks (A.K.A. Ghostface). It's called Victory Laps. It was produced by DOOM. I personally think they should have called themselves Tony DOOM! DOOM gets around! Here's one by Danger Doom. This was from the collabo album, The Mouse and the Mask, featuring Producer Danger Mouse and DOOM, presented by Adult Swim. It's called Basket Case. It features characters from Harvey Birdman. Here's another Madvillain track from another Adult Swim collabo. It was a collabo between Adult Swim and record label Stonesthrow, it's called Chrome Children. The track is called Monkey Suite. On Thursday nights, which is my hump day, I'll try to post a song so bad, it puts you in a good mood. First up to the stage is a song so damn aweful, the second it starts it's all LOL's! It's performed by a "rapper" so terrible, that other terrible "rappers" hate him! This disgrace to sound goes by the name of Gucci Mane, and the song so terrible that you laugh the whole way through is known as, Freaky Gurl. Welcome to the '80s wing of the Emporium! You can't mention music in the '80s and not talk about one man, Michael Jackson. I know that that name brings up all kinds of emotions, some people love him, some hate him. But despite what you think about the man, it's hard to not love his music! Here are some fan favorites from what could be the most recognized and beloved albums in history, Thriller! Beat It Billie Jean Thriller Human Nature (Personal favorite of mine) But lets not forget these gems not on Thriller! Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough (technically released in '79, but close enough!) Rock With You But no, ladies and gentleman, the '80s block isn't over just yet! I'll be back with more! POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member To me, you can't enjoy '80s music without enjoying the sounds of Phil Collins, or as I like to call him, Phil Freaking Collins! The guy is so freaking epic, he made up a word and turned it into one of the greatest songs known to man! Here it is ladies and gentleman, Sussudio! For some reason, I can picture Freelance listening to this while she's hunting critters! But that's not all that I have from Philly FC, oh no! I also have what is perhaps the greatest song EVER to make sweet passionate relations to, In The Air Tonight! This next one is from Spandau Ballet. I actually have nothing cool to say, other than this song is f'ing AWESOME! One of my all time favs, Gold. The next song has one of the greatest music videos I have ever seen. A lot of the younger guys may recognize the style since it was parodied on Family Guy. The song is by Norwegian pop band A-ha, and is called Take On Me. I doubt it really needs an introduction. It's up there for songs I want played at my funeral! Next up is a favorite from the Vice City days! It was one of the few songs that when it played on the radio, I would just coast down the strip. For those 3:58, lives were spared. It's Dance Hall Days by Wang Chung. There are SO many more gems, but I'm going to wrap it up for now with one from the man himself, Rick James! Or as I like to call him, Rick Motherf*@king James! Ghetto Life ladies and gentleman, and it ain't no joke! Edit: I have to give you guys one more! This one is by the inadvertent king of pranks, Rick Astley! Yes ladies and gentleman, I'm talking about the one and only, Never Gonna Give You Up! POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # Huicho Member Ah, the 80's. I miss dancing to the old school music and doing the moon walk. I loved MJ, he was a legend but, 80's Metal is just plain bada$$. Judas Priest was very popular, and they were the first Metal I have ever listen to. My favorite track from Judas Priest, Painkiller I am going to post some more old Metal later. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member Er, classical? The three examples I gave are all from the Romantic era (roughly speaking, the 1800s), specifically, my favorite. I'm not sure if that's what you were asking. I would say today's successor to classical music would be soundtrack music. At the least, it's pretty much the direct successor of opera. My CD library is largely soundtracks (primarily Star Trek and anime/games). POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # ChaosRandom Member Sorry O, I'll try to link some of my favs on here. Its just that this thread requires more time than I have. Lol. I'm usually on my mobile and it wouldn't let me watch Freaky Gurl. I'll have to catch it at the house. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member Make sure the homies aren't around, don't want their little minds warped by the stupidity! POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # ChaosRandom Member Oh don't worry dude. I even laugh at my own jokes as if they've been told by someone else. I've got some serious issues that therapist would LOVE to try to resolve. