Your reasons for not owning any "modern" consoles?
Artlover replied to Room 34's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Ok. #1: I don't own a PS2 for 5 reasons already stated in the "why dont you own a PS2" thread. #2: As far as I am concerned, everything before the N64/Saturn/PS1 is classic, and everything after & including n64/saturn/ps1 is modern. My console list goes like this: Atari 2600 (4) Atari 5200 (2, 1 2-port & 1 4-port) Atari 7800 Atari Jaguar Coleco Telstar Alpha Coleco Telstar Ranger Colecovision Mattel Intellivision Microsoft XBox (3, 1 stock, 2 modded w/flashed TSOP (one w/toshiba dvd drive)) Nintendo Gamboy (untested) Nintendo GameCube Nintendo N64 Nintendo NES Nintendo SNES Sega Dreamcast (2) Sega Genesis (2 - Model 1 and Model 2) Sega CD attachment (Model 2) Sega Saturn (Model 2 w/mod chip) Sony Playstation (Original style) -

I had one but got rid of it after a bad experience when trying to fill her with gas. -

How come you don't own a PS2? (Why?)
Artlover replied to RCmodeler's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I do not own a PS2. #1: Still too expencive. (Not to mention that they took forever before reducing it to it's current but still over-priced price of $199). #2: Lack of original games. (Like most concoles, most of it's library are re-hashes of existing labels and/or pc ports. And most of those are on the GC & Xbox too). I guess this is more a personal preference thing. It's simmilar to Mario vs Sonic. The console of choice is the one that has the exclusive title that you want to play. #3: The backwards compatablity is over-rated, and quite frankly, looks worse then a real PS1. #4: The PS2 is only doing as good as it is because it's riding on the PS1 success, not because it's a good console. With that said, the PS1 was also an over-rated, inferiour to it's competetors yet over-priced console. Only reason it made it so big is because Sega & Nintendo dropped the ball, not because they are any great console designer. #5: I don't care for Sony much, period. Mostly because of their unrealistic pricing that effects every single thing they make from blank media to stereos to computers. If I can find a used PS2 in a pawn shop or something for 50-75 bucks, maybe I'll get one. Otherwise, no. -
Well, did find it cheaper anyways @ PlayAsia... http://www.play-asia.com/paos-13-30764035.html

Grrrr, I wish I knew for sure. Thats pretty much the main reason I'm interested in this, so I can use my DC or Sat lightgun with it. I'll probably just end up buying it and find out for myself.

I've never seen homebrews on a new console
Artlover replied to Clock's topic in Modern Console Discussion
If you are technicaly inclined, you can do it for free. Well, 20 bucks for "007: Agent Under Fire" game (if you don't already have it). I doubt I would be allowed to go into much detail here. Hint: "TSOP Flashing". Don't forget about pawn-shops & stuff. You can get tested working used xbox's for $120 easy. -

Yeah. I hate the Xbox for that. I've seen websites that talk about & show screen shots of home-brewed games, but no downloads, because they are all made with XDK. (Too lasy to find a smiley that stomps around a few times then bursts into flames, so just try to visualize it!) I want Pong & XMarbles more then anything else. Mostly just to test these PC based Xbox emus. -
It's me ....Mario....Super Mario Sunshine
Artlover replied to Antneed's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I don't mind about the camera too much. I do aggree you have to spend a lot of time moving the thing around to see what you are doing, but I've played enough games with movable camera's to be used to it. My gripe is the overall visual apperance of the game. Very washed out, like the contrast is too high. THAT bothers the hell out of me. It's such a pretty game, but you can see that some of the detail is lost because of it. I've yet to see any game that really shows off the GC. Even Luigi's Mansion had it's share of annoyances. Color banding. What, the GC isn't 24bit color? It can't do smooth color transitions? Grrrrr. -
I don't care for the S controller much. It's a little too small. If you simply grab it, and hold it in a way where it's nice and solid in your hand's, you can't reach the buttons or d-pad very well. They all end up being under the kuckle instead of the fingertip. The Black/white buttons. Damn near under your palm. Gotta half let go of the controller and shift your hand to beable to use them. Also, the rumble effect isn't any where near as strong as the original controller. IMHO, the original big honkin brick of a controller is the best.

Right. Jpegs should pretty much only be used with 24bit color image sources. Do you still have the original 24bit color BMP? Try converting that to Jpeg using a quality setting of 70% or so. The file should end up being around 50-60k or so and look just as good.

