Well the good news is, the monitor ( NEC 1970nx ) works great in low res, and even medium res looks pretty good as well, with the correct adjustments, it can look pretty good: instead of attaching all the pics, here is a link to the flickr folder with the pics in it... https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/sets/72157650088133410/ Cheers.

Well I picked up my NEC 1970nx multisync monitor... for an LCD screen it's surprisingly heavy... but lighter and easier to carry than a 1224 colour monitor at only 14" thanks for the hints folks... tonight when i get home i will try it out... and if it works... i will then try and install my STE IDE interface and MMC card... fingers crossed... now that I think of it, i may bask in the glow of low res graphics for a week or so first, then try the ide interface. Cheers and I will report in later.

I think you are right... my dell did not work with my atari rgb to vga cable... R(1) to R(7), G(2) to G(6), B(3) to B(10), Gnd (5,6,7,8,9,10) to Gnd(13), Hsync(13) to Hsync(9), Vsync(14) to Vsync(12).... oh well, hopefully when I pick up that NEC 1970nx monitor others have used it will work... Cheers folks and wish me luck...

Awesome, just found one of the monitors listed in the thread, online not to far away... picking it up tomorrow... and I will make the cable this week i have 2 13 pin Din males i can use... so that will allow me to make up two cables if I get lucky enough to find another one... Cheers guys, this is great... i have 6 atari ST's and only 3 monitors... (124, 125,1224) i have a vga that works with monchrome already ( I wonder if it will work with low res? ) the high res looks like the picture above with the vertical banding, but when i hit auto adjust, it looks great... i wonder if that means the low res will work? i will have to make a cable and see... thanks again

I ordered one today as well for my 4096STE (1040ste with 4megs) (thanks for the link) if I can get a keyboard working for my Mega ST 2, i will order one for that as well... but I first have to get a keyboard working or build an Eiffel interface... say, what are you guys going to use as storage for it? sd or mmc ? also if you get a handle on 44pin ide cables let me know

i had a bit of issues loading dos initially... i think i had the default set too high, then I read through the documentation about the LCD mode, so I changed that to 0, and set the speed to 19200, and there were no issues... at this point I am not sure if the issues I did have where because of the lcd setting on 1 and a highspeed sio mode... I do have to play around a bit more with it... But I had to clean up an Atari 520STFM (with 1 meg of ram) it was filthy and smelled of smoke... so I got the wipes out, and cleaned the hell out of it... now I want to perhaps update the tos (version 1.02 according to sysinfo... (but thats a storey for the ST forum)... I will set up the atari 130xe again on my other table, once i have it tidied up ... Thanks again do let us know ( the forum ) if there are any updates to the software, but as it stands, its a feature rich, awesome and very cool as is... cheers

I completed my SIO2MicroSD interface and it's awesome I cannot tell you how happy it made me to build this interface successfully the first time thanks to all the help in the forum and of course the creator of the project these are links to pictures with it up and running in game mode. Notice that I have a switch and a power adapter connected. The switch is used in game mode, it allows me to power the unit up via the adapter, and disconnects the Atari 5+ volts. This allows me to configure the device in game mode with an atr file loaded while the atari is off. .... ( this does not work too well when powered by the atari, as it take too long to pick a file and load it... one has to hold down reset while one selects the file...) while not in game mode, i simply power the unit via the atari, disconnect the power adapter, load up my disk images, save the config... then shut the atari off, then back on, with reset held down, until the D1: xxxxxxx.atr is displayed, then I release reset and it loads fine... ( I have to come up with a delay because the avr take a little bit of time to get setup ) Technically i could always use the power adapter as it would simplify things, but I do like the thought of having the unit powered up by the computer reducing the number of power cables... thanks again The switch is simply used to disconnect power from the atari to the SIO2MicroSD interface.... I'm sure it's not good to have the two 5 volt supplies running into one another Cheers.

