  1. Will there be another Great Video Game crash?

Secondly, will there ever be a return to classic game programming e.g. maze games, slide-n-shoots? (Yeah I know, wishful thinking!)

Lastly, the return of the arcade, or is it gone the way of the drive-in movie theaters?

    Yes, but not like before.

    There already is.

    No, it's gone.

I mean, in the 80's, video games literrally dissappeared. I mean, gone, the only places that had them were people blowing them out the door for <$1

Eh? Where did that ever happen. Never happened down here in Florida. I could talk into any Sears, Kmart, PlayWorld, whatever, and they still had the things. Yes, at a discount, trying to sell them off, but they all still had them tho. Still had them when the NES came out too, that's when the prices really bottomed out as retailers were trying to desperatly free up shelf space for the new generation. There was never a lack of availability, but there were a lot of great deals for people to buy into consoles they couldn't afford before.

  2. "c64 CAN display 16color off the shelf" suggests that there is a certain resolution, where the colors of every pixel can be any of the 16.

It would really be nice if once, just ONCE, an Atari'er could make an argument without resorting to making up their inturpertations of how they think something should be done just for the sake of claiming it doesn't do what it does because it's not how they think it should be.

Really, out of over 200 pages, I've yet to see one argument that wasn't based on some level of self serving double standard. Programming, sprites, sound, ergonomics. This is why comparing several monochome planes against a single multicolor sprite is actually a fair comparison to some people. :ponder:

Are you guys really that dense, or do you guys really think we're that stupid?

  3. Tons of games that required non-standard controllers.

If by many, you mean 1 (2 if you include Japan) then you have a point.

Other then Samba de Amigo and the Japanese only Densha de Go!, I can't recall any games that "required" special controllers.

Most games that supported the use of optional non-standard controllers were still playable with the stock units.

The PS2 had a DVD player, which made it far better than the Dreamcast.

For some people maybe. But you take me for example. DVD player had no impact on me deciding to get one. Didn't care then, still don't care. Didn't buy it to watch movies.

The PS2 had more affordable games, which meant I could afford to own more games

Many games were in the 29.99 and 39.99 price range. Just like the PS2 had it's share of $50 games.

The PS2 was backwards compatible with my PSX collection, so I didn't have to have both systems set up to enjoy their games.

Wow, it took long enough to bring up backwards compatibility to the argument.

Ok everyone, how many people actually care about BC? Hands up. {cuts hands off and throws them in a hole}.

I have never cared about BC. To be honest, I don't like BC as I think it just represents both a waste of development time and a waste of system resources that could have been better used in making the new system just that much better.

And that's why Sega couldn't even give away Dreamcasts
For a system that was only around for a couple of years and still sold 10 million units.......It was quite successfull in this regard and even earned the title of "most successful hardware launch in history". Why the DC failed has already been answered by the people in the know. Saying the PS2 killed the DC is like saying ET killed the video game industry. It was just something that happened at a time when other things were going on. Sega was a company of total mismanagement and financial trouble. That Sega never went belly up and that the Dreamcast got made at all are both rather astounding.

  4. on *MANY* games I've caught HD advance running the drive constantly during HDD gameplay.

I've not noticed this. What version/revision of HDAdvanced were you using?

Because of that, I don't believe that product is really safe to use.

So playing game discs is unsafe too then I assume because they run the drive the whole time too.

  5. Low dollars = modest lie, good for a short time.

Ok, I'm really really tired. I was skimming this and read that as "low dollars for a good time". :ponder:

Thanks for the offer, but no thanks. Unless you're a girl. :P :lolblue:

Anywho, I think I'll go to bed now before I misconstrue anything else.

  6. My god you people are DENSE. THE TOPIC OF THIS THREAD IS "DREAMCAST WAS BETTER THAN THE PS2". THEREFORE MY REASONING FOR USING SALES FIGURES, NUMBER OF GAMES IN THE LIBRARY ETC.

AND ONCE AGAIN, WHAT PART OF SEGA KILLED THE DREAMCAST AFTER 2 YEARS SO OF COURSE IT DOESN'T HAVE THE SALES FIGURES OR LIBRARY DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND?

Seriously, how and why do you honestly believe that shit makes any valid point when comparing a dead system to an active one? :ponder:

  7. This war ain't going anywhere, as is always the case, might as well start another that isn't going to end up anywhere either. :P
Let's just roll gun control and P&R into this and have one galactic sized cluster f*ck.

Jesus, Republicans sure love guns! :D :lolblue: :P

"Indeed. But I think you misunderstand. I am not here to keep the darkness out. I'm here to keep it in. Call me . . . the Guarding Dark. Imagine how strong I must be." -Sam Vimes (Thud!, Terry Pratchett)

Which Discworld is that from anyways? :ponder:

  8. And I don't want to say anything else at the risk of starting a flame war.

Isn't that what the past 200 someodd pages has been? What differences does it make now. This war ain't going anywhere, as is always the case, might as well start another that isn't going to end up anywhere either. :P

  9. although I need to use WiinHip for additional installs.

WiinHip is awesome! Fast as hell. I use it anyways because it's just plain faster then trying to copy the game discs directly, even with the overhead of ripping on the PC side first most of the time (not to mention it works to copy those peksy games that don't like to be copied directly).

