  1. Audio CD's are fine because the lense doesn't have to jump from track to track. Audio is read in a linier(sp?) manner. Pirated games DO burn out the lense motor because the lense has to move around twice as much to read game data on the inside tracks. Not to be a simple "ditto"man, but I did want to jump in any say ditto, share my own experience. The laser/transport assembly/logic are fully CD compatable, as was already mentioned. The damage a burned CD's causes comes from the excessive and wild tracking many of those games have, as was also already said. There is also another problem, that more has to do with the quality of the rip/packing. I've encounted a few games where the image just will not burn correctly and I'll hear my DC constantly changing the speed of the CD as it trys to track. While it's normal to change the speed while tracking at different spots, I doubt the motor was designed to be constantly doing it by extreme degrees it all the time. I've had my Dreamcast for a few years. Have bought around 60 games for it. Burned around 185. Mostly, because you can hardly find games for sale anymore anywhere. Even my favorite place, GameXchange, only has about 25-30 used titles to pick from, all of which I had already bought (cheaper no less) at CompUSA & BestBuy bargin bins. My unit is still working fine. I simply try to shy away from any burned image that has very excessive tracking, or spin speed issues. I also have another Dreamcast unit shrinkwraped and sitting in storage, just in case. I'm not too worried thou. My experience with CD players of all sorts is that the controlling logic typical fails before any of the mechanical bits do, and I have no reason to suspect the Dreamcast is any different.
  2. Speaking of the voice add-on. Does anyone know if there is a schematic of that thing floating around? I haven't been able to find a real unit, and am thinking of just trying to build one. I would assume it's just a DAC of some sort.
  3. You get the Triforce Map #6 on level 30, but it still continues down to 50, where you'll a piece of heart. Not really worth the aggervation in my opinion.
  4. Ditto to the original post. Sound and animation are excelent, but it's too easy & simple. Not to mention tedious at times. I've only been playing it a little, and am up to the lame triforce search part. I really have no doubt that I'll be able to finish this fairly easy. Ocarina of Time was harder.
  5. Another old Coleco pong game. The "Telstar Ranger" with the detached paddles, and light gun. $1.37. (one of these days, I've gotta update the "what systems do you own" thread.)
  6. Thats a pretty sweet deal. Does it work? Where did you get it.. a thrift store? If that was in any thrift store around here I am sure it would have a $150 or more price tag. Only "laptop" I have ever found was a Toshiba T1100+ for $15.00. I still haven't got it up and running yet. Goodwill. Yeah, it works. P166 MMX, 82megs of ram, 20x cd-rom, 12.1" svga screen, stereo sound. But it sucks because the laptop unit itself is almost useless in the field. No Serial or Parellel ports on it. Just a single propriatory connector to plug into the docking station. The docking station gives you serial & parellel. So basiclly, you have no really easy or convienent way to get info off the machine, particualarly in the field. Other then that, it's a nice machine.

    5200 Repair

Quite honestly, I dunno. I just replaced them all on mine, and it fixed the problem. Might have been only one of them. But they are cheap enough, or were a decade ago. Don't know now, on account it's getting harder and harder to find linear ic's anymore. But that's a rant for another day.
  8. IBM Thinkpad 760XL laptop & docking station. 8 bucks.
  9. 2 HP LaserJet IID laser printers for $23.00 (one was $10.00, and the other was $13.00). 1 HP LaserJet Series II laser printer for $17.00. Contra cartridge for the NES w/box & instructions (in good shape) for $.85.

    5200 Repair

Check the Cmos 4052 mux chips. I fixed a non-working controler issue in my 5200 when I replaced all the 4052's
  11. Today: Intellivision console with the following games (all boxed w/overlays & instructions): Space Battle SNAFU Auto Racing Space Armada (Sears Telegames) NFL Football Star Strike NBA Basketball Major League Baseball Astrosmash Sea Battle All for $9.50.
  12. Uhhgg, Cyrix. They should have paid you to take that!
  13. Today... Pioneer CLD-M90 LaserDisc/CDV/5Disc CD changer for $25.00.
  14. I wouldn't say that . If it was a 2/3 unit, and channel 3 is used, then channel 2 will be avaialble. It's FCC requirements, you can not have two broadcast stations on ajoining channels. There has to be a minimum of one channel spacing. Low power micro broadcasters might have ways around this, but they would also not be a signifigant interference factor unless you lived right next to the guy.
  15. Yesterday, 2 - Atari 2600's (1 4-switcher, and 1 6-switcher) 1 - 2600 power supply. 7 - 2600 carts (various. common to rare 'like Flag capture') 1 - Set of paddles 1 - Driving controler 1 - 3rd party joystick. $ 6.47
  16. I haven't seen any myself and I've looked around a bit. However, keep in mind that the Sega CD is mostly made up of custome surface mount VLSI chips. So it ain't going to be easy to do anything on a circuit level.
  17. I just bought a Coleco "Telstar Alpha" pong game. $1.70. Works fine. Has 4 'games". Tennis, Hockey, Handball, Jai Alai. I love these really old RF devices, before the FCC started digging into them all about shielding and all that crap. This Telstar game has a crystal clear picture via RF. So what if all my neighbors can watch me play on their TV's too. Runs off 6 'C' size batteries too. It's kool.
  18. I always loved Creatures and Creatures II on the C-64. The death scenes were wonderfull.
  19. Are you sure your playing the same game? I played it, and it had random battles constantly. I stopped playing after an hour because I got so sick of it. It was lent to me by a friend who had also become annoyed with it after a few hours. I like Evolution 2. It many ways, it's kinda goofy & childish, but on a whole I think it's better. If nothing else, less annoying. Thou I'd rank Legend of Zelda on the N64 as the best RPG, period.
  20. I'm thinking of taking one of my spare 128's, and pulling the MMU out of it, so I can modify my main unit with the 256kram upgrade. It just seems so time consuming, even worse then the 1700 reu upgrade. Atleast the C-128 can directly access the 256k ram via the bank command, so it would be worth doing at some point I think. Just don't have the time for stuff like that anymore..
  21. Forgot... 1 VicModem 1 1670 modem 1 1700 REU (upgraded to 2 megs) Goes and edit's original post.