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member For opera, I guess, but a lot of classical music was meant for dancing. I mean, heck, in the 1970s, during the Disco era, one of the biggest things was "Switched on Classics", which essentially was disco versions of classical music. And Tiesto, before he sold out, did a wonderful trance version of Adagio for Strings http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EaE0_gQLw0 POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member Disco versions of classical music . . . as if there weren't already enough reasons to dislike disco. But yeah, I guess a fair amount of classical music was originally dances, and not just waltzes. I don't think I'd say a majority was, but definitely a significant percentage. I guess I'll post some of my favorites from the soundtracks I have. "Diva," the aria from Blood+ - composed by Mark Mancina (actually available as an MP3 from his website, though I have the series' actual CDs; the vocals are performed by the same woman, Elin Carlson, who sang the remake of the original Star Trek theme for the enhanced version of The Original Series) "Ifurita's Theme," from El-Hazard: The Magnificent World - composed by Seikou Nagaoka (this isn't from it, but there's a wonderful El-Hazard - The Symphonic World CD I have where arrangements of the series' music are performed by the Slovakia Philharmonic) "Nirvash type ZERO," from Eureka seveN - composed by Naoki Sato (this piece truly captures the thrill and freedom of soaring through the skies, so it's quite fitting for the series) "Chain," from The Vision of Escaflowne - composed by Yoko Kanno (there's certainly a ton of Kanno's music I could have posted, from her wide spectrum of genres, but this came to mind even before Escaflowne's "Dance of Curse"; like all the Escaflowne music, this is performed by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, who have done a few other anime works) "Nightmare," from Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion - composed by Kotaro Nakagawa (Code Geass was full of drama, and its music sold it all with style) "Ilia's Theme," from Star Trek: The Motion Picture - composed by Jerry Goldsmith (think what you will of ST:TMP, but its Oscar-nominated score is absolutely one of Goldsmith's finest creations ever; this particular piece is what played before the movie started) Enough from me. 21. Copying over a popular thread from the sadly soon to be defunct PSPMinis.com forum. Hopefully it can continue to survive here at AtariAge. Always_Serpico Member Things have been getting pretty boring around here (and I'm actually really bored right now), so just like my necromancy thread, I'm doing something a little different in hopes of picking up the fun level. Welcome to O's Musical Emporium! Here I'll periodically post what I deem to be good music. Keep that in mind, it's what I think is good. It's also encouraged that you guys do the same. Make it a big ol' club up in here! You never know, you may find something new that you like, or get people interested in what you already do. Anything goes, but try not to be TOO outrageous. None of that kill a cop, devil is my savior type stuff. First to the stage in the Emporium is a duo of Hip-Hop evil doers who go by the name of Madvillain. Legendary MC's and Producers DOOM and Madlib came together and in 2004 released their critically acclaimed album, Madvillainy. And now I present one of that albums illest tracks, Fancy Clown. Performed by DOOM's alter ego, Viktor Vaughn, and produced by Madlib, the song tales the tale of a man who has had his heart broken by the one he loves. Cheating was her crime, and in an ironic twist of fate the man who she commited the crime with was the villain, DOOM. Ladies and gentleman, Fancy Clown. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # Huicho Member That was pretty cool Ofaliss. Do we just link random music that we listen to? POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member Yup. I just love Metal it pumps me up and to me this is my favorite song. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # Nexus Prime Member I'll go out on a limb and guess that Viktor Vaughn and DOOM is a play on Victor Von Doom aka Dr.Doom. Here's mine. Megadeth - Washington is Next Being into what's being said gets me more into the music. I seems to prefer songs that talk about what most don't have the balls (or brains) to talk about. In this case politcs and religion. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # Nexus Prime Member One more. Muse - Uprising Considering what the song talks about, ironically and sadly most people don't get it. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # Huicho Member Nexus Prime, I love your taste. The Megadeth one is awsome. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member Yup! It was one of the things that attracted me to him, his unorthodox style is what kept me coming back. Very nice pick, Nexus. It's hard not to like a song that speaks out against the BS governments are known for. I hear a lot of music now that pretends to speak out or on touchy subjects. But it mostly lacks sincerity. It's just a pile of what the people want to hear, when they want to hear it. So it's always good to hear music that actually tries to inform and get people stirred up about something. huicho, I like the dark nature of Broken Hands. It's the kind of song I like to listen to when I'm in a, man has disappointed me, kind of mood. And since I'm often in that mood, I may go ahead and download it from Amazon. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member I mostly listen to DJ shows these days. Mostly trance. Suzy Solar is probably my favorite. As far as I know, her show is the second longest running trance show (next to AvB's A State of Trance). Also usually listen to http://zoltar.podomatic.com/">Zoltar's Subterranean. He used to be the program director of the trance station on Sirius Radio, which used to be on DirecTV (which I have). But then they merged and the channel was no more. And a host of other shows from Crystal Clouds, they have legal radio show downloads from a host of fairly lesser known DJs. Manuel Le Saux, Angel Ace, Kaneda, ReOrder are my favorites there. I do listen to it a little, but it's usually from Japanese Metal bands. I find it creeps me out less if I don't know what they are saying! Here's one of my favs from a band known as Dir En Grey. It's called, Dozing Green. