Nintendo's annual profits sliced in half

Edit: Microsoft also does make PC accessories like mice & keyboards, so they have a limited hardware market too, tho I doubt that is a signifigant source of income for them. -
Nintendo's annual profits sliced in half
Artlover replied to Zaxxon's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Every videogame company starts with 0% market share and $0 from sales, so I guess things look good for all of them! The Big Three companies are all staying in the business through the next decade at least. All three of them are strong enough to survive a down cycle and smart enough to pull something good out at anytime. I think the point here was that Nintendo, unlike MS & Sony, is nearly exclusivly a videogame company. Both MS & Sony could abandon the video game market tomorrow and happily continue making money hand over fist. Why, because they make operating systems, software, tv's, vcr's, stereos, accessories. Their primary bulk of operations concern those other markets places. What does Nintendo have? Video games, playing cards (do they even still make those?), The NFC, maybe they still make pachinko machines? If Nintendo pulled out of the videogame business tomorrow, what would they have to make money from? MS isn't all that strong of a company either in that aspect, since the only other thing they sell is software. But with a 90% worldwide strangehold on that market and their insane wealth, it's a moot point. -
Thats good to know. I know with my Jag, I've always had problems with the RF output. Very VERY snowy & herringbone interference picture, no sound. And the really sick thing is it litterly only takes the rf cable being moved 1 stinking inch to mean the diffence between picture & sound vs. no picture and/or sound. I thought maybe my Jag was just weak or something. Maybe I should have asked myself instead of just wondering about it.

Ok, I'll give you guys THIS one. This definatly has to go on a WTF list.

Try 10's of billions. Specificly just about 30 billion even. Give or take a billion. Lets look at that another way. Even if they pissed away 100 million dollars a year every year, they would still last 300 years. -
Local resalers and pawn shops & junk. As a matter of fact, most of my games came from my local GameXchange within the last 12 months. The rest, 5 of them, I got from directly from Atari along with my 7800 via mail-order back in '85. Still have the pink atari receipt somewhere. (Should probably scan it if/when I find the thing again).

Anyone?

Duh..... Really? Oh, never mind, I can already tell there would be no point.

NextBox won't be compatible with XBox

And thats what I don't get exactly. Is having to keep an older console such a chore? You're already keeping all the games for it anyways. What is being gained by getting rid of it? Just need a few A/V switchers and shelf space (and not even that much since some consoles are stackable!) In parting I ask, would the Saturn have been as good as it was if it tried to sport SegaCD/Genesis compatablity? Would the Dreamcast have been as good if it tried for Saturn compatablity? -
If I can address an independant sub-issue here. To be blunt, who cares what YOU do? Thats YOUR choice to give people 2 weeks. Why does that concern anyone else? Why should your personal private business practices be a mandate for everyone? This point has absolutly NO bearing on this topic whatsoever as it's a personaly self imposed restriction based on your personal opinions.

AAAAAAahhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Should we just create the new thread for this now, or let this one morph into it? Hey, Al, how thats ignore all users option coming?

The C128, MultiMega, GBC, GBA and to some extent the Mega Drive (it had circuitry to support the SMS, although an adaptor was needed). C-128 wasn't a console and anything that uses an adaptor doesn't count. GBC & GBA yeah. I was never a handheld guy myself, so I tend to forget they exist. -
One guy with a hand truck can load a semi in a few hours if everything is boxed, stacked and waiting. And somehow, I doubt those 4 million cartridges were all loose. Tho this raises a question. How many cartridges came packed in a case?

Artlover replied to Jess Ragan's topic in Modern Console Discussion
It's not as if since PS2, it's become standard. Besides PS2, the only other console to sport this was the Atari 7800, AFAIK. Well bbviously if I have Gamecube & PS2, I'd want to keep my PS2 since the Gamecube can't play PS1 or PS2 games. As far as the PS2's compatabilty. When did this change? I don't doubt that it has, but I know when PS2 first came out, it's PS1 compatabilty looked pretty poor. Everyone I knew with a PS1 that bought a PS2 when they first came out were all complaining how pixilated and grainy PS1 games looked. I saw that for myself. But to be honest, I haven't followed PS2 because I'm not interested it. So I have no idea what improvements they have made to it. -