Hey congrats as well!! @diskwiz, what is your opinion on powering this device from the Atari vs an external 5volt supply... Cheers!

read my post above it tells you which pin on the sio goes to which pin on the arduino. if you don't know which colour wire goes to which pin on the sio connector... you may have to rig up something so you can test. my multimeter has a continuity tester so you know what pin goes to which coloured wire... My sio cable did not seem to have a standard wire color representing pins.... so a meter is the best way .

here are some pics of the progress... I decided to put a 9 pin male connector as the SIO input, mostly due to convenience. a totally non standard config with the first 5 pins being used: Pin1 +5 volts for power depending on responses as to weather or not this is a good idea? Pin2 Gnd Pin3 Din Pin4 Dout Pin5 Command that sort of thing... http://www.flickr.co...N00/9189551666/ < a bunch of pics of this project and a couple of others... http://farm3.staticf...1242682de_b.jpg http://farm8.staticf...cea989ef5_b.jpg

SIO pin 4 and 6 are gnd SIO pin 7 is SIO Command Pin 8 digital Input SIO pin 5 is SIO Data Out this would go to Pin 0 RX SIO pin 3 is SIO Data In this would go to Pin 1 TX SIO pin 10 is SIO +5 volts <- Question for all, does it make sense to use this pin to power the circuit instead of an external power supply? is there any disadvantage to doing it this way? I know you won't be able to setup your disks before turning on your atari, but other than that, is there any downfall? pictures to come soon of my progress... (no laughing...)

Well I verified some stuff... I have the good DMA chip. (C398739-001A) That's good news. I checked my Floppy Controller while I was in there, and it's the Western Digital 1772 Chip. ( Which I think is also good news? if I want to upgrade my floppy?) At any rate I was able to fix the problem with my hard drive by renaming the Auto folder that was there, and copying the auto folder from my hard disk utility disk... now everything appears to be fine And Yes JENS i was able to bypass the hard drive boot by pressing space to to disable the memory test, and then press and hold Alternate. Thanks... I guess I wasn't doing it correctly . this is good cause there was some stuff on the hard drive I wanted to keep but a may still delete a bunch of crap thanks again folks

Thanks I will give it a shot. i will report back... I have a feeling that my 1040ste has a bum dma chip... and that may be part of the reason... just odd that it would suddenly stop being able to run programs, when the 520stfm can with no problems... i wonder if i may have dissabled a ste-fix of some sort while messing around? is there such a thing? a software plugin etc, that would fix the dma issue in software? thanks again, I will report back

How do I bypass hard drive boot up and boot from floppy? If I boot from floppy I should be able to delete the desktop.inf file... Holding down alternate on the 520stfm works, but one the 1040ste it does not seem to work because of the memory test it performs... I may just reformat the whole thing I just bought the drive and it's full of crap for the most part...
-
Some additional information: the problem just started to appear with my 1040ste (upgraded to 4megs) it used to work fine on it, but suddenly stopped working, now I get the error message illegal file type when trying to run programs or even view documents.... If I unplug the set, and plug everything into an atari 520 stfm everything appears to work fine... no issues... then i switched back to my 1040ste, and tried to boot from my hd driver floopy disk, and when I was able to boot from the floppy (which is hit and miss with holding down alt, mostly does not work but did a couple of times... the set i have has the ram test when you turn it on. if I can get it to boot from the floppy, then i can read and run programs from my ste on the drive... if i boot from the drive itself on the set, .prg files will not run.... it's so weird....

HI there I just aquired a Megafile60 today, and there are 4 partitions on it. it was all working fine and dandy, then I started to look around and change settings etc on it, and i was messing around with some files, and now when ever I try and run a .prg file, I get Illegal file type. also when I try and delete the desktop.inf file I get two bombs... rebooting does not appear to help.... Help? has anyone run across this before? do i need to reformat the whole thing? are there any trouble shooting tips anyone can offer? please let me know thank you

Howdy, this is such a cool project... I successfully built the SIO2Arduino last night (and tweeted about it...), very cool Now I would like to build the SIO2MicroSD I have a couple of questions: the hex file on your website, is it the latest version? Also because it's a hex file, which application would you suggest i use to burn it to my 328 chip via ISP. (I have an Atmel AVRISP Mark II programmer in the windows environment). I'm used to using the arduino enviroment, but wondering if there is a handy little .hex burner you can recommend Congrats on this project it's great Cheers

Just received mine, wow, in less than three days...(pays to be local) at any rate, very nice construction, Just going through the disk of goodies that came with it... cheers then I will give it a shot. Cheers, and thanks for a great product... I hope I can get it working with my raspberry pi ...

SIO2PI -> Raspberry Pi as a floppy
Waltermixxx replied to TheMontezuma's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
any chance we can get a guide on how to do this ( the software side of things) The hardware I can figure out ? it would be great if we could i just purchased an atari 800 and would love to get it up and running with some disk images, I have a couple of raspberry pi's and this sounds like the perfect application for them. I don't have much linux experience, so re-compiling for me usually requires a few detailed steps Any help would be awesome thank you