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # Huicho Member Ofaliss, I have never heard of Japenese metal bands, I would love it if you would link me some more songs that you liked. I also listen to Dubstep but, I am a headbanger all the way. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member I'll see what I have when I get home, but I don't think I have very many Japanese metal songs, I may not have anymore. But I'll see what I can find. Here are some other songs that I enjoy. Jesus - This one is from Gackt. His music tends to be on the Rock/Pop side. Chicks love him like nobodies business. Good Luck - This one is from Electronic duo Basement Jaxx. It features the soulful Lisa Kekaula. Verbal - Love this one. It's by Amon Tobin, or as I like to call him, Mr. Toonami Himself. The Red - I'm a Hip-Hop fan at heart, so I have to throw in at least one Hip-Hop track! This one has a very special place in my heart. From the critically acclaimed album Champion Sound, the song made an appearance in my favorite Tony Hawk game, Project 8. Performed by Madlib, and produced by the late J Dilla. The two formed the duo known as Jaylib. This one contains explicit content. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # Huicho Member I loved all of them. My favorite was either The Red or Verbal. More songs that I would really liked are all the songs on Black Tides album Post Mortem. I also liked Black Tides song Show Me The Way, which was feautred on MotorStorm: Pacific Rift. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # onmode-ky Member My musical tastes seem to be fairly uncommon these days, unfortunately. But, at least it provides even more variety for this topic. Sometimes I wonder if Liszt wrote this just to show off his technical prowess. This is one of my all-time favorite pieces of music, though this performance of it doesn't play it entirely accurately to its original notation. Another favorite, though this clip is best listened to without watching the video; I don't know what was up with the camera looking around at all those audience members who weren't doing anything anyway. It's just distracting. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member Well in a lot of ways, trance has taken over the classical musical er, space. Or niche. I mean, listen to this, which is one of the hottest tracks of the moment: http://youtu.be/6EP34g7fGwM?t=51s Granted, not as complex or technical, but still... POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # JeremyR Member And this, this is heavy metal - Twisted Sister - Under the Blade http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPklZuIcqBQ '80s metal is the best. Like almost everything else, of course. Burn in Hell SMF Those are my favorites. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # thumbbandit Member I'm a big Prodigy fan (love the early stuff most), I also like Enya. Here's a mash-up of 'Smack My Bitch Up' by Prodigy and 'Orinoco Flow' by Enya... It shouldn't work, but it does. I also like the video, it would make a great mini. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # Huicho Member JeremyR, SMF was something I listen to a lot 10 years ago, It was really good. onmode-ky, your taste in music, it is like I have herad it before. What genre of music is that? POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # ChaosRandom Member Well I'm a big ol redneck so listen to country and 80s big hair mostly. I like a lot of heavy stuff though. Slipknot being my favorite heavy band. I like the song in the Ascention Black Ops zombie map, but I've been too lazy to google it. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # Huicho Member This is Show Me The Way from Black Tide. Another good one from Black Tide, That Fire. This is going to be the last Metal song I post which is called Laid To Rest by Lamb Of God. Here is a nice Dubstep mix called The Echo Room by ZAYLiEN. Another one by ZAYLiEN called Glub. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # Huicho Member Forgive me for all of the messed up links. Just type them on Youtube. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # Huicho Member More Dubstep on the way. They are all from ZAYLiEN Glub The Echo Room Pancakes POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # Always_Serpico Member Sorry I haven't posted any links. Kind of been out of it lately. I'll try to post some soon. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # Games Shrine Member A hip-hop fan, eh Ofaliss? I love old-school hip-hop like Wu-Tang Clan and Ghostface Killah, but also more contemporary stuff like Deep Puddle Dynamics, Sole and Alias. The Red's a pretty good tune. POSTED 7 YEARS AGO # ChaosRandom Member I saw Wu Tang live when I was much younger. Wasnt Ghostface a Wu Tang member? I dont dig Hip Hop nowadays though. Red Solo Cup anyone? POSTED 7 YEARS AGO #
  22. I don't disagree, I was just pointing out that I was never talking about all of that. I was 100% just talking about the job being done at Code Mystics. There's going to be issues here no doubt, but I'm quite certain those problems aren't going to revolve around the emulator that Code Mystics is programming. I'm quite confident that their emulator will run these games well. They'll look how they should, sound as they should, and perform as they should. Any issues will be downstream from that with the physical controls that Arcade1Up is developing, the hardware that they're utilizing like the LCD display, etc. But the emulation side is in good hands and I can confidently predict based off past experience with their products that they'll do their part of the job correctly.
