  1. So TG is now charging to submit scores, I thought it must be like a dollar or something small to help the website going. 2.50 at most. Those guys want 10 bucks a score... really? My pitfall cart costs me 25 cents and you want 4000% of the price of the game. This pretty much ruins the credibility of the site in general, as it's just another scam business. If the scores were mostly correct, and overall the entire thing was for fun or bragging rights to friends, then a few cheated scores don't bother me too much (they DO bother me some, but I seriously doubt someone is cheating my Altered Beast score, but I guess you never know). i guess I'm just a realist and would expect some amount of cheating to go on with something as big as TG. However the 10 dollar fee per score is a huge barrier for me as a player. I'm not rich or poor, but I don't just throw away 10 bucks even if I could. I could buy games with that money, and unless I'm a world record player I would never consider it. I'm not going for 24 hour Star Wars runs or the Donkey Kong world record; I just wanna submit some scores and compete against players on games I love like Berzerk, Pitfall, Missile Command, etc. So what's the point of a #5 or #6 score when you know there is probably some poor bastard who couldn't afford to submit a score. Imagine Todd Rogers or someone with tons of records submitting 10 dollars a score for his stuff.... yea like someone would ever drop 10k on video game scores verified by a sketchy website ever again. The documentaries (King of Kong, Chasing Ghosts) make a big point about how they are doing it for the love and to keep classic gaming alive. Well, now I guess they are doing for the cash. Screw Twin Galaxies. I'd rather just post screenshots or youtube videos of my scores. Most gamers and my friends would know the scores are legit, and that's good enough for me. I had a lot of fun in 2009-10 submitting some scores, but I guess those days are over. It really sucks because all the scores from the 80s are on TG. There were some other threads listing some other high score sites, and I might have to check those out. It also hurts players that have already submitted scores. For example, I submitted a Missile Command MAME score a few years ago and now my mediocre score is gonna stand for all time even though I can beat the crap out of it now. What a joke. 30 years of keeping classic gaming alive means jack shit if you ruin it for the future and sell the website to some corp. The whole site sucks, I hope they go bankrupt.
  2. I downloaded the latest build and it helped a little, but the blinking was still off. Switched it to OpenGL mode and everything seems to be fine. Thanks for the help.
  3. The Pitfall swinging sound is the best!
  4. Pitfall!, Berzerk, and Adventure, I'll never get tired of these games!
  5. I recently got into trying to beat Activision Checkers, and I can play it fine on the Activision Anthology for GBA/PS2. However, in Stella the cursor doesn't show up when its not over a checker, making playing the game less fun. Anyone know of a fix/setting/voodoo spell that could help me out? tried using both the [!] and [o1] versions and nothing worked. This is one of the first glitches I've ever come across in Stella, personally. What I *think* might be happening is that the cursor was meant to flash on a TV and somehow that flash just isn't showing up on my LCD monitor. My first thought was that it was a VSYNC or framerate issue, but after messing with settings it doesn't seem to be. Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.
  6. I gotta say, after reading Todd Rogers's FB post and thinking about it a little... it's entirely possible all the scores were typos. He had 1000s of scores if I recall correctly. Here me out for a second using an analogy: typesetting manuscripts. Most typesetters will only achieve about 85% accuracy with typesetting something manually. What does this mean? Just that it's hard for people to accurately copy data from one source to another. It's also harder to notice the discrepancies. Ever write a paper/email/whatever and proofread it 50 times only to have someone point out a typo in the first line? It happens. The human brain just can't see this stuff sometimes. Its leik the old iertent tihng in wichh lttres are mvoved arnoud and you can slitl raed it. Brain are funny, and fingers are fat. This is a deadly combination. Now imagine when Twin Galaxies goes online: from paper to ascii-- that's thousands of characters that had to be transcribed 100% correctly. The refs were probably working late into the night, if not early into the morning. You see where I'm going with this. Rogers had more scores than anyone, I'd almost be more surprised if there were no typos in his scores. ....All that said. I don't know all the details about this case, but I do think it's possible that all the mistakes have some explanation. Remember only like .1% of his scores seem to be in question, that's WELL, WELL below any estimate for typographical (or other types of) errors. Plus the games to lie about just seem weird.... Barnstorming? Skiing? Why not Missile Command? Why not Asteroids? Why not Centipede? Why even cheat when he had plenty of records? I don't really see the motive. The activation prototype explanation makes perfect sense. Anyone who has ever made a game and balance things out know that you tweak the variables a billion times. He claims to have gotten the score at an expo, so it seems feasible. Why would he ever have known? Activision might not have even know, a single programmer could have tweaked a single thing and told nobody. So, finally, I'm not going to blame Rogers, and I'm not going to even blame TG. Instead of claiming there scores were all 100% they should have been upfront. The kafkaesque NDAs are weird too. Almost everyone associated with TG seemed weird and sketchy as hell from the movies. They all seemed angry... not really sure what's going on with them. ***One more thing, TG does standardize mame scores using Wolfmame which supposedly has anti-cheat stuff built into it. I've personally submitted some scores for a few games and it was really fun to be able to sort of get into the competitive action over the internet. Most of the MAME scores are also from the digital age, so you don't have the "coffee stains" or double transcription problems of the old scores. There is none of the shady '80s nonsense, and I'd be willing to bet the MAME scores are more legit that the stuff from back in the day. Not saying MAME = original hardware, just that MAME = MAME. Everyone has access to the same controller settings and you can use keyboard, mouse, controller, or w/e. You can't slow it down, you can't savestate, etc etc. If you don't have a controller, well too bad for you I guess. Every gamer should have a USB controller. Not every gamer should have to drive to New England or Florida to find a ref and have a high score.