Backwards compatabilty: Is it a good thing? I've got mixed feelings. Why is it even an issue? If you already have an Xbox & xbox games, well, what do you need backwards compatabilty for? Are most current xbox owners going to sell or trade-in their current units to get the new one? Somehow, I doubt it. New users who don't have an xbox probably won't have any oriignal xbox games either. They are starting new. Buy Xbox2, buy Xbox2 games. Now, after Xbo2 hits the shelves, I suspect the original current xbox will drop in price like a rock. So if you're really bent on playing the old games, you'll beable to get an original xbox for cheap. Also, what will the original xbox's future be? What are the developers and stores going to focus on? Xbox2. I'm quite sure new games will still be made for the original xbox for years to come, but I'll bet you their frequency will be less, and I wouldn't be surprized if they start to suck. Likely being rushed downgraded ports of Xbox2 titles. Look at PC development too. I bet the Pentium 4 would be a lot better and more efficent if Intel didn't spend decades demanding 8086 backwards compatablity. Backwards compatabilty serves to limit how additions and improvements can be made more then anything else. -
If we did that, then we would have to believe the cost of disposing of a unsold videogame cartridge and nuclear waste are equal.

Draw the parellels? Ok; Atari cartridges: Hard plastic, fiberglass, ceramics, silica. Exposure to a burried ET cart will not cause immediate death. No toxic fumes or run off. Will not negatively impact the envoirment. Air won't be poluted with cartridge bits, nor will water or land or animals. You dig a hole, fill it with crushed carts, cover with cement - Done. Nuclear waste: Uranium, Plutonium, Radon, Tridium, Barium and other nuclear elements in solid, liquid, gas & sludge form. Some of the most deadly products produced by man. Even the slightest trace amounts can injure & kill both immediately and for the long-term. Could and would seap into and pollute soil, water, air and anything living in the area. Landfill needs to be lined, contained drainage for disposal, capped to prevent gasses from leaking, endlessly monitored for leaks - Done in 250,000 years after the natural decay cycle has had time to run. Just like two peas in a pod.

Would you care to actually quote his previous message and specificly address the supossed e-mail exchange that took place because there seems to be discrepencies from both sides. You said he got a noticed it shipped, he said he got a notice a shipping label was created. It's may seem like a trivial point, but shipping label being created does NOT equal being shipped. Also, if what he posted as his first reply to you was infact his real reply, then I'd would have to comment that his reply was not particurly snotty and quite honestly your reply to him, again IF true, was snottier. And unless I persoanly knew you and actually knew this was true, I wouldn't have cared either for the simple and already pointed out fact that, , a LOT of bad sellers on ebay will lie to explain why they haven't sent anything. I'm sure every single one of them insisted they were being honest. Simpling taking someone's word at face value is exactly why so many buyer have gotten screwed over. Is it not? Maybe your using your medical problems as an excuse for everything has made you believe that all excuses are real and justified. The only thing I do aggree with you about this is that he should of e-mailed you sooner about it. Beyond that, no.

I LIKED the idea of MythBusters till I actually watched it a few times. The show has absolutly no credibilty because of those two goofs who love to guess, assume, compromise, pull fictious notions out of their asses, and generaly have a locked idea of predetermined methodilogy. Case in point, their attempt to prove a sinking ship won't suck people under the water. Yes guys, a tiny little tug (or whatever it was) in a harbor is exactly like an oceanliner or battleship in the ocean, ain't it. Or the frozen vs thawed chickens impact tests. It only took them how many trys to prove that there IS a difference. Or the tree cannon. "I made a spoon bit because thats probably what they used, and I couldn't drill as far as needed in 1 day, so it's probably a myth". So long as you understand that the show itself is bullshit that doesn't actually prove or disprove crap, it's a bit more enjoyable. As then it's just about destroying things and crash dummy abuse.

I'd like to see Geraldo Rivera hosts it.

Any particular reason you keep refering to yourself as a 3rd person in "your" (?) message?

More then they actually bother to do? I've yet to see any special effects that looked really real. I've seen plenty of good effects. Van Helsing, The Day After Tomorrow, so on. But you can still tell it's cg, models, forced perspective and so on. Mostly, it's in the movement. CG objects just don't move right. Then again, I'm the type of guy who when watching movies looks for the bloopers and stuff. Color mismtches from overlayed cells, clocks & watches that never change time, background scenery changes, looking for the seam between live action & painted overlays. So I'm probably a bad choice of person to ask an opinion of.