  23. I was talking solely about the quality of their software emulation. You're talking about something very different.
  24. Going to take some getting used to posting over here instead of at our usual home, assuming the site doesn't survive the upgrade process like is feared. Nice that AtariAge has this feature since it will let our small community of regulars stick together. Any of you guys have any threads you're particularly fond of? Been thinking about maybe copying over some of those if anyone thinks anything is worth saving (If I'm not completely sick of the process by the time I finish reposting the review database). I don't think there's much of anything in our off topic thread that would run afoul of the forum rules here at AtariAge. We never really got into politics, religion, etc. So anything we decide to move over should be pretty safe.
  25. You Are the Ref and You Are the Umpire from Four Door Lemon are two different games, but essentially identical. So I’m doing both in one review, so as to save my sanity. One covers soccer (or football, as the rest of the world prefers to call it), and the other covers cricket, which is a sport popular in the UK, Caribbean, Australia, and parts of Asia (India/Pakistan). They are trivia games, not so much about the sports themselves, but the official rules of the sports, putting you in a situation a referee or umpire might be in and asking you which multiple choice answer is the correct one. While I have some exposure to soccer from being a kid, I grew up in the short-lived “indoor” soccer era, where the game was played not on fields, but inside, sort of like in a hockey rink, only without the ice. The idea being that there would be a higher score, and thus Americans would find it more entertaining. Which they did for a while, for about a decade or so. So in other words, I know virtually nothing about either subject (the only soccer players I can even name are Daryl Doran, who actually used to be my neighbor, and Slobo Illijevski, and the only cricket player would be the Fifth Doctor in Doctor Who). This makes it somewhat hard to gauge how relevant the questions are. But at their core, You Are the Ref/You Are the Umpire are trivia games. Trivia games I understand. Anyway, You Are the Ref/You Are the Umpire have three different modes: Sudden Death, Assessment, and Name the Player. All use the basic format of a trivia game—they present you with a question, then you simply have to pick the correct answer out of three choices. Sudden Death and Assessment are similar, as they both present rules situations. The only real difference is that Sudden Death is a game; you are timed, and when you answer incorrectly, the game is over and a score is presented. Assessment just lets you answer the questions leisurely, without a score. I say “question,” but in reality these are more like long paragraphs, often detailing a convoluted situation, complete with amusing illustrations. Sometimes the “correct” answers are rather subjective, though; for instance, one was about the coaches complaining about the officiating of one of your crew members. If you pick “Do nothing,” it says you answered incorrectly, even though in the explanation of the rules, it says you don’t really have to do anything, and you just have the discretion to. So really, it’s not even about the rules, but how the designers of the game feel you should interpret the rules. I don’t know if they got some famous officials to weigh in on this or not. So one wonders how seriously you should take their advice, if you were truly an umpire or ref (Edit: Apparently these are written by a well known official). Name the Player plays like Sudden Death, except that you are presented with a drawing of a player and must pick their name from the choices given. I have no idea who any of these people are, if they are big names or what, and how recognizable they are or aren’t. All I know is that I didn’t come across Daryl Doran or Slobo. I thought I came across The Doctor, but apparently not. I think this mode should have been reversed; instead of being given a face and three names, you would be given a name and presented with three faces. If nothing else, just to mix things up. But also because it sometimes falls into that trap of giving you 3 similar names. Like, say, Henry Blofeld, Harry Bloomfield, and Harrison Bergeron. Which I’ve always found to be unfair in trivia games, because you might have a vague memory of who it is but can’t quite name him. Then you see a name, but which one? They’re all so close. I guess it depends on how hardcore you want your trivia games. While the game itself is extremely simple, they spent quite a bit of time and effort on the artwork, which looks pretty good. There’s a gallery where you can view the unlocked pictures. Of the scenes, not the players. Other than an annoying theme song, there’s not much in the way of sound to this. I think they missed an opportunity by not having “Gooooooal!” played when you get an answer correct, at least in You Are the Ref. It’s really hard to judge a game like this, because it aimed to fulfill a very small niche, one of which I don’t happen to be the target audience. With that said, I think it could have been a better trivia game. For one, who likes solo trivia games? A multiplayer option where you pass around the Vita/phone/tablet seems like something essential to a trivia game. Beyond that, the single player mode is rather limited, because they could have come up with a more in-depth game aspect than just a sudden death mode. That can be fun for a score attack sort of gameplay, but it needs something deeper for solitary play. They’re also iOS ports and, of course, missing features like Internet leaderboards and achievements. Just once I’d like a PS Mobile game (or Mini) that has more stuff than the iOS version, not less. But still, if you really want a cricket or soccer/football rules trivia game, then it’s a solid, if unspectacular, choice. It does what it advertises, and it has a decent number of questions, so you do get what you pay for.