  7. We are still goin strong. Any more atari age ppl wanna come play? We could use older players, but anyone is welcome. I've been upgrading the server a lot recently, and we have tons of new things from these old posts. I'm planning a total write-up and guide for the server which should help out old players and new ones, talking about all the custom bosses, dungeons, and shops we have. Our goal is basically to make the best fantasy/scifi Minecraft mmo-style server. It's been an adventure so far dealing with the ups and downs of server maintenance, but really its been a blast so far. If you want to come play you can log in at 75.65.252.229:9000. It's free to play and we can host up to 20 people at a time. We run McMMO at 20x exp, Jobs, and about every plugin we can to make it a fully-functional rpg world. Recently we added Large Biomes as well, Superflat, as well as a pvp+griefing world called "WAR." The other worlds, however, don't allow griefing and only friendly pvp (duels) are allowed. Stealing outside of war is against the rules, but other that than you'll have free reign to level up and gain perks. Eventually you will even earn the /fly command, when you become a full PALADIN. We don't accept money or any sort of pay-to-win perks or anything like that. Everyone can earn the ability to fly, as well as control the weather and time of day. Some snapshot dungeon profiles: Killbot Factory ----------------------- /warp factory -Fight Killbots and Engineers -Destroy the infernal machine, EXODUS -use the EMP to destroy the swarms of summoned robots! Ice Palace ----------------- /warp ice -Fight the epic Necromancers in their Ice Palace -Also fight merchants, who can summon pre-packaged auto-assembling Killbots, and deadly Hork Zombies The Morgue ----------------------- /warp ice -walk past the Ice Palace to find the dark and deadly Morgue -combat deadly undead: Death Knights, Nazgul, Horks, Zombie Kings, and the total badass boss, BigPiggy. 8. I'm a huge Ultima fan, but maybe not in the same way as most others; although I really liked QotA, Ultima 1 and 2 are probably my favorites for being truly open-ended and not focused on virtue. I also feel like party mechanics were a bad move for the series and that it's more fun just to focus on a single character as it streamlines the experience. Combat goes faster and can take place without artificial "battle screens." I've played 1-4 to completion (3 was the NES version, 1,2,4 on DOS) and I'm workin on 5. The other day i decided to give 7 a try, but something about it feels awkward, clunky, and slow compared to the constant adventure and fun combat of the others. walking with the mouse is painfully slow, and using the arrow keys feels unresponsive when switching directions. The items menus are a mess, and paper dolls are horrible. Combat is awkward and the AI is awful. Walking through doors is completely nonresponsive and sometimes I have to try and walk through the door 2-3 times before it will open. The biggest problem, I think, is how choppy and unresponsive walking around is. The game feels SLOW! Anyone else feel this way? Should I just power through it despite these problems? Is there some redeeming nature to combat? Is the choppiness just caused by running Exult on Windows 8? As it stands I'm about to shelve this title and start decoding my Ultima 5 notebook...
  9. "Pen" method or the "use a Sega Genesis Controller" method.
  10. Anyone that isn't saying ATURE hasn't played ATURE. http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/165701-ature-my-homebrew-action-adventure-game-for-atari-2600/
  11. I've got some 10-foot extensions on my NES controllers... they work great. You shouldn't have a problem with 10 feet, and theoretically you could go much longer. EDIT: That scorpion doormat is sick. Do you jump it everytime?
  12. NP! Both of you guys are absolutely welcome. ALSO: I'm running a SPECIAL OFFER THIS WEEKEND, log in and mention this offer to get $1000 in server money! Hell yea!
  13. Turbo Grafx-16, NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, Playstation, Playstation 2, Dreamcast, Gamecube, Flashback 2, Wii DSLite, GBASP, GBA Micro, GB (original), GBPocket, Kindle Fire (don't knock it I play tons of games on it) Computers: Windows 98 machine for a real dos environment, XP Machine with a floppy drive for workin with DOS stuff as well, Windows 7 and 8 gamin comps. A netbook I use for Intellivision, Stella, and Turbo Grafx-16 games.