  10. I'm at a loss to explain what the trouble is with this 7800 and the new 7800 homwbrews.

I guess I'll just have to keep purchasing 7800's until I find one that plays homebrews and then sell the ones that don't. :)

If I were you, I would take Al up on his offer of a trade. That benefits you in having a working 7800 and benefits Al so he can make sure that the homebrews he ships are highly compatible. :)

    I agree.

That would be the cheapest, easiest, quickest solution and would benefit "everyone".

  11. So, anyone else posting naked tonight? Anyone? Bueller?
I'm wearing nothing but a G-string woven out of my own hair. So, yes and no.

Can you post a picture of you modeling it for us? I need to get ramped up for my night with that pie. :P

  12. Nice joke.

    No joke about it.

I am not doing anything special

Come on. We know you have the Atari plugged into a $5000.00 voltage stabalization unit and you handle it like it was made from fine crystal with satin gloves on and you plug the C64's into a generator with the worst power output you could find and type commands in using a hammer. :lolblue:

  13. I am basing it on unbiased observation. It's crap in comparison to Atari 800/XL/XE machines that I have. None of the Ataris have broken down for me over many years. C64, used only a few times, broke down. It's not an attack but a true statement.

My CBM gear is over 20 years old and it all still works.

Maybe it's just you, or what you're doing to it, or your "I hate C64" thoughts telepathically destroying the things. :ponder:

  14. The earliest announcement that "specificly" states level cap and playing beyond the end of the story is 12/12/2008 from Bethesda themselves.

    http://bethblog.com/index.php/2008/12/12/level-cap-raised/

To be fair, this actually puts it about 1 and a half months after release of the game, not 1 month. You can flame me over the 2 weeks difference if you like, I deserve it. :P

The flat out earliest announcement, period, of Broken Steel and playing beyond the ending is 11/25/2008 that I can find.

    http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3171496

Granted, that one is a bit vague in just saying "Continues the adventure past the main quest" and doesn't mention level cap.

  15. Physcial requirements:

    1. {deleted for space}

    2. {deleted for space}

    3. Applicant must prove, with written documentation signed by a doctor, that they possess a level of visual impairement that meets our minimum requirements {see figure 2b on page 12 of application}. If applicant wears contacts, glasses, or any other device for the purpose of correcting visual defects, their rants must and only be made without the use and aid of such devices.

  16. http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?...amp;RS=03728480

That's the original patent. (Click on images at either the top or bottom of the screen for actual scans with schematics included).

It's both vague and specific at the same time.

Vague in the overall general concept. Specific in as much as he's detailing things such as where resistors and transistors are located in the circuits and how they are used.

Boy, I hope no one else is the world is using two diodes as a rectifier or a transister as a switch. Baer patented those ideas 40 years ago.

*EDIT*: pasted the wrong patent link in.

  17. I get one or two channels that are barely watchable without something like cable, so money goes to cable/phone/internet in one package that is cheaper than having a normal phone line and cable/Internet. And in July of 2008, I joined Netflix for 18 bucks a month so I could watch newer movies and catch up on movies and TV shows I missed over the years.

Uh, you already have the "internet", what the hell you paying for NetFlix for? ;) :P

Thre isn't a 40 year old alive who has the resources to get online that absolutely couldn't afford a modern console, at the VERY least a used one, if that is what they REALLY wanted to do.

What color is the sky in your world? :ponder:

I'm happy for you that you are obviously so well off that you can afford luxuries. You don't speak for everyone. If I had a spare $50-$100, which I don't, rest assured there are a hell of a lot of better things I "NEED" to spend it on besiding gaming. I haven't been eating pasta and ramen exclusivly for the past few months just for fun.

Internet is hardly a luxury anymore in todays world. Shit, a lot of job's tell you to "apply on on-line", with replies of interest comming via E-mail requesting you call them to set up an interview. Can't even go to HR Block or have the city come out and do their regular 10 year home inspection without them asking you for an e-mail address to send follow ups to since they don't want to be bothered with having to call or snail-mail anything. That said, AA is free. Don't see what the big deal is about popping in here to relax for a few minutes between fighting through Unicru applications or how it proves I have money to waste.

Seriously. Quit telling others what they can and can't afford. YOU "don't" know.

  18. I had to stop it early-- too over the top. Did he mention anywhere that it spurred on the home console industry? Or did he continually berate it?
Nathan - that's exactly why he was discounted as a reliable review reference over at Wikipedia by myself and others in the the video game project there. He's for entertainment purposes only, and I don't think tries to be anything but.

AVGN has said the very same thing himself. He has never tried nor ever claimed to be an honest reviewer. It IS entertainment.

And secondly, it was more like:

Defendants: Ours use different technology, look at the screen.

Judge: Ok, open up the back and lets see the technology. Ok, there's the computer board with the game logic on it which is.....hooked up directly to a tv set sitting inside.

Either way, the courts then (and largely still don't now) understand the fine technical differences of hardware and software. If Baer's patent wasn't so generally vague, Magnavox wouldn't have had a leg to stand on. As far as all this goes, part of the problem is the whole trademark/copyright/patent system is flawed.

Surprized calculator companies never sued the computer industry. Because you know, they are both just electronics on a circuit board designed with the purpose of processing numerical data. :ponder:
