For the same reasons it matters that Atari was dominant 1979-85, Nintendo 86-95, Sony 96-03. The most popular systems have the largest libraries, because they draw the most developers to their systems. And that equals better gaming options for us and more variety and more choices. On the other end of the spectrum, the bottom console typically has fewer games worth playing (N64), and might even disappear (Dreamcast, Atari Jaguar). And that hurts us: Less games, less variety, more boredom.
So yeah, the popularity (or NON-popularity) of a system does matter to the common person.
Just because something is popular, does not mean it is good. I will agree that many people follow trends simply so they can be like everyone else, look like everyone else, act like everyone else, because they are to scared to actually have a personality of their own, but honestly what does it prove that Tommy Hilfinger can sell a butt load of clothes? Does that make his brand of jeans better than say Levi's, or Wrangler? If it makes someone feel good to quote a bunch of sales figures to "prove" look how good I am, great do it. I personally don't give a rat's furry butt, and it does not impress me, or make me think, "Geez I might be missing something here."

I think I just posted this so I could use the word hoopla...

Hoopla!!
I'm jealous. I can't find any GC games cheap. Not SSX, not Eternal Darkness, not anything. They're either sold out at the bargain price (sorry no more available) or on sale somewhere else for $50 smackers.
Well I got mine used for $18 minus the discount, plus a guide for $4 minus the discount and the EB games I got it at has them new for $20 so I was pretty excited! I'm still looking for Blood Rayne for $20 or $25 but can't find it.
Sorry for hijacking this topic

(oh man I've been waiting to use that one!!)

I wonder how much it would cost to have one of those made?
-
Does anyone know if Adventure has ever been on an anthology for any of the "newer" systems?
thanks

Don't quite get what the deal is with this game, but I did get a copy of Eternal Darkness for under $20 today. Woo Hoo!
I dunno, Zelda looks like a cartoon. I have never played any of the Zelda games so that could be the reason for my not getting why there is such a big hoopla about it...I think I just posted this so I could use the word hoopla...

Well if greatness is determined by sales than that means PC's are better than MAC's because they sell more.
Unless you have stock in the company or work for them and get bonus's based on sales, what difference does it make. Everyone posts these sales statistics like they prove something, IMO they don't. Just because a company can slam the airwaves and media with ad's and brainwash the public into thinking they need to have something, and the public buying into it, just proves the public are suckers.

Frankly, I don't think the sequel problem is any worse than it's been in years past, and there are a number of unique titles out there. Disaster Report, the Getaway, Cubivore, the Mark of Kri, GunValkyrie, .hack, Crimson Sea, Car Battler Joe, and Skygunner spring to mind. And the future holds stuff like Viewtiful Joe, Disgaea, Color Quest, Alter Echo, Kingdom Under Fire, and Glass Rose. Original games are always there if you're willing to look for them.
Yea I know, but the one's that are receiving all the promoting are the sequel games, most of the ones you mention aren't getting much ad time. So the industry keeps pumping out all those games that have been done before in the hopes of making a S***load of money.
I mean, lord, Mario has been around almost as long as me, don't you think it's time to throw him a retirement party, buy him a gold watch and bring in some fresh faces? There were what 1,000,000 Mario games on the N64? You'd go into Wal-Mart and the case would have fifty boxes with that little Italian guys face on it. It looks like the same thing is starting to happen across the board.

So I am reading through the new Electronic Gaming magazine, checking on what titles will be coming out this year, and it pretty much looks like a release list from.. well any year out of the past 5, 6, whatever...
ok PS2 will have 2 new FF one online (possibly Japan only) one not, GT4, Resident Evil:Network, Silent Hill 3, Tomb Raider 6,000,001, Driver 3 (but that'll be on all 3 systems)
XBox Halo 2 (eagerly awaited!
) Perfect Dark Zero, Project Gotham Racing 2, another Star Wars game (sigh), Driver 3GC Zelda (also eagerly awaited) F-Zero, FF:Crystal Chronicles, Mario, Mario, Pikmin2, Pokemon, Starfox, Driver 3
And I know each will have even more sequels that weren't listed
I understand the logic, if you've got a winner capitalize on it as much as you can, even though the outcome may not be great (DMC2 anyone?) but I'm getting very bored...
I just hope Fable and that P.N. 03 will be as great as they are saying
Does the gaming industry need some fresh game designers?

I am sorry, I don't understand what the big deal about sales is? Just because the PS2 has higher game sales doesn't mean the games are great, and just because the sales for GC games are low doesn't mean those games are not great.
It seems like you guys are trying to prove something, and I just don't think you have to. The PS2 has higher game sales (IMO):
1. Because it has been out longer than the other 2 systems and thus more people have them, which equals a lot of games sold, and
2. umm well I don't have a 2

Damn, I hope I win this auction. I better go get my sniper service working. Inky, you better watch out, this one is ALL MINE!!!!!

Isn't there still a GBA version coming out soon? Like, next month or something?I played a decent amount of JGR for the Dreamcast, but I don't think I ever beat it. The game just got ridiculously hard near the end. One complaint I always had about this game was that you couldn't really control your tricks. I'm a Tony Hawk fan, so I think it would have been really cool if you actually had to try to pull off tricks (Maybe this changed in JGR Future, I don't know)
--Zero
The difficulty of JGR is one of the reasons I like it better than JSRF. I've beat JSRF about 6 times already, but JGR only once. And you didn't have to really try to pull off tricks in JSRF, but that's not the type of game this is. Tony Hawk is all about tricks JSRF and JGR aren't. That's why I liked these games so much, they are just different from everything out there...

Unfortunately my job and class tonight has kept me from putting an end to this "war" before it got started. Everyone (mostly) knows that I do not like the PS2 because I have had really bad gaming experiences, but the point of this was NOT to debate the whole I suck, you suck, we suck, rather to discuss this fanzine's bias. I wonder how big a kickback the fanzine is getting from Sony. It's a pretty popular periodical, and I can't stand the bad reviews they constanly give the Xbox nad GC games. And to refute their claim of non bias.
I have been reading GameInformer for well over a year, and have constantly been exposed to their bias for the PS2. They even answered a letter from a reader that asked them why they were so biased against the Xbox and GC, and said they weren't biased against either system, but you only have to read the magazine to see that just isn't true. another prime example of their bias came through when the discussed the online gaming potential of the systems, and how the Xbox's would do poorly because it was broadband only.
I wanted to point out how impossible it was for that magazine to admit that the Xbox version of SC was better graphically then the PS2. I know many people feel that graphics aren't the end all be all of gaming experience. Why else would we so enjoy the classic systems, but the point is... I was sitting there reading the review and looking at comparison pictures of the same scene from each game and the PS2 was clearly lacking, AND YET GameInformer says it's not bad just different.

Jet Grind Radio done for good!? Sega how could you?

Nothing left to live for...

yes the biggest PS2 fanzine ALMOST admits that the XBox can do something better then their overtauted, precious PS2.
Issue 119 March 2003 pg. 70
Splinter Cell Here Comes the GunMost, if not all of you, know about Splinter Cell at this point. If you don't, you're reading the wrong magazine. The question on everyone's mind isn't whether or not Splinter Cell will be a good game on the PS2, but rather, will it look as good? The Xbox version has unbelievable visuals, and it's expected that the older and slower PS2 be able to keep up....it comes close, but that sharpness the Xbox version enjoys is noticeably missing. Muddy textures and blurry environments mask the PS2's weaker graphical capabilities, but the result is obvious to someone who has seen both. That's not to say that the PS2's version looks bad - it's still freaking incredible graphically- (umm if you are blind as a bat-Foxy)it's just different than the 'box.
So close and yet so far away. Until the end I thought they were actually going to admit that at least SC (if they will admit to no other) looks better on the Xbox than the PS2. Nope, it's just "different". Yea if "different" means better.
And once again they failed to mention the crappy control of PS2.
HA!

The user has been officially NARUed from eBay! That, in my opinion, is WORSE than death!
Still looks active to me.. Also, he won one of our auctions this weekend and promptly paid for it via PayPal! I didn't know dead people could play Atari 5200 games.

..Al
He must be one of George Romero's creations.

WHAT I MEANT TO SAY:
Just to be different:
The Intellivision ha ha.
No actually some of my best gaming memories are from playing that system with my best friend. We would play Burgertime, Microsurgeon, Shark Shark, Bowling, and BlackJack for HOURS and laugh like hyenas while doing it! Good times, good times!
Least favorite- hmm? None.
Every system I'v played has had at least something I've enjoyed playing. Although since the PS3 will be out I guess the PS2 will soon be considered a classic, then I will have a least favorite.

i can't believe it got bid on!

my 2 cents...It is pretty amazing how every thread about the current systems and now their evolutions can degenerate into a war over which one sucks the most. It's enthralling really..

Right before the Philly Classic.
That's great! It will be out in time for my son's B-Day. I held off getting him the GBA because I'd just gotten him the GBC right before it came out. I did think about trading up for the GBA, but now I am glad I waited.
How much is it going to be?

That's what $20 or so? I'd love to play it again, but we don't have the 2600 out of the attic