  14. I came into this topic thinking a Roguelike would be impossible. You guys have obviously proved that theory wrong. Anyway, one of the most annoying things about Roguelikes is the amount of button pushes most of them take (although my favorite, DC:SS fixes this with auto explore) to traverse the screen. 80 keystrokes to move across the screen? Tedious and painful even. My suggestion is that the little dude moves around more like the SQUARE from Adventure, or if he's still moving on a grid that you can simply hold the direction you want to move in, like 8-Bit Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy. And as cool as the other prototype looks I think something like this is more of a roguelike: The idea being that the lack of graphics is actually a benefit because it allows for a bigger space to move around in and it allows one's imagination complete control over how everything looks. I've actually got a pretty balanced, bare-bones roguelike combat system (feel free to use, anyone): Here's how I envision it: --You have 2 forms of attack, Melee and Item. With melee you run into a mob to fight. With items, you push the button then a direction. --Equipment: Melee Weapon, Wand (for boosting the magic spell, the ranged attack), Armor. No bows and arrows or any missile weapons except the wands. --Other items: Potions, Food, Gold. Scrolls are redundant and everything would be a potion. Weapons, the number is also, conveniently, how many points of damage a weapon does: 1. Bokken (Wooden Sword) 2. Dagger 3. Mace 4. Longsword 5. Bastard sword 6. Claymore Armor (the number is how many points of damage it subtracts from incoming damage) 1. Cloth 2. Leather 3. Chain 4. Splint 5. Plate 6. Crystal Plate Wands (basic missile weapons. The number signifies both the damage it would do and the MP cost. There is a certain elegance to that, I think) 1. Fire 2. Lightning 3. Pain 4. Laser 5. Destruction 6. Death Wands (utility, each costs 5 mp) -Polymorph -Teleport -Sleep Potions -Acid (actually acts like a wand of digging, creates a hole down to the next level) -healing -Stat healing (IE ants attack your STR stat and this potion fixes that) Monsters: 26 or so Monsters. A monster can be stored as a single number, and that stat would be used for damage done, it's hitpoints, and when divided by 5, it's defense. examples: A - Angel (26), 26 HP, 26 DMG, 5 def B - bear (2), 2hp, 2dmg, 0 def Z - zombie (1) 1 hp 1 dmg 0 def G- Giant (15) 15 hp, 15 dmg, 3 defense the numbers can be arbitrary so that maybe (A)ngel is the most powerful, (D)ragon is the second, and so on however the designer sees fit. I could work out a list of cool monsters at a later time, but the series should be a complete 1-26 set. Some mobs should have special powers. Thoughts?
  15. "I'm not sure if it qualifies as "open-world" but it does have one Dungeon with 256 levels with each floor being comprised of 256x256 rooms." Sounds pretty damn openworld to me EDIT: Thanks for the DUCK attack and Doom links Cookie Master! Time to hit up Stella and play all these great games. I'm just recently finding out about Halo 2600, Ature, and others so I've got some work to do.
  16. This topic is made of win and needs to be revived. Anyone have the Halloween Adventure Trilogy roms? Looks super cool. Also couldn't find Duck Attack if anyone has more info on that one as well. I've been playin the games in this topic all afternoon, I'm looking forward to Wolfenstein VCS: The Next Mission, but no time right now. Man, I wanna make a Doom 2600 game...
  17. Wow, this game is amazing! I like to take a stab at label making, but it'll be a few days. Since the topic is 2 years old I don't think that'll be a problem .
  18. This is awesome! Definitely the best Adventure sequel I've played on the 2600 (and Ive played at least . Excellent work! You are awesome. EDIT: at least eight 8 + ) =
  19. Okay, back to the .net one, I'm looking at the "details" of why it can't run and I get this: "Deployment and application do not have matching security zones." That's the only error as far as I can tell... seriously Microsoft? Anyways, probably still a long shot but I thought I'd post the error in case anyone has dealt with it before. EDIT: YEEEAAAAAAAA got it to work. The error is beyond stupid.......You have to...wait for it.....use Internet Explorer. Had no idea .net was that stupid.
  20. Thanks again! Always nice to have some more DOS games. Have to turn the doxbox cpu down to 132 khz for it to run xD
  21. In the '90s there was a casino by my Grandmother's house and so when the family went to visit her and my mom would go play slot machines for a few hours, but my dad and me would go to casino arcade. They'd give you 2 tokens for every quarter, plus a bonus for cashing in larger bills. The machines were usually 2 tokens to start and 1 to continue. Man, those were the days.
  22. That's epic! Any idea where to download the version you posted?
  23. Looks like I'm SOL. Enabled the 3.5 framework and still getting the same "This application cannot run" error message. Such a bummer, I wish the creator had just made it a simple application. Guess I'll give the XP machine a shot at it.
  24. Thanks for the response: I had tried dosbox and it did not have a compatibility mode option. I assumed (probably incorrectly) that .NET 3.5 was included in Windows 8, is that not the case?
  25. http://meatfighter.com/pitfall/ I found this ASCII port of Pitfall, and though I'm sure it's probably be posted on AA I can't not post it. It's a very smooth console-based port of Pitfall, it's a little easier, and it's got parallax scrolling to boot. What more could you want? Well I could want it to run in Windows 8, but I can't seem to get it to work. It ran just fine on the XP machine in my office, but won't work for Windows 7 or 8. I do have an XP machine in the other bedroom of my apt, but that computer isn't hooked up to the internet, doesn't have speakers, etc etc. Running this in Windows 8 would be a dream. Anyway, enjoy the port and if anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it.
