I just encountered the most irritating example of dimensional weight pricing. The maximum volume that a parcel can be before it is subject to dimensional weight pricing is 1728 cubic inches (12"x12"x12"). I was trying to send something in a box measuring 19"x13"x7". Its volume in cubic inches is 1729. One single cubic inch over the limit. Here is a graph showing the rate changes for First Class Commercial Parcels. The new rates are $2.60 from 1 to 8 oz., then it jumps to $3.30 at 9 oz., and then it's an additional 5¢ for every ounce up to $3.65 at 15.999 oz. I don't have an old price file for First Class Retail Parcels, so I can't make a comparison graph, but here is the new price list for that service. Yup. Priority International rates have gone up ~10% on average.

eBay's shipping price calculator is not correctly accounting for the dimensional weights of certain package sizes to certain destinations. I called tech support and reported the problem, but who knows if it will ever get fixed. Yup. One inch can make all the difference. A feather in a 12"x12"x13" box will cost more to ship than 10 lbs. of potatoes in a 12"x12"x12" box. As another example of dimensional weight craziness, I just shipped a 4 lb. item in a 22"x15"x6" box to California. But because California is a zone 4 destination relative to me, the package was not subject to dimensional weight pricing, so it only cost me $8.75 to ship it using Commercial Rate Priority. If that package had been going to the east coast (zone 8 relative to me), dimensional weight would have been applied to the package and it would have cost $37.49 to ship.

For those of you who didn't know, major rate hikes went into effect on Jan. 17th. Here's a rundown of the changes. Priority Mail Sees about a 9% increase across the board for both retail and commercial rates. Also, for some time now, Priority mail shipments to zone 5-8 destinations that are greater than 1 cubic foot in volume (12"x12"x12") have been subject to dimensional weight pricing. I know this is confusing to a lot of people, myself included, so let me try to explain. For any parcel with a volume greater than a cubic foot (1728 cubic inches), the dimensional weight rate may apply instead of the parcel's actual weight. Dimensional weight is calculated as follows. (Length x Width x Height) ÷ 194 = Dimensional weight (round up). Parcels over 1 cubic foot in volume will be charged either this dimensional weight or their actual weight, whichever is greater. As an example, a 12"x12"x14" parcel has a dimensional weight of 11 lbs. (12x12x14 = 2016 ÷ 194 = 10.39 = 11 lbs.) This means that even if the parcel's actual weight is less than 11 lbs., the parcel will still be charged the 11 lb. rate because of its volume. At 12 lbs. of actual weight or greater, the parcel would be priced according to its actual weight. Dimensional weight pricing can significantly increase your shipping costs. A 3 lb. item in a 12"x12"x12" box would cost $14.47 to ship to a zone 8 destination. That same 3 lb. item shipped in the 12"x12"x14" box used in the example would cost $37.49 to ship to that same destination. Standard Post (Previously retail-rate Parcel Post) Standard Post has been renamed yet again. Now called Retail Ground, with rates jumping 10%. Parcel Select Nonpresort (Previously commercial-rate Parcel Post) Renamed yet again to Parcel Select Ground, but only sees about a 2% rate increase. Available through Paypal shipping. First Class Commercial First Class Parcel rates increase ~13%. However, First Class Commercial Parcels can now weigh up to 16 oz. (15.999). Retail First Class is still limited to 13 oz. and I don't know what kind of rate hikes it has seen. I haven't paid retail prices in a long time. First Class Package International Service Sees a whopping 21% increase on average, though there are some discounts in the 1.5 to 2 lb. weight range. I figured it would be harder for those outside the US to learn of these changes, so I made some graphs comparing the old and new prices for both Western Europe and Canada. --Note the sweet-spots in the 24 to 32 oz. range-- ______________________ Also, it appears as if USPS is no longer giving a discount when purchasing postage through their Click-N-Ship service. USPS's retail and online rates appear to be identical. Postage printed through Paypal still appears to be priced at commercial rates, thankfully.