What are the best emulators for the Xbox?
Artlover replied to holygrailvideogames.com's topic in Emulation
Well, the Xbox HD is pretty small. 8gigs across 5 partitions. While this might not be a problem for smaller emu's & rom sets (like Atari-X 2600 emu), it can quickly become an issue with N64 emus & stuff. Unless you upgrade your HD, which creates it's own set of problems. Thou I don't see the big deal with swapping discs. You gotta do that with originals now anyways. So myself, I just burn everything to DVD. If it's small, I make a menued-disc out of it, and put several emus & stuff together on one. Wish there was a memory upgrade for the xbox. 64megs ain't enought for some roms. -
I have a comment. Use JPeG instead. Would have been about 7-8x smaller then that BMP, and kept all the color to boot.

1702. That was the workhorse of the Commodore composite monitors. Indestructable commodore-tan square box. Front & rear jacks. Hard to find people selling them. (A local pawn shop has 3 and refused to sell me any at any price because they use them for testing video equipment). The 15xx series monitors came later, and were fairly low quality. 1084 is one of the better monitors. And the 1084S (stereo) is a dream. I loved my 1084S till the flyback went out. The original 1902 is good too. The 1902A is a piece of crap thou (all 1902A's (magnavox made) are prone to failed solder joints on the flyback & convergance issues).

Using the Blackout to make a buck on eBay
Artlover replied to MrRetroGamer's topic in Auction Central
If I get taken because of my own stupidty, then by all means, feel free to do so. I'll even start. I was stupid and spend $15.00 on a InterAct memory card + for the Sega Saturn without researching it first, and got stuck with a piece of crap that doesn't even work with my unit. Then had to go out and spend another $30 for an action replay. And I feel stupid every time I look at the thing. Yes, there is. If anything that one line there pretty much reinforces my point, "STUPID" people get what they deserve. Anyone that would have fallen for this auction are not simply uninformed. They are "don't even have 2 brain cells to rub together" STUPID! Bad example. Known users, selling known products. No reason to suspect it's not legimiate. It's not like they were selling "make your own 24k gold from dirt with this magic box, only $199.99". Never said they did. It's easy enought for anyone to get taken, even with being carefull. However, stupid people who get taken on account of their stupidty are another matter altogether. - "For sale: free issue of auto-trader magazine. Asking $29.95 + 4.99 shipping." If you buy that, you're an idiot. Another bad example. No, if her purse is snatched as she's minding her own business, she does not deserve it. If the purse snatcher just walked up to her and asked nicely and non treatningly if he may hold her purse for a few minutes and she haipply turned it over. Then yeah, she does deserves it. If the purse snatcher sent her a letter demanding money, and she sent him some, then yeah, she does deserve it. If the purse snatcher put up a web site "virtual purse snatches", and the lady was browsing around and got a pop-up, "you've been virtualy pursed snatched. Put your credit-card information in the fields below", and she did, then hell yeah, absolutly she deserves it. BTW: I don't recall all this outcry over the Ghost in a Jar auction. Even thou that was obviously fake and thus fraud just the same. Guess because that was kinda cute & funny, that makes it ok or something? -
Using the Blackout to make a buck on eBay
Artlover replied to MrRetroGamer's topic in Auction Central
Why does everyone have such a problem with people that do stuff like this? My attitude is that is people are stupid enought to buy it, then more power to him. Great way to make a quick buck. I've got no sympathy for stupid people. Let them get taken, they deserve it. Maybe it will encourage them to not be stupid. -
I've only got 3 games myself. 1 - Wolfenstien 3d 2 - Checkered Flag 3 - Cybermorph And while Checkered Flag might not really be better then Cybermorph, I like racing games more then flying games, so there you go.

Mostly, this thread is inspired by MagicEngine, but a few others qualify as well. Who here has a problem paying for an emulator? What is the real point of emulation? Obviously emulating whatever system is is. But more over it's for preservation. To allow someone who never saw/used a system to be able to do so. To keep the knowledge of the systems around. You don't do that by severaly limiting who can have/use your product. Who is going to pay for an emulator when chances are there are several good FREE ones already avaialble. What are they doing any different then anyone else? What makes them so special that they think they can turn their back on the scene. Ultimatly, it's their product and they can do whatever they what. No one really has the right to expect free software. But I question the validity of the products as they contribute little to the emulation scene on a whole. I for one refuse to pay for any emulator. I simply wont use it if thats the case. In the end their hard work gets lost & forgotten, while I'm happily emulating along. Comments?

Any chance of adding an option to allow users to manualy set their last-visit date. Or maybe this is something that will be in the news software? Any who. I for one really hate it when I've got like 5 pages of new messages, then one way or another my browser exits, then I gotta spend the next 2 hours looking at every forum individualy. Well, to be honest, I don't spend 2 hours. I usualy just don't bother, and end up missing a lot of stuff.
